CIRCUMSTANTIAL ELEMENTS ANALYSIS OF LYDIA MACHOVA’S SPEECH IN THE SECRETS OF LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE TED TALKS: A SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS STUDY
Systematic Functional Linguistic (SFL) views language as a sign system that can be analysed based on language structure and language use. The research is about circumstantial elements of Lydia Machova’s speech at The Secret of Learning a New Language TED Talks. This study aims to find out the types of circumstantial elements and the most dominants circumstantial in Lydia Machova’s utterances. This research used the theory proposed by Halliday & Mattiessen (2004). This research used descriptive quantitative research. The source of data was taken from utterances of Lydia Machova which provides the circumstantial elements. The research result shown all types of circumstances occurred in Lydia Machova utterances. The highest usages of circumstance are location due to the function of location give the information about the absolute place where the experience, methods and tips occurred and also give the details of time when the moment actually happened for how long and how often
ENGLISH TEACHERS’ ABILITY IN IDENTIFYING AND PRODUCING ACADEMIC TEXTS: A GENRE-BASED CASE STUDY IN SRAGEN
This research was conducted to examine the ability of English teachers of senior high schools in Sragen Regency in identifying and producing texts with various types of genres that are needed to be developed into teaching materials. Members of High School English Teachers Association in the regency were involved in the research. An instrument in the form of test was distributed to all the members of the association measuring their capability in identifying various of texts, in producing them, as well as in using them in composing a journal article. The responses given by the teachers show that they actually do not have good knowledge and language skills in identifying as well as producing texts in certain types. Furthermore, they also got problems in positioning what type of text to which part of a journal article. This condition indicates that the teachers still need upgrading program for their language skills to compose a journal article, and in addition they need others to give a hand during the process of article writing
CODE SWITCHING IN LONDON LOVE STORY FILM
Code switching is one of the topics that go into sociolinguistics study. This term refers to the phenomenon of language switching, either spoken or written, done by bilingual or multilingual people. In its development, code switching often appears in many literary works, one of them is in London Love Story film. London Love Story is an Indonesian movie released in 2016 by Screenplay Films house production. This movie contains code switching of two languages, Indonesian language and English. This research focused on analyzing the types of code switching which appears in this film which performed by the characters. The result in this research shows there are three types of code switching performed in London Love Story film, namely inter-sentential code switching, tag switching, and intra-sentential code switching refers to types of code switching proposed by Poplack (1980). Eleven utterances categorized into inter-sentential code switching, five utterances categorized into tag switching, and eight utterances categorized into intra-sentential code switching types. This phenomenon is influence by the reasons and social factors of code switching
MENGISYARATKAN SENTIMEN: SELAMAT DATANG, KPK JOKOWI! (SEBUAH PENDEKATAN APPRAISAL PADA TEKS BERITA)
This research examined the journalist sentiment in presenting news on the inauguration of KPK Supervisory Board. Through the Appraisal system, attitude, engagement and graduation were revealed to signify the journalist stance. A descriptive qualitative research was conducted by identifying social phenomenon which were then descriptively presented and analyzed. The data were taken from the online news portal of Tempo. The data were the news text entitled Selamat datang KPK Jokowi which highlighted the inauguration of KPK Supervisory Board. The result showed that the media represented by the journalist took a negative sentiment toward the issue proved by the dominance of negative judgment and appreciation along with the dominance of intensifiers and attitudinal lexis to support the motifs. Through those linguistic exploitation, the journalist led public perspective and opinion that the capacity, integrity and neutrality of Jokowi, DPR and KPK were questioned
BAGAIMANA MENGENALKAN DIALEK KEPADA PEMBELAJAR BAHASA INGGRIS
The article discusses how variations of English are introduced to teenage Indonesian English learners through coursebooks for students of high schools. English language units representing such vatiants were collected from five coursebooks for high schools. The collected units were then analysed to see what English variations they are representing, such as British, American, or mixed variaiton, or Indonesian Engish. The results show that the English variations due to its users are represented either in grammar and lexical choices. The latter dominate the numbers of data in showing the variations. The language units representing the variations are presented mostly in dialogs in the forms of utteracances. In addition choice of single words also contribute the representation of the variations. Formality becomes the main feature to differentiate between British and Amerian dialects presented in the books, and introducing English dialects to students through the coursbooks is good in accordance to the fact that recognizing dialects of English will broaden their linguistic knowledge on such a language they are learning.
ANALISIS TERJEMAHAN DIALOG YANG MEREPRESENTASIKAN "BALD ON FACE THREATENING ACT" PADA KOMIK "SCROOGE MCDUCK'S GREATEST TREASURE" KARYA CARL BARK
This research is aimed to identify the utterances of bald on record Face Threatening Acts, to analyze its translation techniques and its translation quality in the comic entitled Scrooge McDuck’s Greatest Treasure by Carl Bark. This research is a qualitative research. The source of research is the Scrooge McDuck’s Greatest Treasure comic with its translation and the informant who assessed the translation quality. The data is speech which represent the bald on record utterances. The data are collected using document analysis and Focus Group Discussion. The research found 84 data which represent bald on record utterance in the comic. The translation techniques is dominated by established equivalence. The translation quality shows that the accuracy is 2,85, acceptability is 3 and readability is 2,95
TINDAK TUTUR EKSPRESIF MEMINTA MAAF TERPIDANA KORUPSI DI INDONESIA
This research is in the form of a qualitative descriptive which aims to explain the strategies of expressive speech acts to apologize by convicts of corruption that occurred in Indonesia in 2020. The data is in the form of speeches collected from online media and YouTube using documentation techniques through note-taking. Qualitative research methods using a pragmatic approach. The analysis focuses on how the lingual forms of apologetic speech acts and how the speech act strategies are. used by corruption convicts as well as the speech act function of apologizing. The results of this study were three expressive speech act strategies of apologizing expressed by the convicts of corruption, namely strategies by expressing apologies directly using the word sorry, apology strategies by providing additional explanations, speech act strategies to express apologies express accountability. Meanwhile, there are functions of speech acts in apologizing, namely: rebuilding (reconstructing) trust, rehabilitating oneself (individuals), healing from shame, resolving conflicts, and restoring social harmony
BENTUK KATA RAGAM BAHASA GAUL DI KALANGAN PENGGUNA MEDIA SOSIAL INSTAGRAM
Social media was a proof of the rapid development in information technology. It was in line with the appearance of slang words formed by its users. Most of social media users were teenagers. The rapid of vacabulary creation of slang language was a proof of linguistics creativity formed by social media’s users mostly teenagers. This research aimed to identify words form of slang language found in instagram feeds and comments column. The data was slang words collected by using observation methods with screenshot and note taking techniques. Data was taken from instagram feeds and comments of @dagelan and @memecomic.id. The result showed that words forms of slang language classified into some forms, namely (1) acronym, (2) abreviation, (3) contraction, (4) klipping, (5) walikan form, (6) borrowing from foreign language, (7) association, (8) monophonization, (9) infiltration of vocal letters, (10) words formed by improving from original words, and (11) new words formed of the creativity of instagram users
THE IMPROVED PERFORMANCE OF EDITORS IN FINISHING DRAFTS FOR PUBLICATION
Improvement of editors in performing their jobs. Training on effective language exploitation was conducted to editors of publishers in Klaten Regency. Drafts representing their job before and after the training were colleted to be compared on their language performance in improving the texts. The results show that in general the editors have better performance in finishing the drafts for publication. They are more sensitive in identifying grammar mistakes as well as lexical inappropriateness, so that the texts are more effectively revised and improved
CODE-SWITCHING IN WHATSAPP GROUP: A SOCIAL REALTY AMID COVID-19 PANDEMIC
The current study examined the use of Code-Switching in WhatsApp Group (WAG) to find out what codes were used and switched among users of WA and in particular to identify the rationales for such a discursive practice in their communication amid Covid-19 Pandemic. Data for this study were screenshots of linguistic exchanges in WAG over a period of two days (weekend). Theoretical framework for the use of Code- Switching was highlighted as the basis of data analysis. Findings reveal that most members of WAG employ intrasentential code-switching. Regarding the rationales of code-switching, most members used code- switching to talk about particular topics and to show emphaty. The study concludes that code switching is a social reality in a multilingual and multicultural society of diverse educational background. It is highly recommended that similar studies be conducted in some wider and more diverse strata of people in the use of CS to support a newly coined term ‘Permanent Code Switching’ (PCS)
