Kidney Bean Yoghurt is Effective to Improve Immune System and Sleep Quality Among Elderly in Yogyakarta
This study aimed to assess the effect of kidney bean yoghurt on the immune system and sleep quality in healthy elderly subjects in Yogyakarta. The study included 17 healthy elderly aged 60-81 years. The study design was a quasi-experimental, before and after design conducted at the Abiyoso Institutional Care for elderly in Yogyakarta from April to May 2018. The subjects were given 200 ml kidney bean yoghurt everyday for 14 days. The immune system status was measured by lymphocyte count and the sleep quality was measured by the PSQI with higher scores in dicating worse sleep quality. Paired t-test was used for data analysis. Lymphocyte count after intervention (28.89±7.09) was higher than before intervention (25.96±7.41), and it was statistically significant (p=0.006). The sleep quality index after the intervention (4.88±1.83) was lower than before intervention (8.06±3.09) and the difference was statistically significant (p=0.001). This intervention study indicates that kidney bean yoghurt significantly improves both immune systems and sleeps quality among our elderly subjects
Application of alternate healthy eating index to assess diet quality in male workers
This study aimed to analyze diet quality of male workers. Study design was cross-sectional, involving 101 male workers of PT. Semen Indonesia Tuban, East Java aged 25-55 years old. Subjects were chosen using purposive sampling based on inclusion criterias. US adapted Alternate Healthy Index (AHEI) was used to assess diet quality that consists of 11 components. Components and portions were modified based on Indonesian Dietary Guidelines 2014. The result showed that grains and alcohol components had good score (10) and the lowest score was in sweetened beverages component (1.4). AHEI-score range from 45.1 to 95.7 and the mean was 69.5. More than half of workers (75.2%) diet quality was in need of improvement category (AHEI scores <76.2). Education level and working unit were correlated with diet quality (p<0.05). Workers diet quality in PT. Semen Indonesia Tuban needs to be improved
The safety evaluation of ethanol extract of torbangun leaves (Coleus amboinicus Lour.) on mouse fetal development
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of ethanol extract from torbangun leaves on mouse fetal development. This research used 24 female pregnant mouse. The leaves extract was administered orally at dose level of 0; 0.56; 1.68 and 3.36 g/kg body weight. The extract was given from the first day until the eighteenth day of pregnancy period. The ethanol extract of Torbangun leaves contains flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and steroids. The result showed that consumption of 3.36 g/kg torbangun leaves extract had led to significant differences in the decrease of maternal weight change, number of live fetuses, fetal weight, and fetal length. Consumption of Torbangun leaves extract during pregnancy should be avoided due to its potency to interfere the fetal development.
Hydration status and liver function of young men before and after Ramadan fasting
The objective of this study was to identify and analyse the hydration status and liver function of young men before and during Ramadan fasting (RF). The study design was a prospective cohort into 1st period (one week before fasting) and 2nd period (the last ten days of fasting). The subjects were 18 healthy young men (19-30 years old). Data on dietary intake were collected using food record 3x24h, body composition were collected using bioelectrical impedance analyser (BIA), hydration status and liver function data were measured trough urine and blood sample. This study showed significant differences in body weight, fat body mass, body mass index (BMI), body water, intake of energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, and water, hydration status (serum osmolality and urine density), and liver function (SGOT and SGPT levels) before and during RF (p<0.05). There were significant correlation between fasting status and SGPT levels (p<0.05). The study concluded that Ramadhan fasting has a positive effect to control body weight and improve liver function measured by SGOT and SGPT levels
Development of Cream Soup Made From Combination of Black Soybean (Glycine soja L. merrit) and Red Rice (Oryza nivara) as an Alternative Functional Food for Menopausal Women
This study aimed to develop an organoleptic acceptable cream soup formula made from combination of black soybean (Glycine soja L. merrit) and red rice (Oryza nivara) which met the nutritional requirements and contained antioxidants in the form of snack as a functional food for menopausal women. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatment levels combination of black soybeans and red rice, namely F1 (80:20), F2 (70:30), and F3 (60:40). The results of the hedonic organoleptic test showed that the selected formula was F1 functional cream soup product. The nutrient content analysis showed that the product contained 1.98% water, 1.88% ash, 4.00% fat, 13.36% protein, 78.76% carbohydrates, 17.87% total dietary fiber, 10.71% soluble dietary fiber, 162.59 μg/g total isoflavones, and 254.58 μg/g total anthocyanins. Each portion of the F1 product could contribute 10.66% and 11.73% of the recommended dietary allowances (RDA) for energy and protein for women of menopausal age, respectively. Each portion also had an antioxidant activity of 723.73 mg/100 g (AEAC). The product is safe to consume because its total microbial content was 3.4 x 102 colonies/g. The resulting product has the potential to be a functional food due to its fiber, total isoflavones, and total anthocyanins contents, as well as its antioxidant activity
Nutritional Status, Physical Activity, Oxidative Stress, and Cognitive Function in Pre Elderly and Elderly
This study aimed to analyse the relation of nutritional status, physical activity or oxidative stress with cognitive function of pre-elderly and elderly. A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted on 40 pre-elderly and 35 elderly subjects who were admitted to the Integrated Development Post Program (Posbindu) between September 2014 and January 2015. Anthropometric measurements (weight and height), physical activity, and biochemical data (oxidized low-density lipoprotein[Ox-LDL] and serum malondialdehyd [MDA]) were obtained. Nutritional status was assessed through body mass index (BMI), while the cognitive function was measured by Rey Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF) and Digit Span Backward. The data were analysed using an independent t-test and Spearman’s test with a confidence level of 95%. The study showed that the prevalence of malnutrition among the pre-elderly and elderly were 60.0% and 80.0%, respectively. Concerning physical activity, those who belonged to inactive-sedentary activity based on physical activity level (PAL) ratio were 55.0% and 45.7%, respectively. There were no significant differences in Ox-LDL, MDA levels and cognitive function (p>0.05). Significant negative correlations existed between Ox-LDL and immediate visual memory function (r=-0.289; p<0.05), as well as between Ox-LDL and delayed visual memory function (r=-0.288; p<0.05). The conclusion that visual memory function was only correlated with Ox-LDL
The Impact of Dehydration in the Third Trimesters on Pregnancy Outcome-Infant Birth Weight and Length
This cohort study aimed to analyze the effect of dehydration on pregnancy outcome. A total of 66 pregnant women aged (18-35 years) at second trimester (>12 weeks) of pregnancy was recruited from seven health centers (Puskesmas) Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta from December 2016 to January 2018. Five biomarkers (urine color, urine osmolality, urine specific gravity, serum osmolality, serum sodium) were utilized to determine hydration status. Based on the result, subjects were then assigned to dehydration group (DG) and normal group (NG), 51.5% was in the DG and 48.5%, in the NG respectively. Independent t-tests and Chi-square were employed to answer research questions. There were differences in weight of the mothers in the second and third trimester between the two groups (p<0.05), but no differences in weight gain during pregnancy (p≥0.05). More than fifty percent of subjects suffered nausea and vomiting during pregnancy in the two groups. Water intake level in DG (72.53±14.41%) were lower than NG (118.68±14.37%). The accounted difference in Infant birth weight, length, chest circumference and head circumference; were 491.84 g, 0.98 cm, 0.98 cm, and 1.11 cm, respectively where infant from the NG had higher measurements than DG. After adjustment for water intake level, the infant birth weight and length in DG (2,798.53±97.85 g; 47.32±0.32 cm) was lower than NG (3,371.77±102.60 g; 49.09±0.33 cm). The accounted difference in infant birth weight and length between the two groups were 596.1 g and 1.8 cm, respectively. Thus in addition to nutrient intake and weight gain during pregnancy, pregnant mothers should also concern for their fluid intake in order to maintain their health condition and feotal growth - development
