SPEECH STRATEGIES PERFORMED BY STEVE JOBS IN THE LAUNCHING OF IPHONE 4
Keywords: Public Speaking, Speech, Persuasive Speech, Elements of PersuasiveSpeech, Speech Strategies, Steve Jobs, iPhone 4 Speech is one of many ways to deliver our messages.The researcher conducts a study about speech strategies that used by Steve Jobs in the Launching of iPhone 4.There are two problems to be solved in the study, namely: (1) What are the elements of persuasive speech to indicate Steve Jobs speech in launching iPhone 4 (2) What speech strategies are used by Steve Jobs in launching iPhone 4.This study uses qualitative approach since the data are in the form of words rather than number. In this study the data are the utterances from Steve Jobs as the CEO of Apple.Inc. The data are analyzed based on the theory of Public Speaking by Steven A. Beebe and Susan J. Beebe (2005).This study has found out that Steve Job appliedThe elements of persuasive speech in his Steve Jobs’ speech. Those elements are attitudes and beliefs. Some certain strategies are used in his speech when he launches iPhone 4 in 2010. Those strategies are Omission, Suspension, Rhetorical Question, and Repetition. The application of his strategies has purpose to attract the audience to buy his new product.The writer expected that the next researcher to be able to conduct a research with exploring more the elements of persuasive speech.Speechincludes in the body of communication, so we can explore about any kind of speech strategy and we should know what are the elements of speech that should to be fulfill when we want to make a memorable speech
BORROWING WORD IN SPORT RUBRIC OF â€JAWA POSâ€

By the interactions, people start to make a connection one to others in order to make something which is called as communication. There are many ways in communication. The writer conducts a study about borrowing word in “Jawa Pos Newspaper Sport Rubricâ€which presents some borrowng words. There are two problems to be solved, they are: (1)What part of speech borrowed in the sport rubric on Jawa Pos newspaper (2)What types of English borrowing words in the sport rubric on Jawa Pos newspaper. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach to gather and analyze the data. It isincluded into document analysis because the researcher interprets the wordson sport rubric of Jawa Pos newspaper to answer the research problem.The result of the study,there areone hundred fourty one (141) English borrowing words foundin sport rubric Jawa Pos newspaper. The result of part of speech found in English borrowing word sport rubric on Jawa Pos newspaper (one hundred sixteen) nouns, (four) verbs, (twenty one) adjectives. The researcher finds types of borrowing word (ninety six) simple words, (thirty) complex words, and (fifteen) translated words.This study is conducted to identify English borrowing word. Therefore, the writersuggests the readers especially those who want to conduct the similar study to analyze deeply about all English borrowing words. The writer also suggests the next researchers to use other objects from different newspapers or different rubric of newspaper. The writer hopes that this study will be very helpful for the readers and the next researchers
GRAMMATICAL AND LEXICAL COHESION IN “INDIA’S SUPREME COURT DECLARES HOMOSEXUAL SEX ILLEGAL†ARTICLE FROM EDITION.CNN.COM

Cohesion is the interconnection among sentences because of the formal factors or the internal factors in the language. The general function of cohesion is to make the discourse cohesive. One of the examples of discourse is an article. The article that is used in this study entitled “India’s Supreme Court Declares Homosexual Sex Illegal†by Harmeet Shah Singh and focus on homosexual sex. As we know, homosexual sex is a taboo and illegal, so that it is interesting to be discussed. The objectives of the study are to find out the grammatical and lexical cohesion devices in the article and to analyze the use of them in the article.The study uses qualitative approach. The data of the study are sentences of phrases which consist of grammatical and lexical cohesion in the article. The data source of this study is the article taken from cnn.com website in the edition column which was published on December 11th , 2013.The results of the study show that all kinds of grammatical cohesion can be found in the article, except substitution and verbal ellipsis. Reference is grammatical cohesion mostly use in the article, then followed by conjunction and ellipsis. In addition, all kinds of lexical cohesion can be found in the article, except synonym. The types of lexical cohesion are reiteration and collocation. Reiteration includes repetition, superordinate, and general words. Cohesion gives influences to the article and the article has fulfilled all those criteria from JS Badudu about language in journalism, namely brief, concise, simple, straight to the point, interesting, and clear.It can be concluded that the article is a cohesive one because it has texture in it because the writer uses the cohesion devices very well. It also consists of 5W+1H (what, where, who, when, and how). It is suggested that other researchers conduct further study about coherence because it is often related to cohesion.  Â
VERBAL IRONY AND FLOUTING MAXIMS IN BAD TEACHER MOVIE
Key Terms: Verbal Irony, Maxim, Flouting of Maxim, Implicature, Bad Teacher Movie. Movie is one of entertainment media which can reflect daily life, especially in terms of the conversation. This study discusses flouting maxims through verbal irony occur in Bad Teacher Movie. The problem of this study is what kinds of flouting maxim occur through verbal ironies uttered by the characters in Bad Teacher Movie and what are the implied meanings.This study used qualitative approach since the data were in the form of the transcript of Bad Teacher Movie. The writer collected the data by reading the transcript and found verbal ironies which flout the maxims. After that, the writer identified the kinds of maxim being flouted, analyzed them, and drew conclusion. In analysing the implied meanings of the ironical utterances, the writer consider the context occurs in the movie and interpret the implied meanings based on the context.The writer found that all of maxims are flouted by the characters through 21 verbal ironies. The most frequently flouted maxim is maxim of quality which is found in 21 utterances. The second are maxim of relation and maxim of manner which are found in 4 utterances for each maxim. The least is maxim of quantity which is found in 3 utterances. Also, there are 9 verbal ironies which flout more than one maxim. The flouting maxims occur mostly because the characters give false contribution in a conversation.The writer suggests that the next researchers relate some aspects of verbal irony or flouting maxims with other theories for example politeness theory. The next researchers are also suggested to conduct similar study in another different object such as novel, talk show, or radio show
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING VOCABULARY VIDEO TO IMPROVE THE VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THE FOUR GRADE STUDENTS OF SDN SUGIWARAS IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2014
Key words: the vocabulary mastery, the vocabulary video, the students, SDN 1Sugiwaras. The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of vocabulary video in teaching English vocabulary at fourth grade at SDN Sugiwaras Candi Sidoarjo. This technique can improve and increase student’s ability to learn the target language and make them enjoy teaching learning process. It supposes to motivate students to learn English actively by using vocabulary video. Students also are encouraged to get long memorizing of the words and their meaning.The method that is used in this study is the quasi experimental method by using t-test, to find out the significant difference between recent technique and vocabulary video technique through the score pre-test and post-test.The result of analysis in the study showed that teaching vocabulary by using vocabulary video is success. Using vocabulary video made process learning effective and made students motivated, so it can be used as an alternative method in teaching vocabulary based on the result of gained post-test students’ achievement at the Fourth Grade of SDN Sugiwaras Candi Sidoarjo year of 2014.The school should give wider opportunity for the teacher to use “Vocabulary Video†as medium on teaching English vocabulary. It is important because this study found significant difference between the mastery of English vocabulary of the fourth grade students of SDN Sugiwaras, Candi Sidoarjo in academic year of 2014 before and after being taught by using vocabulary video
FEAR AND ANXIETY EXPERIENCED BY THE CHARACTERS OF A DAVID FINCHER’S FILM TITLED PANIC ROOM
Keywords: Freud, real fear, neurotic fear, realistic anxiety, moral anxiety, neuroticanxiety, object.Humans are the most wonderful creatures who have ability to think much better than other creatures. They all have their own mindset that differentiates one and another. The illustration of various humans’ personality can be seen from film. It usually tells story about human’s life and behavior that can be analyzed. Panic Room, a thriller film by David Fincher involves a family which is threatened by unfamiliar people or strangers, in this case are the thieves. This study applies psychoanalysis as theory, because it explains about humans’ nature behavior. There are a lot of concerns in connection with psychoanalysis including fear and anxiety.Freud explains that there are two kinds of fear: neurotic fear and real fear; and three kinds of anxiety: neurotic, realistic, and moral anxiety. Even though fear and anxiety seem similar but they are actually different. In Panic Room, there are some events that indicate fear and anxiety. It also shows the reaction from the characters when they experience fear or anxiety. The reactions to fear shown by the characters are flight, defense, and attack. However, anxiety is usually followed by physical sensations, such as trembling or crying.The result of this study shows that even though the characters show that their fears are caused by the same object although they may show different reaction to it. The different reaction shown by the characters is influenced by the past experiences they have had earlier. The characters that experienced anxiety show different causes and reaction to their anxiety. The writer suggests the next researcher to analyze defense mechanism shown in Panic Room Film because it has close connection which anxiety studied in this thesis
SINGLE FATHER YANG TERCERMIN DALAM KEHIDUPAN SHINKAI GEN’ICHI PADA DRAMA OH, MY DAD!! KARYA SUTRADARA KONO KEITA
Kata Kunci  : Drama, Kehidupan, Masyarakat Jepang, Single Father Karya sastra menampilkan gambaran kehidupan yang terjadi di masyarakat. Salah satu bentuk karya sastra adalah drama. Penelitian ini menggunakan drama Oh, My Dad!!untuk mengetahui gambaran single father yang tercermin dalam kehidupan Shinkai Gen’ichi dan kemampuan single father dalam mengasuh dan mendidik anakpada drama Oh, My Dad!! karya sutradaraKono Keita. Berdasarkan alasan tersebut, rumusan masalah yang akan dibahasdalam penelitian ini adalah seperti apakah gambaran single father yang tercermin dalam kehidupan Shinkai Gen’ichi dan apakah Shinkai Gen’ichi mampu berperan sebagai single father dalam mengasuh dan mendidik anaknya pada drama Oh, My Dad!! karya sutradara Kono Keita.Penelitian ini menggunakan teori sosiologi sastra oleh Ian Watt (2003) sastra sebagai cerminan masyarakat untuk menggambarkan kehidupan single father pada masyarakat Jepang. Sedangkan metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Data yang dianalisis berupa gambar maupun kata-kata yang berkaitan dengan kehidupan Shinkai Gen’ichi sebagai single father. Selain iu,penulis juga menggunakan teori film mise en scene untuk menganalisis adegandalam drama Oh, My Dad!! yang menampilkan kehidupan single father.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa faktor penyebab tokoh Shinkai Gen’ichi menjadi single father adalah karena perpisahan dengan istri, terdapat 3 kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh tokoh Shinkai Gen’ichi dalam mengasuh danmendidik anak, yaitu kesulitan menyesuaikan diri sebagai single father, kesulitan memenuhi kebutuhan ekonomi, dan kesulitan membagi waktu antara bekerja dan mengasuh anak serta diketahui bahwa tokoh Shinkai Gen’ichi tidak mampu mengasuh dan mendidik anak karena dalam menjalani kehidupannya tokoh Shinkai Gen’ichi masih bergantung pada orang lain, tidak mampu mengatasi setiap permasalahan yang ada dan tidak mampu menemukan solusinya
CONVERSATIONAL STYLE USED BY NAJWA SHIHAB AND THE MALLARANGENGS ON MATA NAJWA TALK SHOW PROGRAM JURUS MALLARANGENG EPISODE

This study investigates the conversational style used by Najwa Shihab and The Mallarangengs on Mata Najwa talk show program Jurus Mallarangeng episode. Mata Najwa is one of Metro TV talk show programs hosted by a senior journalist, Najwa Shihab. In conducting the research, the writer tries to analyze the conversational style used by Najwa Shihab, Andi Mallarangeng who is the Former Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs as well as the suspect of Hambalang corruption case, and Rizal Mallarangeng who is The Mallarangengs Spokesman.The problem to be solved the study is what is the conversational style used by Najwa Shihab and the Mallarangengs on Mata Najwa Talk Show Program Jurus Mallarangeng Episode. The main theory used in this study is Tannen’s (2005), supported by Yule’s (1996) theory.This study used qualitative approach since the writer tried to analyze the utterances of Najwa Shihab and The Mallarangengs. The data of the study were Najwa Shihab’s and The Mallarangengs’s utterances containing conversational style in Mata Najwa talk show Jurus Mallarangeng episode.It was found out that Najwa Shihab and The Mallarangengs often used high involvement style than high considerateness Style almost in every segment. It is proven by the usage of each feature of high involvement style such as topic, pacing and expressive paralinguistic proposed by Tannen (2005), which are often use than high considerateness style such as slow turn taking and slow rate of speech proposed by Yule (1996).To sum up, Najwa Shihab often uses high involvement style to criticize Hambalang corruption case, which involve The Mallarangengs. Further, Andi Mallarangeng and Rizal Mallarangeng use high involvement style to clarify the truth about hambalang corruption case.The writer suggests English Department students discussed about conversational style. She also suggests the next researchers conduct a study about conversational style using different object, such as Oprah Winfrey talk show
EXPRESSIVE ACTS USED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN LIFE OF PI FILM
Keywords: Speech Acts, Illocutionary Acts, Expressive Acts. Language is a mediumto deliver message among humans to reach understanding to each other. Expressing feeling and emotion are also included into language’s function performed in daily conversation. Viewed from the Speech Acts theory, expressing feeling and emotion is included into expressive act. Expressive acts are the ones indicating psychological states of the speaker which can be statements of thanking, apologizing, welcoming, congratulating, and so on. Dealing with this, the writer conducted a research about expressive actsof the main character’s utterances in Life of Pi film. There are two problems to be solved; (1) what are the types of expressive acts in Life of Pi film, and (2) what are the functions of expressive acts in Life of Pi film.This research uses qualitative method because the analysis is in the form of description. Then, the research is conducted through documentary analysis since Pi’sutterances are in textual form of film script containing expressive acts. The result ofthe research shows there are four types of expressive acts used by Pi in his utterances, namely (1) acts of thanking, (2) acts of apologizing, (3) acts of congratulating, and (4) acts of welcoming. There are also seven functions of expressive acts in Pi’s utterances, including (1) to show gratitude, (2) to show regret, (3) to avoid conflict, (4) to show acceptance, (5) to reveal guilty feeling, (6) to show frustration, and (7) to show appreciation.The findings of this research shows that the types of expressive acts used mostly in the main character’s utterances is acts of apologizing followed by acts of thanking. Meanwhile, the functions of expressive acts are various caused by the situations around the utterances. The writer wants to give suggestion to the next researchers who are interested in conducting thesis in the same field to conduct a research about expressive acts from other sources, such as reality shows, interviews and serial TV shows to extend the theory of expressive acts. At last, the writer hopes this research can be a reference about expressive acts
DECODING CONNOTATIVE MEANING IN THREE (3) PROVIDER ADVERTISEMENT KEBEBASAN EPISODE
Keywords: Semiotics, Codes, Connotative Meaning, Three (3) provider, Advertisement.This study analyzes the codes and connotative meaning in Three (3) provider advertisement kebebasan episode. Three (3) provider is one of provider which is distributed in Indonesia. In this research, the writer analyzed the codes and connotative meaning used in Three (3) Provider in order to understand the deeper meaning of this advertisement. The research problems are: 1) What kind of codes used in Three (3) Provider kebebasan episode, 2) What are the connotative meaning found in Three (3) provider kebebasan episode. The main theory used in this study are tripartite framework from Chandler (2007) and the order of signification from Barthes (1957).This study uses qualitative approach since the writer tries to analyze the visual and verbal elements of Three (3) Provider advertisement kebebasan episode. The data of the study are video advertisement containing codes and connotative in Three (3) Provider advertisement kebebasan episode.The results of this study reveal that Three (3) provider advertisement kebebasan episode contains codes and connotative meaning to deliver message about freedom in society and insinuate other provider implicitly at the same time. Three codes proposed by Chandler are applied in the advertisement. The codes which are found are social codes (verbal language, bodily codes, commodity codes); textual codes (genre, rhetorical and stylistic code; mass media code) and interpretative codes (perceptual code). In the finding, all of the scenes of Three (3) Provider advertisements kebebasan episode have connotative meanings because all of them contain both images and utterances that have hidden messages.To sum up, Three (3) provider uses codes and connotative meaning to deliver the deeper message about freedom in society and insinuate other provider implicitly. Further, the readers can get additional information related to the codes and connotative meaning. The writer suggests for the next researchers who are interested in the semiotics to take data from other sources like radio, newspaper, magazine, advertisement poster or novel poster. The future researcher can use theories from other experts as well
