    Antibacterial Activities of Seaweed (Eucheuma cottonii ) Extract Against Escherichia coli Bacteria

    Indonesia is a maritime country that has more than 70% of its territory dominated by oceans and is a marine area that has abundant natural resources, one of which is Eucheuma cottonii. The content of compounds by E. cottonii has many benefits, the compound content of E.cottonii is a phenolic compound (flavonoids). Flavonoids found in seaweed E. cottonii are secondary metabolite compounds that can produce antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of seaweed extract (E. cottonii) against Escherichia coli bacteria. The method that has been used in this research is descriptive method, including extraction, maceration, antibacterial activity test. The results of this study stated that the antibacterial activity of E. cottonii seaweed extract was able to inhibit the growth of E. coli bacteria. The highest antibacterial activity was found at a concentration of 50% ppm dry extract solution with a methanol solvent of 3.3 mm while the lowest antibacterial activity was found at a concentration of 5% ppm wet extract solution with a methanol solvent whose inhibitory activity value was 0.1 mm. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity test for positive control showed a strong inhibitory value of 7.8 mm, while the negative control did not indicate any inhibitory value against E. coli bacteria

    Estimating The Ability of Lanceleaf Arrowhead (Sagittaria lancifolia ) in Phytoremediation of Heavy Metal Copper (Cu)

    One of Indonesia's strategies to improve the quality of its economy as a developing country is to boost industrial activity. However, the existence of industry has a detrimental consequence, one of which is heavy metal copper pollution (Cu). Phytoremediation is one of the ecologically acceptable pollutant treatment methods. Phytoremediation approaches using Sagittaria lancifolia plants are thought to be capable of overcoming heavy metal Cu contamination in the environment. This research is a preliminary study into the limitations of the Sagittaria lancifolia plant's capacity to absorb heavy metal Cu. This study employed an experimental technique, which was carried out between March 26 and April 7, 2021, in the Purwodadi Botanic Garden's Greenhouse, with four concentration variations, namely 0 mg/L, 1 mg/L, 3 mg/L, and 5 mg/L. According to the result of this research, the plant Sagittaria lancifolia may remediate heavy metal Cu at a maximum concentration of 5 mg/L. This is due to the fact that at this concentration, the Sagittaria lancifolia plant presents indications of death, particularly severe chlorosis and necrosis

    Decomposition Rate of Avicennia lanata in Bakau Kecil Mangrove Forest Area, Mempawah District

    Avicenna lanata is a type of mangrove that dominates the Mempawah Kecil Mangrove Forest. As many as 10 bacterial genera were identified from station 1 which is close to the influence of sea water, and 8 bacterial genera from station 2 which are close to residential areas. This study aims to determine the rate of decomposition of A. lanata leaf litter with 4 observation time periods with an interval of 15 days, namely the 15th, 30th, 45th and 60th days. The observations show that the rate of decomposition of the litter on the 15th day of observation is higher. Namely 0.206 gram/day at station I and 0.19 gram/day at station II, while the lowest rate of decomposition of litter occurred on the 60th day of observation, namely 0.112 gram/day at station I and 0.106 gram/day at station II. In addition, the parameters of physical and chemical of the environment such as DO, temperature, pH and salinity are in the range of their optimum values

    The ability to taste phenylthiocarbamide (PTC), is autosomal trait inherited in a simple Mendelian recessive pattern. The frequency of Taster and non-Taster allele is varies in different populations. The purpose of the research is to investigate the prevalence, gene frequency and genotype frequency of taster (T) and non taster (ts of Osing population in Kemiren-Banyuwangi. PTC serial dilution method was used to assess the PTC Taster and non-Taster phenotypes. The Hardy–Weinberg method was used to determine allele frequencies. The total of samples were 227 people, male were 117 and female were 110 with age range of 15–30 years were randomly selected. The result showed that the Osing population as Taster were 210 (92,52%) and non Taster were 17samples (7,48%) . The allele frecuency of Taster (T) was 0,73 and non Taster (t) was 0,27 respectively. The genotype frequency of dominant Taster (TT) was 0,54, heterozygosity Taster (Tt) was 0,39, and genotype of non Taster (tt) was 0,07

    Effect of Baluran Gum Arabic on Blood Glucose Level in Diabetic Rat (Rattus Novergicus )

    Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease which indicated with increasing blood glucose level. Carbohidrate, protein, mineral and secondary metabolite (alkaloid, tannin and saponin) can be benefical to treat diabetes mellitus. Rats were randomly divided into three groups. First, control group. Second, STZ group, untreated diabetic. Third, STZ+GA 15% group, diabetic treated with GA 15%. Result showed that blood glucose level before STZ induction on control and STZ group within normal range 78,57±11,90 mg/dL and 74,85±6,86 mg/dL. Blood glucose level significantly increase after STZ induction on STZ and STZ+GA 15% group become 375±6,53 mg/dL and 346,42±50,23 mg/dL. Diabetic rat treated with GA 15% revealed decrease in blood glucose level compared to untreated diabetic rat. Blood glucose level on STZ+GA 15% group continuously decrease become 96,42±13,45 mg/dL and 82,14±9,19 mg/dL. In conclusion, GA 15% could reduce blood glucose level on diabetic rat

    Padang sapu-sapu soil is similar with post-tin mining soil in its white sand texture and poor nutrient. One factor causes the disturbed land in Bangka Belitung islands is tin mining activity. One method to rehabilitate marginal soil is by utilizing the potential nonsymbiotic N2-fixing bacteria, which are able to fertilize the soil and is able to provide macro nutrient. This study aims to measure the abundance and potency of non-symbiotic N2-fixing bacteria in padang sapu-sapu, Pejem Village, Bangka. The site selection is determined by purposive sampling method and interviews and the samples were collected randomly. Isolation used selective media Ashby'`s Monitol Agar and Azospirillum media. Morphological characterization was conducted on isolates and a series selective test was carried out, i.e. hipersentivity test, hemolysis test, IAA phytohormone test and nitrogenase test. The study of the abundance population of non-symbiotic N2-fixing bacteria of two different locations showed that the total bacterial population in padang sapusapu is very small compared to its lowland forest. Isolate Azotobacter sp. TH105(a) from the lowland forests is potential as natural fertilizer

    Climate index insurance is an insurance that provides reimbursement for losses due to decreased harvest rates or crop failures caused by weather. The use of Historical Burn Analysis (HBA) method in determining climate index based on rainfall resulted in a concept of the agricultural insurance payment in Pasuruan Regency. The application of The Black Scholes method in determining agricultural insurance premiums is obtained when rainfall more than 17 mm the premium is Rp 221,234. If the rainfall are 13 mm ≥ RR < 17 mm, the nominal premium paid by farmers to the insurance party is Rp 147,489. Respondents in the study were farmers who owned rice fields. Instrument quality testing (questionnaire) using validity test and reliability test using the help of SPSS statistical software. It can be concluded that the questionnaire is valid and reliable. Based on the results of the questionnaire, farmers considered that the nominal agricultural insurance premiums are in accordance with farmers' income

    Briquette is an alternative simple fuel that has a relatively high calorific value, so it has the potential to reduce the use of firewood and fuel oil (BBM). Herbal waste is one of the biomass materials that came from the rest of the material in the production of herbal medicine made from medicinal plants. Utilization of herbal dregs as briquettes has been implemented by PT. Industri Jamu dan Farmasi Sido Muncul. Tbk, as fuel for boiler engines. Making briquettes from biomass requires the addition of materials, one of which is coconut shell charcoal and adhesives such as molasses and tapioca flour to improve the physical properties of the briquettes. Briquettes with good quality have a maximum moisture content and ash content of 8%, a heating value of more than 5000 cal/gram, a constant combustion temperature of 350℃ for a long period of time and is easily flammable. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of briquettes based on the value of water content, ash content, combustion temperature, combustion rate, and calorific value. Variable treatment with the addition of coconut shell charcoal with several doses of 10%, 20%, and 30% and variations of adhesive materials. Data analysis was performed by using two-factor ANOVA statistical test. The results showed that briquettes with tapioca flour adhesive and 30% coconut shell charcoal composition had the best characteristics of briquettes compared to other variations

    Total Phenolic Content, Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities of Sargassum polycystum of Ethanol Extract from Waters of Kabung Island

    Sargassum policystum is one of the genus Sargassum from the brown macroalgae group which has an abundance of chemical constituents of fucoidan, fucoxanthin, phenolic acids and alginate which have important biological activities, such as antioxidants and antibacterials. This species thrives in the waters of Kabung Island, Bengkayang, West Kalimantan and has not been exploited so that it tends to act as a marine weed. This study aimed to determine the total phenolic content of the ethanolic extract of S. policystum and its antioxidant and antibacterial activity. Determination of the total content of phenolic compounds using the Folin Ciocalteu method, antioxidant testing using the DPPH method (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and the indicator of sample color change with the addition of these radicals was measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Antibacterial testing was carried out by the test sample diffusion method and the inhibition of the growth of the test bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli as test bacteria was indicated by the formation of a clear area around the sample wells. The results showed that the phenol content of the ethanolic extract of S. policystum was 79.8 mg/g extract, its antioxidant activity (IC50) was 98.903 ppm, classified as a strong antioxidant, while the comparison antioxidant, Vitamin C, had an IC50 of 6.26 ppm. The inhibitory ability of the ethanol extract against the test bacteria used was indicated by the formation of the largest inhibition diameter on S. aureus of 12.4 mm and E. coli of 12.0 mm
