On a question of Erdős on doubly stochastic matrices
In a celebrated paper of Marcus and Ree (1959), it was shown that if A=[a_{ij}] is an n times n doubly stochastic matrix, then there is a permutation sigma such that the sum sum of the absolute squares of its elements is less or equal to the sum from i=1 to n of a_{i,\sigma(i)}. Erdös asked for which doubly stochastic matrices the inequality is saturated. Although Marcus and Ree provided some insight for the set of solutions, the question appears to have fallen into oblivion. Our goal is to provide a complete answer in the particular, yet non-trivial, case when n=3
Exact Short Products From Truncated Multipliers
We sometimes need to compute the most significant digits of the product of small integers with a multiplier requiring much storage: e.g., a large integer (e.g., 5100) or an irrational number (π). We only need to access the most significant digits of the multiplier-as long as the integers are sufficiently small. We provide an efficient algorithm to compute the range of integers given a truncated multiplier and a desired number of digits
Parsing Millions of URLs per Second
URLs are fundamental elements of web applications. By applying vector algorithms, we built a fast standard-compliant C++ implementation. Our parser uses three times fewer instructions than competing parsers following the WHATWG standard (e.g., Servo's rust-url) and up to eight times fewer instructions than the popular curl parser. The Node.js environment adopted our C++ library. In our tests on realistic data, a recent Node.js version (20.0) with our parser is four to five times faster than the last version with the legacy URL parser
Wiki as an open educational resource in asynchronous courses: benefits and challenges
Since 2013, TÉLUQ University (Quebec, Canada) has been using MediaWiki software for the Wiki-TEDia project to build an open educational resource (OER) aligning the asynchronous nature of wiki writing with self-paced student learning and the institutional model of continuous enrollment. Wiki-TEDia applies contribution-oriented pedagogy and OER-enabled pedagogy in self-paced educational technology courses. The primary goal of Wiki-TEDia is to create a comprehensive repository of scientific knowledge on teaching methods and strategies, engaging students in the collaborative creation of OERs beneficial to their professional community. The repository has grown continuously, achieving its goal of creating a detailed inventory of teaching methods. By 2023, after 10 years, Wiki-TEDia contained 135 teaching models, methods, and strategies, each described on a separate web page. Despite variations in form and scientific quality, the number of visits and positive feedback confirm the repository's success and social relevance. A quantitative evaluation conducted in July 2021 revealed that the repository had accumulated 5.5 million unique visits. Student participation has exceeded expectations. They expressed satisfaction and pride in contributing to the wiki and appreciated the repository as a valuable resource for their professional practice, even after leaving the university. The Wiki-TEDia project successfully embodies the core attributes of open pedagogy in distance learning, including participatory technologies, openness and transparency, innovation and creativity, sharing ideas and resources, a connected community, learner-generated content, reflective practice, and peer review

Unravelling the complex interplay between statistical learning and working memory in Chinese children with and without dyslexia across different ages
The relation between statistical learning and working memory in children with developmental dyslexia (DD) remains unclear. This study employed a distributional and a conditional statistical learning experiment and a working memory task to examine this relation in 651 Chinese 6- to 12- year- olds with and without DD (NDD = 199, 101 females; NwoDD = 452, 227 females; participated 2014–2019). Results showed working memory positively associated with recognizing high-predictable and familiar items in both groups, but negatively associated with recognizing unfamiliar items in the DD group only. These findings uncovered the complex interplay between statistical learning and working memory, demonstrating how different working memory abilities in children with and without DD relate to various statistical learning mechanisms at the item level
