Calcium Bioavailability and Serum Calcium Level in Pregnant Rats After Administration of Milk-Based Drinks Containing Lactic Acid Bacteria
This study aims to evaluate calcium bioavailability through serum calcium level in pregnant rats treated with two Milk-Based Drinks (MBD) containing Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB), i.e Lactobacillus Casei Shirota Strain (LcS) drink, and Four Strains Bacteria (FS) (Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subp. bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophiles). It was a completely randomized experimental study using 24 Sprague Dawley rats. Rats were divided into one negative control group with a normal nutritional status (A0) and three undernourished groups. The undernourished groups were divided into one positive control group (A1), one group receiving MBD containing LcS group (A2), and another group receiving MBD containing FS (A3). All rats received high protein diets during pregnancy. The intervention was started in early pregnancy (D0) until 19 days of pregnancy (D19). Blood samples were collected at the D0 and D19. No significant differences in food intake were found among the rats in all groups. Administration of MBD containing LAB in A2 and A3 showed significant (p<0.05) increment of calcium bioavailability (30.79±6.88%; 20.44±9.04%). Both MBDs treatment containing LAB showed no significant difference in serum calcium bioavailability (p>0.05). The results suggest that MBDs containing LAB are useful in enhancing calcium bioavailability
Validation of Iron-Food Frequency Questionnaire for Assessing Iron Intake in Women of Reproductive Age: A Cross-Sectional Study on Female Undergraduate Students in Indonesia
The aim of this study is to develop and assess the validity of the Iron-Food Frequency Questionnaire (Iron-FFQ) in assessing the iron intake of reproductive age women. This cross-sectional study involved randomly selected female undergraduate students at Jantinangor, Sumedang district, West Java (n=94) as respondents. The validity test compared the iron intake using Iron-FFQ with the 3-Days Food Diary (FD). The iron contents of each food from both methods were obtained from Indonesian Food Composition Table (2017). Iron contents were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test and Spearman’s rank correlation. The results showed significant correlation in iron content between Iron FFQ and the 3 Days FD with r=0.25 for the tubers, nuts, and vegetables group, and r=0.21 for milk and fish (p<0.05). While, statistically non-significant correlations were found for the rest of the food groups (cereal, meat, poultry, eggs, fruits, fats, sugar, syrup, confectionary, and spices) with r ranged from r=0.19 to r=0.01. The average assessment value using Iron-FFQ was lower than the 3-Days Food Diary, especially in the food and beverages group (-100%), sugar, syrup, and confectionary (-93.8%), and vegetables (-88.5%). In conclusion, Iron-FFQ can be declared valid for measuring iron intake from some food group such as starchy tubers, fish, shellfish and shrimp, nuts, vegetables, and milk as they have an acceptable correlation value
Diet Quality and Growth Status of Children Aged Two to Six Years at Tuba Island, Langkawi, Malaysia
This study aimed to determine the prevalence of undernutrition, diet quality and its associated factors among children aged two to six years at Tuba Island. A total of 67 children paired with their mother or caregiver were participated in this study. A questionnaire containing socio-demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements and two days of 24-hours dietary recall was administered. The Malaysian Healthy Eating Index (HEI) was used to assess the children’s diet quality. The prevalence of underweight, stunting and wasting were 22.4%, 20.8% and 17.9%, respectively. Mean total HEI score was 37.1±6.3, which indicate poor diet. The children had low mean scores for vegetables, fruits, milk and dairy products as well as legumes. For socio-demographic factors, number of children per household was associated with diet quality. This study points out that overall low dietary score among these children and their diet quality had no association with their growth status. The low diet quality was prevalent; thus it did not contribute to differences in growth status among these children. Therefore, it is suggested further intervention should be taken to improve the nutrition quality of these children
Development of Stunting Early Detection Kit for Children under Two Years: Validity and Reliability
This study aimed to determine validity and reliability of the new developed Stunting Early Detection Kit (SEDEK). This study was a cross-sectional study. A total sample of 30 children under two years from a Posyandu in Seyegan, Yogyakarta, was involved in the study. Every child was measured using SEDEK and infantometer-WHO Length for Age Growth Chart as the gold standard to find out its validity. Validity was determined by sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value. Reliability in this study was measured by intra-rater reliability, by comparing the first measurement and the second measurement from a rater using SEDEK. The intra-rater reliability determined using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). The results showed no significant difference between length measurements using SEDEK and the gold standards (p>0.05). The SEDEK sensitivity was 80%, specificity 85%, positive predictive value 72.7%, negative predictive value 89.5%. SEDEK reliability is demonstrated by ICC of 0.781. However, this study suggest that the current SEDEK version has not met the required sensitivity and positive predictivevalue of more than 80% so that it can be used as a detection tool. Further research is needed to improve the quality of SEDEK so that the SEDEK improved version can be used at the community-based health facilities level
Field Trial of Local Nutrition Plans and Programs Monitoring and Evaluation Protocol in the Philippines
The field trial was conducted to establish the reliability in producing similar results between evaluators of the proposed new tools for Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of the nutrition plans and programs in the Local Government Units (LGUs). To do this, orientation activities were conducted to familiarize the 46 M&E team (MET) members evaluating the provincial, municipal, city, and barangay levels in two regions with the proposed tools during the field trial. After the event, the perceptions of the MET members of the tools were gathered by asking them to rate the tools through a self-administered questionnaire, and by noting their written and verbal commentaries about the proposed system. During the field trial, each MET member, as well as the member of the Project Team (PT), individually evaluated the LGUs usingthe tools. Secondary data on the LGUs performance scores using the old system were also gathered. The MET members’ perception was examined based on the median rank of their ratings and content analysis of their insights about the tools, whereas the reliability of the tools was assessed based on the interrater reliability of the MET members’ scores for the LGUs analyzed through paired samples t-Test, Pearson correlation coefficient, intraclass correlation coefficient, and technical error of measurement. The weighted scores of the MET and PT members were also compared. Moreover, the difference in the generated scores between the old and the new system was determined. The findings revealed that the MET members generally have a positive perception of the new system but raised some issues and concerns. Although the reliability of the tools was generally observed, actions are warranted for improvement. The tools generated statistically different scores when used by MET and PT members, and when compared to the existing system. Steps should be taken to improve the reliability of the proposed tools
Physical Activity, Food Consumption, and Breakfast among Normal and Overweight Elementary School Children in Bogor during Covid-19 Pandemic
The objective of this study was to analyze differences in physical activity, quality of food consumption and breakfast between elementary school children with normal and overweight nutritional status in Bogor City of Indonesia during the Covid-19 pandemic. This was a cross sectional study carried out from September 2020 to January 2021 in nine elementary schools in Bogor City. This research was conducted when school from home had been running for about six months. Survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire filled by the subject\u27s parents via google form and Microsoft word and then interviewing via whatsapp. Physical activity measured using the Physical Activity Level (PAL) method and food consumption quality using the Individual Dietary Diversity Score (IDDS). Breakfast quality based on the intake and contribution of energy and protein at breakfast. Result showed that 70% of male and 30% of female subjects were classified as overweight. There was a significant difference in the PAL value between subjects with normal weight and overweight (2.02 vs 1.63, p<0.05). There were no significant differences in IDDS of normal weight and overweight students in both weekday and weekend (p>0.05). However, IDDS scores of students with normal nutritional status was higher (7.08 and 8.60) compared to (6.80 and 6.78) in overweight students during the weekday and weekend respectively. In contrast, the energy and protein intake consumed during breakfast for overweight students was higher (617 kcal/day and 21 g/day) than students with normal nutritional status (477 kcal/day and 18.2 g/day) (p<0.05). This study has shown the importance to educate parents of overweight subjects to increase their children\u27s physical activity as the students with normal nutrition status do as well as to provide breakfast with a more diverse men
Acculturation-Related Factors of Dietary Pattern Changes among Indigenous Adolescents in Mt. Arayat, Philippines
This study aimed to determine the levels of dietary acculturation and factors affecting acculturationrelated changes in dietary patterns of 15 adolescents in an indigenous community in Mt. Arayat, Central Luzon, Philippines displaced after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991. Mixed-methods sequential explanatory design (using modified scales) was employed to measure dietary acculturation; index analyses to evaluate dietary patterns; and focus group discussion to determine factors leading to dietary acculturation. Majority was found to be bicultural (93.33%) and the mean dietary pattern index score was 69.40 implying a need for dietary improvement. Moderate to high levels of dietary acculturation were observed on the traditional food block, while low to moderate levels were observed towards the dominant food block. Various psychosocial factors driving dietary choices cumulatively affect dietary patterns of adolescents experiencing acculturation in this study, including but not limited to: 1) the neighboring communities’ ethnocultural composition facilitates acculturation primarily through language fluency; 2) prevalence of discrimination exerts an external pressure to adopt host culture for social acceptance; 3) economic need for integration to sustain day-to-day activities exists; 4) religious feasts and gatherings centered on foods previously unknown to them have been introduced; 5) food selection behavior shifts due to acquired experiences of food whether sensory or cognitive; and 6) their attitudes towards assimilation majorly characterizes the gradual internalization of host culture
Child Development and Nutritional Status of Children Under Five: A Cross-Sectional Study of a Fishermen Community in Terengganu, Malaysia
This study aims to determine child development, nutritional status and the association between child development and nutritional status. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 60 fishermen’s children under five years old in selected districts in Terengganu. All respondents were assisted by their mothers during the assessment. Child development was evaluated through the Denver II Development Screening Test. Nutritional status was determined via the anthropometry assessment (BMI-for-age and height-for-age). Preponderantly, the prevalence of suspected development delay of children under-five in Terengganu was 31.7%. The prevalence of suspected delay for language, fine motor-adaptive, and personal-social skills were 15.0%, 1.7%, and 16.7%, respectively. BMI-for-age z-score and height for age z-score of these children were -1.62±1.23 and -0.27±1.41, respectively, indicating a normal range; nonetheless, there were still children that were wasted (23.3%), severely wasted (13.3%), stunted (5.0%), severely stunted (1.7%), and at risk of being overweight (1.7%). However, the chi square test showed there was no association found between child development and nutritional status, BMI-for-age and height-for-age (p>0.001), among fishermen’s children under-five in this study. The nutritional status had no effect on the development of these fishermen\u27s children, but may have been influenced by other factors such as stimulating surroundings, parenting abilities, and culture
Effect of Biscuits Enriched with Bilih Fish (Mystacoleucus padangensis) on Growth of Experimental Rats
The research aimed to produce biscuits formulated with Bilih fish and to analyse the effect of Bilih-fish-based biscuits on the growth of experimental rats. Six biscuit formulas were developed using three different amounts of Bilih fish flour (0 g, 20 g, and 30 g added to one formula dough) and two flavors (chocolate and vanilla). One biscuit formula was selected based on the best organoleptic test. Four treatments were applied to 24 male growing rats (21 day olds of the Spraque Dawley strain) for 28 days using a completely randomized design study. The treatments used were P1 (standard feed), P2 (standard feed + standard biscuits), P3 (standard feed + standard biscuits + pure omega-3 oil) and P4 (standard feed + the best formula biscuit). The parameters measured on rats were weight and tail length. The best formula biscuit based on the organoleptic test was the chocolate-flavor biscuits prepared with 20 g Bilih fish flour. The longest tail length was found in the P4 treatment (2,257±0.52 cm), which was significantly longer than the P2 (1.46±0.34 cm) and P1 (1.34±0.29 cm) treatments. No significant weight differences were found among the rats in all treatments. Hence, the chocolate-flavor biscuits formulated with the addition of 20 g Bilih fish flour increased the linear growth in experimental rats as shown by the significant difference in the tail lengths found in the treatment group
Association of Nutritional Status and Physical Activity Level with Pneumonia in Indonesian Urban Area
The study aimed to overview and analyze the relationship between nutritional status, physical activity and pneumonia in a community in South Jakarta. We analyzed the secondary data from the 2016‒2018. The Programme of Knock on Doors and Serve with Heart (Ketuk Pintu Layani Dengan Hati) (KPLDH) census for the Tebet District in South Jakarta. The census involved 58,627 samples, which were divided into three age groups: children <5 years old, adolescents, and adults. We measured the nutritional status of children <5 years old using the Weight/Height Ratio (WHR) category (z-score), adolescents with Body Mass Index (BMI)/age (z-score) and adults with BMI (kg/m2). Physical activity was measured for adults and adolescent only and categorized as “routine” and “non-routine”. The highest prevalence of pneumonia was found in samples with non-routine physical activity and in adults. Most of the adults who had pneumonia were also had normal nutritional status. Adults with Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) and Severe CED (S-CED) had a higher risk of having pneumonia OR=8.465; CI 95%=5.478‒13.081 for S-CED and OR=3.210; p<0.05; CI 95%=1.895‒5.438 for CED respectively compared to those with normal weight. Adults and adolescents with routine physical activity had a lower risk of having pneumonia (OR=0.496; 95% CI: 0.320‒0.767). Further studies are also needed concerning the relationship of pneumonia with other determinants such as socio-economic status, environmental issues, and nutritent intake
