Intervention of purple tofu was performed for 28 days and 20 subjects selected purposively and divided into two groups, control and treated. Tofu was served in soup form as much as 85 g. Significant improvement was identified in blood lipid profile of subjects after intervention (p<0.05). Decreased lipid profile occurred in triglycerides, low density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol, and high density lipoproteins (HDL) (175.60±72.61 mg/dl to 123.70±29.50 mg/dl; 133.76±47.00 mg/dl to 98.96±13.81 mg/dl; 207.00±52.26 mg/dl to 154.40±50.89 mg/dl; 48.90±3.24 mg/dl to 30.80±7.09 mg/dl, respectively). Overall, black soy improves blood lipid profile of type 2 diabetes mellitus subjects, involving decreased triglycerides, LDL, and total cholesterol levels, but has not been able to increase HDL levels
Risk Factors of Hypertension among Adult in Rural Indonesia
The aim of this study was to analyse the risk factors of hypertension among adult in rural Indonesia. This cross-sectional study included 112 married couples (112 men and 112 women) aged 45-59 years old and was conducted in Cianjur District, West Java, Indonesia. The measurement of body weight and fat composition used Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) monitor (OMRON® Karada Scan Body Composition Monitor HBF-358-BW). Body height was measured by stadiometer, meanwhile waist circumference was measured by measuring tape. Data on the blood pressure measured by an automatic blood pressure monitor (OMRON® Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor Model HEM-7200). All measurement were done twice in repetition. Chi-square was used to analysed the association between variables and logistic regression was used to analyse the risk factors. The prevalence of hypertension was 49.1% (women 54.5%; men 43.7%). Women had a higher proportion of overweight, obesity, abdominal obesity, and hypertension stage 2 than men. BMI (p<0.05), waist circumference (p<0.05), total body fat (p<0.05), and visceral fat (p<0.05) were significantly higher in hypertension subject than not hypertension. Nonetheless, only waist circumference became the risk factor for hypertension (OR=4.005; 95%CI:1.47-10.914 for high risk). There is high prevalence of hypertension among adult in rural area. Adult, particularly women need to pay attention on their body fat to reduce the risk of hypertension
Teh putih (Camellia sinensis) dan kelor (Moringa oleifera) sebagai antihiperglikemia pada tikus Sprague dawley yang diinduksi streptozotocin
This study aims to examine the antihyperglycemic effect of white tea (Camellia sinensis) and Moringa oleifera when administered as a single component and as mixture in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The study design was experimental. The first step was to analyze epigallocathecingallat (EGCG) content as standard with High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method. The second step was intervention in Sprague dawley rats induced by streptozotocin 40 mg/kgBW. Intervention held for 21 days with given white tea (WT), M. oleifera (MO), mixture of white tea and M. oleifera (WT+MO) and green tea (GT) as positive control with reference dose 100 mg/kgBW EGCG. Rats blood glucose and body weight were measured. The results are WT having the highest content of EGCG (4.46%). MO and WT+MO only have 2.42% and 2.46% of EGCG while GT as control is the lowest (1.29%). Measurements of blood glucose and body weight in group that given WT or MO as single component showed no significant difference with control negative group (p>0.05). Blood glucose decreased significantly in group WT+MO (p<0.05). Administration of WT+MO was able to maintain a stable body weight during the intervention period (p>0.05). The combination of white tea and M. oleifera has better ability as an antihiperglycemic agent compared to single component
Potential of Bioactive Components in Tempe for the Treatment of Obesity
Obesity has become a global health issue and is one of the factors that trigger degenerative diseases. The correct food consumption management could be a solution for treating obesity. Soybean is a food that is rich in bioactive components and has antiobesity properties through various mechanisms. In Indonesia, nearly 60% of the soybeans are consumed in the form of tempe. The process of fermenting soybeans into tempe causes a bioconversion of nutrients and bioactive components, improving the active physiological abilities. The bioactive components that play a role in the treatment of obesity are isoflavones, proteins, and peptides. These bioactive components help in reducing body weight, lowering the body fat ratio and improve lipid profile. Thus, optimation and popularization of tempe as a functional food in the daily menu supported with correct tempe processing could be a solution in treating obesity
