SEMIOTICS ANALYSIS ON MELANCHOLIC MANDARIN POP MUSIC VIDEO ENTITLED WANDERING POET BY JOLIN TSAI

Entertainment media seem very helpful for the society to gain their solace because they can contemplate their experience through the video. This study examines the signs found in Jolin Tsai’s music video entitled Wandering Poet and interprets the meaning of each sign. This study is conducted to answer two problems: (1) What are the semiotics signs found in Jolin Tsai’s Music Video entitled Wandering Poet? (2) What are the interpretations of semiotics signs that found in the Music Video entitled Wandering Poet?.Since the study is related with interpretation in music video, the writer uses qualitative method by using document analysis as a proper method. The writer opted Jolin Tsai’s music video entitled Wandering Poet because the application of black and white has plentiful meanings which related to the prominent theme of Chinese society, isolation and loneliness. The writer accumulates the scenes and then places them based on theme and context. The writer only concentrates on drama scene rather than others since the signs mostly appear on it. In this study, the writer classifies the signs by using Peirce’s typology of signs (1958) and provides the interpretation of each signs indenotative and connotative forms. In order to get more appropriate meaning, thetheory of color by He (2009) is used to enhance the meaning of symbol based onChinese culture.The writer found all types of sign based on Peirce’s typology of sign (1958). The most frequently appearing type is Icon which is 162. Icons mostly appear in a form of visual object since it resembles a thing it signifies. The second frequently appearing type is symbol which is 75. Symbols appear in the form of text and ideas which is built by certain society. Then, the least frequently appearing type is Index which is 57. Indexes appear in the form of gesture and expression. of the actors.Signs appear in Jolin Tsai’s music video entitled Wandering Poet shows that all types of signs merge together to deliver a story.The influence of Chinese culture is very prominent in this video because most of the signs have Chinese elements within it. For the future researchers, the writer suggests to choose another type of music video such as performing based music video and concept based music video for broaden variation in semiotic on music video. SPEECH STYLE USED IN THE MOVIE OF TENDANGAN DARI LANGIT
Full text linkKeywords: Speech style, Tendangan Dari Langit movie, Wahyu.This study analyses the speech styles in some utterances used by the main character in the movie Tendangan Dari Langit. The writer applies Joos (cited inBroderick,1976) as a main theory and Chaer and Agustina (2010) as the supporting theory. There are two problems of the study to be solved. They are to find out the types of speech style and the speech styles which are mostly used by Wahyu in The Movie Tendangan Dari Langit.In this study, the writer used qualitative approach with document or content analysis. The writer analyzed the utterances stated by Wahyu. Then, the writer analyzed the types and the mostly used types by Wahyu based on script of the movie.Related to the first problem, the writer found that Wahyu used all types of speech style in his daily conversation. There are 2 utterances considered as Frozen style, 1 utterance considered as Formal style, 5 utterances considered as Consultative style, 79 utterances considered as Casual style and 32 utterances considered as Intimate style. Also, the writer found that out of 5, there are only 2 types of speech style as the most used by Wahyu. The first is casual style and the second is intimate style. From 118 utterances, there are 79 utterances considered as Casual style and 32 utterances considered as Intimate style.The writer suggests to use another theory of speech style, for example nababan. The other theory like Dr. P. W. J. Nababan (1987) would help the next researchers to conduct the study of speech style in terms of enrich the theory. Then, uses English movie as the subject of the study. Also, the writer suggests to conduct the study of speech style based on novel or short story
A QUALITATIVE OBSERVATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS ON ENGLISH LESSON AT WAHID HASYIM JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN MALANG

While, learning is the acquisition of knowledge or skills through study, experience, or something being taught. In the teaching and learning process, the teacher and students do some activities in the classroom. There are three kinds of activities in the classroom; opening, main and closing activities. Beside activities, there are also some students’ responses toward the English teacher in teaching and learning process. The study is aimed to describe the activities of English teaching and learning process and describe the students’ responses toward the English teacher in the teaching and learning process, especially in the Wahid Hasyim Junior High School Malang. This study shows that there are three activities in the English teaching and learning process; opening, main, and closing activities. Then, these are the students’ responses toward the English teacher; the students felt that the teacher was listened them, explained things clearly, helped them, trusted them, did not get angry quickly, etc.Keywords : Teaching, teacher, learning, learner
COMPREHENSION DISORDER OF THE SCHIZOPHRENIC CHARACTER IN THE MOVIE “DONNIE DARKOâ€

Language is an instrument of communication that people use to convey message, therefore, it is important for human life. However, in the use oflanguage, there are some problems that make a person has language disorder. One of the issues that deals with language disorder is the main character in the movie “Donnie Darko†suffer from schizophrenia. Based on the phenomenon, this study aims to obtain an understanding and explanation about (1) the positive symptoms of schizophrenia causing comprehension disorder and (2) the types of comprehension disorder suffered by the main schizophrenic character in the movie “Donnie Darkoâ€. This study used descriptive qualitative approach. The data were the utterancesand some scenes that containing comprehension disorder produced by DonnieDarko. In this case, the writer used the journal of schizophrenia in the DSM IV(Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 2000) to analyze the firstproblem about the symptoms of schizophrenia and the theory from Andreasen(1979) to analyze the second problem about the types of comprehension disorder. The findings of this study showed there were 20 data which consisted of 23utterances that contained comprehension disorder produced by the main character in the movie “Donnie Darkoâ€. Moreover, there were 2 positive symptoms of schizophrenia, namely delusion and hallucination which made Donnie Darko experienced comprehension disorder. The types of comprehension disorder suffered by Donnie Darko were poverty of content, tangentiality, derailment, circumstantiality and perseveration. Tangentiality mostly occurred in Donnie Darko utterances. The writer suggests for the next researchers who want to analyze comprehension disorder to conduct this study by using different subject and theories. Besides, the researcher can also investigate comprehension disorder experienced by a real patient
KESALAHAN PENULISAN CHOUON DALAM HIRAGANA PADA SISWA KELAS X PEMINATAN SMAN 6 MALANG

Dalam bahasa Jepang terdapat bunyi panjang yang dilambangkan dengan tanda sudut atas (^). Kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas dalam pembelajaran bahasa Jepang yaitu menulis, khususnya dalam menulis lafal bunyi panjang (chouon) sehingga masih terjadi kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh siswa tentang penulisan lafal bunyi panjang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui berapa besar tingkat jenis kesalahan dan penyebab kesalahan penulisan chouon dalam hiragana yang dilakukan oleh siswa kelas X peminatan SMAN 6 Malang.Metode yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah metode campuran kuantitatif dan kualitatif (mixed method) dengan pengumpulan data melalui tes dan angket dari 25 siswa.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 6 jenis kesalahan yaitu kesalahan penghilangan sebesar 56%, kesalahan penambahan sebesar 2%, kesalahan salah formasi sebesar 4%, kesalahan menganalogi sebesar 14%, kesalahan kelompok sebesar 7%, dan kesalahan global sebesar 17%. Selain itu, juga ditemukan 4 penyebab kesalahan yaitu keterbatasan dalam mengingat sesuatu (kelupaan), ketidaktahuan akan pembatasan kaidah, interferensi oleh bahasa pertama (B1)pembelajar, dan penyamarataan berlebihan oleh pembelajar.Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa masih terdapat banyak kesalahan tentang penulisan lafal bunyi panjang dalam hiragana. Penulis menyarankan kepada peneliti selanjutnya untuk melakukan penelitian mengenai kesalahan penulisan chouon dalam hiragana dengan teknik menyimak (chokai). Selain itu, instrumen penelitian melalui angket dapat diganti dengan wawancara agar mengetahui secara detail tentang penyebab kesalahan penulisan chouon dalam hiragana
GAIRAIGO DALAM KOMIK ‘GALS!’ VOLUME 1 DAN 2 KARYA MIHONA FUJII
Full text linkKata Kunci : Goi, gairaigo, komik Pembelajaran bahasa asing menjadi hal yang dibutuhkan untuk menunjang proses komunikasi di era modern. Adanya perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan, teknologi dan kebudayaan juga menjadi faktor yang mempengaruhi penggunaan kata-kata baru yang berasal dari bahasa asing. Oleh karena itu, bahasa yang digunakan oleh suatu negara pasti mendapat interfensi dari bahasa asing, tidak terkecuali dalam bahasa Jepang. Dalam berkomunikasi, masyarakat Jepang tidak terlepas dari penggunaan kata serapan (gairaigo). Pada penelitian ini terdapat dua rumusan masalah yaitu (1) Bagaimana proses pembentukan gairaigo dalam komik ‘Gals!’ Volume 1 dan 2? (2) Alasan apa saja yang mempengaruhi penggunaan gairaigo dalam komik ‘Gals!’ Volume 1 dan 2? Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk mendeskripsikan, menganalisis dan memaparkan hasil analisis dari temuan penelitian yaitu proses pembentukan gairaigo dan alasan penggunaan gairaigo. Sumber data yang digunakan adalah komik ‘Gals!’ volume 1 dan 2 karya Mihona Fujii. Dari sumber data, ditemukan sebanyak 137 gairaigo dengan rincian: 23 kata jenis pembentukan afiksasi, 90 kata jenis pembentukan penyingkatan, 8 kata jenis pembentukan wasei gairaigo, dan 16 kata jenis pembentukan percampuran. Dan alasan yang mempengaruhi penggunaan gairaigo adalah (1) Nuansa makna yang terkandung dalam suatu bahasa asing yang tidak dapat diwakili oleh padanan kata yang ada pada bahasa Jepang dan (2) Kata asing yang dijadikan gairaigo dianggap efektif dan efisien
POLITENESS STRATEGIES IN DRUMLINE MOVIE
Full text linkKeywords: politeness strategies, movie, DrumlinePoliteness strategies use in communication between speaker and hearer has power tomaintain relationship, and decrease the threatening face and message that happens during the interaction. That became the point of departure in this study, in which politeness strategies were used to analyze the characters’ relationship development in a Drumline movie. The purpose of this study were (1) to identify type of negative and positive politeness strategies used by the character for the communication, and (2) to find out characters’ relationship development influenced by the politeness strategies.To answer those questions, Brown & Levinson’s politeness strategies were used as thetheoretical framework, and the research design was descriptive qualitative. Data collection was done through watching movie, classifying politeness strategies, and analyzing the classification.The result showed the Drumline’s characters tend to use negative politeness ratherthan the positive. It reveals that there were 28 data containing politeness strategies, they are 20 negative politeness strategies and 8 positive politeness strategies. At the beginning the characters mostly use positive politeness as introduction or as a socialization starting point, then they frequently use negative politeness strategy to maintain their relationship and it also triggers the character relationship development.This research is expected to contribute to the body of knowledge related to theapplication of Brown & Levinson’s politeness strategy which is used in the movie. It isalso suggested that the next researchers who want to conduct research in politeness strategy use other types of theory for example Leech or Folley, and apply it to other object of the study such as speech, novel, short story, etc. Thus, there will be more variation and knowledge sources related to politeness strategy
SI TENGGANG’S EFFORT IN FINDING CULTURAL IDENTITY DEPICTED IN MUHAMMAD HAJI SALLEH’S SI TENGGANG’S HOMECOMING

Supervisor: Arcci Tusita; Co-Supervisor: Fredy Nugroho Setiawan.  Keywords: cultural identity, post-colonialism, Si Tenggang’s Homecoming   In post-colonial era, binary opposition between West and East affects the mentality and identity the Eastern. For some occasions, the Easterners imitate the Western culture in order to have equality. It may lead to identity crisis in finding cultural identity. The process of finding cultural identity is depicted throughout in a poem written by Muhammad Haji Salleh entitled Si Tenggang’s Homecoming. In this poem, Salleh as the writer portrays how Si Tenggang, as  the figure of the poem adopts the new culture in the Western country when he studies abroad. Therefore, this study  investigates  the finding of cultural identity in Si Tenggang when  he  experiences  a cross cultural exchange with the Western culture  and adjustment process after his homecoming.  Post-colonial criticism  and other theories  proposed by Homi K. Bhabha,  namely  mimicry, hybridity and ambivalence and  the last post-colonial identity, a  theory proposed by Stuart Hall are used to analyze the material research.  The result of this research  shows Si Tenggang’s  adaptation in American culture and Si Tenggang’s re-establishment in Malaysian culture. Throughout this analysis, there are  differences between Si Tenggang’s journey and  his homecoming. During studying abroad, he learns many things about culture and variety  such as mimicking the new culture.  Thus, after  his homecoming Si Tenggang becomes a hybrid figure who is different from common Malaysian. He becomes wiser and mature. Consequently, people in his native country questions his identity as Malay. At that time, he is ambivalent. Yet, after convincing himself and his society in the native country, he is sure with his identity as hybrid figure and positioning himself at the Third Space.  It is concluded that cross cultural exchange has influenced cultural identity in Si Tenggang.   The following researcher is  suggested to explore Si Tenggang’s experiences by using biographical approach. It is aimed to examine the correlation between the poem with the author’s life

Language is used as a communication tool to express someone’s idea and opinion. In delivering the idea or opinion either through spoken or written, there should be meaning behind the words or sentence that is uttered. This research focused on the interpretation of associative meaning in the news article of regional election law in The Jakarta Globe using Leech’s theory (1983). The Jakarta Globe is an Indonesian newspaper that uses English as the language to write its news articles. There are two problems in this study, those are (1) What types of associative meaning used in the articles about regional election law in The Jakarta Globe (2) What are the interpretations of associative meaning found in the articles about regional election law in The Jakarta Globe. This study used qualitative approach in analyzing the associative meaning. Document analysis is also used here because the data in this study are taken from news article in a form of written text. The result of this study showed that there are fifty five sentences containing associative meaning. The associative meaning was found in word, phrase, and also sentence. There are twenty five words belonging to reflected meaning, thirty words of stylistic meaning, twelve words of connotative meaning, two words of collocative meaning, and twenty one sentences of affective meaning. Stylistic meaning is the type of meaning that is the most commonly found from the data of this study. It can be caused by the news article about regional election law used many terms that is related with law and formal words. The writer suggests the next researcher to conduct a research associative meaning or the whole types of meaning from Leech with different object such as novel, movie, songs, and so on. SPEECH STYLE OF MALE AND FEMALE CUSTOMERS IN MAKING COMPLAINTS AT TELKOM INDONESIA BANYUWANGI

The way or style when people speak is called as speech style. The writer conducted a study about speech style used by the customers of Telkom Indonesia Banyuwangiwhen they complain to the customer service. The purposes of this study are toinvestigate the types of language styles used by male and female customers when they complain their problems and the possible reasons behind the language styles used by the customers of Telkom Indonesia Banyuwangi.This study used qualitative approach in purpose to the use of clear and systematic description about the data being observed. Descriptive study in textual analysis is used in this study to analyze the conversation of the customers Telkom Indonesia Banyuwangi This study found that there were three kinds of speech style used by male and female customers of Telkom Indonesia Banyuwangi, such as formal style, consultative style and casual style. The data showed that the most dominant style used by the customer was casual style.This study found that only male customer who used formal style when they delivered their complaints, while female customers did not use it. This study also found there were four reasons behind certain styles used, such as social background, age of addressee, speech convergence and speech divergence. Social background and age of the addressee became the most dominant reasons used by the customers of Telkom Indonesia Banyuwangi.The writer hoped that this study can be the guidance for the next researchers who want to conduct the same study.
