    TINDAK TUTUR DALAM PROSES JUAL BELI DI PASAR TRADISIONAL SURAKARTA

    The objectives of this research are: to describe the forms of speech acts and to show the most dominant speech act and the reasons of its use; and to describe and define the politeness principle found in the the goods sale and purchase process at traditional markets in Surakarta.This research used the descriptive qualitive method with the pragmatics approach. Its sources were conversations or dialogues. The data of the research were utterances and their contexts which contain speech acts and which apply the cooperative principle in the goods sale and purchase process at traditional markets in Surakarta, namely: Pasar Gedhe market, Pasar Klewer market, Pasar Ledoksari market, Pasar Nusukan market, and Pasar Mojosongo market. The collection of the data used the listening method. The data were collected through tapping, uninvolved conversation observation, recording technique, and note-taking techniques. They were analyzed by using the means-end techique. The result of the analysis was presented with informal and formal methods.There are five types of speech act employed by the sellers and the buyers to express their intentions, namely: utterances, (b) verdictive utterances, (c) directive utterances, (d) commissive utterances, and phatic utterances. The most dominant speech act used in the goods sale and purchase process at traditional markets in Surakarta is commisive utterances as indicated by 88 data. In relation to the cooperative principle, in the goods sale and purchase process at traditional markets in Surakarta some speech acts adhere to the cooperative principle, but some violate it. The adherence to and violence of the cooperative principle are balanced in term of frequency i.e. 95 data for each. The latter is due to the intentions of the sellers and the buyers to show their politeness.There are applications of the speech act theory, the cooperative principle, and the politeness in the dialogues between the sellers and the buyers in the the goods sale and purchase process at traditional markets in Surakarta Keywords:    Speech act, cooperative principle, sale and purchase process, pragmatic

      The aims of this study are (1) to describe the view of health and sickness in the cummunity of Tambran Kidul village; (2) to describe verbal and nonverbal behavior in healing and preventing the sickness in the cummunity of Tambran Kidul village; (3) to explain the reasons why verbal and nonverbal behaviors are very essential in healing and preventing the sickness on cummunity of Tambran Kidul village; and (4) to describe mindset, view of life, and worldview in the domain of health on the cummunity of Tambran Kidul village, Semin district, Gunungkidul regency.This study is a descriptive qualitative. Data in this study consisted of primary data and secondary data. Primary data in the form of words in the event said the treatment and prevention of illness-disease using interviews and observation with informants (curer). Secondary data were obtained from books and journals by using literature study method. The data analysis used were ethno science and distributional method with the phases of analysis of domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme. The result of the data analysis is presented through formal and informal method.The result of this study shows that (1) there is a view of health and sickness based on cognition system of Javanese cummunity in Tambran Kidul village; (2) there are verbal and nonverbal behaviors such as (a) text of verbal and nonverbal behaviors are in form of micro and macro structures. Micro structure includes introduction, contents, and cover. Macro structures includes setting and scene, participants, purpose dan goal, act sequences, tone or spirit of act, instrumentalities, norms, and genres. (b) co-text which is kinetic or movement and material element (c) cultural, situational, socio-economic, and spiritual context. (3) the verbal and nonverbal behaviors are very essential because of some reasons (a) verbal behaviors is the realization of faith and hope in God; (b) nonverbal behaviors is the realization of a real action and (c) the existence of inner-energy, (4) the mindset of the Tambran Kidul villagers are; keeping a harmony, peaceful and principle of living together, eling lan waspodho remember and keep watch’, respecting forefathers, and living plainly.. The view of life are: tepa slira ‘mutual respect’; ayom ‘peaceful’, ayem ‘serene’, suka ‘happy’; asih samaning titah ‘love of neighbor’; and nglurug tanpa bala ‘attack without troops’, sugih tanpa bandha ‘rich without possessions’, digdaya tanpa aji ‘divine power without talisman’.     Tujuan dari tulisan ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi aspek multimodalitas dalam penerjemahan komik atau cerita bergambar untuk anak dari bahasa Inggris ke dalam bahasa Indonesia. Selain aspek multimodalitas yang ditinjau, hasil terjemahan teks ini juga dianalisis dengan menggunakan analisis wacana kritis untuk mengetahui power abuse dan konteks relasional dari satuan linguistik yang dijumpai dalam teks cerita bergambar “peri kenanga”. Berdasarkan analisis terjemahan cerita bergambar ini, ditermukan bahwa dari sudut pandang multimodalitas, ekspresi sedih, tersipu-sipu, marah, kecewa, dan takut digambarkan dengan perbedaannya di cerita ini. Dengan demikian pembaca mendapatkan makna yang jelas dari ilustrasi atau gambarnya, di samping teks narasinya. Dilihat dari hasil terjemahannya, teks terjemahan cerita ini secara keseluruhan adalah akurat, karena banyak dari ugkapan-ungkapan diterjemahkan secara harfiah. Namun, beberapa kalimat mengalami pergeseran (shifts) bentuk dan makna.

    ANALISIS TERJEMAHAN EKSPRESI SOLIDARITAS DAN KEBERPIHAKAN DALAM TEKS KONFERENSI PERS DAN SIARAN MEDIA TENTANG EKSEKUSI NARAPIDANA (PENDEKATAN TEORI APPRAISAL)

    Background: This study aims to explain the way appraisal resources in the political text are mediated in the translation. The exploitation of appraisal resources in the source text would determine the pattern used by text speakers in realizing text’s purposes while anticipating and controlling the effect after these purposes are achieved. Furthermore, these evaluations are translated using various translation techniques, which would determine the quality as well as translators’ interference and distortion in balancing the text’s purposes and its aftermath. Methods: This descriptive qualitative study include the source of data that are four transcripts of press conference and media release from Australian government regarding Chan and Sukumaran’s executions in English, and the translation in Bahasa Indonesia. There are 349 data of appraisal resources divided into solidarity and alignment expressions, selected through purposive sampling. Data were then classified into the respective appraisal categories, identified by the translation techniques, and analyzed to find the relation with the translation quality.Results: Majority of translation techniques used in solidarity expressions are Established Equivalent, Borrowing, and Literal that keep most of appraisal categories equivalent to those in the source text; while in alignment expressions are Established Equivalent, Reduction, and Modulation resulting in more deviations in the target text.Conclusion: Interference and distortion are used by translators, consciously or not, to realize text’s goals while minimizing the aftermaths of negative evaluations. Keywords:       appraisal, translation technique, translation quality, solidarity, alignment, interference, distortio

    Hotel staffs are obligated to have skills for handling guests‟ requests, especially for housekeeping (HK) and food and beverage (FB) divisions. The services arenot only limited to which are done physically, but also in language issues. HK and FB, who are dominantly not English-educated background, have course,especially for encountering various requests from foreign guests. This article iscomposed by the writer from his experience as English instructor for those staffs.He teaches the English lesson purposed for the staffs so that they can identifythere is a request from the guest and how to respond. The learning was done byusing systemic functional linguistics approach, through modulated interrogativeand inclination clauses, to reach the goal. Both showed exchanges toward goodsand service.     This paper was aimed to discuss speech act patterns in online gamer community and to uncover the details of specific terms used by that community, especially those found in Solo. Some approaches and theories about sociopragmatics were used for data analysis dealing with the types and functions of speech act as well as the specific terms used by that online gamer community stayed in Solo. By implementing context analysis method, data collected from participation observation technique, unstructured interview, and elicitation, speech act types from that community could be specified based on the frequency of usage. The highest to the lowest usage speech act types were directive, assertive, expressive, commisive, verdictive, and declarative.     The article talks about the process of acquiring English as a foreign language between male and female learners in English department, UNIVED. Data in the form of document were collected through students writing on descriptive and narrative texts from 28th September 2015 to 31th October 2015. The data  were analysed through performance analysis in order to find out learners’ acquisition in composing descriptive and narrative text in English, to observe the process of acquiring English grammatical, to investigate learners’ language learning level through their acquisition on English word formation and to compare learners’ acquisition on foreign language based on their gender differences.The findings show that : (1)Description text is a genre that have been well mastered by learners of English in UNIVED (2)Learners have a low ability in acquiring English grammar with misformation and misapplied error category (3)Learners are found in Elementary level based on their acquisition on word format (4) Male learners exceed female learners in acquiring English. In general, the study shows that the acquisition of English as a Foreign Language of male and female learners in UNIVED is in low category. Keywords: descriptive, narrative, grammar, word format, foreign language acquisition

    ANALISIS TERJEMAHAN KALIMAT DALAM SURAT SPONSOR COMPASS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION (KAJIAN IDEOLOGI, METODE, TEKNIK PENERJEMAHAN DAN KUALITASNYA)

    The aims of the study are  to identify types of sentences in the CIF sponsor letters and the text function or translation purpose in target text; to describe the translation techniques, methods, and ideology in achieving the translation purpose; to identify the impact of the translation techniques, methods, and ideology applied to the translation quality in terms of the accuracy of the accuracy, acceptability and readability; and to assess the translation techniques, methods and ideology selected in achieving the translation purpose. This study is a descriptive, qualitative research and focused on a single case. Sources of the data were 10 pairs CIF sponsor letters and the informants who gave information about accuracy, acceptability and readability of translation. Techniques of collecting data were document analysis, queestionnaires and FGD. Purposive sampling was applied in this research. Findings of this research show the followings. The types of sentenses are declaratives,interrogatives, imperatives and exclamatives. The result shows 15 functions of illocutionary act. There are 14 kinds of translation techniques to overcome the translation problems, 13,67% tends to the source text and 86,33% tents to the target text. The translation methods tends to communicative translation method and free translation method with domestication ideology. The impact of the the application of those translation techniques, methods and ideology toward the quality of translation is satisfactory with the average score of 2,84. This value indicates the accuracy, acceptance and readability of this translation is satisfactory. Related with the purpose of translation, the translation in this research successed  in achieving text function or translation purpose. Keywords: Translation, Translation technique, Translation method, Translation ideology, Translation quality

    PRONOUNCIATION QUALITY OF JAVANESE OF ESL STUDENTS IN PRODUCING THE ENGSLSH SOUND: A CASE STUDY OF JAVANESE ESL STUDENTS IN TERITARY LEVEL

    The quality of pronouncing English sounds by Javanese ESL students is much influenced by their way of speaking of their native language. The study aims to examine how Javanese ESL students shift their articulation in producing the English sounds. The data are Javanese ESL students’ speech of English in the forms of words, phrases, and sentences which are collected by means of recording, testing and participant interview. The data analysis applies techniques of comparison and contrast _between RP and Javanese ESL sounds_ in the domain of impressionistic articulatory phonetics which is assisted by using Audio Edit Magic (AEM). The result shows that Javanese ESL students produce consonant sounds by the lack of maximal force and tend to be lenis; while in pronouncing vowel sounds, they tend to produce some as its phonemes. This shifts the NSE/ FSE have perceived intelligibly is 53,8 %. This implies that Javanese ESL students’ shift in pronouncing the English sounds represented in words is still perceived and understood properly by the NSE/ FSE.Key words: pronunciation quality, shift, intelligibility, RP, and impressionistic articulatory phonetics
