The objective of this study were to analyze the effect of different compliance monitoring cards of iron supplementation and the determinants in female adolescents in Bogor. Design of this study was quasi experimental. There were 240 adolescent girls from 6 different schools in Bogor who participated and allocated into 3 groups: receiving either monitoring card from Health Department (M), monitoring card verified by teacher and parents (M+T), and monitoring card verified by teacher with additional information about anemia and iron supplementation (M+TP). The data of iron supplement consumption compliance, perception of iron supplementation, nutritional knowledge, motivation, parents and teacher support were collected. The results showed, that a significant difference on compliance level among the groups (p<0.05). The M+TP group had the highest compliance level. Weekly compliance rate was higher (15%) compared to compliance during which participants were menstruating. The most determining factor for compliance level was teacher support (p<0.05; OR=4.7; 95%CI;1.5-14.2). The developed monitoring cards can improve compliance of iron supplement consumption on female adolescents
Fortifikasi NaFeEDTA pada cookies ubi jalar kuning sebagai produk alternatif untuk menanggulangi anemia defisiensi besi
The aims of the study were to analyze iron content, beta carotene content and organoleptic test of orange fleshed sweet potato cookies which had been fortified with NaFeEDTA. This reaserch used experimental method with one factor completely randomized design of iron with 100 ppm, 150 ppm and 200 ppm of NaFeEDTA. Analysis of iron content was conducted using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry and analysis of beta carotene was conducted by using spectrophotometry. Then, organoleptic test was conducted using hedonic test. The result of iron content in cookies is 27.97 ppm-53.42 ppm while beta caroten is 83.40 ppm-129.72 ppm. Organoleptic test results in terms of color, aroma, and texture, the fortified cookies were as well-liked as the control ones; taste, however, the panel found the fortified cookies more preferable. The highest level of iron content, beta carotene content and organoleptic test were orange fleshed sweet potato cookies fortified with 200 ppm NaFeEDTA
Association between Blood Lead, Nutritional Status, and Risk Factors of Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus: A Study in Female Traffic Police Officers in Yogyakarta
The research aimed to investigate the association of nutritional status, blood lead level, and risk factors of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in female traffic police officers routinely exposed to lead in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Fifty-four female traffic police officers aged 20-50 year old participated in this cross-sectional study. As risk factors of diabetes and hypertension, Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated from height and weight data while percentage of body fat (%BF) was measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). Energy intake (EI) was assessed using 1x24-hour dietary recall. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) method was conducted to measure blood lead (Pb-S). Blood pressure (BP) was measured using mercury sphygmomanometer while blood glucose (Glu) was measured in laboratory. Pearson’s and Spearman Rank correlation test were performed for statistical analysis. We demonstrated that Pb-S was positively correlated with both systolic and diastolic BP but not with BMI, %BF, and Glu. Meanwhile, there was a correlation between Glu and either BMI or %BF but not EI. Therefore, our study indicates that exposure to lead is correlated with hypertension while nutritional status is more correlated with diabetes mellitus
Probability Method for Analyzing the Prevalence of Calcium, Iron, Zinc, and Vitamin D Deficiencies among Indonesian Adolescents
The objective of this study was to analyse the prevalence of Ca, Fe, Zn, and vitamin D deficiency (micronutrient deficiency-MD) in adolescents using probability method (PBM) and cut-off point method (CPM). This study utilized secondary data from nation-wide Basic Health survey (Riskesdas) 2010 from the Ministry of Health, in which data on nutrient intakes were collected using 24-hour recall. The total subjects were 24,833 Indonesian males and females aged 13-18 years. The nutrient requirement of each micronutrient was derived from the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The prevalence of MD using PBM was analysed by calculating the proportion of subjects with intake of below their requirement in the population. The prevalence of MD using CPM analysed by applying three cut-off point i.e. less than 100% (CP-100), less than 85% (CP-85), and less than 70% (CP-70) of the micronutrient requirement. Results showed that the prevalence of MD was high both calculated by PBM and CPM. In both methods, the prevalence of MD deficiencies were slightly higher in females than in males, and in older age group than younger age group. The prevalence of MD calculated using PBM was higher compared to the CPM-85 and CPM-70, but not always higher compared to CPM-100. Overall, the nutrient density of Ca, Fe, Zn and vitamin D for both male and female adolescents were below recommendations, however the nutrient density of Ca, Zn, and vitamin D in females were higher than in males (p<0,05). This study concludes that the intakes of micronutrient (Ca, Fe, Zn, and , D) among Indonesian adolescent were far below the requirement based on PBM and CPM calculations. In addition, the nutrient density of each micronutrient was classified as inadequate. This implies the importance of improvement in the quantity and quality of micronutrient intakes among Indonesian adolescents through increasing the consumption of fish, meat, eggs, legumes, milk, and green vegetables
Efficacy of propolis supplementation to accelerate healing process and body weight recovery of pulmonary tuberculosis patients
This study aimed to evaluate the pace of curing process and body weight recovery of pulmonary tuberculosis (Tb) patients receiving propolis supplementation. This study was a randomized controlled trial conducted on 50 pulmonary Tb patients that were assigned into three groups as follows: receiving standard-dose antituberculosis drugs (ATDs) + 20 drops of placebo propolis (P0); receiving standard-dose ATDs + 20 drops of propolis with concentration of 6% (P1); and receiving standard-dose ATDs + 20 drops of propolis with concentration of 30% (P2). The results showed that the mean time ratio needed for sputum smear conversion to negative present of acid resitant bacteria in P0, P1 and P2 groups were weeks 10, 8 and 5, respectively. In the second week, mean body weight of P0 and P1 groups decreased by 2.4% and 0.2%, respectively. In contrast, the mean body weight in P2 group increased by 1.5% (p<0.05; Mann-Whitney test). In the same week, mean body mass index (BMI) of P0 and P1 groups decreased by 1.6 and 0.1, respectively. Conversely, the mean BMI of P2 group increased by 0.3. The changes were significantly different (p<0.05). The results conclusively indicated that supplementation of 20 drops of propolis with a concentration of 30% as an adjuvant to standard ATDs for the treatment of pulmonary Tb patients was beneficial to accelerate treatment effect and body weight recovery
Nutritional status of exclusive compared to non exclusive breastfeeding mother
This study aimed to compare the nutritional status of exclusive and non-exclusive breastfeeding mothers with cross-sectional study design. Study location was Gayamsari public health center working area, Semarang city, Central Java Province, Indonesia. Sixteen exclusive breastfeeding mothers and 16 non exclusive breastfeeding mothers were recruited. Mothers with infant aged 4 months were assessed for their anthropometry (weight, height, mid-upper-arm-circumference, and body fat percentage), dietary intakes (24 hours recall in week day and week end) and hemoglobin level. Nutrition fulfillment of dietary intake was calculated based on Indonesia RDA according to age group. Univariate analysis was used to calculate the frequency, independent T-test and Mann-Whitney test were used to analyze differences in assessment results between groups. The results showed that mean aged of subject was 28.3±5.4 years, median parity was 2 childrens, mean BMI was 23.0±4.2 kg/m2. In total, 12.5%, 40.6%, and 46.9% of the subjects were classified as underweight, normal, and overweight respectively. There is no significant difference (p>0.05) in nutritional status between groups. Subjects who fulfill the daily intake recommendation was only 16.1% for protein, 9.7% for fat, 12.9% for vitamin A, 6.5% for vitamin C, 3.2% for folic acid, and 3.2% for calcium. There was no significant difference in daily intake between groups. Mean hemoglobin level of subject was 12.1±1.6 mg/dl. 50% of the subjects were considered as anemic and no significant difference was found between groups (p>0.05). In conclusion, there is no significant difference between exclusive and non-exclusive breastfeeding group in nutritional status, nutrition adequacy and hemoglobin level. Less than half of the subjects were categorized as having a normal nutritional status. None of subject fulfill the daily energy, Fe and Zn requirements
Pemberian tempe menurunkan kadar malondialdehyde (MDA) dan meningkatkan aktivitas enzim superoxide dismutase (SOD) pada tikus dengan aktivitas fisik tinggi
The aim of this research was to analyze the influence of tempe giving to the oxidative stress in rats with high physical activities. This research was true experimental post-test only with control group design on 35 rats. The rats were given high physical activities and tempe treatments for 30 days. Those rats were divided into 5 group, which were: control 1 without giving tempe and supplement, control 2 with the giving of the commercial supplement, treatment 1 with giving 0.75 g tempe/200 g of body weight/day, treatment 2 with giving 1.5 g tempe/200 g of body weight/day and treatment 3 with giving 3 g tempe/200 g of body weight/day. At the end of this research, it was done the examination of the plasma MDA level by using TBARS method and activities of SOD enzyme using spectrofometry. The statistical analysis used One-way ANOVA Tests and Post Hoc LSD. The result showed that the tempe giving at various doses was significantly influenced to the reduction of MDA level (p<0.05) and also significantly influenced to the increasing activities of SOD enzyme (p<0.05). The giving of 3 g tempe was the most effective dose to the reduction of MDA level and the increasing activities of SOD enzyme. The conclusion was tempe could decrease the MDA level and increase the activities of SOD enzyme significantly in oxidative stress rats with high physical activities
Potential of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) extract to reduce blood glucose and malondialdehyde (MDA) liver in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats
The study aimed to analyze the potential of okra to reduction blood glucose and MDA liver in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Design experiment used in this study was pre and post test controlled group design. The first step of this study was analyzed bioactive compound of okra extract. The next step was administired orally of okra extract to control and diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin 50 mg/kgBW for 14 days. Sprague dawley rats were divided into six groups: normal control (N), diabetic control (DM), diabetic treated with green okra extract (GOE) with the dosage of 5 mg/kgBW quercetin and 10 mg/kgBW quercetin, diabetes treated with purple okra extract (POE) with the dosage of 5 mg/kgBW quercetin and 10 mg/kgBW quercetin. Blood glucose were measured each five days and malondialdehyde (MDA) liver in rats were measured in the end of intervention. The following results show that phenolic and quercetin of purple okra extract were higher (3.60%; 0.45 mg/g) than green okra extract (3.58%; 0.27 mg/g). Administration of GOE I, GOE II, POE I and POE II in diabetic rats showed significant (P<0.05) reduction in blood glucose level (115.25 mg/dl; 86 mg/dl; 180.75 mg/dl; 91 mg/dl) and improve level of MDA. These results suggest that intervention of okra extract based on quercetin compound show an antihyperglicemic potential and improve MDA level
Nutritional Status, Physical Activity, and Sedentary Activity of School Children in Urban area, West Java, Indonesia
The purpose of this research was to analyse nutritional status, physical activity, and sedentary activity in school children in West Java, Indonesia. The study used a cross-sectional design and was conducted from October to December 2016. Samples were taken using simple random sampling technique with a total sample of 300 subjects taken among fifth-grade students in seven elementary schools located in Bandung city, West Java. The data collected in this research were anthropometric data such as physical activity and sedentary activity. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson test. The results showed that 21.7% of school children were overweight, while 19.7% were obese. The results of the subject activity, based on nutritional status category, were not significantly different. All subjects with underweight nutritional status were having light activity (100%), the percentage of subjects with normal nutritional status, overweight, and obese were 71.6%, 75.4%, and 74.6%, respectively. The average duration of underweight subjects performing sedentary activities on holidays was 4.2±3.0 hours, 5.4±2.7 hours for normal subjects, 5.8±2.7 hours for overweight, and 5.4±2.5 hours for obese subjects. The proportion of sedentary activity time on holiday among underweight, normal, overweight, and obese subjects were 17.6±12.4%; 22.3±11%; 24.1±11.3%; and 22.3±10.5%. The sedentary activity of children on holiday was not significantly different, but there was a significant difference between the proportion of sedentary time in a day between groups of nutritional status (p<0.05), i.e., normal children and overweight children. The correlation test results indicated a negative correlation between physical activity and sedentary activity, meaning that higher sedentary activity of subjects both in school time and holiday resulted in lower physical activity (p<0.01). The nutritional status, physical activity, and subject sedentary activity based on nutritional status were not significantly different
