Ethics after theory
Today, architectural theory has atrophied. Despite a perceived need for different theoretical ways of clarifying, explaining and understanding the complex phenomena of contemporary architectural production prior to a designer’s intervention, there are few existing theoretical frameworks. Without either the descriptive or projective enablement by theory, conscientious and critical practices in architecture will have few alternatives against the tide of neoliberal city-making. In this paper, I make a pun of Speaks’s (2006) paper titled, ‘Intelligence after theory’ by arguing that while (design) intelligence is necessary, it is however not sufficient. Ethics is also needed in architecture. Through a brief restatement of a canonical debate in the critical school of architectural theory, I argue why ethics is needed in architecture, and how ethics could be further developed through theory and theorization

Patterns and uses of mezzanine of low cost apartments in Surabaya
Dwelling today should provide an opportunity for residents to develop. The design of storey residential buildings including apartments for low-income community should be thought about how these poor families are also developing therefore their space requirement is also growing. Rusunawa in Surabaya is a simple multi-storey dwelling which is built to accommodate disadvantaged households. Usually the available space comprising: a multi-functional space, a kitchen, a bathroom / WC, and sometimes completed with a balcony. The space that can be lived in here is only the multi-functional space. So, only in this space the family take care all their activities both the private activities such as sleeping and storing money, as well as public activities such as entertaining, watching TV etc. Addition space at least for separating between their private and public activities is exactly needed. In this case, beside by partitioning, separating the multi-functional space by constructing a mezzanine is the best and most legal way for creating additional (private) space. This study aims to investigate the patterns and whatever uses of space that can be made by household residents of low cost apartments in Surabaya for their mezzanine dealing with their adapting action in meeting their spatial demands. A hundred of users living in Rusunawa spreading out in 14 locations in Surabaya are taken as samples. The methods applied are questionnaires and checklist. Results of study expected are patterns and uses of mezzanin
Application of Supply Chain Performance Measurement in Scor Model at Building Project
The supply chain has become a priority subject of management research and manufacturing theory in recent years. It has also become an interesting topic in the construction industry. Construction supply chain management is more concerned with the coordination of discrete quantities of materials delivered to a specific construction project. Currently, in some building project, there has been no standard indicators in measuring the performance of the supply chain. Therefore, further research is needed to define the performance indicators there. One of supply chain performance measurement model is Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR). The SCOR model provides a unique framework that links performance metrics, processes, best practices, and people into a unified structure. The objective of the study is to define the application of SCOR in construction project. There are 11 Key Performance Indicator (KPI) on the SCOR model that could be used as an supply chain performance indicator in construction project. The research method of this study is by conducting a questionnaire to the project manager and material supplier to determine how the indicators are applied in building projects. The result of the study is the definition of each KPI at building project which facilitates understanding of construction stakeholders to measure the performance of the supply chain
Implementation of Geoportal for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Penanggungan and Trowulan
Cultural heritage is a cultural richness of the nation as a manifestation of human life’s, thoughts and behaviors that are important for understanding the history as well as the science and culture of our ancestors. In East Java there are two cultural heritage areas have been selected by the government: Penanggungan (as of January 14, 2015) and Trowulan (as of December 30, 2013) as provincial and national cultural heritages, respectively. In this research, we built a geoportal data infrastructure for collecting, storing and visualizing the spatial distribution of cultural heritages in these two areas as one of the role in maintaining the preservation of cultural heritages. Based on our geoportal data, the location of cultural heritage located in the elevation ranged from 228 m- 1330 m (above sea level). The lowest cultural heritage was Situs Belahan and the highest one was Temple of Kama I. Trowulan Site has 75 artifact findings. This indicated that the Trowulan Site area was a residential area. While in Penanggungan site, the heritage was dominated by cultural object in the form of temple (about 32 object). It might be an indicator that Penanggungan site was a basis for ancient community worship rituals
Dynamics Finite Element for Ship Damage Collision Analysis
Abstract¾ Along with the growing fleet of vessels, ship collision accident cases are becoming more frequent. It is unavoidable that the rapid shipping due to the number of vessels that operate relatively large and the ship is waiting for the loading and unloading at the port. This study will examine the design of the solid bulk cargo ship safe for shipping operations congested areas. The finite element method is used to determine the amount of internal energy in the structure of damaged vessel. The striking ship is assumed a tanker that have a bulbous bow. Bulk carrier is designed with space of double skin 1.8 m and the structure of wing tank is determined previously. The results obtained from this research is the design of the cargo hold of bulk carrier that has a double skin to protect the leaking compartment when the ship was crashed. Penetration in depth 1.8 m will be occurred at ship if ship crashed is with speed 12 knots and weight 1400 tons
Seismic Confinement Design for Rectangular Columns With Considering Shear Effect
This research discusses the role of transverse reinforcement as seismic reinforced concrete columns confinement. The latest confinement design addressed for columns remains standing under certain level of axial compression and displacement demands. However, this purpose did not consider shear effect. An approach formulation to determine the amount of confinement for reinforcement concrete that account effect of shear is provided. This method is based on combined effects of axial and shear stress that found in coulomb failure criterion. The proposed formulation are tested in 163 column test result data base and compared with several building codes. The result showed that the formulation can reduce amount of confinement safely for most columns
