Keywords: Language Learning Styles, Accelerated Class, Barsch Learning Styles Reference FormEvery individual has different ways in learning something. It also happens in learning language, such as English. The way they learn something is called as learning styles. The writer conducted a research about language learning styles in accelerated class at SMA Negeri 3 Malang. In this study, there are two problems to be solved: (1) What types of learning styles could be used by XI grade students in accelerated class at SMA Negeri 3 Malang and (2) What is the most dominant type of learning styles used by XI grade students in accelerated class at SMA Negeri 3 Malang. The theory used in this study is from Gardner (1985) about types of learning styles. The purpose of this study is to increase the ability of the students in learning as they know their preferred learning styles. The approach used is qualitative study. The participants of this study were twenty two students. The writer collected the data by translating the questionnaire named Barsch Learning Styles Reference Form, distributing the questionnaire to the participants, conducting an interview by using the interview sheet. The data analysis was conducted by identifying each type of learning styles used by the participants, classifying the types of learning styles, explaining the data taken from the questionnaire and interview sheet, and drawing conclusion based on the problems of study and the result of data analysis. The finding of this study shows that each student preferred only one of the three types of learning styles to be their way in learning English. Furthermore, visual learning style becomes the most dominant type of learning styles used by the participants since it got the highest number of students who preferred to use it. From the result of interview sheet, most of the participants preferred visual learning style because they considered it as an easy way to do since their class are facilitated by many visual media to support their study and give some advantages for their learning process and their English score. In conclusion, all types of learning styles based on Gardner’s theory are used by the participants. Most of the participants are visual learners and have more passion and eager in learning English by using visual media. The writer suggests for the teacher at SMA Negeri 3 Malang to give some tests about the types of learning styles for all of the students. For future researchers, the writer suggests to conduct a research not only in Senior High School but might also be in Junior High School. The last suggestion is for Study Program of English at Universitas Brawijaya to add the references about the types of learning styles in learning English
ERROR ANALYSIS ON THE WRITING TASKS PRODUCED BY STUDENTS OF “AZET LANGUAGE CENTRE MALANGâ€
Keywords : error analysis, surface strategy taxonomy, source of error, writingtasksLearning a second language is difficult for learners, especially Indonesians because they must learn about grammar of the second language. The learners sometimes make an error in their learning process because they borrow the rules of their first language to the second language. Writing is the most difficult skill. Therefore, they often make some errors. The writer would like to answer three problems of this study which are: what are the types and sources of errors found on the writing tasks produced by students of “AZET Language Centre Malang†and what is the most frequent type and source of error made in the writing tasks produced by students of “AZET Language Centre Malangâ€. The purposes of this study are to identify the types and sources of errors found and to analyze and find the most frequent type and source of error found. This study uses surface strategy taxonomy based on Dulay’s et al theory (1982) and source of errors based on Brown (1980) and James’ theory (1998).This study uses qualitative research. The data of this study are taken from the writing tasks produced by students of “AZET Language Centre Malangâ€. AZET is one of the famous English courses in Malang which sends its students to study abroad. In this study, there are 10 students as the participant based on their level, period, and target to achieve the high score in IELTS. IELTS is one of the requirements to study abroad. The finding shows that based on the surface strategy taxonomy by Dulay et al (1982), there are Omission (43,1%), Misformation (39,4%), Addition (16,5%), and Misformation (1,1%). Omission has the highest number where errors occured. For the source of error based on Brown (1980) and James (1998), there are Interlingual Transfer (23,94%) and Intralingual Negative Transfer (76,1%). From this finding, all of the students make errors and they do not apply all of the rules necessary in using the target language. It proves that it is difficult for them to achieve their high score target in IELTS.The researcher suggests the next researchers to analyze by using another theory or adding more detailed explanation in the source of error. The next researchers can also broaden the data in order to get more variety of data which are going to be analyzed

There are two problems to be solved in the study, namely: (1) what are lexical distinctions of Javanese dialects in Malang and Madiun spoken by students (2010) of Faculty of Cultural Studies of Universitas Brawijaya and (2) what are factors facilitating the lexical distinctions between Malang and Madiun dialects. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach because the aim of this study is to describe the lexical distinctions of Javanese dialect spoken by Malang and Madiun in students’ school year 2010 of Faculty of Cultural Studies in Universitas Brawijaya. The study reveals that forty one lexicons are included to onomasiology distinction, three lexicons found which are included to semasiology distinction and forty one lexicons which are included to the semantic distinction. After differentiating lexicons through three analyses, the writer obtained the factors that influence the using of lexicons of Malang and Madiun dialects. Those distinctions are facilitated by linguistic factor which are influenced by the use of vocabulary also intonation; and non-linguistic factors which are influenced by the use of behaviour and geographical area. The writer hopes that this research can contribute a better and deeper understanding especially the dialects in Javanese society. She suggests further researchers conduct a similar research in sociolinguistics, especially dialects in different distinction, such as in the terms of phonological and morphological distinction. Further researchers should use another theory to make their research more interesting and find the unique of dialects differences in different object and areas or cases

Therefore the proletarians struggle against the bourgeoisie to reach the equality. The movie which portrays the struggle of proletarian to reach the equality is Elysium. Question arose on how one of the proletarians, Max, struggles to reach equality for low class people in Elysium movie? This study aims to add the reference of Marxist study which focuses on the struggling process by low class people to reach equality. Because of the inequality, people are divided into two classes and separated by the planet that they live. The separating planets and the different treatments for low class people lead the conflict between those classes. Max as the proletarian also has a conflict with his boss and he decides to take an action of struggle through resistance and rebellion by uniting and constituting as a group with the other proletarians. After the action of struggle through resistance and rebellion, he finally gets the equality dreamed by low class people and lessens the social gap although he is sacrificing his life. The writer suggests the next researcher who is interested to analyze Elysium movie as an object to use theory of Eco-Criticism because the crisis of the environment and theory of Science Fiction because there are elements of fiction in Elysium movie
ERRORS MADE BY THE PRESENTERS OF THESIS PROPOSAL SEMINAR IN STUDY PROGRAM OF ENGLISH UNIVERSITAS BRAWIJAYA
Keywords: Error, Error Analysis, thesis proposal seminar, Communicative EffectTaxonomy, global errors, local errors, eighth semester students. One of the most important languages to learn today is English since it is widely spoken around the world. In learning another language including English, a learner sometimes produces errors and Error Analysis (EA) has a methodology to figure them out. One of the methodologies is Communicative Effect Taxonomy. In this study, the writer analyzed errors made by the presenters of thesis proposal seminar in Study Program of English Universitas Brawijaya based on Communicative Effect Taxonomy. Furthermore, the writer proposed two objectives of the study, (1) To find out the types of errors made by the presenters of thesis proposal seminar based on Communicative Effect Taxonomy; (2) To find out whether or not global errors of Communicative Effect Taxonomy made by the presenters of thesis proposal seminar significantly hinder communication between the presenters and the audiences. This study used qualitative approach because the data of this study was taken from 4 students’ presentations which were in the form of words rather than number and statistic. The researcher analyzed the data by using the theory of Communicative Effect Taxonomy. This study revealed that there were 188 errors committed by the students in which 179 and 9 erroneous utterances fall under local error and global error respectively. The local errors consist of 45 lexical errors, 93 morphological errors, and 41 syntactical errors. The global errors consist of 2 wrong order of major constituents, 1 missing, wrong, or misplaced sentence connectors, 1 missing, wrong, or misplaced sentence connectors, and 5 uncategorized global errors. As for the effect of global error to the audience, the writer found out that the global errors did not significantly hinder communication to the audience. The writer suggests the next researchers who want to conduct similar research to use another subject or another theory. Another suggestion is to use the similar theory but with different object

Keywords: Conversational Implicature, Mass Media, Animated Editorial Cartoon, Kabar Bang One.Journalistic product can be an option to communicate ideas and information, especially in criticizing issues. One of the features to share opinions and critics in journalistic product is editorial cartoons. Mostly, the intention in editorial cartoon is implicitly stated, therefore understanding the implied meaning is important. As a result, the cartoonist’s intention can be successfully delivered. In line with this, the writer conducted a study about conversational implicature in Kabar Bang One editorial cartoons, in which most of the utterances contain intended meanings. There are two research problems to be solved: (1) what are the types of conversational implicature found in Kabar Bang One animated editorial cartoons? and (2) what are the implied meanings of the conversational implicature found in Kabar Bang One animated editorial cartoons? The writer uses qualitative approach and document analysis in conducting the study. The data are utterances produced by the characters of Kabar Bang One animated editorial cartoons containing conversational implicature. This study reveals that both of the types of conversational implicature, that are generalized and particularized conversational implicature, are used by the characters in Kabar Bang One animated editorial cartoons. There are 70 utterances found which contain conversational implicature and they either obey or break the conversational maxim. Particularized conversational implicature dominates the results with 60 utterances, and 10 utterances belong to generalized conversational implicature. Particularized conversational implicature is the most frequently found type as context is required in understanding the intentions of the utterances. The context is mostly related to the social issues, politics, government policies, and law. The utterances and choice of words used in the editorial cartoons are aimed to express critics and publics’ view points. The writer suggests that English students who are interested in conducting a research in similar topic use other theories of implicature, such as Levinson’s (1983) and Horn’s (1989). They are also expected to analyze conversational implicature from other media, for instance comics, comic strips, newspaper headlines, presidential debates, or news interviews
