THE CONCEPT OF ISYQ REFLECTED IN MRS GUMP’S TEACHING IN MOVIE ENTITLED FORREST GUMP
Get PDFKeywords: Existentialism, Theistic Existentialism, Concept of IsyqHistorically, existentialism has emerged in the early 19th century. It appears as amovement of thought that opposes rationalism and intellectualism regime with deep roots in Western philosophy. Spirit of freedom is the soul of existentialism.Existentialism itself has two main branches, Atheistic and Theistic. The main difference is atheistic existentialism refuses God for human freedom, while theistic existentialism believes that by accepting the God, human beings can get their freedom. Theistic existentialism theory covers two main points, which are acceptance of God in freedom and concept of isyq and sawal. It explains about the existence of God as an individual with the creative activity, the existency of human as a free and responsible individual, and the existency of God which is not an obstacle for human’s freedom. Isyq is a condition of a human being which follows his freedom and does not give up in any condition, while Sawal is a condition of a human being which escapes from his freedom and gives up to the condition without any struggle. Based on those backgrounds, the writer wants to focus the study on the isyq concept which are reflected in Mrs.Gump’s teaching and its influence to Forrest’s life from the movie entitled Forrest Gump. From Mrs.Gump’s teaching, it can be seen that the concept of Isyq is reflected on it. That reflection and also its manifestation in Forrest’s life are interesting to analyze.In the study, the writer uses Alim Ruswantoro (2004) Theory related with the concept of isyq. The study shows that the concept of isyq reflected in Mrs. Gump’s way in teaching Forrest Gump. Mrs. Gump teaches Forrest that existency of God as an individual with creativity is not an obstacle for human existency, and a human being has his freedom to act, and never give up in any condition. The concept of Isyq theory that reflected in Mrs. Gump’s way of teaching makes Forrest to be able to achieve the same thing as the other normal people and show his existence to the world.The writer suggest the next researchers to analyze The concept of isyq in other media, such as in novel or poetry. The writer also hopes the next researchers add any other theories in existentialism to enrich the knowledge for those who read the thesis. Â
FLOUTED MAXIMS IN THE MAIN CHARACTERS’ UTTERANCES OF WRECK - IT RALPH ANIMATED MOVIE
Get PDFKeywords: Cooperative Principles, Flouting Maxims, Intended Meanings, Wreck-it Ralph Animated Movie Paul Grice proposes a cooperative principle that consists of four maxims to make an effective and efficient communication in conversation. However, in the real life, people do not always obey this principle. This phenomenon is called flouting of maxim. The researcher conducts a research on flouting of maxims in “Wreck-it Ralph†animated movie where the main characters produce utterances flouting maxims. There are two problems to solve in this research: (1) what maxims are flouted by the main characters in the animated movie entitled Wreck-it Ralph? and (2) what are the intended meanings of the utterances being flouted by main characters in the animated movie entitled Wreck-it Ralph?This research used the qualitative approach because it was intended to describe the flouted maxims produced by the main characters in Wreck-it Ralph animated movie. The type of analysis in this research is document analysis. The data were the main characters’ utterances flouting maxims, and the data source was the script of Wreck-it Ralph movie.The results showed that there were four kinds of maxims flouted by the main characters totaling 28 utterances. The mostly flouted is maxim of manner. The next was the maxim of relation, maxim of quantity, and the fewest is maxim of quality. There are some intended meanings found in the utterances flouted by the main characters, such as to make conversation serious or funny, to avoid a conflict, to show good impression, to give proof, to make some surprise, to hide bad issue, and to show some regard.From this research, the researcher suggests that the next researchers analyze the flouting of maxim in different object because there are many interesting objects such as novel, comic, debate, talk show, or the other objects that more unique and interesting that can be found in this modern era
REPRESENTATION OF MURSI’S AND MILITARY’S SUPPORTERS IN KOMPAS AND REPUBLIKA NEWSPAPERS
Get PDFKeywords : Representation, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) The study of language use in newspaper has grown attention from many studies, including Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). CDA explores the language practice used by newspaper which potentially produces bias. Transitivity analysis can be used as applicable and adequate tools in analysing discourse critically. The researcher conducts this study to know the non-neutral attitude in representing Mursi’s and military’s supporters in Kompas and Republika news report. There are two problems to be solved in this study, namely : (1) How Mursi’s and Military’s supporters are represented through transivity process in Kompas and Republika?; (2) What is the meaning of different representation of Mursi’s and Military’s supporters constructed through transitivity process in news report of Kompas and Republika?.The problems are analized using Systemic Functional Linguistic’s theory.This study uses qualitative approach that applies content or document analysis. Document analysis is used because the aim of this study is to describe the meaning and textual analysis of news report from Kompas and Republika. The data used in this study are 36 clauses from a news report of Kompas and 30 clauses from Republika’s containing transitivity processes.This study finds that there are different representations Kompas news report has cover tendency to give more support for military and less support for Mursi’s supporters. It also indicates intentional discrediting and denunciation of Mursi’s supporters. Different from Kompas, Republika has palpable tendency to give more support to Mursi’s supporter and indicates intentional discrediting and denunciation of military. Consequently, the reader can be positioned to participate in military’s action in Kompas whereas they are positioned to participate in Mursi’s supporters’ apprehension.The researcher suggests that the utilizing of critical thinking in CDA with the application of SFL should be more in time and activity thus it will be very useful and helpful for the students to do more. Besides, the next researchers can develop and explore the theory of CDA and SFL in different topics or objects by including the context. So, it will be very useful for rich studies of language especially in critical discourse analysis
AN ANALYSIS OF JAVANESE SLANG USED BY STREET VENDORS IN MALIOBORO
Get PDFYogyakarta is one of the places where Javanese language is developed.The language is used from generations to generations. People say that Yogyakarta is the real Java city. However, the slang of Javanese is also developed in this place. It is known as Boso Walikan Yogya or Boso Prokem. This Javanese slang is a kind of modifications of ngoko Javanese which is reversed in the Javanese writing order. In this study, the researcher identified; (1) What the Javanese slang words used by street vendors in Malioboro are; (2) What the characteristics of Javanese slang used by street vendors in Malioboro are; (3) How the social context of Javanese slang is reflected in street vendors’ daily conversation.The respondents were 26 street vendors in Malioboro aged 30-60 yearsold. The researcher proposed qualitative approach to describe the phenomena of Javanese slang and the answer of the research problems. The type of the study was case study because the researcher needed to do deep investigation about the usage of Javanese slang in street vendors’ daily conversations.There were 105 Javanese slang words used by the street vendors inMalioboro. The researcher gave additional explanation about the meaning of each word to make the data are clearer. The Javanese slang words found are varied and can be used freely, unfortunately, some of them are rude and vulgar therefore the speaker needs to know about the hearer and situation around them as well. Characteristics of the words are creative, flippant, fresh, and short lived. The Javanese slang is used to conceal some topics, such as money, the street vendors’ children, food and beverage, and also people and condition around. In this study, the researcher focused on the slang words, the characteristics of slang, and how the social context of Javanese slang is reflected in street vendors’ interaction. The researcher suggests the next researcher who wants to conduct similarresearch to understand the theory of sociolinguistics, especially the theory related to slang. Furthermore, the next researcher can investigate another aspect of slang, such as the reason of slang usage, and the comparison between slang differences to be the next case study. Â

In society, there are language varieties used by certain groups of community. One of the  varieties  is slang. Ebes Ngalam Column of Malang Post uses the slang as one of the language varieties inside the community. This study is aimed to analize the linguistic forms of the slang used in Ebes Ngalam column and also to  identify  the characteristics and the functions of the slang.  Qualitative approach and document analysis are  employed in this study since the source of data is the word in newspaper column. The data are the slang words  produced by the columnist  under  the pseudo names  Ebes  and Kana  that contain slang. The data were taken from September 2013 issues.  This study reveals that the  linguistic forms of the slang are  found in the column are; pure back reversal, semi back reversal, phonological change, term of address, reduplication and coinage.  Meanwhile,  characteristics  of Malangnese slang are creative and fresh. As the characteristics of flippant and onomatopoeic are not found since there is no word adapted from the sound in nature, and also the Malangnese slang is the language of refinement. In addition, it has been found that the function or the reason for the use of slang by Ebes Ngalam column  is  to entertain or amuse a superior public,  to ease  social intercourse, to intimate or to prove that one belongs or has belonged to a certain community.  Finally, the result of the study  is expected to provide some useful inputs which are valuable for some students that are interested in Sociolinguistics. Karya tulis yang diadaptasi menjadi film disebut ekranisasi. Salah satu film hasil adaptasi dari komikadalah film Beck karya Yukihiko Tsutsumi. Dalam peneletian ini penulisbermaksud untuk menjelaskan perbedaan dan persamaan dalam unsur intrinsikyang terdapat dalam komik dan film Beck, seperti tema, plot, tokoh danpenokohan, latar dan sudut pandang. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan teori ekranisasi serta teoristruktural dilihat dari unsur intrinsik yang meliputi tema, plot, tokoh danpenokohan, latar dan sudut pandang sebagai pedoman dalam menganalisis. Hasil dari analisis yang dilakukan dapat diketahui bahwa antara komik danfilm terdapat perbedaan dan persamaan. Secara umum perbedaan tersebut adalahbeberapa peristiwa yang diceritakan dalam komik tidak semuanya ditunjukkandalam film. Perbedaan tersebut ditunjukkan pada pengurangan peristiwa,penambahan, atau pengubahan. Dalam karya ini ditemukan banyak hal yang berkaitan dengan dunia Barat,sehingga diharapkan pada penelitian berikutnya yang menggunakan karya inidapat menelitinya dengan pengaruh westernisasi yang terkandung dalam komikataupun film Beck

Progam Studi Sastra Jepang, Universitas Brawijaya.  Pembimbing : (1) Dewi Puspitasari  (2) Nadya Inda Syartanti  Kata kunci : Afiksasi, Sufiks, Morfem   Bahasa  Jepang  juga  dikenal  sebagai  bahasa  yang  kaya  dengan  huruf,  tetapi sedikit dalam hal bunyi. Itu dikarenakan bunyi dalam bahasa Jepang terdiri dari lima buah  vokal,  dan  beberapa  buah  konsonan.  Sehingga  itu  adalah  salah  satu  faktor mempermudah  mempelajari  bahasa  Jepang.  Akan  tetapi,  banyaknya  huruf  dalam bahasa Jepang adalah salah satu faktor penyebab sulitnya mempelajari bahasa Jepang. Seperti halnya, dalam materi afiksasi dalam sufiks yang menggunakan huruf kanji家ka,  者 sha,  員 in  dan  士 shi  yang  bermakna  seorang  manusia  dan  membuat kesulitan untuk pembelajar awal bahasa Jepang. Oleh karena itu, penulis memutuskan memilih  sufiks  ka,  sha,  in dan  shi  sebagai  tema dalam penelitian  ini.  Penelitian  ini bertujuan  untuk  menjawab  dari  rumusan  masalah,  yaitu  bagaimana  penggunaan sufiks  ka,  sha,  in  dan  shi  serta  apakah  dapat  sufiks  ka,  sha,  in  dan  shi  saling menyubsitusikan dalam Yomiuri Shinbun.  Penelitian  ini  dilakukan  dengan  metode  deskriptif  kualitatif.  Penulis  akan menganalisis  penggunaan  serta  subsitusi  sufiks  ka,  sha,  in  dan  shi  dengan  cara mengidentifikasi  kalimat-kalimat  yang  mengandung  sufiks  tersebut  dengan menggunakan teori yang ditulis oleh Yamada dan Vince  Berdasarkan  hasil  analisis  yang  dilakukan  oleh  penulis,  maka  dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat 27 data, diantaranya sufiks ka 10 data, sufiks sha 5 data, sufiks in 6 data dan sufiks shi 6 data. Dari data-data tersebut terdapat berbagai macam makna dari masing masing sufiks serta diantara sufiks  ka, sha,  in dan shi  terdapat 3 data  yang  dapat  saling  disubsitusikan.  Untuk  penelitian  selanjutnya,  penulis menyarankan untuk dilakukannya penelitian  tentang  sufiks部  (bu), 隊  (tai)  atau 団 (dan).  Peneliti  berikutnya  dapat menambah  teori-teori,  supaya  hasil  dari  penelitian menjadi lebih maksima

While in mafioso culture Don  is  like a boss or man  that  have  right  to  command  in  criminal  organization,  or  they  called  “La Famiglia†(The Family). After Vito retires from family business his son Michael Corleone takes the control of family and wants to bring Corleone family  stronger, more  feared  and  become  unbeatable.  This  is  a  story  about  an  absolute  power, money and man that control everything behind the scene like a puppet master. This study discusses about  the strive for power as an approach  that  is used in  the  movie. Michael  and  Vito  Corleone  strive  their  power  and  inlfuence  in different way but  they have  the  same goal. Water exploitation threats ecosystem and causes a great damage to environment. One of the causes of the water exploitation is capitalism. The movie entitled Rango reveals some causes and effects of water exploitation caused by capitalism inside the movie.This research applies eccocriticism approach as the main study to analyze thismovie entitled Rango. This study also applies the concept of capitalism and movie studies. The result of the study reveals that water exploitation causes many effects to the environment. In the movie, Mayor who becomes the main antagonist exploits all water sources for his own benefit. The water exploitation causes many bad effects for such three aspects as plant, animal, and the citizen of Dirt City. Those effects cause imbalance to the cycle of ecosystem which disrupt the life of many living beings.For future researchers, it is advisable to conduct further studies on the samemovie but with different approaches. One of the examples is Marxism approach,because Marxism approach can be used to analyze the struggle of the citizen of Dirt City to get enough water
MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS ON THE WORD FORMATION PROCESSES FOUND IN THE TERMS OF MICROSOFT POWERPOINT 2010 PROGRAM

In the word formation study, some words from the foreign languages have probabilities to become the part of English vocabularies.This study aims atinvestigating the word formation processes found in the terms of MicrosoftPowerPoint 2010 Program and the kinds of word formation processes which ismostly used in the terms of Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 Program.In this study, the writer conducted a qualitative research, because thisstudy concerns with how words are processed, and not dealing with number. Thetype of research was document analysis. The source of data in this study wasMicrosoft PowerPoint 2010 program. In conducting this study, the writer usedYule’s theory and supported by Akmajian’s about the kinds of word formationprocesses.Based on the result of the study, the writer found six kinds of wordformation processes in the terms of Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 program, namely: compounding, borrowing, blending, multiple processes, derivational affix, and inflectional affix. The type of word formation process which is mostly used in the terms of Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 Program is inflectional affix.There are many terms found in Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 program that can be constructed through word formation processes especially inflectional affix process.This study is expected to be useful for English Department students. Moreover, the researcher hopes the future researchers who are interested inmorphology, especially word formation processes, may use new completereferences and different object of study. The researcher also hopes this thesis can be a reference or information for English Department students who are interested in conducting a study concerning word formation processes of computer program.
