Klaim Religious Authority dalam Konflik Sunni-Syi'i Sampang Madura
This paper deals with the most recent religion-based conflict on the island of Madura involving some Shi?ite and their opponents. The conflict took place mid of 2011. The paper traces the history of the conflict, the parties involved in it, and the various factors that triggered it to happen. It argues that although the conflict is local, it nonetheless reflects the larger and most ?global? kind of conflict between the Sunnis and the Shi?is. Considering that the Muslims of Madura are always NU in their theology and tradition, the paper asks to what extend does NU lose its influence on the island in this particular regard. Theories concerning conflict will be used to explain this rare development. Preliminary assumption might however be said that the conflict reflects (1) the need of the Madurese agrarian society for a better harmonious state of life, or else (2) the need to punish those who have gone astray from the traditional religious belief, or reflects (3) the latent power struggle between various religious denomination on the island. These are the problems that the paper will try to address
Muslim Diaspora dalam Isu Identitas, Gender, dan Terorisme
The word Diaspora has been understood as the dissemination of certain group of people -notably the Jewish and Chinese- to other country or land while keeping in touch culturally with the country of their origin. This paper discusses this notion of Diaspora in the case of Muslims by relating it to the problems of identity, gender and terrorism. The paper asks whether Muslim migration to other countries is a form of shame or honor both for Muslims themselves and for the country of their destination. The three key issues that we raise will be used as both indicators and framework within which the notion of Muslim self-esteem is investigated. The underlining view that highlights the whole argument of the paper is that a great majority of Muslims in Diaspora has not been able to associate culturally with the country of destination, hence creating a tension with the local culture
Kritik Abdullah Saeed terhadap Praktik Pembiayaan Murabahah pada Bank Islam
This paper is aimed at discussing the critical view of Abdullah Saeed as far as murabahah is concerned. For Saeed, this banking practice, which is adapted and adopted from Syari?ah has caused a lot of controversies. The basic question that a man like him asks is, does this Syari?ah banking system really make a difference? Nonetheless, it is this Syari?ah-based banking product that dominated the whole Islamic banking system in the great majority of Islamic countries. Investigating the nature of this product becomes therefore both strategic and important so as to have a better and proper understanding of it. This proper understanding will in turn influence the way this product is promoted and sold to the public in line with the values of Syari?ah. The paper will also compare murabahah with the similar banking practices in the conventional banks
Pendidikan Antikorupsi melalui Budaya Sekolah Berbasis Nilai-nilai Keislaman
Corruption has become a kind of endemic in a country like Indonesia. It becomes our serious challenge therefore to deal with it properly and appropriately. This paper argues first and foremost that combating corruption through law enforcement is not enough. It proposes instead, that preventing corruption can only be effective and affective through education. By education we mean that which sharpens and softens the mindset, attitudes, and behavior of the educated. Our schools have hitherto been focusing on the cognitive aspect of education only ignoring in that process its spiritual and affective aspects. What is needed?this paper further argues?is value inculcation in the mind and heart of the students in such a way that when they grow up they can look after themselves as far as avoiding vices is concerned. Value inculcation in turn can only work when a religious education and instruction is involved. Hence, good education is what which incorporates religious teaching and doctrine into the system of education. It is to this point that this paper is destined
Genealogi Teologi Nahdlatul Ulama
NU, the largest social and religious organization in Indonesia, has undergone many changes since its very inception decades ago. But the essence of the organization remains the same, namely its theological doctrine and ?ideological? inclination toward the Sunna. This paper tries to speak of the struggle of NU in this changing era to remain as it is. It traces the theological genealogy of the organization, and how this theology has been transformed from time to time to meet the demands of Indonesian setting. Here NU is understood as a dynamic religious organization capable of translating certain theology and ideology into a totally different look. Hence, although it was originated in the theology of al-Asy?ariyyah and al-Maturidiyah, NU was not at all representing any of these two Middle Eastern theologies. Unlike the two, NU emphasizes theoretically the idea of justice, moderation, and tolerance while practically upholding the adaptive and adoptive attitude toward local customs and traditions
Ortodoksi Sufisme K.H. Shalih Darat
The subject of this paper is the orthodox nature of KH Shalih Darat?s Sufism. He is an Indonesian Muslim thinker of the 19th century. The paper argues that the man is behind the dissemination of not only Islam but also of Sufism on the Javanese island. Despite his high standing knowledge and piety however, the man is not yet known especially in the academic circle in Indonesia. It is this reason that the paper is interested in exploring his ideas and intellectual biography. The paper tries to show that Muslim community during his lifetime was polarized into the elites and the laymen. K.H. Shalih Darat targeted the latter while not forgetting the former. But the most striking question would be how does his orthodox religiosity fit into the laymen and work for the elites? The paper will try to answer this question by emphasizing first that for the man, orthodoxy is a must for people of the Javanese outlook. And second, it will try show that while orthodoxy and heterodoxy are always at odds with one another, the tension between the two does bring a good implication for the course of dakwah on the island
Biogas Tinja Manusia dalam Perspektif Fiqih-Kimia
Energy is one of the most important factors to global prosperity. The dependence on fossil fuels as primary energy source has led to global climate change, environmental degradation, and human health problems. In order to reduce dependence on commercial energy, steps have been taken to develop an alternative source, such as biogas. Biogas was a gas produced from biological activities in anaerobic fermentation processes and as a renewable energy. Biogas is one form of the alternative energy. It is environmentally friendly. However, biogas and its utilization still pose a serious problem within Muslim community, especially the pesantren. It is not easy for the pesantren to accept it on jurisprudential grounds. This paper attempts to examine the nature of biogas by looking at it as a human waste, and how does Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) treat human waste particularly in terms of its use for human purpose. The paper also compares fiqh perspective with that of chemistry. The underlining argument that the paper tries to build is that legal compound component of human waste biogas (methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide) is sacred, and must therefore be treated accordingl
Strategi Public Relations Pesantren Sidogiri dalam Membangun Citra Lembaga Pendidikan Islam
Pesantren has been believed to be a form of indigenous educational system in Indonesia. The history and nature of pesantren have both shown that there is a good relation between pesantren and the society. This will be the focus of the study. It would investigate the notion of how pesantren is related to the wider community, and what are its strategies to keep the community in touch with it? All this will be discussed with referring particularly to the case of pesantren Sidogiri and its already-existing unit called public relation unit. Qualitative in its nature, the paper is phenomenological in its approach. It assumes that generally speaking, any pesantren in Indonesia would ?in the beginning- run by accident, and not by design. But as it grows, it becomes as modern as any advanced educational institution would be. Hence, the paper will show that pesantren Sidogiri is aware of the importance of imagebuilding, and that it consciously pursues it through its software and hardware mechanism. The paper will also show that the surrounding community and the alumni are in fact part of the pesantren?s network to build a better image
Kebijakan Distribusi Ekonomi Islam dalam Membangun Keadilan Ekonomi Indonesia
Market has always been part of development in Indonesia and in any country in that matter. How far development will succeed depends very much therefore on the nature of market. Well-managed market will certainly affect the process of development. This paper deals with the relationship between market and development with particular attention to the notion of justice. It argues that in Indonesia economic injustice is the main cause for the failure of development for many decades. The paper tries to show the many indicators of that injustice which includes among others, the unequal distribution of wealth among the citizens. The paper then moves to the economic system of Islam which ?it argues- is based on the concept of justice, and maintains that this Islamic system can be both the solution and alternative for the ailing Indonesian economy
Manajemen Risiko Investasi Wakaf Uang
This paper is aimed at discussing the notion of endowment as a form of investment. Like any other kinds of investment, endowment needs a proper management especially that which is related to risk. Hence, the subject of this paper is risk management for money endowment, i.e., endowment in the form of money. A lack of proper management will certainly lead to the unsuccessful investment such as the ineffective cash-flow which occurs as a result of inflation. The paper argues that the unsuccessful endowment is often the victim of its own ineffective management, or else of its inefficient managers. Many endowments have no managers and management, the result of which being that it cannot be sustained and made use of. While the Syari?ah banking has improved dramatically in many Muslim countries, and has been run professionally, the paper asks, why is it not the case with the endowment sector
