The Flouting of Gricean Maxims Found in the TV Series Mom
This research discusses the flouting of Gricean maxims done by all the characters in the TV series Mom in the first 10 episodes in season 1. This research aims to identify and to classify the flouting of Gricean maxims according to Cutting’s classification and the most used method of flouting. The quantitative and qualitative methods are used as data analysis instruments. It is discovered that there are 99 flouting, with 59.6% (59 cases) among which is flouting of maxim of quality, 18.2% (18 cases) is flouting of maxim of quantity, 13.1% (13 cases) is flouting of maxim of relation, and 9.1% (9 cases) is flouting of maxim of manner. The characters in Mom tend to flout the maxims by using metaphors, being irrelevant, using irony or sarcasm, using hyperbole, or being ambiguous or obscure. The analysis shows that the characters flouted the maxims for several reasons, with the most frequent one is to offend or to hurt the hearer and to convince the hearer
Linguistic Stylistic Analysis of Instagram Poems by Rupi Kaur, Dhiman, and R.M Drake
In the era of digitalization, poems are also published on the internet. Instagram is one of many platforms to introduce self-written poems to a broader range of readers around the world. An Instagram poem has its own writing style and aesthetics since it is written in the modern era. In this research, stylistic analysis is used to analyze the style used in Instagram poems. Rupi Kaur, Dhiman, and R. M. Drake are three Instagram poets whose poems are chosen for analysis. The poems are chosen based on the number of likes. Five most liked poems of each poet written in 2018 are the main data source used in this research. The purpose of the research is to identify the linguistic features found in poems written by Rupi Kaur, Dhiman, and R.M Drake. Out of many linguistic features, only graphology, phonology, syntax, and lexical features are analyzed in this research. The result shows that Instagram poems are mostly written in lower case letters in the same font. They also form free rhymed poems by using enjambment to break the sentences into several lines. The Instagram poets also chose their words carefully to create a specific meaning in the lines while creating a balanced emotion of word connotation
Impoliteness Strategies in Trevor Noah’s Afraid of The Dark Stand-up Comedy Show
This research focuses on identifying the impoliteness strategies and explaining the purposes of the most frequently used strategy in Afraid of the Dark stand-up comedy show performed by Trevor Noah. The data of this research are Trevor Noah’s utterances which contains impoliteness strategies. The analysis was based on the impoliteness strategies theory proposed by Jonathan Culpeper (1996). The result of this research shows that Trevor Noah uses 105 instances of impoliteness strategies which cover all five types of strategies proposed by Culpeper; bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness, and withhold politeness. Based on the findings, negative impoliteness is found to be the most frequently used strategy. It occurs 42 times or with a percentage of 40% of the whole data. This high frequency of negative impoliteness strategy is used to entertain the audience. Trevor Noah mostly used ‘condescend, scorn, or ridicule’ sub-strategies of negative impoliteness intended to amuse and entertain the audience and also to induce laughter when hearing one being ridiculed or disparaged
Unreleased Bursts of Final Stops in English Words as Pronounced by Native Speakers of Javanese from Yogyakarta
This research aims to describe how native speakers of Javanese from Yogyakarta realize final stops in English words, understand how often they pronounce final stops in English words with audible release burst, and examine whether release burst in final stops is a feature of Yogyakartan Javanese accent of English, based on their occurrence frequency. 20 native Javanese speakers from Yogyakarta were asked to pronounce 24 English words ending in stops: /p/, /t/, /k/, /b/, /d/, and /g/. The recordings were then analyzed and compared against recordings of the words produced by native English speakers using Praat to identify the release bursts. The finding shows that release burst can be found in 7 out of 80 (8.75%) recordings of words ending in final /p/, 8 out of 80 (10%) recordings of words ending in final /t/, 15 out of 80 (18.75%) recordings of words ending in final /k/, 10 out of 80 (12.5%) recordings of words ending in final /b/, 9 out of 80 (11.25%) recordings of words ending in final /d/, and 16 out of 80 (20%) recordings of words ending in final /g/. In total, 165 out of 480 (13.54%) recordings contain release bursts in the final stop
The Violation of Conversational Maxims in the Movie Series Divergent
This research focuses on identifying the types of conversational maxims violated by the characters in a feature film trilogy entitled The Divergent Series. This research also aims to explain the functions of the violation of conversational maxims in the series. The result shows that there are 100 violations of conversational maxim in Divergent series, and among those, there are 43 violations of maxim of relevance (43%), which is the most frequently occurred in the movie. The second violation identified is the violation of maxim of manner, which reaches 24 violations (24%), and the third frequently occurring violation is violations of maxim of quantity with 22 numbers of violation (22%)/. The least occurring violation found in the movie is violation of maxim of quality, which reaches 11 numbers of violation (11%). There are several functions of the violation of conversational maxim found in the movie: keeping a secret, concealing half of the information, avoiding certain topic/question, and confusing the hearer
Rethinking John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas as Children’s Literature
This graduating paper aims to examine whether or not John Boyne’s novel entitled The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas should be categorized as children’s literature. The story tells about a nine-year-old German boy named Bruno with his Jewish friend, Shmuel, who lives inside the concentration camp during the Holocaust. This graduating paper applies the genre approach since it is the most suitable approach to analyze the elements of children’s literature genre, which are character and characterization, didactic elements, the happy ending, and element of pictures in children’s literature. In order to support the analysis, library research was conducted alongside the novel itself as well as supporting articles from reliable websites. The result of the analysis shows that John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas cannot be categorized as children’s literature as the characteristics of children’s literature suggested by Nodelman are not found in the novel. However, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas can be categorized as high literature since the characteristics of high literature are primarily found in the novel
"Octonauts": Blending in the Names of BBC UK Children’s Programs
This research investigates the formation process of the blends, the classification, and identify the semantic changes in the names of the BBC UK children’s programs. The methods used in this research are descriptive qualitative, and quantitative. To analyze the formation and classification of the blends, the writer used the theory proposed by Elisa Mattiello. The result shows that morphotactically, the blends are categorized into total and partial blends. Morphonologically, the blends are classified into overlapping and non-overlapping blends. Morphosemantically, the attributive blends are more frequently used than the coordinative blends. Furthermore, there are some semantic changes found in the attributive blends.
Hannah Peace’s Suicide in Toni Morrison’s Sula: A Psychoanalytic Approach
This research discusses Hannah Peace’s suicide by exploring her past life, from her childhood until she decides to commit suicide. This research aims to find core issues faced by her and what triggers her to commit suicide. Psychoanalysis theories and theory of suicide proposed by Shneidman are applied in this research. The results show that her suicide is caused by psychological pain which stems from many painful experiences in her past life. After exploring her distressing experiences, it can be said that Hannah faces two core issues, which are fear of abandonment and fear of intimacy. However, her suicide is not merely caused by psychological pain. There are two factors which lead to her suicide: intrapsychic and interpersonal factors. Intrapsychic factor refers to the internal psychological processes of an individual, while interpersonal factor refers to the relationship between an individual and other people
Sarcastic Expressions in The Simpsons Movie
This research identifies the sarcastic utterances found in The Simpsons Movie. It allocates the utterances said by the characters into four categories proposed by Camp (2011): propositional, lexical, like-prefixed, and illocutionary sarcasm. After that, the categorized utterances are identified based on their illocutionary functions by using Leech’s theory (1983): collaborative, convivial, competitive, and conflictive function. The result shows that there are 20 sarcastic utterances found in the movie, 85% of which belongs to illocutionary sarcasm, and the 15% belongs to propositional sarcasm. However, the lexical sarcasm and like-prefixed sarcasm are not used by the characters in expressing sarcasm. Meanwhile, there are only three types of functions that are found in this research; collaborative, conflictive, and convivial. This research also displays evidence that sarcasm is used to protect the speaker from the unwanted consequences that might come from the hearer’s reaction. In addition to context and common ground, the hearer’s response is also necessary to detect an utterance as sarcastic expression
The Heroine’s Journey towards Wholeness as seen in Margaret Atwood’s Surfacing
This study discusses the psychological journey of the female heroine in Margaret Atwood's Surfacing. This paper applies the psychological approach since it is believed to be the most suitable approach to analyze the process of the heroine’s journey towards wholeness. It examines the process of individuation in the main plot of the novel and the characteristics of the process on the heroine’s personal quest. The portrayal of the individuation process is identified through the theory of individuation proposed by Charles Gustav Jung which discusses the process of the individual’s development towards psychological completeness. In order to support the analysis, library research was conducted using the novel as well as the supporting articles from any reliable websites. The result shows that the heroine’s journey can be translated as Jungian’s theory of individuation as there are six characteristics of the process of individuation found within the story. Furthermore, five stages occurred in the heroine’s journey, namely the recognition of the persona, the assimilation with the shadow, the confrontation with the animus, and lastly the appearance of the Self that leads the heroine towards psychological wholeness
