The role and contribution of Islam as a religion in the process of education in this country is both clear and remarkable. The contribution is so significant that many have believed that the Islamic system of education in the country has become what can be called a sub-culture within the national system of education. This paper tries to expose this in the context of the goal, the development and the core of education in Islam. The paper argues that the Islamic system of education is based on the vision of the Qur`an concerning man, his knowledge and attitude. For Islam, education is about sharpening man?s mind and softening his heart. It is this premise that underlines the whole argument of the paper. The paper further shows that this vision is in a total line with the objectives and goals of our national education. The paper then speaks of what it calls the ?new nationalistic form of Islamic education? in which the religious and national values are integrated. This new model of education is not only idealistic but also transformative and innovative in the context of Indonesia and is relevant vis-?-vis the demands of modernity

Although Syari?ah is considered by many as the ideal form of social?as well as financial- order, it is nonetheless not immune from practical and perhaps technical problems, so to speak. With regards to the Syari?ah finance, cases on the ground show that transaction involving dispute by different parties does often occur. This dispute has nothing to do with the Syari?ah itself indeed, but with the way it is applied. Syari?ah however anticipates this dispute to happen, concerning which this paper is interested. It is concerned with discussing this anticipation and in what way does Syari?ah offer the way-out to resolve such a dispute in matters relating to financial contract. The paper argues that the ability of such system as Syari?ah to resolve problems and offer solution for disputes can be an indicator whether the system can be judged as an ideal or not. One of the techniques that the Syari?ah has offered in dealing with dispute is what it calls Musyawarah (negotiation); a technique that in fact has been regulated in the Indonesian law. This technique will also be investigated in this paper

Qiyās dan Istiḥsān dalam Rasionalitas Uṣūl al-Sarakhsī

There are two conceptual terms that this paper will try to expose. The first is analogy (qiyās) and the second is istiḥsān, an analogy?like method of extrapolating jurisprudential rules. The paper will try to speak of their relationship in the light of al-Sarakhsī's rationality. In the field of Islamic jurisprudence, the two concepts are often seen as contradicting to one another. The Shafiite jurists are even of belief that using istiḥsān is legally forbidden for that would contradict the general rules of Islamic law. The paper assumes that despite general view of the jurists that istiḥsān is an equivocal method it can nonetheless be fitted into qiyâs. To show that however, the paper would inevitably re-define both qiyās and istiḥsān as proposed by al-Sarakhs?. By exploiting the ideas of al-al-Sarakhsī, the paper hopes that new lights may be shed as far as the richness of Islamic method in jurisprudence is concerned

    Get PDF
The history of Muslims in different part of the world has shown that the religion of Islam is disseminated through various form of dakwah ranging from music, rites, and even dance. The medium of dakwah has always changed depending on the nature and character of the society in which Islam is propagated. In Indonesia for example, the Javanese music called Gamelan was used by the Nine-saints to carry out their dakwah activities. This paper tries to discuss this. It is aimed at answering the question of what is the extent to which the medium of dakwah is being used in a particular propagation activity, and what would be the implication on the dissemination of Islam in using this medium. The paper is particularly interested in investigating what it calls the cyberdakwah, namely dakwah by means of modern technology such as the internet and the like. It asks, what are the positive and negative implications of this way of dakwah for Islam and community at large? As the paper tries to come up with the answer for the question, it keeps in mind the fact that the cyberdakwah reflects the adaptive ability of the Muslims in carrying out their dakwah activities

Sunnah dalam Nalar Islam Kontemporer Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd

This paper deals with the notion of Sunna according to one of the most leading contemporary Muslim thinkers, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd. The paper explores both his view concerning the Sunna, and his methodology of how to understand it. The paper discovers that the man does find in the Sunna a kind of flexibility that makes it open for new understanding and application within new context. His conception of the Sunna can be found in his ideas concerning the nature, position, validity and the interpretation of religious text. Given that the Sunna comes only second after the Qur?an, the former must therefore be interpreted in the light of the latter. The paper tries to show that what is interesting about studying Abu Zayd is his view to transform the Islamic religious texts from merely mythological narratives into a logical and living tradition

It speaks of morality as a form of mental attitude and personality. The paper moves to explore the central role that Madrasah/School can play as a strategic partner toward this end. The paper discovers that thus far the Madrasah and schools in the country are indulging only in the cognitive aspect of the students, ignoring in the process their affective and spiritual aspects. The last two are processes toward character building, leaving them aside will lead to moral loses. The paper finally offers some conceptual and practical steps in which educating students affectively and spiritually can be done

Civil Religion dalam Rajutan Keagamaan NU

    Get PDF
The basic question that this paper tries to answer is, is it possible for the values of different ?often contending- religions in a single country to be the basis for the nationhood? Or, can the values of a single religion in a country where different religions exist be the basis of the state? The answer that this paper propagates is certainly no. But another question arises. What then the values ?assuming that values are a must in a society or country as a term of moral reference- that must be adopted by all? It is toward answering this question that this paper is aimed at. It argues that religious values are universal and meaningful for human kind. They can serve as the basis for human benefit and well-being. But these values ?often originated from different religions- must not only be accommodated but also be reconciled. And the reconciling concept cannot be a religion, for that would mean that we support one religion at the expense of others. Hence this paper proposes that what has commonly been known a civil religion be the common ground -the sacred canopy as it were- in which various religious values can be integrated. It is in other words, the integrating mechanism for different religious values, which in turn can bring the social and political harmony for all citizens. The paper will discuss particularly this notion by referring to the concept of the Nahdhatul Ulama (NU) on nationhood and national identity

Reflective learning can help learners improve their understanding and awareness of Islamic values learned through learning activities which involve the process of reflection. Application of reflective learning approach has been proven to improve the success of PAI learning in schools characterized by increased religiosity of students, both in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, and attractiveness

Studi Kritis atas Metode Tafsir Tematis al-Quran

    Get PDF
This article is about a critical study of the thematic method of the Quran. It studies the nature of the method and provides a critical assessment of it. One of the gaps that the study will try to fill in is the lack of attention being given to the context out of which any particular text was revealed. The thematic approach is not particularly good at looking at the backgrounds of the text. It is this shortcoming that the paper will try to evaluate critically. It argues that the task of any interpreter of a text has been to understand first and foremost the surroundings that shape the text and constitute part and parcel of it. This understanding would determine the nature of the text and help guide the interpreter in the process of interpretation. The meaning of a text can change according to its context. The same word can infer to a different subject also according to the context. The paper will further elaborate this point further so as to give a clear idea that a thematic approach cannot ignore this aspect of exegesis

Problematika Talfīq Mazhab dalam Penemuan Hukum Islam

    Get PDF
It has been commonly argued that the Islamic law is ordained to address and preserve the interest of men. The rules and values of Islamic law are therefore in accordance with the nature of human being. And because the Islamic law is revealed for all season, as it were, it must accordingly be deeply flexible so that it may fit to all time and all space. This paper addresses this notion of flexibility that Islamic law enjoys by arguing that flexibility is a quality that Islamic law should have if it is to survive. But, it moves on, that flexibility is one thing and the ability of Muslim scholars in preserving this flexibility is something else. While by its very nature, Islamic law is flexible the methods and approaches that some Muslim scholars have developed did work on the nerve of this divine law. One of such method is talfīq, in which one would take the views of different scholars to produce a legal dictum. This method is the focus of this paper. It contends that in principle, the method is a result of the absence of the independent mind in the history of Islam. It nonetheless, does serve as a good method to produce a legal premises suitable for certain type of Muslim society. But it does not always work to preserve the flexibility of the Islamic law
