    The Flouting of Conversational Implicature in the Headlines and Taglines

    This research attempts to describe the kinds of flouting of Grice‟s Cooperative Principle maxims and explain the type of maxim mostly and least flouted in the headlines and taglines which are found in two magazines, Travel+Leisure and Wine Enthusiast. It is also aimed to see whether the headlines and taglines are able to describe the products or services. This study is presented within the framework of pragmatics. The result shows from 60 data found, 14 of the headlines and taglines in the Travel+Leisureand 16 in Wine Enthusiast magazine are mostly identified flouting the combination of maxims; maxim of Quantity and Quality. In addition, the maxim of Quality and the maxim of Manner are least flouted by the headlines and taglines in both magazines. The result also shows that the headlines and taglines are unable to fully describe the products or services unless the body copy is also provided

    Racial Issues and their Influences on the Characters in Shakespeare’s Othello

    This study aims to describe the racial issues found in Othello and to analyze the influence of the issues on the characters in the play. In finding racial issues, the present writer analyses dialogues between the characters in the drama implicitly and explicitly.The author uses Abrams‘ objective approach and also some references to classify the racial issues and along with the characters based on the types of racism such as individual racism, passive racism, active racism, and internalized racism. The data were obtained by observing the play without being influenced by materials outside of the text.The result of this study indicates that there are racial issues in this play. The racial issues have a very significant effect on the characters‘ view, including Othello‘s, of the existence of black people. Othello becomes racist against himself and loses the confidence of being black, hence the cause of the fall of Othello.

    The Non-Observance of Gricean Maxims in the Movie Series "Sherlock Holmes"

    This research attempts to investigate the non-observance of Gricean maxims in the movie series Sherlock Holmes. In particular, it attempts to identify and classify the flouting of the maxims found in the movie. The data used in this research are dialogues containing expressions of the non-observance of Gricean maxims. Based on the data analysis, 75 cases of the flouting of Gricean maxims were found: 20 (26.6 %) cases showed the flouting of the quality maxim, 8 (10.6%) the flouting of the quantity maxim, 17 (22.6%) the flouting of the relevance maxim, 20 (26.6 %) the flouting of the manner maxim, and 10 (13.3%) the flouting of a combination of maxims. It was found in this research that the flouting of the quality maxim and the flouting of the manner maxim are considered as most commonly used strategies in the movie

    The objectives of this research are to discover Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s perception, feelings, and thoughts of love and to observe her early married life with her husband as depicted in her Sonnets from the Portuguese. The expressive theory is used to find the perception, feeling, and thought of the author depicted in it. The primary data or the main object of the research is the literary work itself.The results of this research show that the perceptions of love are the products ofElizabeth’s expressive act in conceiving the love itself with deep understanding which involves the realization of position and respect of her lover and herself. However, her ideas of love are defeated by her emotion of love. Moreover, she is encouraged by the power of love to make consideration in her life to choose her own course of life that she surrenders her life to her lover by agreeing to marry Robert Browning which shows her greatest expressive act of love. Thus, love has given her the opportunity to gain happiness in her life time

    Semantic Study: Analysis of References for Animal as Object in Animal Related Articles from Internet

    Analyzing the reference for particular object is appropriate in the study of text. This paper discusses the reference for animal in internet articles. The data sources are twenty articles with animal topics. They are taken from news.nationalgeographic.com and animal.discovery.com. The method is library research to collect qualitative findings. The analysis is on the use of reference and the factors that influence the use of reference. The findings show that the dominant reference she (n: 119; 40.8%) is influenced by the gender and singularity. In addition, the frequency of references he (n: 70; 23.9%), it (n: 41; 14.1%) and they (n: 62; 21.2%) are influenced by gender, singularity, plurality, association and writer’s attitude. However association and writer’s attitude factor is not conclusive for this study

    This research aims: 1) to find out the differences and similarities between Indonesian and English noun phrases, 2) to explain the effects of the differences and similarities between Indonesian and English noun phrases on the translation products. By using contrastive analysis Indonesian and English constructions of noun phrases are contrasted to get the differences and similarities by which the data are analyzed. The results show that Indonesian and English constructions of noun phrases have similarities and differences which create problems in translation. Those noun phrases which have differences create more problems in translation than those having similarities

    The novel by Rick Riordan entitled The Lightning Thief is written based on Greek Mythology. This mythology is The Greek’s manifestation of culture that ages thousands years. To reveal the representation of Greek Mythology in The Lightning Thief as a cultural manifestation, study and analysis is conducted through dynamic structuralism approach focusing on plot, characters and settings (factual structure) of the novel. The plot is originated from three Greek heroes’ stories. The characters involve four significant mythological characters out of twenty seven mythological characters in the novel including four demigods, five gods, one Titan and seventeen mythological creatures.     INDONESIAN STUDENTS' ERROR IN THE USE OF DETERMINERS

    This research attempts to investigate Indonesian students' errors in the use of determiners in their English writing. More specifically, it is an attempt to identify Gadjah Mada University English Department students' errors in the use of English determiners and classify them according to the types of determiners and the structural change of determiners. The results of the research shows that most of the incorrect use of the determiners was in the form of articles with 71 cases (72.44%), followed by possessives 12 (12.24%), demonstratives 10 (10.20%), and quantifiers 5 cases (5.10%). The results seem to suggest that the students had the greatest difficulty in the use of articles in writing in English. However, they did not seem to have difficulty in the use of demonstratives, possessives, and quantifiers. The incorrect use of determiners \caused some structural alteration of the determiners. There are five types of stuructural alteration of determiners: addition, omission, misorder, misformation, and misuse. Most of them were omission with 29 (29.59%). All of them were in the form of articles, followed by misformation with 28 cases (28.57%), addition with 19 cases (19.38%), misuse with 14 cases (14.28%), and misordering with 8 cases (8.16%). The results suggest that most of the students tend to omit the articles in their writing
