Sharia, Two Sides of the Same Coin: The Contradictions between Sharia and Adat (Case Studies of Minangkabau’s Matrilineal and Land Tenure System)
Since the implementation of regional autonomy laws in Indonesia, large numbers of sharia-inspired laws have been implemented in the West Sumatera Province. Furthermore, some Minangkabau people, the ethnic group indigenous to the province, have insisted in the abolishment of the matrilineal and land tenure system, which they believe is not in accordance with sharia. For hundreds of years, the Minangkabau ethnic have been famous for being one of the world’s largest matrilineal societies, and the inheritance of land and property ownership is handed down according to the matrilineal principle over generations. As a result, conflicts arise within indigenous communities (internal conflict-horizontal) since its proponents and opponents are equally strong in the society. The most interesting aspect to be analyzed is the fact that the disputing groups use sharia to legitimize their points of view. Some argue that the matrilineal and land tenure system is in accordance with sharia while others argue otherwise. This study will focus on the discourse beyond the epistemic claim made by the disputing groups. This paper argues that the mix of ideological, political and economic interests play a significant role behind the struggle for control of the religious discourse, particularly related to the matrilineal and the land tenure system in the Minangkabau post reformasi era

Pesantren as the Source of Peace Education
This paper gives a new perspective about pesantren (Islamic boarding school) as the source of peace education in Indonesia using three concepts; First is a collective opinion that reflected in the UN Declaration of Culture of Peace, second is the definition of peace education based on peace and conflict resolution studies, and third is the historical side of Islam in Indonesia. To explain the main idea about pesantren as the source of peace education, this paper uses the qualitative method in analyzing the data from interviews in some pesantren in Madura Island in 2014. This paper constructs a hypothesis that pesantren is the unique source and very potential for creating Indonesian peace leaders in the future. This idea is simply coming from a common sense that Muslims majority in Indonesia send their children to the pesantren to have a good education and good manner as well. But on the other side, some pesantren precisely create some radicals, so I would like to uphold this issue by telling the Union European historical experience to handle radicalizes through peace education by harmonizing state-religion relationship

Empirical Facts of Educational Chances for Women in Islamic World: Past and Present
This article explores educational opportunities in the early period of Islam until the 13th century, which shows the significant role of women in education. It can be argued that the role of women in education can be traced not only in certain areas of religious knowledge but also in the patronage of education and even in determining the political policy of the government. Unfortunately, compared to the next period until the 21st century, policy concerning education has recently turned to unfair treatment such as marginalization, exclusion, and even deprivation. What is surprising is that the reasons for the genitals, which deprive women of their right to participate in education, casually occurred. In other cases, socio-cultures are restricting their access to education. The factual errors on educational thoughts for women here are explicitly used as an empirical description in this study, while its purpose is to demonstrate the shift in the treatment of female education. The result expected in this study is to reach the historical footprint of Islamic education and ensure inappropriate reasons, such as genital terms, used and abused as arguments for not allowing women to get an education
