Beyond the topic-marking discourse function of Left Dislocations. Evidence from Italian, Spanish, and English spoken corpora

    No full text
Left Dislocations (LDs) are generally regarded as carrying a Topic/Comment information partition and performing an overall topic-marking discourse function. However, when confronted with actual texts, the description of both information structure and discourse functions fails to account for all the occurrences. In this paper, we present a cross-linguistic model for the description of LDs discourse functions, checked against Italian, English, and Spanish spoken corpora. Our results support Prince’s view that discourse functions cannot be simply derived by form, demonstrating that prosody, syntax, information structure and discourse functions do not always align. Crucially, we show that LDs are not only topic-marking and that the function performed are shaped by context. Assuming a broader, non-utterance centered perspective, we define LDs as prominence cues used by speakers to signal a disruption in the ongoing discourse, the nature of this discourse prominence being dynamic and evolving as the text unfolds

A Time that Goes Nowhere: The Resemantization of Time as an All-Human Language in Zheng Xiaoqiong's Poetry and our Contemporaneity

    No full text
Zheng Xiaoqiong (Sichuan 1980–) is a contemporary poet best known for her dagong (migrant workers’) poetry, often interpreted through subaltern or ecocritical lenses. This article proposes a broader reading of Zheng’s work, arguing that her poetry addresses the experience of time as a specifically human and embodied language. Departing from the linear, progress-oriented temporality underlying dominant modern narratives, Zheng’s poems reveal time as both physical and cognitively constructed – a rhythm inscribed on bodies and environments that exposes both the interdependence of all beings and the linguistic nature of human lives. Through an intersectional and transcorporeal approach, indebted to thinkers such as Adriana Cavarero and Stacy Alaimo, the contribution investigates how Zheng’s resemantization of time arises from her situated experience as a female migrant worker, yet ultimately speaks to the condition of human existence as a whole. Comparative readings with other Sinophone authors further highlight how her poetry transforms personal marginality into a wide-reaching meditation on the possibilities of being human in a world of supposed crises, and concrete, inevitable, transcorporeal – possibly transconscious – interconnection

Japanese Narratives for Children in Italy: Translation’s Challenges and Perspectives

    No full text
Recently scholars interested in translation of children's books have remarkably increased but relatively little systematic research has been conducted on Japanese works, particularly studies focused on translation from Japanese into Italian which are almost non-existent. Indeed, children's literature in Japan was fortunate to see a great number of translations from foreign countries which made a considerable contribution to the development of modern and contemporary children's literature. However, Japanese works for young people translated into Western languages are still very few - and this is the first reason of the lack of studies in this field - despite the growing popularity of Japanese literature overseas and the success of children's literature in the publishing market all over the world. My contribution aims to highlight some peculiarities of the translation into Italian from Japanese in the field of children's fiction, like coping with the writing system, the massive use of onomatopoeias, and some cultural aspects, especially in the use of realia as well as offer an overview of the current situation of Japanese narrative for children in Italy.Recently scholars interested in translation of children's books have remarkably increased but relatively little systematic research has been conducted on Japanese works, particularly studies focused on translation from Japanese into Italian which are almost non-existent. Translating Satirical Poetry: Leopardi’s Palinodia in English

    No full text
This article investigates the translation of satirical poetry using Leopardi’s Palinodia as a case study. The rationale behind the necessity to conduct an investigation of this kind lies in a twofold observation. Firstly, despite being an important part of the author’s oeuvre, Leopardi’s satirical works have never been scrutinised from the perspective of translation. Secondly, unlike other text genres, poetry conveys irony through specific stylistic and rhetorical devices which are particularly challenging in translation. However, satirical poetry is a little explored genre in humour translation theory. As a result, the specific challenges and techniques inherent to the rendition of humour in this text type are understudied in the literature. Against this backdrop, this article contrastively compares a series of English-language poetic translations of the Palinodia with the aim to identify the strategies adopted to transpose poetry’s ironic features across linguistic-cultural barriers. To address the paucity of studies focussing on satirical poetry from a translational perspective, the paper also advances a series of translation techniques specifically suited for the rendition of this literary genre. Special emphasis shall be given to the rendering of apostrophes and vocatives, epithets, hyperbatons, enjambments and foreignisms as well as the conflation of different types of lexicon and linguistic registers which are employed in the ST for satirical purposes. The translations analysed include those composed by Townsend (1887), Bickersteth (1923), Nichols (1994), Tusiani (1998) and Galassi (2010). The paper concludes with the observation that whilst the ST semantic and lexical features can be translated into the TL by using general translation techniques, the transposition of prosodic and syntactic devices call for tailored translation solutions. This article investigates the translation of satirical poetry using Leopardi’s Palinodia as a case study. Introduction: Back to Basics

    No full text
This monographic volume is dedicated to the notion of simplicity, simplification and related notions therein. The first section considers simplification from a translational perspective: if translation is, by its very nature, aimed at tearing down linguistic and cultural barriers, text simplification can be either a problem to overcome or a goal to achieve. The second section is dedicated to inclusivity and considers the readers not as ideal and abstract entities but as groups of individuals with specific needs. The third section deals with simplification in professional writing and the teaching of writing skills. The fourth section focuses on the language of medicine and healthcare, where imprecise, inexact or non-reader-friendly communication can have dramatic outcomes.

    L’informazione nelle investigazioni data driven

This paper examines the emerging forms of public surveillance enabled by artificial intelligence, which are reshaping both the epistemology and the normativity of investigative practices. Through predictive techniques and automated data analysis, the function of criminal prevention takes on a proactive and probabilistic structure, thereby challenging the principles of legality, proportionality, and transparency. Starting from a conceptual genealogy of surveillance, the study explores the transition from centralized disciplinary models to decentralized and opaque networked systems. Particular attention is devoted to the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), whose systemic implications and regulatory gaps are critically assessed. The paper ultimately proposes a reconceptualization of public surveillance in a constitutional framework, aimed at safeguarding fundamental rights in the digital space in light of the standards developed by the European Parliament’s PEGA Committee.

The Evolution of Hungarian National(ist) Art Exhibitions in the 1920s

    No full text
This article focuses on the “Representative Exhibitions” organized under the aegis of the Hungarian government in the inter-war period, from the end of the First World War until 1930. It considers the underlying ideology and rhetoric of these exhibitions and how they both changed over time. In their fundamental organization the shows were quite similar and often contained the same art works, but how these exhibitions and their artifacts were introduced by the catalogue essay often changed over time. Immediately after the First World War in the aftermath of the Treaty of Trianon, the exhibitions were revanchist. As the decade progressed, they become more and more modernist and international. Ultimately, in the latter years of the decade, as with the 1927 Polish and 1928 German shows, they became catalysts for reintegrating Hungarian history into that of Western Europe.L’articolo si concentra sulle “Esposizioni Rappresentative” organizzate sotto l’egida del governo ungherese nel periodo tra le due guerre, dalla fine della Prima guerra mondiale fino al 1930.

    No full text
In light of the thematic dossier on traveling exhibitions, the Experience and Publics section features an interview with Paola Cordera and Davide Turrini, curators of the exhibition Made in Italy. Destination America 1945-1954, held at the Fondazione Ragghianti in Lucca (April 5-June 29, 2025). The show reconstructed the network of postwar exhibitions that contributed to shaping Italy’s international image. Through an interdisciplinary research project and critical reflection on the tools of cultural export, the exhibition highlighted archival sources, domestic collections, and non-traditional research practices. The interview explores curatorial and display choices, revealing tensions between tradition and modernity in the construction of the Made in Italy narrative.
