Research Project on the Development of CEGEP ESL Students' Digital Literacy

    No full text
In a world where artificial intelligence (AI) challenges communications, the critical thinking and ethical skills of humans, as teachers, contributing to the development of the digital literacy of our students becomes essential. Alongside this challenge, teaching practices must be transformed, and this research project aims at proposing a scientifically tested answer, an option, to the teaching community. In this research project, a recently developed digital game (A Journey through the Digital World and English Culture) will be tested and its impact on the development of CEGEP ESL students' digital literacy (i.e., ethical citizenship, information literacy, critical thinking, content production, and communications vis digital technology) will be documented. This presentation will highlight the theoretical foundations, methodology, innovative developments of the project, as well as the richness of the college and university collaborations that support this ambitious project. As part of this research project, Sophie Marier works in collaboration with Maude Bonenfant, Full Professor in the Department of Social and Public Communication at UQÀM, and Patrick Plante, Professor in the Department of Education at TÉLUQ University. The research team also benefits from the valuable collaboration of five colleagues from five colleges in the greater Quebec City area: Sainte-Foy (Charles Lapointe), Garneau (Sandra Cole), Limoilou (Stéphanie Fraser), Mérici (Rachel Tunnicliffe), and Lévis (Amy Pittendreich)

Abstract In the context of rapid work transformation, competency frameworks have become key tools for articulating professional recognition, individual development, and organizational management. This article offers a critical analysis of the design approaches of these frameworks, drawing from ergonomics, sociology of work, and educational sciences. It highlights the tensions between prescription and autonomy, standardization and recognition, organizational strategy and experiential knowledge. Based on three conceptions of competence (performance, know-how, action rule), it examines design methods, forms of participation, and the intended or diverted uses of frameworks. The article advocates for a reflective, inclusive, and evolving approach, aligned with the challenges of future competencies, particularly in the face of the emergence of generative artificial intelligence

Parsing Millions of DNS Records per Second

The Domain Name System (DNS) plays a critical role in the functioning of the Internet. It provides a hierarchical name space for locating resources. Data is typically stored in plain text files, possibly spanning gigabytes. Frequent parsing of these files to refresh the data is computationally expensive: processing a zone file can take minutes. We propose a novel approach called simdzone to enhance DNS parsing throughput. We use data parallelism, specifically the Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) instructions available on commodity processors. We show that we can multiply the parsing speed compared to state-of-the-art parsers found in Knot DNS and the NLnet Labs Name Server Daemon (NSD). The resulting software library replaced the parser in NSD

Regard mathématique sur le jeu de Hex

    No full text

Breaking Through the ‘Wall of Complexity’ in a Politically Themed Microworld: A Challenge for Elected Officials and the General Public

    No full text
Political leaders are often regarded as the most qualified individuals to address modern societal challenges, owing to the knowledge they acquire through their experience in dealing with complex issues, governance and management, and working towards making impactful decisions. To understand the influence of prior knowledge on decision-making, we conducted a comparative analysis of complex decision-making performance in a politically themed computer-simulated microworld involving incumbent elected officials and a general population sample, each contrasted with a random-response baseline produced with randomly generated decisions. Participants were tasked to govern a country for re-election while maintaining financial stability. The pattern of results suggests that decision-making faces a ‘wall of complexity’ whether one is an elected official or a citizen. Although elected officials generally reported having greater political knowledge, their performance was still relatively poor. The elected officials and general population subgroups performed at the same level and only slightly better than chance. Addressing the societal challenges of our time requires elected officials to possess more than domain-specific prior knowledge

In this article, Yannick Vincent offers a detailed historical and mathematical study of the connections between two prominent 19th-century French mathematicians: Edmond Laguerre (1845-1886) and Charles Hermite (1822-1901). While both are well known for their contributions (each lending their name to a family of orthogonal polynomials) Vincent's purpose is to uncover a deeper and more nuanced intellectual relationship between the two. Through a close examination of Laguerre's work on polynomial equations, Vincent highlights both the influence Hermite had on Laguerre and the points of philosophical and methodological convergence between their respective mathematical practices

Guest editorial: Research Methods for the Performative and Communicative Study of Organizing and Organizations

This editorial introduces the QROM special issue on "Research methods for the performative and communicative study of organizing and organizations". It explores the evolving landscape of performative and communicative research methods in organizational studies. It traces the performative turn in social sciences, emphasizing how phenomena like strategy, leadership, and authority are not merely observed but enacted through communication. Diverse conceptualizations of performativity—from speech acts and critical theory to socio-materiality and affect—argue for methodological reflexivity and empirical richness. Drawing on contributions to the special issue, the editorial showcases innovative approaches such as diffractive vignettes, autoethnography, and Ricoeur’s triple mimesis, which foreground the researcher’s embodied and affective engagement. It calls for more empirical work that centers performativity and communication as core forces of organizing, while challenging traditional subject-object distinctions. Ultimately, the editorial positions performative research as a transformative, ethically engaged practice that not only studies organizations but actively participates in shaping them
