English is one of international languages in the world and mainly used in international forums. Because of its importance, Indonesian government decides to make English as a formal subject in schools. Students are expected to have basic competences in four skills those are listening, speaking, reading, and writing comprehensively to reach functional literate. Students should have strategies to improve their proficiency and skill in English. The aims of this study are to find out (1) how language learning strategies applied by students of 11th grade at State Senior High School 3 Malang (SMAN 3 Malang), and (2) how English proficiency levels relate to the use of language learning strategies by students of 11 grade at SMAN 3 Malang. This study applied quantitative research. This study used Strategy Inventory for(SILL) version 7 (EFL/ESL) by Oxford (1990) translated into Bahasa Language Learning Indonesia as the instrument. The English raport score was used to measure students’s proficiency. This study use descriptive analysis and Pearson Product Moment to investigate the use of language learning strategies and the correlation between language learning strategies and English proficiency. The participants were students of 11th grade at SMAN 3 Malang divided into three different levels of English proficiency; those are high, intermediate and low. The results of this study indicate that students are in medium level meaning that they sometimes use those strategies in learning a language. Students with high English proficiency used most metacognitive strategies while intermediate English Proficiency students used most compensation strategies and low English proficiency students used most affective strategies. The positive correlation was found between high English proficiency students and metacognitive strategies and negative correlation was found between low English proficiency students and memory strategies. Based on these findings, students are suggested to apply more metacognitive strategies and combine other strategies in their learning process. For further researchers, it is recommended to examine the language learning strategies in speaking, writing, reading, or listening through interviews and observations. Further researchers are also suggested to use other theories of language learning strategy in conducting research. Keywords: Language Learning Strategies, English Proficienc

This study applies descriptive quantitative approach, aimed at describing the learning styles of BEC students. The subjects of this study are eighty students of Basic English Course taken by random sampling. The data were taken using Perceptual Learning Style Preferences (PLSP) questionnaire, designed by Joy M. Reid. Every number of learning styles is classified into three categories, namely: major, minor, and negligible learning style preferences. The result of this study reveals that the most preferred language learning styles are auditory major learning style which falls into the highest score to the lowest score are auditory with the mean score of 60%, kinesthetic with the mean score of 57.5%, group with the mean score of 57.5%, tactile with the mean score of 47.5%, individual with the mean score of 43.9%, and visual learning style with the mean score of 21.5%. From this study, it can be concluded that every student learns based on their own learning style and has different learning styles which can support their progress in learning. In suggestions, it is expected that the institution can add some facilities to support the learning process for example English LAB. For the students, it can be more effective if they always be consistent listening the material and focus on hearing the teacher’s explanation. For the teachers, they can help students in understanding their learning styles, and for the next researchers can analyze with other measurements and the other model of learning styles to measure students’ success. Keywords: learning styles, Training Class (TC) program , PSLP questionnaires.Â
READING MISCUE ANALYSIS OF SECOND SEMESTER STUDENTS IN STUDY PROGRAM OF ENGLISH UNIVERSITAS BRAWIJAYA
Reading is one of language skills that is important to be mastered. Reading can help the reader to get new information and knowledge through printed media. Reading miscue analysis is one of the main research instruments in reading. As readers, it is important to know their own strategy and skills when reading the text, and Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) can help them to discover it. In RMA, the students are asked to read the text orally, retell the context and discuss together with the writer. The writer conducts a study on reading miscue analysis of three good readers of second semester students in Study Program of English of Universitas Brawijaya. There are two problems in this study: (1) What oral reading miscues do the good reader of second semester students in Study Program of English make? (2) Why do the good readers of second semester students in Study Program of English do the oral reading miscues? In this study, the writer analyses the types of miscue by using theory of Goodman and Burke (1973) and the three cueing systems by using Goodman’s theory (1969). This research used a qualitative method because this study focused on the depth of understanding and the writer records the process of collecting the data. The results of this research showed that even a good reader produced miscues and there were fifty nine (59) miscues, 20 omissions (34%), 17 mispronunciations (29%), 9 substitutions (15%), 8 self-corrections (14%), 3 insertions (5%) and 2 repetitions (3%). There was no reversal miscue produced by the students. The three of the students were good reader, because in retelling session they could predict the word that they did not know and could make a general conclusion in the text. Their skills were good, because they were fluent when reading the text and they were able to comprehend the text. This research hopefully can help the participants to know their own strength and weakness in reading and can be the additional source or teaching materials for the lecturers. The writer hopes it can give new contribution for the next researcher to conduct the same research in different object. Keywords: Reading, Miscue, Miscue Analysis, Retrospective Miscue Analysis, Good Reade

THE DEPICTION OF JEWISH PEOPLE’S STRUGGLE AGAINST NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES IN ART SPIEGELMAN’S GRAPHIC NOVEL MAUS
Jewish people have been facing discrimination and negative stereotyping for ages. Conflicts between the majority and Jewish communities, propagated by racial prejudice, result in violent acts committed by the society to isolate the Jews. MAUS is a biography of Art Spiegelman’s father, VladekSpiegelman, which tells about his experience in surviving the persecution of Jewish people in Poland during World War II, and also about Art Spiegelman’s efforts to defy the lingering stereotypes of Jewish people in the present. This research is conducted to analyze the acts of discrimination and negative stereotyping against Jews and the author’s efforts to defy them. Sociological approach is utilized in this research in order to explain the root of prejudice and discrimination against Jewish people, as well as the negative stereotypes labeled to them. The finding of this research shows that VladekSpiegelman, the main character, faced various violent discriminatory acts inflicted against Jews due to the Nazi’s racial propaganda. The propaganda affected the majority by creating an ingroup-outgroup bias, thus forcing the minority Jews into isolation. Nevertheless, VladekSpiegelman survived using cunningness and hard-work ethic; both are stereotypes highly associated with Jews. On the other hand, Art Spiegelman faced difficulties in portraying his father in the graphic novel, since VladekSpiegelman’s aforementioned positive traits becomes negative in the present. The father-and-son conflict brought Art Spiegelman into self-doubting his identity as a Jew. The self-doubt could be diminished by the realization of VladekSpiegelman’s traits as a survivor, thus boosting Art Spiegelman’s pride as part of the Jewish community.  Keywords: prejudice, discrimination, stereotyping, Jews, MAUS, graphic novel

THE RING OF POWER MANIFESTED IN J.R.R. TOLKIEN’S THE LORD OF THE RINGS AND RICHARD WAGNER’S THE RING OF NIBELUNG
Authors across time and nations may have the similarities in their works. Comparative Study is the field of study which examines the similarities and the dissimilarities between two literary works. However, there are authors who are influenced by another person who is not a writer. For example, English author John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is inspired by a German Composer, Richard Wagner. Thus, the idea of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings shares some similarities and dissimilarities with Wagner’s The Ring of Nibelung becomes the problem of this research. The aims of this research are to analyze and interpret how those works share similarities and dissimilarities. This study uses thematic analysis theory because it analyses how the literary works are compared based on their theme. The theme of the two objects is that the one Ring which has the power to rule the world, thus the comparison is based on the Ring of Power. The data of this study is the trilogy The Lord of the Rings novels and the English version script of The Ring of Nibelung operas. This study reveals that there are five similarities and three differences between the “Two Rings of Powerâ€. The similarities are that first, both literary works have similar theme; second, both the Rings are passed many bearers; third, the tales mention about the God’s existence; fourth, is that the Rings are similar in appearance or shape; and the last is that both Rings are evil. On the other hand, the differences between The Lord of the Rings and The Ring of Nibelung are the origin of the Rings of Power, the symbolization of the Gods and the source power of the Rings. The writer suggests that the next studies, especially when they will be focused on the comparison between The Lord of the Rings and The Ring of Nibelung, to trace back their roots of inspiration because they may come from same sources. It is also possible for future researchers to investigate the novels by using other theories, for example the myth theory. The two works can also be approached by using different analysis subject that is the intrinsic aspects in them. Keywords: Ring of Power, comparison, similarity, dissimilarity
