The Use of Visual Supports to Overcome The Learning Difficulties Faced by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Sufferers in Autism UM Laboratory School (A Case Study of Three ASD Students)

Supervisor:Fatimah; Co-supervisor: Didik Hartono  Keywords:  Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Learning Difficulties,  Visual Supports.   According to the Centers for Disease Control Prevention in 2013, Autism Spectrum Disorder now affects 1 in every 110 children in the world and the number of people who affected to autism are increasing at the rate of 10 to 17 percent per year. All people with autism have difficulties with social interaction and behavior, but the extent and type of difficult may vary.  It is obvious that actually with the impairments which exist in autism children, it will affect their learning process also. Therefore, becoming aware of the warning signs of learning difficulties faced by autism children and getting autism children the necessary help early can become the key to an autism child’s future.The writer focuses on the learning  difficulties which are faced by Autistic students in case of retaining the information  from the teachers and also focuses on the visual supports which are used by the teachers in Autism UM Laboratory School. This study used qualitative approach. The subjects being investigated were three autism  students on fifth grade at Autism UM Laboratory School. The data were obtained from observation in the VA Class and in the participants’ house in order to know kinds of learning difficulties based on Attwood’s theory in 1998, In answering the second problems of the study,  the writer also interviewed parents and the teachers of autism students in order to know the visual supports that they used to overcome the learning difficulties based on Hodgdon and Quill theory  in 1995.   The result reveals that there are  learning difficulties faced by  the  autism students such as tendency to make irrelevant comments, difficulty in understanding complex language, poor concentration, poor in organizational skills, easily stressed due to inflexibility, and also having  difficulty in Mathematic. Meanwhile, the visual supports which are used  are  real objects, photographs, visual schedules, visual task analysis, and also visual to structure their environment. The writer suggests the school establish positive relationships between the parents  and  teachers  who  are believed  to improve parental involvement and increase parents’ comfort level in working with the school. For  the next researchers,  they can  compare the learning difficulties of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with other disorders  and correlate with the achievement of the students
AN ANALYSIS OF COMPUTER-MEDIATED COMMUNICATION FOUND IN FACEBOOK STATUS

Supervisor: Endang Sasanti; Co-Supervisor: Ida Puji Lestari  Keywords: Computer  –  Mediated Communication, Oral and written language, facebook status.  Language is a major element in a human society, especially for communication. There are two forms of how a language is produced, namely oral (spoken) and written forms. Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) is a kind of communication  by computer  today which have both oral and written forms. Facebook is a popular social networking sites which can be included into one of CMC  types. The writer conducted a research about language phenomenon  found in facebook status to see how the written theory has changed with the coming of CMC. There are two problems to be solved the study, those are : (1) What the characteristics of Computer-Mediated Communication which are used by facebook users, and (2) What the factors influencing facebook status which have the characteristics of Computer-Mediated Communication.  This study uses the Paolillo’s theory (2001) about characteristics of CMC.  Those  are  orthography, vocabulary, grammar, discourse text, and paralinguistic graphic. This study uses qualitative approach especially document or textual analysis because it analyzes the sentences in facebook status. The researcher has 103 facebook status which have characteristics of CMC. The characteristics found in facebook status are orthography, vocabulary, grammar, discourse text, and paralinguistic graphic. Sometimes,  a facebook status has more than a characteristic of CMC. But, the characteristic mostly found in facebook status is paralinguistic graphic with the total of  92  status, followed by 45 status of grammar characteristic. The next one is 36 status of orthography, followed by discourse text with the total of 19 status. The last characteristic is vocabulary. It has 17 status.  From 103 facebook status,  there is just  one  status which  has not characteristic of CMC and it is  standard of written language. Actually, there are some factors  why people use the characteristics  of CMC, but in this research, there are gender and age factors which can be clearly seen in  facebook. As the conclusion, characteristics of CMC really exist in the social media, especially in facebook status. People are free to write everything they want in social media without thinking about the formality or standardization of the language. The researcher suggests to the next researchers to find out other language phenomena because those are interesting topic for the readers. For the example is Bahasa alay  phenomenon. It is confusing for some people. They can ask the participants about the meaning of the sentences in Bahasa alay. She also suggests to discuss other social media, like twitter, blog, blackberry messenger, and so on. In addition, it is also expected that the next researchers  use more  various approaches to analyze the data
KEDUDUKAN HAKEN DI PERUSAHAAN JEPANG YANG TERCERMIN DALAM DRAMA HAKEN NO HINKAKU KARYA SUTRADARA NAGUMO SEIICHI DAN SATO TOYA

Salah satu bentuk karya sastra adalah drama. Penelitian ini menggunakan drama  Haken no Hinkaku  yang menceritakan tentang  haken  di perusahaan Jepang. Haken  adalah pekerja yang dikirim dikirim ke perusahaan-perusahaan besar melalui lembaga penempatan sementara (haken gaisya). Rumusan masalah yang akan dibahas dalam penelitian ini adalah: bagaimana kedudukan  haken  di dalam perusahaan Jepang yang tercermin dalam drama Haken no Hinkaku karya sutradara Nagumo Seiichi dan Sato Toya. Penulis menggunakan teori sosiologi sastra milik Nyoman Kutha Ratna yakni pendekatan yang menitikberatkan pada sastra sebagai refleksi kehidupan untuk menggambarkan kedudukan haken di perusahaan Jepang. Selain itu untuk melihat faktor apa yang mempengaruhi kedudukan haken di perusahaan Jepang. Hasil penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa drama Haken no Hinkaku  sebagian besar telah menggambarkan kedudukan  haken  di perusahaan Jepang yang sebenarnya. Faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kedudukan  haken  di perusahaan adalah tugas-tugas yang dikerjakan oleh haken di perusahaan, pandangan pegawai tetap terhadap  haken  di perusahaan dan kesadaran  haken  akan posisinya di perusahaan. Dari tiga faktor tersebut telah diketahui bahwa kedudukan  haken  di perusahaan tidak lebih tinggi atau setara dengan pegawai tetap
FENOMENA OPERASI PLASTIK DI JEPANG DALAM SERIAL DRAMA CLEOPATRA NA ONNATACHI KARYA OOISHI SHIZUKA

Serial drama  Cleopatra na Onnatachi  menggambarkan sebuah fenomena dari dunia nyata yang melingkupi tempat karya sastra itu dibuat, yakni fenomena operasi plastik pada masyarakat Jepang. Oleh karena itu, penelitian mengenai Fenomena Operasi Plastik di Jepang dalam Serial Drama  Cleopatra Na Onnatachi  ini dilakukan.  Untuk menjawab rumusan masalah bagaimana bentuk fenomena operasi plastik di Jepang yang tergambar dalam serial drama  Cleopatra na Onnatachi.  Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi sastra. Sosiologi sastra adalah pendekatan terhadap sastra yang mempertimbangkan segi-segi kemasyarakatan. Adapun beberapa unsur dari teori mise-en-scene yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini, yaitu acting, setting, lighting dan costum.  Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan dalam serial drama ini terdapat 4 jenis operasi plastik yang  populer di Jepang yaitu operasi perbaikan hidung (rhinoplasty), pelebaran kelopak mata (blepharoplasty), sedot lemak (liposuction) dan implan payudara (breast implant). Motif melakukan operasi plastik adalah kurangnya rasa percaya diri, adanya persaingan untuk tampil sempurna, dan adanya definisi kecantikan modern yang tinggi.  Dalam penelitian berikutnya diharapkan ada penelitian seperti rentang usia dan gender pelaku operasi plastik, dampak negatif operasi plastik  atau pengaruh operasi plastik pada gaya hidup masyarakat Jepang. Objek kajian selain drama juga dapat dilakukan
A SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS ON THE HELP MOVIE POSTERS

Movie posters normally contain many kinds of verbal and visual signs.The images with text that appear in the movie poster inform the viewer aboutwhat approximately happened along the story. It reflects the main idea of the story in the movie. In this research, the researcher used verbal and visual signs found in movie posters from racism theme movie entitled The Help as the main data. They consist of two The Help official movie posters which were launched byDreamWorks Studio and The Help reprint movie posters were designed by posterartists or graphic designers that versed in designing a movie poster. There arethree problems of the study that are answered in this research, they are: (1) What are the denotative signs found in The Help movie posters; (2) What are the connotative signs found in The Help movie posters; and (3) What are the myths built in The Help movie posters.Since the main data were taken from movie posters, qualitative researchwith content or document analysis was used in this research to describe thephenomena. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Barthes theory (1972) to build the meaning through denotation and connotation theory and how it is then bringing them into a myth that people believed as racism issues in The Help movie posters.The denotative signs found in this research are from the representation of visual and verbal elements in the posters such as the title, tagline, and the image of women, gestures, and facial expression, the image of bench, pigeon, ravens, cage, cartoon, and also colors. While connotation is used to build the meaning behind each of denotative signs found in the movie posters such as the way the citizens of America face the racism issues based on the skin color differences. The myth built in the movie posters consider White people as the best race between others is pictured in the fifth of The Help movie posters.Related to this study, the researcher suggests the next researcher to analyzeanother object like videos, movie or any motion picture. The use of differenttheories is also suggested for the next researcher to expand the knowledge about semiotic study
THE HEDGING OF MAXIMS BY DAVID BECKHAM IN GOOGLE+ INTERVIEW

In conversation, speakers sometimes use particular words or phrases to mitigate their statements and to indicate uncertainty in their utterances. The using of those particular words and phrases are known as hedging. In linguistics, the sub field studying contextual meaning in conversation and hedging is pragmatics. This study aims to answer two problems, which are (1) to find out the types of the hedging of maxims used by David Beckham in Google+ Interview and (2) to find out the contexts that cause the occurance of the hedging of maxims applied by David Beckham in Google+ Interview.This research is a descriptive qualitative because this research focuses ondescribing the data about what types of hedging maxim produced by DavidBeckham in Google+ interview held in January 2012. The writer also analyzes thecontexts of using hedging maxim found in David Beckham’s utterances. In thisresearch, the writer uses Hymes’s SPEAKING theory (1974) to analyze the data.This research reveals that David Beckham hedged maxim of quality, maxim of quantity and maxim of manner in his utterances. The writer found 37 utterances which consist of the hedging of maxims. There are 31 hedging maxim of quality, 5 hedging maxim of quantity and 1 hedging maxim of manner. The SPEAKING features theory is used by the writer to help analyze the contexts that cause the occurance of the hedging of maxims by David Beckham in Google+ Interview.The writer suggests that the next researcher analyze different objects from this research and also use different theories of the hedging of maxims from the ones used in this research
AMERICAN VALUES PORTRAYED ON JAMES J. BRADDOCK AS THE MAIN CHARACTER OF CINDERELLA MAN MOVIE
Keywords: American values, Cinderella Man movie The history of American values cannot be separated from the history of America. American values are the representation of the main reason why many immigrants come to this Uncle Sam country. They believe that they can achieve their dream in America. They think that in America everyone can pursue their dream because in this land all men are created equal. Like one of the embodiment of human rights stated in the Declaration of Independence “all men are created equal†is the famous notion for all Americans to be successful and have a better life. There are six basic of American values, three represent reasons why immigrants were drawn to America: the chance for individual, equality of opportunity and material wealth. In order to achieve this benefit, however there were prices to be paid: self-reliance, competition and hard work.In this thesis, the writer will also use historical background to support andremind again the occurrences and effects of great depression era, because the setting of the movie took on that era.The finding shows that the main character of Cinderella Man movie, James J.Braddock represents American values. The writer suggest for the next researcher to analyse this movie using Marxist theory about the class system in America. The next researcher can use this theory to reveal the economy class changing in the main character of the movie, James J. Braddock. Besides, the next researcher can also by seeing it from the relationship between bourgeoisie and proletariat
THE ANALYSIS OF SEMIOTIC SIGNS APPEARING ON A MILD “BUKAN BASA BASI†BILLBOARD CIGARETTE ADVERTISEMENT
Keywords: Semiotics, Piercean Model, Icons, Indexes, Symbols, and A Mild cigarette advertisement Advertisement is media to deliver messages to people with the goal toinfluence them to use certain products. In this study, semiotic approach is employed to investigate the signs, symbols, icons, and indexes in A Mild “Bukan Basa Basi†billboard advertisements. This study aims at identifying (1) the semiotic signs that are used in the A Mild “Bukan Basa Basi†cigarette advertisements, and (2) the interpretation of semiotic signs in the A Mild “Bukan Basa Basi†cigarette advertisements.This study used qualitative approach in the form of document analysis. Thetheory employed this study is Piercean theory, which presents three sign modes,icon, index, and symbol. The data were two A Mild “Bukan Basa Basi†billboardadvertisements. The first advertisement of A Mild “Daripada Gak Dapet-dapetKerja, Mending Gak Dapet-dapet Gelar†version was published in mid 2009, andthe advertisement of A Mild “Yang Lebih Muda yang Gak Dipercaya†waspublished in the end of 2009 in Indonesia. The procedures to collect the data were downloading, observing, and listing the advertisements. Then, the writer classified the sign into icon, index, or symbol and interpreted the signs meanings appearing on the advertisements, then drew the conclusion after analyzing the data.The result of this research showed that each advertisement contains semioticsigns comprising symbol, icon, and index. The icons are found in the pictures of the billboard; the symbols are found in the logo and slogan; and the indexes are found in the expressions of characters. There are eight signs found in the first advertisement and six signs found in the second advertisement. The iconic mode appears the most in the two A Mild Bukan Basa Basi billboard cigaretteadvertisement. The interpretation of the semiotic signs is related to the theme of the advertisements.Suggestion is made for next researchers to choose the semiotic study toobtain various results. Next researchers may also conduct further studies byobserving people’s interpretation on certain advertisements
A STUDY ON IMPLICATURE IN CONDOM COMMERCIALS USING RELEVANCE THEORY
Keywords: Condom Commercials, Relevance, Explicature, Higher-level Explicature, Implicature Condom commercials broadcasted in Indonesian television have uniqueness in delivering the messages. This phenomenon has encouraged the writer to analyze the implicature used in condom commercials. Pragmatic approach especially the theory of relevance is applied in this study. This study aims at analyzing the implicature used in condom commercials using relevance theory derived from explicature, higher level explicature, and implicature.The data source of this study was condom commercials broadcasted in Indonesian television. There were 13 data taken from 5 Sutra condom commercials, 7 Fiesta condom commercials, and 1 Durex condom commercial. The writer used qualitative approach with document analysis to analyze the relevance.This study revealed that in uncovering the implicature used in condom commercials, three stage processes were done. Explicature is used to give detailed explanation about the utterances uttered by the speakers helped by the context. In this study, the explicating process was derived via reference assignment and bridging. Deriving higher-level explicature is needed to find the propositional attitude toward the speakers’ utterances by analyzing non-linguistic aspects where in this study tone voice is used by the speakers. Deriving the implicature requires the viewers’ knowledge and the most suitable context which are represented in implicit premises that are constructed based on the context and implicated conclusion obtained by drawing conclusion from the whole process. It can be inferred that the implicit meaning coming from condom commercials are about introducing the products with their characteristics or specialties which differ from other competitors. The message about the importance of using condom before having sexual activities are also delivered by the advertisers. It is concluded that explicature, higher-level explicature, and implicature are interpreted by drawing inferences retrieved from the context, background knowledge, and assumptions.The next writers are recommended that they conduct similar studies aboutrelevance theory with different objects such as cigarette and birth pill controlcommercials broadcasted on television. The writer also suggests the televisionviewers understand deeply the message delivered in televsion commercials
THE STRUGGLE OF AMERICAN MINORITIES DURING GREAT DEPRESSION IN JOHN STEINBECK’S OF MICE AND MEN
Keywords: American minorities, struggle, Great Depression, MarxistNovella is one of fictions which the event happens in the story does not really happen in reality. But since it is a literary work, it may depict the real condition of an era. In the era of Great Depression, it is known that United States of America suffered from big economic crisis. In this study a novella entitled Of Mice and Men is chosen as the object of the study. This study is purposed to identify about how the struggle of America minorities during Great Depression.This study uses Marxist theory as the main tool of analyzing. In the process of the research, the theory of Marxist is correlated to the concept of minority also the concept of equality. The data is collected from the narration, characterization, and the dialogue of the characters. The procedure of analysis is started by collecting data, interpreting and analyzing related object of the study in the story, and drawing the conclusion.The result of the study shows about the struggle of American minorities during Great Depression. The struggle can be found by classifying the object of the study based on their factors of minority. There are five classes found in the research: the struggle of minority group in terms of (1) economic, (2) race, (3) age, (4) sex, and (5) disability. Basically, every group struggles to get equality based on their terms of minority, but the analysis shows that some groups intend to get equality of respect as their main aim
