    KONSTRUKSI KAUSATIF DALAM NOVEL BERBAHASA ARAB RICHLATU ILAL-GHAD KARYA TAUFIK EL-HAKIM

    Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan konstruksi kausatif pada novel berbahasa Arab ‘Richlatu Ilal-Ghad’ karya Taufik El-Hakim. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan tipologi linguistik. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Metode pengumpulan data menggunakan metode simak dengan menggunakan Teknik catat. Sedangkan metode analisis data menggunakan metode agih dengan teknik dasar bagi unsur langsung. Teknik lanjutan menggunakan teknik baca markah. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) Konstruksi kausatif leksikal dapat ditemukan beberapa contoh dan pola verba yang dipakai merupakan verba pola I. (2) Konstruksi kausatif morfologis dapat ditemukan pada verba pola II, IV, dan X. (3) Konstruksi kausatif perifratis dapat ditemukan pada pola verba

    This research entitled ”An Analysis of Figurative Language in Onlen Short Story Posted on The Jakarta Post” is aimed to found some kinds of figurative language used; she also studies about the meaning of figurative language used in selected short story on online the Jakarta  Post. This research employs the library research in the sense that the researcher visited the libraries to get the data. There are two kinds of data in this research: (1) primary sources and (2) secondary sources. Primary source is firsthand information. Then secondary sources provide secondhand information. In this study, the primary source is short story gained from online Jakarta Post. Then, the secondary source was from books, e-books, journals, English dictionary, observation and documentation that were related to the research which was gained.After the data are gathered, they classified, analyzed, and interpreted by using several theories namely: (1) the theory of Figurative Language by Perrine (1982:61)), Short Story by Klarer (1998:13).Some of the important research findings are presented as follows. First, figurative language has many types, such as metaphor, simile, personification, metonymy, irony, symbol, hyperbole, paradox, alliteration, allusion, onomatopoeia, and many others. Henceforth, all kinds of figurative language cannot be found in all work of literature. There are some types mostly found in the literature, such as simile, personification, hyperbole, metaphor, irony, and metonymy.In this case, the writer only conducted the research in short story. The writer found some types of figurative language in the short story; those are personification, simile, symbol, and onomatopoeia.     THE ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES AND TRANSLATION QUALITY OF DIRECTIVES SPEECH ACT IN THE LITTLE PRINCE NOVEL

    This research deployed translation of directive speech acts with the descriptive qualitative method. Its objective was to describe the translation technique of the directive speech acts and to evaluate the quality of the translation based on accuracy, acceptability, and readability. It employed document analysis and focus group discussion for data collection. It was concluded words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and contained one type of directive speech act. Data were collected through content analysis and validated by rate through focus group discussion (FGD). The result shows that are 14 techniques which are applied in directives speech act translating, those are established equivalence, variation, modulation, implication, explication, discursive creation, transposition, paraphrase, compensation, addition, reduction, borrowing, literal, and generalization. The research result concludes that the deployment of appropriate translation techniques produces a good transition.  The translation techniques affect the translation quality. Established equivalence produces in the accurate quality of the translation. Discursive creation results in a less accurate translation. Moreover, the imperfection of translation quality is affected by the use of reduction techniques

    THE ROLE OF ENGLISH AS LINGUA FRANCA – INFORMED APPROACH IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING TO PRESERVE CULTURAL IDENTITY

    The practice of teaching English as global language that has been widely spread in Indonesia does not fit to promote Indonesian local culture. Most of English language teaching practice pays much attention to students’ understanding relates to their local culture, but the whole process of English Language Teaching (ELT) itself denotes that students do not really apply their local culture in the English language learning. The effort of integrating local culture in ELT is still far from the concept of particularity, practicality, and of possibility. This article provides a conceptual perspective on the role of English as Lingua Franca (ELF) – Informed Approach in ELT in terms of preserving students’ cultural identity. It starts with describing the important issues dealing with the topic, evaluate the previous studies, building argument, and drawing conclusion and recommendation.  The article concludes that the approach needs to be more informed in the whole process of ELT in terms of learning English and preserving students’ local culture in which students are allowed to use English within their local culture rather than only in understanding their culture without practicing.

    DESIGNING SPEAKING MATERIAL FOR ENGLISH CONVERSATION CLUB (ECC) STUDENTS OF SMAN 2 KOTA PEKALONGAN

    The objectives of this study are: 1) to identify the target and learning needs of English Conversation Club students in learning English and 2) to design English learning materials for English Conversation Club in SMAN 2 Kota Pekalongan.This research is classified into Research and Development (R & D). This research was conducted through the following steps i.e.; (1) conducting the needs analysis, (2) analyzing syllabus, (3) designing the material. The subjects of this research were the ECC students of grade ten in SMAN 2 Kota Pekalongan. The data were collected by distributing questionnaires to the students. The questionnaires were administered to find out the needs of the ECC students in learning English.In this research, the researcher designed three units of learning materials with eight tasks in each unit. They are ‘Congratulation’, ‘Complimenting’, and ‘Accepting and Refusing Invitation’.Key Words: Learning Materials, Speaking, EC

    Film is one communication media to deliver message. This study investigates speech act in the film by using pragmatics approarch. Children film is chosen since children indirectly get new vocabulary in the form of word, phrase, or sentence through film. This study is entitled ‘A Pragmatic Study on the Function of Speech Act in Disney Princess Film’. It covers one important thing, such as the function of speech act in children film. This is descriptive qualitative study which reveals the data collection on the film transcript through the character’s dialogue in the film. The result of this study are as follow. The function of speech act in the children film are a) representative speech act is used to stating, insisting, reporting, summarizing, describing, proposing, and confronting; b) expressive speech act is used to asking apologize, praising, regretting, showing like or love, and showing fear; c) commisive speech act is used to promising, offering, and rejecting; and d) directive speech act is used to commanding, ordering, requesting, asking, and forcing. This result shows the function of speech act which is used in children film. Those speech act is usually imitated and restated by the children who watch movie in their daily life

    The purpose of this study to find a variety confirmation language style, and the influence of stilistika dominant aspects in his President official speech. The study was descriptive qualitative research. The data in this study is a lingual unit in the form of words, phrases, or clauses that contains stilistika study. The data sources in this study is official speech of the President of the Proclamation of 70th Independence. The data acquisition techniques is see and note. The results of this research is there are 10 stylistic confirmation style, apositif, redundancy, repetition, alliteration, paralisme, tautalogi, sigmatisme, climax, eksklamasio and enumerasio. The dominant confirmation language is enumerasio with 27.7%.     INTEGRATING ONE OF INTERNAL STRUCTURE OF DISCOURSE CALLED ‘PROCESS’ IN WRITING PROCEDURE TEXT FOR INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

    In this article the researcher applies one of internal structure of discourse called ‘Process’ in writing ‘Procedures text’. Procedure text is a piece of writing that tells us information of making/doing something through several steps/directions. There are two important parts that students have to consider in procedure text; the generic structure and the language features. In the language features, the internal structure of “Process” of discourse integrated. The aim of internal structure of “Process” are offers the procedure/process for how something is done/created. The problem occurs when students ignore the internal structure of discourse, therefore they will face difficulties in writing process.The first step of the researcher did in this research was making a lesson plan and student’ assessment. After finish it the researcher discussed with the expert to get the feedback. Based on the feedback the researcher revised it. Once again researcher discussed with the expert to get the final result of lesson plan and student’ assessment. The next step was conducting try out. It was held on 28th December 2017. The subjects are 3 students of UNY. The subjects are chosen randomly. Based on the research finding, internal structure is applicable in writing. The generic structure and language features are also really helpful for students in writing English especially procedures text. Thus, all of the subjects of the research be able to produce discourse part with the same structure and successfully produce a paragraph of procedure text.

    AN ANALYSIS OF TECHNICAL TOOLS IN TRANSLATION PROCEDURES USED IN HARRY POTTER FIRST NOVEL

    Translating a novel becomes popular nowadays. Meanwhile, there are four technical tools in the translation procedures which are ordinaryly used by the translator; addition, subtraction, elimination and adaptation. Thus, the purpose of this research is to find the four technical tools in Listiana Srisanti’s translation result appeared in the first novel of Harry Potter. Library research is considered as the method of collecting data. The data in the novel that have been collected are analyzed by using the four technical tools. Based on the classification, it is discovered that there are ten data of addition, thirteen data of subtraction, twelve data of adaptation and nine data of elimination. Those data found are representative enough from the whole data in the novel, because the author takes the data by its part from the translated sentences contained the technical tools. In conclusion, the result indicates that the technical tool of subtraction is the most considerable data (13) applied in the novel

Relying on the fact, interaction becomes the main means for teacher and students to exchange their ideas, feelings, opinions, insights, and etc. Especially for the teachers themselves, maintaining interaction with students is considered to be very important thing. In this case, teachers need to employ some proper strategies and approaches in order to deal with such kind of activity. Nowadays, a great number of teachers apply student-centered approach more than teacher-centered one in the way they teach English. Student-centered approach is believed to be able to encourage the teachers to raise their awareness to interact more with the students by implementing Communicative Language Teaching (CLT).
