The Existence of Conventional Television Faces the Trend of Subscription Video Services (Over-the-Top)
Conventional television has been a medium of information and entertainment for decades. Along with the development of technology, entertainment media have become diverse. Traditional television faces competition, one of which is Over-the-Top (OTT) services or subscription video content via the internet. Some OTT service providers in Indonesia are Netflix, Ilflix , Mola TV, Vidio, VIU, Catchplay, Disney+Hotstar, and RCTI+. Throughout Covid-19, OTT users increased due to higher entertainment needs. This paper aims to provide an understanding of the existence of conventional TV facing OTT trends and how the media users’ consumption patterns are changing. A systematic literature review (SLR) was carried out by collecting data and analyzing related research to OTT and TV usage for the last five years. The results show a shift in media consumption patterns among the younger generation, while the older generation tends to be more passive towards new media. The number of OTT users is increasing, but it has not been able to replace television completely. Instead of replacing, OTT is more of a complementary media or alternative media. This is due to subscription fees and technology adaptation are not within everyone’s reach. On the other hand, OTT spoils the audience in terms of flexibility, variety of the shows, and attracts the younger audience segment which is the driver of the increase in the number of users
Squatting in American Culture: A Study on James Fenimore Cooper’s Novel The Prairie
The history of America cannot be separated from squatting. When European people came to the eastern coast of America in 1600s, they had lived in the settlement that did not belong to them. They did not stop living in the settlement, rather, they kept moving to the West to look for better life. The discovery of gold in California made them move to the West although they underwent difficulties along their journey. This study attempts to explore squatting in American culture in James Fenimore Cooper’s novel The Prairie. This research uses Cultural Studies method, in which literary, historical and sociological approaches are combined to analyse a certain phenomenon on a text. History and sociology are used in the research because they complement the existing sources in the literature. The data are mainly taken from James Fenimore Copper’s novel, namely, The Prairie. The novel is used in the research as starting points to describe squatting, and then the development of it can be described in American Culture. Other data are taken from film, magazines, newspapers and historical and sociological articles, as well as articles from American Studies Journal. Based on the research, squatting emerges because the squatters do not have enough money to buy or to rent the land for their settlement. Besides, the squatters usually assume that the land that belongs to Indians can be occupied or owned without having to pay it

Jogja Ora Didol : a Discourse of Resistance to Domination Through Music Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis Study
The freedom of media since the death of the New Order has made its development so significant, especially in Indonesia. Artists have a platform to create creative ideas through media such as creating movies or music. The issue of power that is not in favor of the lower middle social class makes music present as a tool to respond to difficult situations and even become a tool of resistance to the government or those in power. This research is a qualitative study using Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis theory which has three dimensions in the text of the song Jogja Ora Didol by Jogja Hip-Hop Foundation. The musical background of Jogja Hip-hop Foundation and the language used in the song contain resistance. This study aims to see the extent to which the song Jogja Ora Didol influences and builds the power of resistance to the domination that exists in Yogyakarta. The song Jogja Ora Didol was created in conjunction with the many protests of empowered citizens against the massive construction of hotels in the Yogyakarta area. Resistance discourse is viewed from three levels, namely text, discourse-practice, and socio-cultural. This research aims to 1) Represent the text of the song Jogja Ora Didol, 2) The background of the creation of the song and 3) the influence of the song to create and build resistance. The results of this study show that the resistance of word units and metaphors form a unit of song text. In discourse practice, resistance is formed from the process of text production and consumption. Finally, in the sociocultural order, it is the macro factor that gives influence after the presence of Jogja Ora Didol song
The Symbolic Violence In “Imperfect” (Pierre Bourdieu's Review of Critical Discourse Analysis)
The film "Imperfect" (2019) is an Indonesian film that tells the story of the pressure in women's lives related to their body shape. A woman's body that does not conform to developing standards will be pressured to conform to existing standards. Symbolic violence that occurs against women is happening nowadays, and society considers beauty to have an ideal physique, regardless of one's qualities, but women who have an ideal physique are more valued and more attractive. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data collection technique used is observation on imperfect films. To answer this problem, the researcher uses the theoretical approach of critical discourse analysis and symbolic violence from Pierre Bourdieu. The results showed that; 1) discourse about women who have an ideal body, have white skin, are tall, and have straight hair are always considered as women who deserve attention and always get their own privileges; 2) Discourse related to the standard of beauty for women has developed and can lead to symbolic violence because women who do not meet the standards of beauty set above will always be marginalized and compared as a form of symbolic violence
Battle of Islamic Women's Discourse through Popular Culture in Post-authoritarian Indonesia
After the collapse of the New Order, the debate on the discourse of Islamic women developed rapidly in various directions due to the influence of ideas from both the East and the West. Islamic thinkers from within the country are being challenged by the massive influence of global Islamism and the entry of modern western culture. This very complicated battle caused each faction of thought to have to find a way to speak up and propagate their discourse in the public sphere. The most appropriate tool to spread ideology in the midst of the development of society and technology is through popular culture. It can be seen that since the collapse of the New Order, each faction of thought propagated their version of discourse through literary works, magazines, films, entertainment programs on television, social media, to everyday commercial products through their advertisements and taglines. Most of the issues they dispute relate to the role of Islamic women, women's relationships with Muslim men, daily practices as Islamic women, and the image of Islamic women, such as the use of the hijab, clothing and accessories. The results of the research then show that although there are many outside thoughts that enter Indonesian society, the discourse of Islamic women in the traditional-moderate version of Islam as a thought that has long existed in Indonesia is still the majority discourse in society

The transfer of Wahana Kaba Sabai nan Aluih is an opportunity as well as a strategy to maintain the cultural heritage of kaba or oral literature in the era of technological disruption. The transfer of the vehicle is also so that the ancestral heritage in the form of kaba is not lost and the value contained in it can still be conveyed to the next generation of the nation. This study aims to reveal the use of information technology, especially in making the script of Kaba Sabai nan Aluih in the form of animated films and other creative media. This research uses the perspective of the transfer theory theory. The data is sourced from literature studies or narrative texts in articles, books, and journals related to the transfer of vehicles. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. This study shows that the conversion of the kaba into animated films or other creative media can prolong the life of the kaba in society. In addition, to introduce the younger generation to the typical kaba from the Minang area, West Sumatra. In adapting kaba into an animated film requires a touch of technology. Through technology, kaba can be adapted by bringing the perspective of the nation's next generation closer, namely in the form of animated films. The concept of transfer of vehicle is only a bridge in order to be able to pass on the value of the past into the value of the present in a way that is acceptable, digestible, and more attractive to the current generation. The transfer of the vehicle is just an effort to adapt to the context of the times and the interests of the younger generation. Therefore, the more attractive media is technology-based or digital multimodal media. However, the orientation of the child is still led to the book. As long as it has a mature concept, collaboration from the creative media industry, and sufficient funding, the animation can be accepted by the community so that kaba or oral literature is well protected and continues to live in society even though it is in a different world
