A STUDY ON THE MAIN CHARACTER’S INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONFLICTS IN EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE MOVIE
Get PDFFreud’s three harmonious personality systems is an important need to be reached by human in their lives. The three systems must be organized well, so that people can satisfy their needs and wants. If the three systems do not work well, it will produce conflicts, include internal and external conflict. In fact, people will feel worry, anxious, and angry in their life in facing and passing their conflicts. This condition is reflected in a movie entitled Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The movie tells about the journey of a-nine-years-old-boy named Oskar in facing the conflicts in his life. Therefore, the author will answer the problems formulation of this study: (1) how the main character’s internal conflicts happen in the story (2) how the main character’s external conflicts happen in the story. This study uses a psychological approach to analyze and interpret data. This study uses a qualitative approach to describe the events clearly and systematically. The result of this study shows that Oskar, the main character of the movie Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, reaches his satisfaction because he successfully gets his wants after he faces conflicts in his life. For the next researchers, it is recommended for students majoring on literature to analyze the character’s conflicts from psychoanalysis point of view. Keywords: main character, internal and external conflicts, Freud’s three systems of personality

Hal ini menyebabkan posisi perempuan tidak sekokoh posisi laki-laki dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat.Tidak hanya di kehidupan nyata, dalam karya sastra pun perempuan ditempatkan pada kelas nomor dua (second class). Novel merupakan karya sastra yang menampilkan cerita fiksi maupun non fiksi dalam bentuk kata-kata. Novel yang akan digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah novel The Heike Story karya Eiji Yoshikawa.Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kritik sastra feminis ideologis dengan konsep “membaca sebagai perempuanâ€. Konsep ini dipakai untuk melihat wujud subordinasi terhadap tokoh perempuan, yaitu Tokiko dan Tokiwa.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Tokiko dan Tokiwa mendapatkan banyak perlakuan subordinasi. Perlakuan itu tidak hanya dilakukan oleh tokoh laki-laki saja namun juga oleh tokoh perempuan lainnya.Sebagai tambahan, disarankan bagi penelitian selanjutnya untuk menggunakan novel yang sama, pendekatan yang sama, namun dengan menganalisis tokoh perempuan yang berbeda. Selain itu penelitian selanjutnya juga bisa dilakukan dengan pendekatan semangat bushido pada tokoh laki-lakinya, pendekatan sosiologi sastra, dan pendekatan psikologi sastra. Kata Kunci : Subordinasi Perempuan, Kritik Sastra Feminis Ideologis, Perempuan Zaman Heian

Novel One Liter of Tears can be analyzed through a variety of approaches one through the psychological approach, in this case the approach of humanistic psychology of Abraham Maslow. This study answers the formulation of the problem, namely, how the needs of multilevel manifestation Aya character in the novel One Litre of Tears through the approach of humanistic psychology of Abraham Maslow. Analyzed from the humanistic psychology of Abraham Maslow's theory of needs through stratified, the authors found evidence that suggests a figure of Aya Kito kink in the middle of her illness by using multilevel needs Maslow, include basic physiological needs, safety needs, the need for love and has, the need for self-esteem, and self-actualization needs. First is the physiological needs are met, such as food. Second, the need for security are met such as the protection and care of people around him to Aya. Then the third, the need for love and has successfully met the form of affection and love and support from people around him that never stops. The four requirements are met for self-esteem and motivation for the provision of support to the Aya from many quarters, and the last is the fulfillment of the need for self-actualization in the form of various kinds of things that have been done Aya to actualize himself in the middle of the limitations he has. MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS MANIFESTED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE FORREST GUMP THE MOVIE
Get PDFA film is one of  literary works. American film has long been popular with recreating American history. Forrest Gump movie  is chosen to be analyzed in this thesis because it shows the reality and the western historical themes. To support the analysis of the main character, some theories of  the Hierarchy of Needs by Abraham Maslows are utilized to get better understanding about the main character. Since the object of the study is a movie, the researcher also use the movie studies. The  formulated research problem  is on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs manifested  by the main character in  Forrest Gump the movie. The result of this study shows that the Hierarchy of Needs by Abraham Maslow is manifested by Forrest Gump, the main character in this movie. Little Forrest cannot walk properly without braces in his legs, but miraculously he can walk and even run. This kind of way  for being secure, from being bullied, brought him to reach all the impossible things that people think he cannot do. The satisfaction for being loved and belonging with his closest people taught him to face his own destiny. Being rich, famous and having a medal of honor, actually, he did not meant to do it. It is just all about caring, protecting and keeping the people around for being safe and having a comfortable live. Finally, he thought that maybe each people have their own destiny or just live floating around accidental-like on a breeze. At the last, Forrest has his destiny as a “godzilionaireâ€, a good friend, lovely husband, and a great man as a son and a father.  The other researchers need to do further studies and carry out other pieces of analysis reveal to the important and useful things in  Forrest Gump  the movie. LANGUAGE FUNCTION FOUND IN AKBAR ZAINUDIN’S BOOK
Get PDFKata Kunci: analisis wacana, fungsi bahasa, buku Akbar Zainudin.  Bahasa digunakan oleh orang untuk memudahkan komunikasi baik melalui wacana lisan maupun wacana tertulis. Karena wacana merupakan penggunaan dalam bahasa, banyak bahasa atau ekspresi memiliki fungsi-fungsi bahasanya. Peneliti melakukan sebuah penelitian tentang fungsi bahasa didalam buku ’10 Jalan Sukses Menghidupkan Prinsip Man Jadda Wajada’. Ada dua pokok permasalahan yang dipecahkan dalam penelitian, yaitu: (1) fungsi bahasa apa saja yang digunakan didalam bukunya Akbar Zainudin? ; (2) fungsi bahasa apa yang paling mendominasi yang digunakan dalam bukunya Akbar Zainudin? Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif untuk menganalisa bagaimana fungsi dari penggunaan bahasa dalam bukunya Akbar Zainudin. Di sini, pendekatan deduktif dalam analisis kata demi kata digunakan untuk pengorganisasian fakta-fakta (yang berupa kata, makna, gambar, simbol, ide, tema, atau pesan yang dikomunikasikan) dalam data untuk membuat suatu kesimpulan. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa kutipan-kutipan dari keseluruhan bab dari buku. Penelitian ini menemukan 5 fungsi bahasa yang digunakan oleh Akbar Zainudin; fungsi directive, poetic, referential, metalinguistic, dan contextual. Fungsi bahasa yang paling mendominasi yang digunakan adalah fungsi referential dan contextual. Ada 2 fungsi yang tidak digunakan oleh Akbar Zainudin, yaitu fungsi emotive dan phatic. Wacana tertulis digunakan oleh penulis buku untuk membangun pemahaman pembaca melalui filosofi kehidupan didalam kutipannya.  Akhirnya, peneliti memberikan saran untuk penelitian lebih lanjut dan untuk mahasiswa jurusan Sastra Inggris. Saran untuk penelitian lebih lanjut, penelitian ini dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman penelitian lebih lanjut karena studi ini merupakan bukti dari fungsi bahasa yang digunakan sebagai motivasi melalui filosofi kehidupan. Kemudian, saran untuk mahasiswa jurusan Sastra Inggris, penelitian ini dapat menjadi salah satu dari kumpulan implikasi mengenai analisis wacana yang menggunakan fungsi bahasa sebagai alat untuk memotivasi pembaca. Dengan adanya studi ini, mahasiswa jurusan sastra Inggris dapat mencari sumber lain dalam menganalisis fungsi bahasa, sehingga mereka dapat menghindari kesamaan pada penelitian. Â
STUDY OF FLOUTING MAXIM FOUND IN SOME COSMOPOLITAN ADVERTISEMENT SLOGANS
Get PDFSlogan that is used by manufacturer to attract the attention of customers usually flouts conversational maxim because it must be short and interesting. This phenomenon attracts the writer to analyze slogan in advertisement, especially cosmetics and body treatment slogans in Cosmopolitan magazine. In this study, the writer intends to identify the conversational maxims flouted in the advertisement slogans and to find out the meanings of the slogans based on Grice’s implicature theory. In order to answer the problems of study, the writer used descriptive qualitative approach and document analysis There are twelve slogans that are analyzed in this study. Only one slogan does not flout any maxim and the others flout at least one maxim. In other words, this advertisement does not briefs enough if the readers do not know the context, less informative, lack of evidence, and one of them is no direct relevance to the product. It happens due to the intention of making the slogan short. Consequently, producers sacrifice information, relevance, clarity, and believability. Context is needed in analyzing the hidden meaning of the slogan. Without knowing the context of the slogan, the readers will have a difficulty in understanding the meaning of the slogan related to the product that is advertised. The hidden meaning of the slogan always brings the intention to promote the product and to persuade the customers to buy it. The writer suggests the next researcher who wants to conduct a similar research to understand the theory of pragmatics, especially flouting maxim and context. It is also expected that the further researchers use another theory to make their study more complete. In addition they can also use other objects, for example conversations in novels or scripts of films as the data. WORD FORMATION PROCESSES OF JARGON FOUND IN PC WORLD MAGAZINE
Get PDFThis study aims to find out the IT jargons, identify the word formation processes and the meaning of the jargons found in the headline’s article of PC World magazine issued in January 2013. The article is selected because it would be able to represent the jargons used in PC World magazine. This study was document analysis used qualitative approach with descriptive method. In this study, the writer found 48 (forty eight) IT jargons, and it showed that there are eight of fourteen word formation processes are used in forming the jargons; alphabetic abbreviation, compounding, coined word, multiple processes, acronym, derivation, blending, and generified word. The writer also found that co-text can be used to analyze the meaning. It can be concluded from the finding that jargon also exists in IT world in order to give a name of IT terms and word formation processes have an important roles in forming them.  Keywords: word formation processes, jargon, PC World Magazine

Meanwhile, the written form can be found in either formal or informal one, for example in the magazine, newspaper, novel, etc. Magazine is one way to get information. Like tourism magazine, people get information about place, hotel and many others things about traveling. Most of them offer news in English.The use of English in tourism magazine normally is not easily understood because there are some specific words that the readers do not know before. In this study, the writer is interested in analyzing word formation processes of traveling terms. It is because word formation processes is a way of forming new words or terms from the use of old words (Yule, 1985).This study is aimed to investigate the kind word formation processes of traveling terms and find out the meaning of the words formation processes of traveling terms in “Black Meetings & Tourism†magazine Nov/Dec 2012 edition. The writer uses Yule’s theory (1985)and O’Grady’s theory (1996) to analyze the data. The result of the study is expected to give significance to the next researchers who are interested in studying morphology especially about word formation processes. GENDER-BASED DIFFERENCES IN COMPLIMENTS AND RESPECTIVE RESPONSES BETWEEN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS AT ILP KEDIRI
Get PDFCompliments are rarely uttered, and Indonesians tend to reject them. Moreover, there are not many studies investigating interlanguage compliments and compliment responses made by learners of English as a second or foreign language (Ernawati, 2004). As compliments are influenced greatly by the gender (Holmes, 1988), the writer conducted a study about compliments and compliment responses performed by teachers and students who are learners of English as a foreign language at ILP Kediri. There are two problems to be solved the study, namely; (1) How do compliments performed by female teachers differ from those performed by male ones? (2) How do compliment responses performed by female students differ from those performed by male ones?This study is categorized as a case study using qualitative approach since it was made of a group of individuals consisting of ILP Kediri teachers and students. To gather the data, the writer observes class activities at ILP Kediri.This study reveals that gender does not always influence the female and male teachers of ILP Kediri in giving compliments to their students and the female and male students in responding them. They share more similarities than differences. The teachers utter a word (Adjective), a noun phrase, or a simple sentence to compliment their students. A compliment in the form of a word is uttered the most by them. Regarding topics of compliments, the female teacher produces compliments on performance/ skill/ ability and on personality whereas the male one produces compliments on performance/ skill/ ability and on appearance. Yet, a compliment on performance/ skill/ ability is performed the most by two of them. Next, the female and male students either disagree or agree with compliments they got. They disagree with a compliment on performance/ skill/ ability by giving no response and agree with a compliment on personality by using a non-verbal acceptance. The differences occur when the male students also disagree with a compliment on performance/ skill/ ability by claiming that the compliment is overstated and showing flaw and agree with it by using non-verbal acceptance and when the female students agreed with a compliment on performance/ skill/ ability by mentioning her friends to transfer the complimentary force and using verbal acceptance and agree with a compliment on appearance by using non-verbal acceptance.The writer suggests ILP Kediri’s teacher keep complimenting their students in order to encourage them in studying and the future researchers conduct studies by obtaining data from different contexts and situations or investigating differences in compliments and compliment responses based on genders with different ages, relationships, or status. Keywords: speech acts, gender, compliments, compliment responsesÂ
