Social pain, violence, and inequalities
Get PDFThis issue of RELACES brings together a series of writings that, from different approaches, problematize social pain, suffering, and violence. Within the framework of life and death organization regimes, the writings grouped here warn the ways in which the regulation, distribution, and consumption of bodies become nodal in capitalism. Being more than instruments of mediation of emotions, bodies are the ways of experiencing, belonging, and being in the world. All social behavior is assumed and made possible from and through corporeal materiality, so there is no possible social action without a body. These thus occupy a central place as the locus of conflict and order. Well, the human condition is eminently corporeal. Get PDFThe purpose of the study is to address the experiences raised in the particular setting of mortuary care. The work is of a qualitative type, in which, from a phenomenological method, interviews are applied to funeral employees, whose analysis made it possible to form four metacategories: experiential action of the profession, experience of existing and dying, meaning in the experienced and function of posthumous experiences. The analysis of the experiences of the protagonists and the meaning of the care after death, gives an explanation of what life means, since the bond between employee and the deceased arouses feelings and reactions in the relationship with the other, the identification with him and how empathy transcends the limits of life and takes place in the face of death.El propósito del estudio es abordar las vivencias suscitadas en el escenario particular de la atención mortuoria. El trabajo es de tipo cualitativo, en el cual, a partir de un método fenomenológico, se aplican entrevistas a empleados funerarios, cuyo análisis posibilitó conformar cuatro metacategorías: acción vivencial del gremio, vivencia del existir y el morir, sentido en lo vivido y función de las vivencias póstumas. El análisis de las vivencias de los protagonistas y el sentido de las atenciones posteriores a la muerte, rinde cuenta de lo que significa la vida, pues el vínculo entre empleado y difunto suscita sentimientos y reacciones en la relación con el otro, la identificación con este y cómo la empatía trasciende los límites de la vida y tiene lugar ante la muerte
Cuerpos comprados y cuerpos seducidos con azúcar: un análisis sobre los intercambios sexuales entre Sugar Babies y Sugar Daddies/Mommies en México
Get PDFThe following article discusses the results from our psychosocial study of the experiences of sexual exchanges between male and female Sugar Babies and Sugar Daddies/Mommies in Mexico. Throughout the analysis of eight free association narrative interviews, we show how female Sugar Babies have different understandings of their bodies compared to male Sugar Babies. Female Sugar Babies experience having a ‘body for sale’ before starting a relationship with a Sugar Daddy, whereas male Sugar Babies experience gifts and money as seductions, not exchanges, because they do not experience their own body as something that is for sale. Only later do male Sugar Babies accept that their bodies have been bought. In other words, whereas women start from the assumption of being sexual objects that can be bought and sold, men start from the assumption of being persons that cannot be bought and sold, but have their self-perceptions transformed through the sexual encounter with their Sugar Dadies/Mommies.En este artículo se discuten los resultados de nuestro estudio cualitativo sobre las experiencias y vivencias del cuerpo en los intercambios sexuales por dinero, tiempo y acompañamiento, entre Sugar Babies y Sugar Daddies/Mommies. A partir de la codificación, análisis y triangulación de ocho entrevistas narrativas de asociación libre (free association narrative interviews), en este artículo se discute cómo las mujeres Sugar Baby experimentan tener un “cuerpo a la venta” previo a entablar una relación con un Sugar Daddy, mientras que los hombres Sugar Baby reciben regalos y dinero como parte de juegos de seducción, y no como una compra de su cuerpo. Es hasta posterior a los encuentros sexuales de los hombres Sugar Baby que viven su cuerpo como si éste estuviera a la venta. En otras palabras, mientras las mujeres comienzan las relaciones de azúcar asumiendo ser objetos sexuales que pueden ser comprados, los hombres comienzan asumiéndose como personas que no pueden ser compradas, sin embargo, sus autopercepciones son transformadas a partir de los encuentros sexuales con sus Sugar Daddies y Mommies

Get PDFIn a dialogue with critical studies on domination and resistance, this work underscores the agency of dancing mothers to articulate maternal experiences with artistic training. Based on the data collected in an ethnographic fieldwork carried out between 2014 and 2020 with a group of dancers who are also mothers and participate on the professional dance circuits of tango and contemporary dance in Buenos Aires, the article emphasizes how professional dancers who are also mothers bring to bear insights and knowhow that permeate rigidly established boundaries between the different spheres of everyday life. Although the erasure of motherhood reveals one of the core ways that gender inequalities are replicated on the dance circuits surveyed, it is possible to see how the experience of motherhood becomes an empowering resource for action and artistic creation.En diálogo con los estudios que proponen una mirada complejizadora sobre la dominación y la resistencia, este trabajo pone particular énfasis en la agencia de las bailarinas madres para articular las experiencias maternas con la formación artística. A partir de los datos recolectados en un trabajo de campo etnográfico realizado entre 2014 y 2020 con un grupo de bailarinas madres que participan de los circuitos profesionales del tango y la danza contemporánea en Buenos Aires, el artículo presta especial atención a los saberes que desbordan las fronteras rígidamente establecidas, que circulan entre la danza y la maternidad y que muestran las porosidades existentes entre las diferentes esferas de la vida cotidiana. Aunque la invisibilización de la maternidad da cuenta de un criterio central de reproducción de desigualdades entre varones y mujeres en los circuitos dancísticos estudiados, se concluye que la experiencia materna también puede ser un recurso habilitante para la acción y la creación artística
Volverse depresivo/as. Relatos biográficos de etiquetamiento de depresión en usuarias/os de servicios de salud mental en Santa Fe, Argentina
Get PDFThis article analyzes biographical accounts of people from the middle sectors who acknowledge having depression and participate, as users, in mental health services in the city of Santa Fe, Argentina. It presents the results of an empirical investigation that research from a sociological perspective how and through which resources they come to be considered depressive or depressed. First, the article analyzes the process by which they acquire the depression label to reference their biographies. It describes the transition from a period of identity confusion, in which they cannot explain their emotions, to the recognition and acquisition of that term to account for their moods and identities. Second, it examines four ways of recognizing depression: from a biographical crisis, receiving a psychiatric diagnosis, participating in therapies and cultural resources such as books and the internet. Self-labeling, through the perception of emotional deviation is more relevant in the stories than external labeling, based on expert judgment. It concludes in the centrality that self-labeling involves in these emotional problems in contexts of biographical hyperreflexivity.Este artículo analiza relatos biográficos de personas de sectores medios que reconocen padecer depresión y participan, en calidad de usuarios, en servicios de salud mental en la ciudad de Santa Fe, Argentina. Presenta resultados de una investigación empírica que indaga desde un enfoque sociológico cómo y a través de que recursos llegan a considerarse depresivas/os o con depresión. Primero, analiza el proceso por el que adquieren el rotulo de depresión para referenciar sus biografías. Describe el tránsito desde un periodo de confusión identitaria, en el que no pueden explicar sus emociones, hasta el reconocimiento y la adquisición de ese término para dar cuenta sus estados anímicos e identidades. Segundo, examina cuatro modos de reconocimiento de la depresión, a saber: a partir de una crisis biográfica, recibir un diagnóstico psiquiátrico, participar en terapias y recursos culturales como libros e internet. En los relatos asume mayor relevancia el autoetiquetamiento mediante la percepción de desviación emocional que el etiquetamiento basado en el juicio de expertos. Concluye en la centralidad que comporta en estos problemas emocionales el autoetiquetamiento en escenarios de hiperreflexividad biográfica
Prácticas transformistas en el noroeste argentino: la producción audiovisual de Bartolina Xixa
Get PDFThe aim of this article is to analyze Bartolina Xixa’s artistic work by studying two of her audiovisual productions: Ramita seca. La colonialidad permanente (Dry Twig. Permanent Coloniality) from 2019 and CARTA para cualquier cuerpo blanco que se atreva a leerla (LETTER for Any White Body That Dares to Read It) from 2019 as well. This article is located as part of the preparation of a mapping of the current drag scenes. It seeks to explore the particularities introduced by Xixa’s micropoetics, who lives in the northwest of Argentina, in relation with the dominant drag scene that can be represented by the Drag Queen Argentina National Election, held since 2000 in San Miguel de Tucumán. For this, Xixa's practices will be approached from a comparative perspective. Likewise, it will be evaluated what historical links can be proposed between Xixa’s productions and other artistic manifestations, considering their territoriality and their practices as radicant. It will be found that the disruptive potential of Xixa's performances, especially when studying them in comparison with the prevailing drag scene, must be thought of as heir to other previous artistic manifestations in order to restore it as part of a dissident sex-gender genealogy.La intención del presente trabajo es analizar la labor artística de Bartolina Xixa a partir de dos producciones audiovisuales suyas: Ramita seca. La colonialidad permanente (2019) y CARTA para cualquier cuerpo blanco que se atreva a leerla (2019). Este artículo se ubica como parte de la confección de una cartografía de las escenas transformistas actuales y busca explorar las particularidades que introduce la micropoética de Xixa, quien reside al noroeste de Argentina, frente a la escena dominante del transformismo que puede ser representada por la Elección Nacional Drag Queen Argentina que se realiza desde el 2000 en San Miguel de Tucumán. Para esto, se abordarán las prácticas de Xixa desde una perspectiva comparativa. Asimismo, se evaluará qué vínculos históricos pueden proponerse entre sus producciones y otras manifestaciones artísticas pensándolas desde la territorialidad. Se encontrará que la potencialidad disruptiva de las prácticas de Xixa, sobre todo al pensarlas en comparación con la escena transformista reinante, puede ser considerada heredera de otras manifestaciones artísticas anteriores para restituirla como parte de una genealogía sexo-género disidente

Los estadounidenses aceptan sin crítica alguna, ciertas ideas base aun cuando estas sean discriminatorias o invasivas para ciertos colectivos minoritarios. Todo ello es ciertamente desastroso para la democracia legitimando a largo plazo las políticas iniciadas por Donald Trump y su administración. Por medio de la manipulación política del temor, Trump supo imponer una retórica discriminatoria basada en la peligrosidad de los inmigrantes ilegales como así también en la necesidad de construir un muro en la frontera con México con el fin superior de proteger a los estadounidenses. Por medio de noticias falsas, y una propaganda espuria, sus políticas recibieron el apoyo del partido Republicano recordando que el resentimiento se nutre de fuerzas profundas como el temor y la desinformación. Any society runs on fundamental assumptions about rights, liberty, justice, and routine social processes that are implicitly and explicitly communicated. While these have often been problematic for minority group members, they are now less certain for many Americans and citizens in numerous democratic countries since Donald Trump refused to accept losing the 2020 presidential election and then incited an insurrection against the Congress of the United States on January 6, 2021, just weeks before his term ended. This shift is mainly due to policy changes, such as abolishing the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Fairness Doctrine in 1987 that facilitated right-wing news organizations like Fox News (Honig, 2019), along with the rise of digital media that altered the communications ecology and promoted disinformation for profit (Benkler; Faris and Roberts, 2018; Benkler et al, 2017; Bennett and Livingston, 2018). These changes were the foundation for President Trump’s weaponizing of fear, especially his rhetoric about murderous illegal immigrants and the pursuit of a multi-billion border wall to keep Americans safe and keep his supporters fearful. Violencia y sufrimiento social: elementos para una desnaturalización de la violencia desde testimonios cautivos en las cárceles del Chile postdictatorial
Get PDFThis article proposes some elements for a reflection on violence and social suffering, as an exercise in denaturing, based on the findings of a qualitative research on the criminal issue in Chile. It follows that the criminal policies of mass incarceration of Chile's post-dictatorship, with all its violent practices of human degradation, are a determining element when it comes to thinking about the reproduction of violence and continuity in the circuit of confinement. The denaturalization of violence is therefore presented as a necessary exercise when thinking about a paradigm shift in the face of this vortex.Este artículo propone algunos elementos para una reflexión en torno a la violencia y el sufrimiento social, en tanto ejercicio de desnaturalización, basado en hallazgos de una investigación cualitativa sobre la cuestión penal en Chile. De ella se desprende que las políticas criminales de encarcelación masiva de la postdictadura, con todas sus prácticas violentistas de degradación humana, son un elemento determinante a la hora de pensar la reproducción de la violencia y la continuidad en el circuito del encierro. La desnaturalización de las violencias se presenta, por tanto, como un ejercicio necesario a la hora de pensar un cambio de paradigma frente a esta vorágine
