    Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake as Risk Factor for Pre-Metabolic Syndrome in Adult Women

    This study aimed to analyse the correlation between sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) intake and pre-metabolic syndrome in adult women. This was a case-control study involving 46 subjects of adult women 40-55 years old in each group. SSB intake and nutrients intake data were obtained through Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) then analysed with NutriSurvey. Statistical analysis done was Chi-Square test. The result showed that case group had an average of waist circumference was 91.9±8.9 cm with a minimum of 80 cm and a maximum of 110 cm. Triglyceride levels in blood had average 166.8±14.4 g/dl with a minimum of 150 g/dl and a maximum of 197 g/dl in case group. The average intake of SSB in pre-metabolic syndrome (case group) was 41.5±1.7 g with minimum and maximum of intake was 12 g and 92.6 g respectively. There was a significant correlation between SSB intake and pre-metabolic syndrome in adult women p<0.05 (OR=3.56; 95% CI:1.243-10.170)

    Fructose Intake Related with Serum Uric Acid Level in Young Adults

    This study aimed to clarify the correlation of fructose intake with uric acid level and blood pressure in young adults. This study used a cross-sectional design, conducted in Padang, West Sumatera province of Indonesia in 2014. The subjects consist of 109 students of Medical Faculty of Andalas University, aged 18–23 years old, were randomly selected to participate. Data on fructose intake were obtained using food frequency questionnaire. Uric acid levels was determined by the enzymatic colorimetric method. Resting blood pressure was measured twice using a sphygmomanometer. Data were analyzed using Rank-Spearman correlation test. The median of fructose intake was 74.3 g (min 23.4–max 160.2). The median of systolic blood pressure was 117 mmHg (min 100–max 145) and median of diastolic blood pressure was 70 mmHg (min 60–max 90). The mean uric acid levels was 5.2±1.56  mg/dl and 25% of the male subject had high uric acid levels. Fructose intake had no significant correlation with SBP (r=0.026; p=0.851) nor with DBP (r=0.051; p=0.712).  However, there was a strong correlation between fructose intake with uric acid level (r=0.660; p<0.001). The study found that fructose intake shows a strong correlation with uric acid level but not with blood pressure in young adult

    Effects of Leadtree Seed (Leucaena leucocephala) Extract in Inhibiting the Increase of Postprandial Blood Glucose Level in Alloxan-induced Diabetic Rats

    This research aimed to add evidence on the effect of white leadtree seed extract (Leucaena leucocephala) on postprandial blood glucose level on white male alloxan induced diabetic rats. This research was an experiment with pretest-posttest control group design. The subjects of this research were 25 white male rats, Wistar strain was divided into 5 groups. Group I was the positive control, which was treated with Acarbose, group II was the negative control, and group III, group IV, and group V were treatment groups and were given white leadtree seed extract of 1.5 g/kg of BW, 3.5 g/kg of BW, and 7.8 g/kg of BW respectively. Blood glucose level was checked before and two hours after treatment. The statistical analysis used one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc test. The result showed that there were no significant differences between group III, group IV, and group V and the positive control group (p<0.05). The best result of inhibition of the increase in blood glucose level was found in 7.8 g/kg of BW (group V) dosage group with average difference of 186.4 mg/dl. In conclusion, white leadtree seed extract could decrease two hour postprandial blood glucose level in white male alloxan-induced diabetic rats and a dosage of 7.8 g/kg of BW was shown to be the most effective

    Cluster Analysis of Food Consumption Patterns among Women of Reproductive Age in Indonesia

    The aim of this study was to cluster the provinces based on the Food Consumption Patterns (FCP) of the Women of Reproductive Age (WRA). This study used secondary data from the 2014 Indonesia Total Diet Study conducted by the Ministry of Health Indonesia. The final subjects included 40.954 healthy WRA aged 15-49 years old. FCP was calculated based on energy adequacy of WRA of nine major food groups for each province. The hierarchical clustering with Ward\u27s method was applied to cluster the FCP of WRA. The results showed that three clusters of FCP were found. The first cluster was characterized by higher intake of cereals and animal foods, but lower intake of tubers, vegetables, and fruits, which implies a high risk of vitamin B6 and C deficiencies. The second cluster was characterized by higher intake of pulses, oil and fat, oily seeds, and sugar, but lower intake of vegetables and fruits as well as animal source foods, which implies high risk in vitamin B1, B3, and B12 deficiencies and overweight. The third cluster was characterized by higher intake of tubers, fruits, and vegetables but lower intake of animal sources foods, pulses, added fat and oily seeds, which implies a high risk in animal protein, fat, calcium, iron, vitamin B2, and folic acid deficiencies

    The Potential of White Tea (Camellia sinensis) and Kelor (Moringa oleifera) in Improving Lipid Profile and Histopathological Features of Pancreas in Streptozotocin-Induced Rats

    This study aimed to examine the potential of white tea and kelor in improving lipid profile and histopathological features of the pancreas in streptozotocin-induced Sprague-Dawley rats. The research design was an experimental study with post-test control group design. Catechin content were analysed using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography. Twenty Sprague-Dawley rats (out of 24 rats, 12-week old, 200-300 g) were induced with intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin at a dose of 40 mg/kg BW. Four groups of rats received one of the green tea (GT), white tea (WT), kelor (K), or the mixture of white tea and kelor (WTK) with a dose of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) at 100 mg/kg BW administered orally for 21 days. Measurements of the lipid profile and preparation of histopathological features of the pancreas were performed after the intervention was completed. The results showed that white tea had the highest concentrations of catechin (39.17%), gallic acid (1.09%), EGCG (4.46%), and epicatechin (9.61%) compared to the other tea groups. The TG levels of the WTK group (95±19.35 mg/dl) were significantly different (p<0.05) from the WT and K groups but not significantly different from the normal (105.8±23.89 mg/dl), DM and GT groups. Meanwhile, the HDL levels did not show significant differences in each intervention group (p>0.05). The mean diameter of the islets of Langerhans in the DM group (9.16± 2.56 μm) was significantly different (p<0.05) from the WT (20±8.94 μm), K (17.16±5.26 μm), WTK (18.66±4.17 μm), and N (21.07±8.49 μm) groups but not significantly different from the GT group (14.33±5.24 μm). The histopathological features of the pancreas showed an increase in the diameter of the islets of Langerhans in WT, K, and WTK groups. This study revealed that the mixture of white tea and kelor had the potential to ameliorate triglyceride levels and histopathological features of the pancreas in streptozotocin-induced Sprague-Dawley rat

    High Protein Milk Intervention in Malnourished Children and Its Effect on Weight Gain and Renal Function

    This study aimed to determine the effect of high-protein milk intervention on weight gain and renal function in malnourished children. This research is a randomized controlled trial (RCT). A total of 52 wasting children (BAZ -3<SD<-2) aged 3-12 years were selected by simple random sampling from five primary schools (6-12 years) and two Community Health Center (children below 6 years). Subjects were divided into two groups; control group (26) and intervention group (26). The intervention group was given high-protein milk (HPM) 3x25 g each day for 12 weeks. Body weight, serum creatinine, and urea were measured at week 0 (baseline), 6th (midline), and 12th (endline). The study showed that the body weight of the intervention group significantly increased by 1.54 kg after 12 weeks of high-protein milk consumption. Serum urea and creatinine levels in the intervention group also significantly increased (p<0.05). The increase in serum urea and creatinine levels in the intervention group were still within the normal range (normal serum urea level 15-43 mg/dl and normal creatinine level 0.6-1.2 mg/dl). This suggests that significant increases in urea and creatinine levels of the intervention group were normal because of increased protein intake and body muscle mass and it did not lead to renal function abnormalities

    DASH Diet Quality and Status of Mental Emotional Disorder among Hypertensive Women in Rural Area

    The purpose of this study was to analyse the relationship between diet quality and mental emotional disorder status with the incidence of hypertension in women in rural areas. The study was a cross sectional study with 143 women (71 with normotensive and and 72 with hypertension) in Pondok Bungur Village, Purwakarta District, West Java, Indonesia. The independent variables were dietary qualities based on customized DASH-like diet and mental emotional disorder status, while the dependent variable was hypertension status. Dietary quality was obtained by non consecutive 2 days 24 hours recall, while mental emotional disorder was collected through SRQ 20. Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney were used for data analysis. The DASH-like diet quality of both groups were low thus showed no significant correlation between the DASH diet quality and HT in the study population (p>0.05), as did the status of mental emotional disorder (p>0.05). However, age may be a cofactor in this study because the age differed significantly between the normal and hypertension group (p<0.05). This study shows that there was no difference in dietary quality between HT and non HT group as well as there were no significant correlation between diet quality and mental emotional disorder with HT status albeit segregation by the age group

    Obesity Awareness and Nutrition Behavior of Children in Uşak Province, Republic of Turkey

    This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the awareness of children about obesity and their nutritional behaviors. Obesity Awareness Scale (OAS) and the Food Behavior Scale (FBS) were utilized for the data collection in the present study. The subjects were 699 male and female school children. Analyisis showed a significant correlation between the sub-dimensions of OAS and the total scores of FBS (p<0.05). There were significant differences on levels of OAS and FBS depending on educational status (p<0.05). The total score of FBS was also differ significantly between the healthy participants and the overweight ones (p<0.05). The results showed that there is a positive correlation between the nutritional behaviors and obesity awareness; being or not being engaged in sports does not have an effect in the study subject\u27s obesity awareness and nutrition behaviour; the nutritional behaviours and obesity awareness are depending on the educational level of the mother and the father and the subjects who have good nutritional behaviors, also have normal BMI (Body Mass Index)
