Migratory grief: a systematic review
Introduction: Migration is often accompanied by interpersonal, material and abstract losses and can be associated with migratory grief. The correlates of migratory grief have not yet been sufficiently addressed in research. This review aims to systematically investigate the relationship between migratory grief and psychopathology, to map the current state of research on this highly relevant topic and to derive relevant implications for the target group.
Method: A systematic literature search of electronic databases (PubMed/Medline, PsycINFO, Web of Science) was conducted up until January 2023. Primary empirical quantitative and qualitative studies with migrants were included that assessed the association between migratory grief and psychopathology, using a specific instrument for migratory grief (quantitative) or named migratory grief as relevant topic (qualitative). Studies that only captured aspects of migratory grief, were not written in English, or were descriptive/non-peer-reviewed publications, were excluded. A quality assessment of all studies included was performed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. The results were synthesized using a narrative synthesis approach.
Results: All studies (quan. = 4; qual. = 1) were cross-sectional and used convenience samples. The studies had a mean number of 83 participants with a total of N = 487 participants included in the current review. All included studies reported a significant relationship between migratory grief and psychological distress.
Discussion: Despite the quality of the included studies being limited, our results show that there is a link between migratory grief and depression among refugees and migrants. However, there are only few studies in this currently and certainly also in the future relevant field of research, which is why further studies on factors influencing migratory grief as well as associations with other disorders would be desirable

Hierarchical conductive metal-organic framework films enabling efficient interfacial mass transfer
Heterogeneous reactions associated with porous solid films are ubiquitous and play an important role in both nature and industrial processes. However, due to the no-slip boundary condition in pressure-driven flows, the interfacial mass transfer between the porous solid surface and the environment is largely limited to slow molecular diffusion, which severely hinders the enhancement of heterogeneous reaction kinetics. Herein, we report a hierarchical-structure-accelerated interfacial dynamic strategy to improve interfacial gas transfer on hierarchical conductive metal-organic framework (c-MOF) films. Hierarchical c-MOF films are synthesized via the in-situ transformation of insulating MOF film precursors using π-conjugated ligands and comprise both a nanoporous shell and hollow inner voids. The introduction of hollow structures in the c-MOF films enables an increase of gas permeability, thus enhancing the motion velocity of gas molecules toward the c-MOF film surface, which is more than 8.0-fold higher than that of bulk-type film. The c-MOF film-based chemiresistive sensor exhibits a faster response towards ammonia than other reported chemiresistive ammonia sensors at room temperature and a response speed 10 times faster than that of the bulk-type film
Young mixed planted forests store more carbon than monocultures - a meta-analysis
Although decades of research suggest that higher species richness improves ecosystem functioning and stability, planted forests are predominantly monocultures. To determine whether diversification of plantations would enhance aboveground carbon storage, we systematically reviewed over 11,360 publications, and acquired data from a global network of tree diversity experiments. We compiled a maximum dataset of 79 monoculture to mixed comparisons from 21 sites with all variables needed for a meta-analysis. We assessed aboveground carbon stocks in mixed-species planted forests vs. (a) the average of monocultures, (b) the best monoculture, and (c) commercial species monocultures, and examined potential mechanisms driving differences in carbon stocks between mixtures and monocultures. On average, we found that aboveground carbon stocks in mixed planted forests were 70% higher than the average monoculture, 77% higher than commercial monocultures, and 25% higher than the best performing monocultures, although the latter was not statistically significant. Overyielding was highest in four-species mixtures (richness range 2–6 species), but otherwise none of the potential mechanisms we examined (nitrogen-fixer present vs. absent; native vs. non-native/mixed origin; tree diversity experiment vs. forestry plantation) consistently explained variation in the diversity effects. Our results, predominantly from young stands, thus suggest that diversification could be a very promising solution for increasing the carbon sequestration of planted forests and represent a call to action for more data to increase confidence in these results and elucidate methods to overcome any operational challenges and costs associated with diversification
Vigilance has mainly a social function in a wild group of spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi)
Vigilance is a widespread behavior that allows individuals to socially acquire information and/or effectively detect potential risks posed by predators and conspecifics. In this study, we aimed to investigate how social factors (i.e., subgroup size, number of males and immatures in the subgroup, presence of fission and fusion events, subgroup activity), individual characteristics (i.e., sex, presence of dependent offspring) and possible vulnerability to predation (i.e., being in smaller subgroups or lower in the canopy) explain variation in vigilance behavior in a wild group of spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi). We collected vigilance data during focal samples of all adults, subadults and juveniles of the group (N = 38), and ran generalized linear mixed models with a Bayesian approach. We found that the proportion of time both sexes spent in vigilance increased with subgroup size and during fusion events. Individuals also spent more time in vigilance when the subgroup was resting or socializing compared to other activities. Moreover, the proportion of time spent in vigilance increased in subgroups with more immatures. An alternative model with similar fit suggested that the proportion of time spent in vigilance increased in females when subgroups included more adult and subadult males. Overall, these results suggest that our study group mainly directed vigilance toward conspecifics (i.e., social vigilance), probably as a result of the relatively low predation pressure experienced, and contribute to the understanding of the multiple social factors affecting vigilance in group-living primates
