AN ANALYSIS OF JARGONS IN “MILANISTI NGALAM RAYA†COMMUNITY

Language is not only for communication, but also for politics, advertisements, campaign, and some people also use the language to show their community identity. Sociolinguistics is the branch of linguistics which discusses the connection between languages and society. The relationship between languages and society is very interesting to investigate as the sociolinguistic analysis. Language is divided into some varieties. One of the varieties is jargons used in a community. In this study, there are two problems of the study: (1) What are jargons used by the members of Milanisti Ngalam Raya community; and (2) How isthe situational context aspects which consists of field, mode, and tenor applied in statements or conversations produced by the members of Milanisti Ngalam Raya community. Then, the objectives of the study are: (1) To find out the jargons used by the members of Milanisti Ngalam Raya community; and (2) To analyze the situational context aspects which consists of field, mode, and tenor applied in statements or conversations produced by the members of Milanisti Ngalam Raya community.This study used descriptive qualitative method because the object of this researchdeal with the exploration of human problem based on language phenomenon. Thepresent research design was content analysis concerning someone’s utterances. In this study, the data were collected from utterances in Milanisti Ngalam Raya community. This study describes the jargons phenomenon with the common meaning and particular meaning based on Dictionary and depth interview from the expert. This study also analyzes the jargon found based on aspects of situational context in jargon.There are sixteen of jargons used by the members in Milanisti Ngalam Raya community. Jargons have their own meaning for the members. Some jargons haveliteral meaning and jargon meaning, and some others do not. Based on the analysis,situational contexts which consist of field, mode, and tenor are important to see thebackground of the utterances. Situational contexts are influencing the use of wordliterally and specifically that the jargons used in the certain groups or society. Based on field, mode, and tenor, the writer can make a conclusion that jargons are important for the members to reach their purpose or the point of communication.The next study is suggested that they have to pay more attention to the timemanagement during the research to get the deeper information. Furthermore, the next researchers are suggested that they have to analyze the meaning of the jargons based on semantic and pragmatic theories
THE USE OF TABOO WORDS IN PAK DARTO CHARACTER IN TENDANGAN DARI LANGIT MOVIE

Taboo word is one of linguistic phenomena which exist in most languages because every member of society has different way to express his thoughts in language. It is interesting to analyze the various kinds of taboo words which are expressed by men character in the movie Tendangan dari Langit. This study is aimed at describing taboo word phenomena in Tendangan Dari Langit movie. There are two research problems to be solved, those are to find out the types and the purposes of Javanese taboo words used by Pak Darto in Tendangan Dari Langit movie.In this research, the writer used qualitative method with document or content analysis. The writer only analyzed the Javanese taboo words that were spoken by Pak Darto to describe the analysis on types and purposes of taboo words. In analyzing the type of Javanese taboo words, the writer used Wardhaugh’s (2006) theory, while for analyzing the purposes of Javanese taboo words, the writer used Liedlich’s (1973) theory.From the result of analysis, the writer found 10 utterances containing Javanese taboo words by Pak Darto. The writer found that Pak Darto used 5 types of taboo words to express his feelings, they are one’s mother in law, bodily function/human genitals term, death, excretion and creating game/animal. Furthermore, Pak Darto only had 4 purposes in using the taboo words, namely to discredit, to provoke violent confrontation, to an endearment and to provide catharsis.The writer suggests English Department students to conduct the research on taboo language using other theories such as Hughes’s or Holmes’s theory. She also suggests the next researcher to learn more about Javanese taboo language in daily conversation, Javanese poetry or incantation
TRANSLATION METHODS APPLIED IN THE INDONESIAN TRANSLATION OF THE CHILDREN STORYBOOK “DANNY THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD†BY ROALD DAHL

Translation has an important role to transfer the meaning from one language into another language. To produce a good translation, a translator must use suitable methods in translating a text, whether it is written or spoken text. Children storybookis one of the written texts which has an interesting story with illustrations and picturesthat can enhance the imagination of children. This study is meant to find out the translation methods applied in the Indonesian translation of the children storybook“Danny the Champion of the World†by using Newmark’s theory (1988). This study used document analysis of qualitative approach because the data are from the written material. The data are every first paragraph of every chapter which are 22 chapters in the English and Indonesian translations of the children storybook “Danny the Champion of the Worldâ€. The writer found six translation methods which are used by the translator. The result shows that one sentence uses word-for-word translation, twelve sentences use faithful translation, thirty three sentences use semantic translation, eleven sentences use free translation, three sentences use idiomatic translation, and eleven sentences use communicative translation. The translation method which is mostly used by the translator is semantic translation. Semantic translation is very appropriate to be usedbecause the result of translation is very acceptable and comprehensible to the readers. Since the readers are mostly children, it is important to make them understand the text easily. The writer suggests that the next researchers, who want to use children storybook “Danny the Champion of the World†as their object, use other parts of the storybook as the data which consists of the dialogs between the characters, in order that an analysis of translation method of the whole storybook can be completed
THE ROLE OF COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLE IN THE CREATION OF NARRATIVE JOKES IN JOKELOPEDIA: THE BIGGEST, BEST, SILLIEST, DUMBEST, JOKE BOOK EVER!

The cooperative principle, along with the four conversational maxims, describes how effective and efficient communication in conversation is achieved. However, comedians often purposefully flouted these maxims for the humorous effect of their story. The writer conducted a study about the role of cooperative principle, more specifically, the flouting of conversational maxims in the creation of humor in narrative jokes in Jokelopedia: The Biggest, Best, Siliest, Dumbest, Joke Book Ever!. This study aims at finding out the flouted maxims in the narrative jokes, the implicature in the narrative jokes, and how the implicature is expected to create humorous effect in the narrative jokes.This study focuses on the flouting of conversational maxims in three chapters with the most number of narrative jokes in Jokelopedia. This study uses qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomena being studied. Descriptive study in textual analysis is applied in this study to analyze the narrative jokes in the book.This study reveals that all conversational maxims are flouted in order to create humorous effect in the narrative jokes. From 40 narratives analyzed by the researcher, maxim of relation is the mostly flouted maxim with 15 occurrences.The maxim of quantity is the second with 10 occurrences. Then, the maxim of quality and manner are the least flouted maxims with 9 and 6 occurrences. These flouting of conversational maxims gives access to hidden meanings called implicature with which humorous effect is generated. Mostly, the implicature is expected to create humorous effect by showing a contrast between the development of the reader’s expectation and the fact in the story, or by showing the foolish or inappropriate behavior of the characters.The conclusion of the study shows that humor can be invoked by the flouting of conversational maxims. In addition, the emergence of the humor caused by the flouting of maxims also depends on the interpretation of the readers and their encyclopedic knowledge. The writer suggests future researchers to use other theories such as Leech’s politeness principle or Sperber & Wilson’s relevance theory, to find other materials such as visual and auditory media as the source of data, and to analyze the humorous effect which is not caused by the flouting of conversational maxims
UDON SEBAGAI SOUL FOOD JEPANG YANG TERCERMIN DALAM FILM UDON KARYA SUTRADARA KATSUYUKI MOTOHIRO

Salah satu bentuk karya sastra adalah film. Skripsi ini membahas tentang gambaran udon sebagai soul food Jepang. Soul food merupakan sebuah istilah untuk menyebut makanan tradisional orang Afrika-Amerika yang muncul pada masa perbudakan di Amerika Serikat. Menurut digital daijisen dan daijirin daisanpan, soul food adalah masakan spesifik dan populer pada daerah tertentu; suatu makanan yang tidak bisa dilewatkan dalam pola makan sehari-hari oleh individual atau suatu wilayah tertentu. Penulis menggunakan film Udon karya sutradara Katsuyuki Motohiro sebagai sumber data. Film Udon menceritakan tentang Kosuke dan kawan-kawannya dalam sebuah petualangan di dunia kuliner Jepang, khususnya udon, serta antusias masyarakat Jepang lainnya terhadap kuliner Jepang yang disebut-sebut sebagai The Soul Food Of Japan tersebut. Penulis menggunakan kajian food and literary studies dan konsep soul food karena saling berkaitan, dan disusul dengan teori mise-en-scene untuk membantu menganalisis film tersebut. Selain itu, fakta tentang udon di Jepang juga diperlukan karena skripsi ini membahas tentang cerminan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan udon sebagai soul food Jepang.Hasil penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa udon layak disebut sebagai soul food Jepang karena udon merupakan masakan spesifik dan populer di Jepang, dan udon merupakan suatu makanan yang tidak bisa dilewatkan dalam pola makan sehari-hari masyarakat Jepang. Kemudian intisari dari soul food itu sendiri, yakni sebuah identitas dan prinsip hidup. Serta fakta bahwa masyarakat Jepang tidak hanya mengonsumsi udon sebagaimana layaknya makanan, melainkan udon jugadifungsikan ke dalam segi sosial, agama dan budaya.Pada penelitian selanjutnya terhadap film ini, penulis menyarankan untuk menganalisis perubahan sudut pandang Kosuke dengan psikologi sastra atau menggunakan konsep atau disiplin ilmu lainnya yang berkaitan dengan makananseperti nilai estetika terhadap makanan dalam budaya Jepang. Harapannya, penelitian ini dapat membantu para pembelajar bahasa Jepang dan peminat budaya untuk memahami budaya Jepang, khususnya makanan, serta untuk memperluas khazanah bacaan
FENOMENA MONSUTA PEARENTO YANG TERCERMIN DALAM DRAMA MONSTER PARENT KARYA SUTRADARA KOBAYASHI YOSHINORI

Sebuah fenomena dapat memberikan pengaruh positif dan negatif terhadap lingkungannya. Salah satu dampak negatif tersebut adalah fenomena monsuta pearento. Monsuta pearento merupakan sebutan bagi orangtua yang mengajukan permintaan yang cenderung kurang masuk akal dan berlebihan terhadap pihak sekolah. Besarnya dampak yang ditimbulkan oleh fenomena ini bagi hubungan orangtua serta guru, hingga pada tahun 2008 fenomena ini diangkat menjadi sebuah drama berjudul Monster Parent. Penelitian terhadap drama ini memiliki rumusan masalah, yaitu: bagaimana fenomena monsuta pearento tercermin dalam drama Monster Parent karya sutradara Kobayashi Yoshinori. Sosiologi sastra dari Ian Watt digunakan untuk menganalisis drama ini, yaitu pendekatan sastra sebagai cerminan masyarakat. Selain itu, pembagian 5 tipemonsuta pearento menurut Ogi Naoki, yaitu Wagako Chusin Monsuta, Negurekuto Monsuta, No Moraru Monsuta, Gakkou Izon Monsuta, dan Kenrishuchou Monsuta juga digunakan untuk mengetahui cerminan monsuta pearento dalam drama ini.Hasil dari penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa fenomena monsuta pearento tercermin dalam drama Monster Parent. Hal ini ditunjukkan dengan bentuk perilaku dari monsuta pearento, seperti mengubah jadwal kegiatan sekolah hanya berdasarkan permintaan yang tidak masuk akal. Serta contoh penyebab dari perilaku tersebut, seperti cita-cita dan ekspektasi tinggi dari orangtua terhadap anak. Contoh dari dampak perilaku ini juga ditemukan dalam drama ini, seperti renggangnya hubungan orangtua dengan pihak sekolah dan guru. Serta solusi yang ditemukan untuk menghadapi monsuta pearento adalah membina kerjasama yang baik antara orangtua serta guru demi mendukung perkembangan anak
REVEALING HIDDEN POLITICAL AGENDA IN THE PRESENTATION OF MARTIN AS A ZOOPHILE IN EDWARD ALBEE’STHE GOAT, OR WHO IS SYLVIA?

Social phenomenon shows a significant and rapid movement toward the existence of deviant sexual orientation, like zoophilic, a sexual desire to the animals. In assessing the whole life of a zoophile, people are preferable to use some prejudices which attach behind their sexual desire. A drama entitled The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? is interested in portraying about the life of a zoophile in the presentation of the main character named Martin. Yet, this drama describes his image as different from the preconceived notion of society. Hence, it emerges a question that this drama may have political interest toward the existence of a zoophile in the society. Therefore, this research is conducted to verify about this premise.This research uses queer theory, specifically queer politics to investigate the political purposes behind the normalization of a queerness to reject intolerance and discrimination in the society. Besides, this research also applies a qualitative approach through document analysis to examine the data taken from the drama.Some forms of normalization are used to depict the life of a zoophile. First, this drama presents Martin to have 4 (four) positive and 2 (two) major negative traits. Besides, his normalization also covers 3 (three) social roles fulfillment as a part of family and peers group. Furthermore, other presentation shows that he has 2 (two) higher achievement as a smart and successful person. Those findings finally can detect the intention of this drama to portray the real life of a zoophile. It happens because queer politics views that zoophile also undergoes the same life as other normal people, thus a zoophile does not deserve to be treated bad among the society.Based on the study findings, this research concludes that the presentations of Martin have a political purpose to gain societal acceptance for alleviating intolerance and discrimination toward the existence of a zoophile. Furthermore, the next research can be suggested to explore this drama in term of his psychological perspective while having inner conflict to come out as a zoophile or his surrounding responses to reject his zoophile identity using socio-psychological approach. PENGGUNAAN WAKAMONO KOTOBA “YABAI†BERDASAR GENDER DI KALANGAN ANAK MUDA JEPANG (STUDI KASUS MAHASISWA UNIVERSITAS KANAZAWA)

Kata “yabai†saat ini mengalami perluasan makna dari makna dasarnya yang bermakna negatif menjadi bermakna positif yang hanya digunakan di kalangan anak muda saja. Sehingga “yabai†makna positif dapat dikatakan merupakan wakamono kotoba. Meski penelitian mengenai “yabai†mulai banyak dilakukan, namun penelitian mengenai “yabai†yang menitikberatkan gender sebagai permasalahan belum pernah dilakukan. Oleh karena itu, penulis tertarik melakukan penelitian tentang wakamono kotoba “yabai†berdasar gender di kalangan anak muda Jepang. Pada penelitian mengenai wakamono kotoba “yabai†berdasar gender ini, penulis melakukan penelitian dari segi frekuensi penggunaan “yabai†makna negatif berdasar gender, frekuensi penggunaan “yabai†makna positif berdasar gender, frekuensi penggunaan variasi bentuk “yabaiâ€, frekuensi penggunaan “yabai†makna positif berdasarkan contoh situasi dan contoh kalimat, dan frekuensi penggunaan kata keterangan yang dapat digantikan “yabai†dalam kalimat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis kuantitatif, yaitu penelitian yang dilakukan dengan melakukan pengumpulan data dalam jumlah banyak, kemudian berdasarkan data-data tersebut analisa dilakukan secara statistik, dan hasil dari penelitian tersebut digeneralisasikan. Penelitian ini kemudian menghasilkan kesimpulan bahwa wanita lebih banyak menggunakan “yabai†makna positif, terutama pada situasi saat bertemu dengan sesorang yang dianggap menarik. Kemudian kata “yabee†yang merupakan variasi bentuk dari “yabai†yang hanya digunakan oleh pria saja, kini terlihat penggunaannya juga meluas ke kaum wanita. Sedangkan kata “yabakunai?†lebih banyak digunakan oleh wanita. Dan yang terakhir, dalam kata keterangan yang dapat digantikan oleh “yabaiâ€, kata “meccha†dan “sugoi/ sugoku/ sugeeâ€, lebih banyak digunakan oleh wanita

This approach brings to the use ofDivine value which leads to the intuiton, the clue of nature, historical perspective,relating with others, and holding vision by God for humans who seek theirdestiny. John Woodson as the main character on the novel is used as therepresentative objectto study because his personal experience on his journey andadventure towards his efforts to find the ancient manuscript phenomenon thathappens in Peru. The result of this study reveals that the existence of the two roots ofAmerican Philoshophy known as American Transcendentalism, are stillpreserved. John Woodson succesfully manifests the goals of AmericanTranscendentalism that certainly taken from spirituality values’s idea through hisefforts told in the novels. THE PROCESS OF GAINING FAITH IN THE MOVIE ENTITLED THE INVENTION OF LYING

In the movie entitled The Invention of Lying tells about a man whoundergo a process of finding his true identity as a human being and understanding of the existence of God and also the values who created by God for human life.  In connection with the divine principle, Existentialism is a theory that examines the existence of God which is divided into two parts: theistic andatheistic. In theistic view, God is exist and involved in every things happens in humans life, God has a big role in it. But in the opposite, atheistics, Human do not confess any existence of God and  His in volvement. In writing this paper the author uses the theory of existentialism as the basic aproach for assessing thismovie entitled The Invention of Lying. The writer find some significant parts ofthe theistic side on the process of main character experience in understanding the existence of God and devine power in this movie.  Mark Bellison as the main character in this movie is a figure of inspiration that contributes a change of life insights to a lot of people around him. He becomes the only figure conveying concepts of God, death, afterlife, heaven andhell. He also reconstructs a concept of good human being as those who care about others. People give attention to manners and obey rules of God as the creator oflife and the universe. There are three series  in the process of understanding values of the divinity by the main character; find new faith, test of the faith and the final results. However, regardless of the final story in this film, the main character here has found the concept of devinity to prove that God is exists. In addition, people around Mark Bellison also receive Mark’s to convey the concept of God
