Lu pour vous : The Man from the Future. The Visionary Ideas of John von Neumann
Le chapitre intitulé « Johnny » de l’autobiographie inachevée de Klári von Neumann (née Klára Dán), la seconde épouse de Johnny von Neumann, débute ainsi : « I would like to tell about the man, the strange contradictory and controversial person; childish and good-humoured, sophisticated and savage, brilliantly clever yet with a very limited, almost primitive lack of ability to handle his emotions – an enigma of nature that will have to remain unresolved.
An introduction to functional analysis
This book covers the material of a standard functional analysis course offered at the end of an undergraduate course or at the beginning of a postgraduate course in mathematics. Key results that are a prerequisite for more in-depth study of specialised or applied branches of mathematical analysis such as harmonic analysis, differential equations or the calculus of variations are presented in an accessible but comprehensive way.
A first noteworthy fact is that no prior knowledge of measure theory or Lebesgue integration is assumed or required. Indeed, Lebesgue spaces are introduced as completions of the space of continuous functions with respect to an appropriate norm, while the usual construction of the Lebesgue integral is described in an appendix. Secondly, Hilbert spaces are not treated as a special case of Banach spaces, whose particular characteristics are mentioned in passing. Instead, the theory of Hilbert spaces is developed on its own before pushing the abstraction a notch higher by then turning to Banach spaces.
Written in the style of lecture notes (i.e., in a simple and concise style, with chapters composed of short sections, and with no attempt to enrich the exposition with comments on the history of the development of the ideas mentioned), this book represents a turnkey solution for anyone who has to teach a two-semester course in functional analysis. That said, it is also suitable, with some judicious pruning, for a one-semester course on Banach spaces.
The first two parts of the book, which cover around one hundred pages, serve to lay the foundations on which the notions of functional analysis which form the heart of this book are then built. Initially, since one of the main aims of this book is to establish infinite-dimensional analogues of familiar results for linear operators between finite-dimensional vector spaces, the author begins by briefly discussing some basic elements of abstract linear algebra. Starting with a reminder of what a vector space is, he goes on to show, using Zorn's lemma, that every vector space has a basis. He then digresses slightly to recall some important notions from the theory of metric spaces, such as the definitions of convergence, continuity, compactness and separability. Finally, the theory of normed vector spaces is explored in more detail, with a number of detailed examples. In this section, the book proceeds at a slower pace, delving into a number of highly important ideas such as those at the heart of Banach's fixed point theorem, Riesz's lemma, Weierstrass's approximation theorem, the Stone-Weierstrass theorem and the Arzelà-Ascoli theorem.
Part III develops the theory of Hilbert spaces in about a hundred pages. The author deals in turn with inner products, the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, induced norms, orthonormal bases, orthogonal projections, the Riesz-Fréchet representation theorem and rudiments of spectral theory. The culminating point of Part III is the Hilbert-Schmidt (or eigenfunction expansion) theorem, which describes how a compact self-adjoint operator defined on a Hilbert space decomposes in terms of its eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. This major theorem is then applied, in the final chapter of Part III, to Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems.
The fourth and final part, also about a hundred pages long, presents the foundations of the theory of Banach spaces. It covers foundational results such as the Hahn-Banach theorem, the Kreĭn-Milman theorem, Baire's category theorem and its classical applications, Mazur's theorem, Helly's theorem that any bounded sequence in the dual of a separable Banach space has a weakly-* convergent subsequence, and the result that the closed unit ball in a reflexive Banach space is weakly sequentially compact. Three brief appendices totalling around thirty pages present the proofs of a handful of results, such as the Banach-Alaoglu theorem, which are useful but outside the scope of the main part of the book.
There are more than 200 exercises of varying degrees of difficulty in the 27 chapters that make up the book. In addition, complete solutions are presented at the very end of the book. Most of these exercises are fairly standard. A few, of a more uncommon nature, have been borrowed from other sources, in which case due credits are given
Virtual reality at workplace for autistic employees: Preliminary results of physiological-based well-being experience
Emotional health problems in the workplace often hinder the integration and retention of autistic employees (AE), a challenge identified in many sectors. Recent literature highlights the consequences of these problems, such as burnout leading to reduced productivity and resignation. Previous research supports the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) for training a variety of specific skills (e.g. riding a bus or plane travel), as well as more complex social skills, such as emotion recognition and functional communication. In addition, existing studies on using physiological self-monitoring in AE training offer a promising approach to promoting improved emotional health. The present paper reports on implementing a VR system that simulates workplace training and integration and enables real-time monitoring of three physiological signals, in five post-secondary autistic students. Using an Oculus Quest 2 and non-clinical grade sensors, the researchers delivered the VR intervention over three days to each participant. At the end of these interventions, the researchers measured the perceived satisfaction of these integrated systems, based on several technological criteria, on a 5-point scale. The integrated system received an overall rating of 4, suggesting its likelihood of acceptance and use. A preliminary analysis of a participant’s physiological responses to this VR intervention is also presented. This preliminary report suggests the efficacy of a VR workplace simulation and physiological self-monitoring in promoting emotional well-being and basic task training for post-secondary AE. The researchers’ observations and the proposal of a theoretical framework to enhance real-time emotional communication based on physiological markers for AE are also discussed
Developing the Digital Literacy of People with Cognitive Limitations in the Workplace
Context
In Quebec, Canada, “adapted companies” offer working environments and employment suitable for persons living with disabilities. This study was done in response to a request from an adapted company that offers its employees workplace training sessions to help them to overcome their (largely cognitive) functional limitations with the help of digital technology. According to a Quebec study, 31% of people with cognitive limitations (PCLs) lack basic digital competencies. Despite this, researchers do not often investigate the needs of this clientele related to technology.
Purpose
To increase the autonomy of PCLs in activities requiring the use of the Internet via a tablet, the objectives of our study were (1) to establish a frame of reference for designers and teachers developing online training for this specific population, and (2) to validate it by creating and refining, with feedback from PCLs, a digital training environment incorporating an educational game.
Methods
We used an inclusive design approach based on user-centered design (UCD) to put learners at the heart of the creation process. To do this, we validated the design, usability, and pedagogical readability of learning environment and game prototypes with PCLs through a series of individual interviews.
Results
Our findings led to recommendations for the design and validation of online training for PCLs, notably the addition of navigation indicators and contextual aids, simplification of screen pages both graphically and textually, simplification of game features, the predominant use of video-based content, and the use of individual interviews to obtain user feedback.
Conclusion
Inclusive design is a promising approach to adapting digital learning technologies to the needs of PCLs in the workplace
Instrumental dialogue and the ethics of expressing solicitude for each other’s existence
Dialogue is about forgoing control and possession when interacting with the Other. In comparison, the notion of instrumentality appears contrary to the very notion of dialogue. This paper suggests, however, that mutual instrumentalization is necessary for dialogue to be a space where participants express solicitude for each other and promote each other’s voice, action, and existence. Building on the work of French philosopher Étienne Souriau, we argue that promoting another’s existence requires taking their actions and speech into our own. This enables them to also exist through us, as we allow them to instrumentalize us. Such a view better accounts for what goes on in tangible dialogue situations, as we show by revisiting an empirical case. Our proposal extends current research on the conditions of productive dialogue, invites being careful about who or what populates the dialogical scene, and turns our attention to what they may need to pursue their existence
