LANGUAGE FUNCTION USED BY MARIO TEGUH IN MARIO TEGUH GOLDEN WAYS SHOW

People use it forcommunication in delivering idea, feeling, messages, etc. In society, language has some aspects. One of the aspects that can be stated of language is language function. The researcher conducts a research about language functions that are used by Mario Teguh in Mario Teguh Golden Ways show by using Jakobson and Hymes’ theory. This research focuses on two problems: (1) What elements of communication are used in Mario Teguh Golden Ways show (2) What language functions are used by Mario Teguh.This research uses qualitative approach in document analysis to describe the language functions used by Mario Teguh in Mario Teguh Golden Ways show. The data are transcribed utterances produced by Mario Teguh taken from Mario Teguh Golden Ways entitled Mengatasi Rasa Takut Gagal video which is uploaded on Youtube website.This research reveals that all seven elements of communication are found in Mario Teguh Golden Ways show entitled Mengatasi Rasa Takut Gagal namelyaddresser, addressee, channel, message form, topic, code, and setting. This study also reveals six out of seven language functions used by Mario Teguh. They are emotive function, directive function, phatic function, poetic function, referential function and metalinguistic function. Referential function is the most used by Mario Teguh. He needs to use this function because motivation requires a lot of information to be informed to the audience during the speech. Furthermore, this research shows that there is a combination among the language functions. It means, one utterance does not only bring one function but also two or three functions at once. In short, elements of communication and language function should be seen from the context in a certain condition and situation.The researcher hopes that this research can contribute a better and deeperunderstanding about language function. He suggests the next researchersespecially English Department students conduct the research with differentobjects and theories of language function since this research did not cover allaspects of language function
POLITENESS STRATEGIES PERFORMED BY JAMES BONDIN SKYFALL MOVIE

In doing the communication people need polite language to give respect to the hearer and maintain a good relationship with the hearer. The writer conducted a study about politeness on SKYFALL Movie which presents about politeness phenomena happening in life aspect in this modern era. There are two problems to be solved, they are: (1) what FTA strategies are used by main Character James Bond in SKYFALL movie and (2) what politeness strategies are used by main character James Bond in SKYFALL movie.This study used qualitative approach to gather and analyze the data. It isincluded into document analysis in analyzing and interpreting the utterances produced by the main character of SKYFALL movie through the script of the movie.As for the result of this study, it shows that there are four strategies inperforming FTA applied by the main character of the movie, namely: Bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and indirect strategy. In the application of politeness strategies, Bond mostly used positive politeness in his utterance to show cooperation and effort to minimize the social distance with others. However, he still considers to perform FTA baldly in giving orders to his colleagues.Based on the results, the writer suggests to the next researchers to use otherobjects reflecting more about politeness strategy in daily life and use theories inanalyzing the implicit meanings of the speaker’s utterances more
REPRESENTATION OF THE ESPRESSO AS POPULAR CULTURE IN MALANG

Espresso popularity is marked with the propagation of Coffee houses that use Espresso machines. The representation of Espresso includes things, concepts, and signs.  Furthermore, this study uses Constructionist  approach  referred  to the social practices  constructing  feedback  toward espresso culture.  This study used ethnomethodology  including participant and non-participant observation  through (1) documentation, (2) surveys, and (3) interview conducted in 8oz Coffee Studio, Golden Heritage Koffie, and Coffee Story Malang. This study found out  that the Informant (the apparatus) and the Respondent (customer or society) constructed the same implication of Espresso. Apparatus as the constructor  of Espresso popularity  constructed  the society mindset that Espresso is part of modern society to replace conventional coffee. This mindset is not in a certain social class only, but also in all of social classes which finally like to consume Espresso. Representation of Espresso can be stated as popular culture
NON VERBAL SYMBOLIC MODE IN KEBO-KEBOAN CEREMONY IN DUSUN KRAJAN KABUPATEN BANYUWANGI

Semiotics is deeply concerned about signs including symbol, icon, and index that can be found in daily phenomenon of human environment. The symbols represent the communication between culture and society is very interesting to investigate as the semiotic analysis. This study was conducted to discover non-verbal symbolic mode in Kebo-keboan ceremony in Dusun Krajan Kabupaten Banyuwangi and mythology which is influenced that symbols.   This study uses qualitative approach focused on the phenomena being studied. Content analysis as the type of the research because it analyzed the data obtained from the observation of  Kebo-keboan  ceremony 2013 and in-depth interview with some people who know well about the ritual ceremony, such as the Culture Expert of Banyuwangi to get some data based on the research problem.  There are three classifications of non-verbal symbol found in Kebo-keboan ceremony. Those are physical objects (subjects or actors of  Kebo-keboan ceremony and supporting equipment), behaviors (the action and the movement of the parade of  Kebo-keboan  in  Ider  Bumi); and setting (time, location, atmosphere). Moreover the interpretation of symbol found in  Kebo-keboan ceremony can be conducted in denotation and connotation theory by Roland Barthes. The mythologies in Dusun Krajan also influenced the interpretation of non-verbal symbolic mode in Kebo-keboan ceremony.   The suggestion for the next study is to have a good time management during research field to get the deep information. Furthermore, the next study better to conduct both verbal and non-verbal symbolic mode of myth to get the whole meaning of Kebo-keboan ceremony
EXPRESSIVE ACTS IN BARRACK OBAMA’S PRESIDENTIAL SPEECH IN UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA
Keywords: speech, speech acts, expressive acts Human have their own ways to express their feelings. One of the mediumto express emotion is language. Expressing emotion through language also can be performed when a person has a speech. It can be analyzed through one of speech acts theories, that is expressive act theory. Expressive act is psychological state of the speaker. It can be statements of thanking, pardoning, apologizing, welcoming, praising, etc. The researcher conducted a research about expressive act in Barrack Obama’s presidential speech in Jakarta, November, 10th 2010. There are two problems to be solved, namely: (1) what expressive acts are found in Barrack Obama’s presidential speech, and (2) what the strategies are used by Barrack Obama in uttering expressive acts.This research used qualitative approach because the analysis is in the form of description rather than number. Then, the research was conducted through documentary analysis since the researcher analyzed Obama’s utterances in his transcript speech containing expressive acts. The result of the research shows that there are six types of expressive acts used by Obama in his speech, namely (1) thanking, (2) greeting, (3) happiness, (4) sadness, (5) condolence, and (6) wishes. There are also five strategies used by Obama in performing those acts. Those were literal direct act, non literal direct act, literal indirect act, literal direct act + non literal direct act, and literal direct act + non literal indirect act. After discussing all of the data, it is concluded that the type of expressive act used more often in this speech is happiness. Since, the emotion that madeObama happy with the situation of his come back to Indonesia as a President ofUSA, so that he showed his happiness repeatedly. Based on the result of the study, the writer wants to give suggestions for the next researchers who are interested in the same field to conduct a research about expressive act in daily conversations. Since, by conducting a research in daily conversations, we can extend the theory of expressive act because daily conversations contain more complex utterances than formal speech. Moreover, the researcher hopes that this thesis can help to give a little vision or as a reference about expressive act
REPRESENTATION OF WOMAN’S WISDOM IN ROBERT HERRICK’S POEM: THE LILY IN A CRYSTAL
Keywords: poem, significance, sign, semiotics, superreader As a literary discourse, the conveyance context of a poem meanings and significances are mostly delivered implicitly by the poet. In a poem, implicitsignificance may contain double meanings that require deep understanding andfurther readings. Sometimes, implicit significance is conveyed by certain symbols. The selected approach to interpret this poem is semiotics theory by Michael Riffaterre. The focus of this research is finding the analysis result of a poem titled The Lily in a Crystal by using superreader semiotics approach that emphasizes on the reader’s ability to dissect particular poem.This poem, written by Robert Herrick, became one of the poems with the highest number of stanza in his book titled Hesperides. This poem contains the image of woman’s life. However, Robert Herrick illustrated it in unique connotations. The core message delivered in this poem is a wisdom. Problem of the study to be answered in this research is: what is the hidden message inside Robert Herrick’s poem entitled The Lily in a Crystal.In the superreader theory, there are three elements that must be answered inorder to interpret a poem, those are semiotics reading (heuristic and hermeneutic), the matrix, model, and variants, as well as hypogram. The result of this semiotics analysis based on Riffaterre shows the religious representation that is hidden in each word, which is the essence of this poem. The connotation words are dedicated to woman and her actions. A wisdom is the main thing to face love that contains pleasure with sadness at once and lot of temptations within. This poem is indirectly invites all woman who reads, because the word‘you’ in this poem is aimed for the position of a woman. The Matrix in this poem are wisdom and religiosity. From those matrix, it can be found that the main theme of this poem is about religiosity that deals with woman’s wisdom
POLITENESS STRATEGIES IN “INDONESIAN STAND UP COMEDY SEASON I†PERFORMED BY THE WINNER
Keywords: Politeness, Face, FTA (face threathening acts) People in the world cannot live without interaction and communication with someone else because they belong to social community. One of strategy which is used in communication is politeness. This study is about politeness strategy. The meaning of politeness in this study is the act of people to please someone’s feeling or minimize the face threatening acts (FTA). It is important for people to know various standards of politeness as a way to have better communication with other people. Object of the study is Indonesian Stand Up Comedy Season I. Two problems of the study are formulated as follows: (1) What FTA strategies are performed by Ryan in “Indonesian Stand Up Comedy I Season I†? and (2) What politeness strategies are used by Ryan in “Indonesian Stand Up Comedy I Season I†?This research uses qualitative approach. The data source is the transcript of Ryan’s utterances in “Indonesian Stand Up Comedy Season Iâ€. In this research,the researcher used document analysis because the data which are analyzed are the utterances containing of FTA and politeness strategies in “Indonesian Stand Up Comedy Season Iâ€.The writer found that Ryan applies FTA strategies containing on record and off record with baldly on record is the most used.In performing FTA, the speaker intended to use strategies which can make audiences laugh. It means that the baldly on-record strategy is the most effective strategy to make a joke andmake audience laugh rather than another strategy.The writer suggests to the next researchers to use the other objects which reflect more about the appliance of FTA in daily life to make the readers more understand the concept of performing FTA in real life, especially in analyzing how another stand up comedian apply politeness strategies. The next researchers can compare the result of their analysis to know whether baldly on-record strategy is the most effective way to make jokes and make audiences laugh or not
SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF MCDONALD’S PRINTED ADVERTISEMENT
Keywords: Semiotic, printed advertisement, sign, icon, symbol, index, connotation, myth Printed advertisement has a promotional function as medium to advertise aproduct. It implicitly persuades people to create demand of product which is being advertised. In this study, the writer uses printed advertisement of McDonald’s fast food company as the object. The printed advertisement was analyzed by usingSemiotics study. There are seven printed advertisements that were analyzes in this study. All of the printed advertisements taken were under different themes ofpromotions. The themes are promotions on Opened New Store, Birthday Party, McBreakfast, Coffee, French Fries, Burger and Milkshake. There are threequestions to be answered: (1) What are the semiotic signs found in McDonald’sprinted advertisements?; (2) What are the connotations found in McDonald’s printed advertisements?; (3) What kind of mythical significationcould be interpreted in McDonald’s logo?.This study uses qualitative approach by document analysis because the study focuses on identifying sign, interpreting connotation and interpreting mythfound in McDonald’s printed advertisements. The writer collected the data bylooking at the verbal and visual sign contained within the McDonald’s printedadvertisements. In analyzing the data, the writer applied Peirce’s typology of signtheory and also Barthes’ connotation and myth theories.The writer found that there were 66 signs in total consisting of 30 icons, 14 indexes and 22 symbols. Most of the connotation meanings of the printedadvertisements reflect a certain messages related to the theme or product that is promoted. Each sign has a very important role to build up expected additional ideaof the advertisement. It has function to make clear, support and strengthen up aparticular message. The logo of McDonald’s is considered to have strongest mythical signification because it always appears on all of McDonald’s advertisements. Moreover, by the time goes on the yellow colored capital letter“M†contains the myth of American culture way of life in terms of eating anddaily habits which lead Americans to be quick in anything.The writer suggests that the next researchers conduct a study on semiotics by using another form of advertisement. The next researchers are also suggested that they use some other theories to gain better understanding about semiotics
JARGON ANALYSIS AMONG CADET IN LATIHAN INTEGRASI TARUNA WREDA NUSANTARA XXXIII
Keywords: language, community, cadet, military, jargon, word formation processes.  In language development, there are characteristics used by people in their communities, groups, or environment. A community has specific terms which isnot recognized by outsider. The terms are called jargon. One of communitiesusing jargon is military community. In this case, the writer analysed the jargonused by the cadets during Latihan Integrasi Taruna Wreda Nusantara XXXIIIalong with its word formation processes.  In this study, a qualitative approach is applied to analyze the jargon used by cadets in Latihan Integrasi Taruna Wreda XXXIII. The writer observes the data with theory proposed by Akmajian (2001) about jargon and theory of word of formation processes by Yule (2006). The instrument of this study is the writer's own interview guideline. The subjects of this study are last year cadets Latihan Integrasi Taruna Wreda Nusantara XXXIII.  Based on the result, the writer found 31 jargons used by cadets. The form of the jargons were five (5) coinage, three (3) borrowing, nine (9) compounding, four (4) blending, one (1) acronym, three (3), six (6) multiple processes. The most form of the word formation processes of jargon used by cadets in Latihan Integrasi Taruna Wreda Nusantara XXXIII is compounding. It can be concluded that the invention of jargon is affected by the background of the cadets’ activities both inside and outside the classroom. The writer suggests the students of English Literature to investigate communities in any locations to find differences jargon and its use. He suggests the students who are interested in Sociolinguistics study to apply other theories and methods. He also expects further researchers to associate with jargon, register, slang, and argot
A STUDY ON GRAMMATICAL AND LEXICAL COHESION IN ALBUM "ACOUSTIC" BY JUSTIN BIEBER
Keywords: Grammatical Cohesion, lexical Cohesion, album "Acoustic"The study of language in use is based on authentic data and that data consist primarily of texts. The word 'text' is used in a variety according to whatever it is that the writer wishes to make an implicit contrast with: sentence, discourse, context and lyric of song. A text refers to a unit of language in use for communication in the towns any passage, spoken or written, of whatever length and whatever style and genre that farms a unified whole. Based on the background of the study the researcher wanted to know the types of the cohesion devices which are mostly used in album "Acoustic" by Justin Bieber. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method and document analysis because the data have been obtained from written document that is song lyrics.The researcher started to analysis the data firstly by identification and classification of cohesion devices in the lyrics then counted it into the frequency of occurrences to find the types of cohesion devices which are mostly used. Secondly, analyzing each type of cohesion devices with their function found in analysis then drawing the conclusion.In conclusion, the researcher some found that the kinds of grammatical cohesion used in album 'Acoustic" by Justin Bieber, such as reference and conjunction. Then, the researcher also found that the kinds of lexical cohesion used in album "Acoustic" by Justin Bieber is reiteration
