POLITENESS STRATEGIES PERFORMED BY LECTURERS IN PROPOSAL SEMINARS IN ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM FACULTY OF CULTURAL STUDIES AT UNIVERSITAS BRAWIJAYA

There are two problems to be solved; (1) What are FTA strategies commonly performed by lecturers in proposal seminars in English Study Program Faculty of Cultural Studies at Universitas Brawijaya, (2) What politeness are commonly performed by lecturers in proposal seminars in English Study Program Faculty of Cultural Studies at Universitas Brawijaya.This study is categorized as a case study using qualitative approach since itwas made of a group of individuals consisting of English Study Program lecturers. To get the data, the writer observed proposal seminars activities at Universitas Brawijaya.This study reveals that there were 70 utterances containing FTA strategiesperformed by lecturers of English study program. There were 31 Face Threatening Acts (FTAs) performed in baldly on-record strategy, 21 performed in negative politeness strategy which consists of 20 use hedge expression and 1 be pessimistic strategy, 9 performed in positive politeness strategy which consists of 4 noticing hearer’s interests, 2 seek agreement, 1 be optimistic, 1 congratulating, and 1 asserting speaker’s knowledge of and concern for hearer’s wants, and 9 performed in off record strategy. The subject of this study performed 4 type of FTA strategies based on Brown and Levinson (1987), they were bald-on record strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record strategy. Most lecturers tend to use bald-on record strategy in which they show and express their opinions and suggestions directly and clearly, so that the hearer, in this case is the students, can get the point easily.The researcher suggests the next researchers to conduct studies by obtainingdata from different contexts and situations, such as in result seminar. Theresearcher also suggests the next researcher to use more theories in analysing the data, especially in analysing how another subject of the study in deifferent ages, relationships, or status can applied politeness in daily life

Those rules control women so they can be ideal ones, based on had their freedom, but women’s subservience to the society’s rules is not easy to be erased. They will follow the society’s expectations consciously or not. This phenomenon has happened since a long ago. For the analysis, the writer uses a novel entitle A Little Princess by Frances Hudgson Burnett as the object of analysis. This novel tells the reader about the efforts of young girl named Sara Crew to fulfill the standards of 19th century ideal women in Britain. Therefore, the writer makes a problem of the study, of the thesis is how Sara as the main character in A Little Princess manifests the standards of ideal woman in 19th century in Britain.The study uses qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomena being studied. Descriptive study in textual analysis is applied in this study to analyze the relation between the statements of Sara Crew in the novel and the ideal women standards she wants to reach.The result of this study shows the efforts of Sara Crew as the main character in fulfilling the standards of 19th century ideal women had created her on ideal women in the society. She successfully fulfills those standards in every condition. Those standards control women to be piety, patient, frugal, and industry.The writer suggests English Department students to analyze the 19th century standards of ideal women in Britain by using different object. The nextresearcher can also find an object which has different theme from this analysis

A STUDY OF IDIOMS USED IN NOVEL BEAUTIFUL CREATURES

There are three problems of the study: (1) the classifications of idioms used in novel Beautiful Creatures, (2) the meaning of the dialogues containing idioms found in novel Beautiful Creatures, and (3) the function of idioms used in novel Beautiful Creatures. This study uses qualitative approach with content or document analysis because it focuses on analyzing the idioms used by the main character of BeautifulCreatures. This study applies the theory of Seidl and McMordie (1988) in term ofclassification and the meaning of idioms, and the theory of McCarthy and O’Dell(2010) for the functions of idiom.This study reveals nine types of idioms stated by the main character of Beautiful Creatures. The writer found 31 (thirty one) keywords with idiomaticuses; 5 (five) idioms with nouns and adjectives; 5 (five) idiomatic pairs; 2 (two)idioms with preposition; 7 (seven) phrasal verbs; 4 (four) verbal idiom; 2 (two)idioms for special subjects; 3 (three) idioms containing special keywords; and 8(eight) idioms as comparison. The meanings of idioms that had been found varies and they depend on the context. The functions of idiom that were found are: to emphasize a statement of certain condition; to comment on people; to comment on situation; to make and anecdote more interesting; and to catch the reader’s eye.The writer hopes the next writers can use the findings of the research as anadditional reference and expects that this research can make them understandmore about idioms in semantics. AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH TABOO WORDS USED BY 9GAG.COM USERS IN JANUARY 2013

Taboo describes something prohibited, forbidden or interdiction things because it is not proper with the religion and custom in the society. Taboo words are prohibited to be uttered because they are improper and viewed as bad and rude language. Nowadays, social media is one of the media where people mostly produce taboo words, and the example is 9gag.com. This website is an image-based social media website which centers on user-uploaded pictures, even if the jokes that were posted on 9gag.com came from various backgrounds, but all 9gag.com users use and understand internet memes, the typical comical sign that is used in 9gag. The posts in 9gag.com are comical stories and funny pictures that usually come up with the memes.This research only focused on the type and the purpose of English taboo words used by 9gag.com users in January 1 to 31, 2013. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of English taboo words and the purposes of using taboo words by 9gag.com users from 1 to 31 January 2013. In this study the writer used qualitative approach because the data of this research are in the form of word rather than number.In analyzing the type of English taboo words in 9gag.com, the writer used the theory of Wardhaugh (1986). In analyzing the purpose of using taboo words, the writer used the theory of Liedlich (1973). The writer found 22 taboo words used by 9gag.com users in January 2013. They mostly used taboo words certain game animal, such as; „bitch please‟ and „bull shit‟. The writer also found many purposes of English taboo words used by 9gag.com users, such as; discredit, provoke violent confrontation and the common one was to create attention.The writer suggests that the next linguistics students conduct a research on taboo words not only in jokes and violence but might also be in other conditions, because most of taboo word theses were taking the object in movies, social media, and some regions. He also suggests the next researcher use different theories and methods if they want to conduct similar research. The writer also suggests the 9gag.com users consider their language before posting pictures and be wise in judging the value of the site especially in the language used.The writer also hopes that next linguistic student conduct a research on taboo words in other objects

This study aims to show the women movement in the early twentieth century in France which is done by a woman named Gabrielle Chanel.This study uses feminism theory to know the women movement breaking down the patriarchy system in society and struggling their right in order to get the same right to men. Materialist feminism by Rosemary Hennessy and Chrys Ingraham is used as the main theory. It states that women are free to choose their life and career to get their right. This theory is the appropriate theory to analyze the struggle of women to choose their career and life among the society. In addition to it, cinematography theory by Blain Brown is also applied to support the analysis of the visual image.This study reveals the women movement in the early twentieth century in France which is done by a woman named Gabrielle Chanel, a founder Chanel Company. Gabrielle Chanel has successed to break the patriarchy system. Her action to do the men’s activities such as horseracing and to become career women are her brave movements to break down the patriarchy system. Another women movement is shown by her brave life choice to exploit another people and todecide to be unmarried. So, it is clear by the study that the struggle of womenmovement in the early twentiethh century in France is succesfully done byGabrielle Chanel which is potrayed in this movie. Sintaksis membahas seperti frasa, klausa serta kalimat.  Analisis dalam penelitian ini menggunakan keterangan waktu jiù（就）,cái (æ‰), gÄng gÄng （刚刚）, tÅ« rán （çªç„¶ï¼‰, yÇ jing（已 ç» ï¼‰Â yang diterapkan dalam karangan dengan tema perjalanan. Pada umumnya, kesalahan yang terjadi adalah kesalahan penggunaan keterangan waktu yang tidak tepat. Hal ini disebabkan karena mahasiswa belum memahami akan penggunaan keterangan waktu tersebut yang pengertiannya hampir sama. Peneliti merasa tertarik untuk membahas keterangan waktu jiù（就）,cái (æ‰), gang gang （刚刚）, tÅ« rán （çªç„¶ï¼‰, yÇ jing（已ç»ï¼‰dan digunakan untuk menjawab rumusan serta tujuan masalah yaitu kesalahan penggunaan dan struktur dalam keterangan waktu tersebut.Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kuantitatif, analisis data berupa angka. Dari hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa mayoritas mahasiswa semester III dikategorikan dalam golongan sangat mampu.Peneliti menyarankan agar penelitian selanjutnya tetap menggunakan objek yaitu mahasiswa dengan konsep tata bahasa yang berbeda, sehingga penjelasan serta penelitian tentang tata bahasa lebih beragam
HISOKUONBIN VERBA YODAN ~RA DALAM KYÅŒGENKI SEIHEN

Pada linguistik historis bahasa Jepang, diketahui ada berbagai macam perubahan, salah satunya fenomena bentuk hionbin atau hionbinkei berubah menjadi bentuk onbin atau onbinkei, kecuali pada verba ~sa. Diketahui bahwa pada zaman Muromachi, cukup banyak onbinkei yang sudah melekat pada bahasa Jepang waktu itu. Di antara ke-empat jenis onbinkei yang ada, yang menjadi objek penelitian kali ini adalah sokuonbinkei dan hisokuonbinkei. Yang dinamakan dengan sokuonbinkei adalah bentuk verba ~ha, ~ta, dan ~ra ketika mengambil bentuk renyÅ, sedangkan hisokuonbinkei adalah bukan (non) sokuonbinkei. Sumber data yang akan digunakan adalah KyÅgenki Seihen yang menurut SatÅ (1995:31) adalah salah satu sumber data zaman Muromachi yang diakui bahasanya sebagai bahasa lisan zaman ChÅ«sei atau pertengahan daerah KyÅto dan ÅŒsaka.Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk membuktikan teori yang ada mengenai onbin dan hionbin, khususnya sokuonbin verba ~ra. Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah: (1) Berapa perbandingan verba ~ra yang mengambil bentuk sokuonbin dan hisokuonbin dalam KyÅgenki Seihen? (2) Apa saja verba ~ra yang mengambil bentuk hisokuonbin dan berapa kali muncul dalam KyÅgenki Seihen? (3) Apakah ada suatu kecenderungan jumlah hisokuonbin verba ~ra jika dipisahkan berdasarkan judul naskah KyÅgenki Seihen?Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menganalisa data yang didukung dengan data numerik. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode observasi atau pengamatan, juga teknik catat atau taking note method. Penulis menganalisa data yang didapat dengan pertama-tama, menemukan verba ~ra yang telah menjadi bentuk renyÅ, melakukan tabelisasi, dan memeriksakan hasil temuan kepada dosen yang membimbing. Untuk mendapatkan persentase rumusan masalah pertama, penulis menggunakan rumus P=f/N x 100%, dengan P: persentase, f: frekuensi data, dan N: jumlah sampel yang diolah, sedangkan untuk rumusan masalah kedua dan ketiga, penulis menghitung langsung dari tabel yang telah dibuat.Berdasarkan hasil temuan, dalam KyÅgenki Seihen terdapat total renyÅ verba ~ra sebanyak 476 data 109 kata. Yang mengambil bentuk sokuonbin ada sebanyak 431 data 87 kata, dan sisanya, 45 data 22 kata, mengambil bentuk hisokuonbin. Verba ~ra yang paling banyak muncul dalam hisokuonbin adalah mairu (å‚ã‚‹) dengan total 15 kali. Lalu, jika dipisahkan berdasarkan naskah, tidak ditemukan kecenderungan jumlah hisokuonbin, tetapi jika dilihat berdasarkan jilid, maka bisa dilihat ada kecenderungan jumlah hisokuonbin pada jilid pertama
APOLOGY STRATEGIES PERFORMED BY MAIN CHARACTERS IN PERAHU KERTAS NOVEL

The writer conducted a research on apology strategies in Bahasa Indonesia, by analyzing a novel entitled Perahu Kertas. In this study, there are two problems to be solved: (1) What apology strategies are performed by main characters in Perahu Kertas novel, and (2) How is the act of apologizing upgraded by main characters in Perahu Kertas novel.This study used qualitative approach because the analysis is in the form of description rather than number. Then, this research is categorized as document analysis because the writer analyzed the novel entitled Perahu Kertas.The result of this study shows that apology strategies are divided into two main groups that are direct and indirect strategy. Direct strategy is represented into 11 strategies: minimizing the offense, explicit apology, explicit apology followed by explanation, explicit explanation followed by minimizing the offense, recantation, regret, request for forgiveness, concern for hearer, being honest, hiding something and cancellation. Indirect strategy is represented into 4 strategies: attacking the complainer, blaming someone else, implicit apology and implicit apology followed by explanation. Besides, this study suggests that the act of apologizing can be upgraded directly and indirectly. Direct strategy is represented into 5 strategies: explanation, reiteration, lexical intensification, supplication, and promise. Indirect strategy is represented into 2 strategies: explanation and confirmation.The writer suggests that future researchers use more objects in Bahasa Indonesia in order to complete the taxonomy of apology strategy in it. The writer also suggests that Study Program of English at Universitas Brawijaya add more references related to this topic so that future researchers could present rich literature review that is able to support the analysis of their study
WAKAMONO KOTOBA DALAM KOMIK ORESAMA TEACHER VOL.1 KARYA TSUBAKI IZUMI
Get PDFKata Kunci: Wakamono Kotoba, Komik, Morfologi. Wakamono kotoba adalah bahasa yang dipakai oleh anak muda Jepang dalam lingkungannya. Dengan adanya kata-kata baru yang merupakan bentukan dari wakamono kotoba, maka dengan membaginya kedalam pembagian jenis kata akan lebih memudahkan untuk memahami wakamono kotoba. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui, (1) termasuk dalam jenis kata apakah wakamono kotoba yang terdapat dalam komik Oresama Teacher Vol. 1 (2) bagaimana proses pembentukan wakamono kotoba yang terdapat dalam komik Oresama Teacher Vol.1.Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Data yang diteliti adalah komik Oresama Teacher vol. 1 yang berisi tentang wakamono kotoba. Analisa dilakukan dengan mengidentifikasi kosakata wakamono kotoba, tabulasi sesuai dengan pembagian jenis kata dan deskripsi hasil.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) dari 37 wakamono kotoba yang berhasil ditemukan, wakamono kotoba yang terdiri atas doushi sebanyak 7 kata, keiyoushi sebanyak 6 kata, keiyoudoushi sebanyak 1 kata, meishi sebanyak 14 kata, fukushi sebanyak 4 kata, kandoushi sebanyak 3 kata dan setsuzokushi sebanyak 2 kata. (2) Dalam wakamono kotoba yang sudah ditemukan, diketahui bahwa wakamono kotoba tersebut mengalami pemendekan, (3) perubahan bunyi pada akhir kata, (4) wakamono kotoba yang mengalami pergeseran makna.Untuk penelitian selanjutnya, penulis menyarankan untuk menggunakan media selain komik sebagai misalnya penutur asli Jepang agar wakamono kotoba yang diteliti lebih sesuai dengan perkembangan wakamono kotoba saat ini
