Parish Churches and Public Space in Barcelona: A Catalan Experience During the 1950s and 1960s
This study examines the relationship between Catholic parish churches and urban development in Barcelona, Spain, focusing specifically on the 1950s and 1960s. During this period, a notable increase in church construction was observed, correlating with the city's demographic growth and immigration, as well as the need to reconstruct a devastated Diocese due to the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) aftermath.
The significant role of Archbishop Gregorio Modrego Casaus in this post-war reconstruction is emphasized. Under his leadership, many new parishes were established, and numerous damaged or destroyed temples were rebuilt. His strategic approach to restructuring the territory and the urban landscape of Barcelona during his tenure is highlighted.
The methodology of this study involves a comprehensive inventory of the 132 Parish churches of Barcelona, detailed architectural analysis, on-site visits, and the creation of graphical plans that depict the churches' relationship with their urban surroundings. The analysis spans from the oldest churches to the most recent additions, initially offering a chronological perspective, then focusing on the 37 built during the 1950s and 1960s, and finally presenting a paradigmatic case study: Sant Sebastià del Verdum (MBM architects). This temple perfectly embodies the era's changes, initiated by the Modern Movement and accelerated by the Second Vatican Council.
Overall, this research seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the connection between Catholic parish churches and urban development in Barcelona, particularly during a period of significant post-war growth
Audiovisual Narrative for Fashion Heritage: Communicating and Valorizing Archives through Fashion Film
The article investigates fashion film as a paratext to the materiality of fashion. It outlines methodology and creative practice in bridging traditional archives with contemporary digital storytelling as a means of knowledge transfer. These may include clothes, design practices, cultural narratives, and brand identities—all tangible and intangible assets that fashion heritage encompasses. Although previous scholarship has commented on the marketing and the aesthetic of fashion films, there is yet to be a comprehensive analysis of their potential as a viable mobility for documenting and communicating fashion’s historical and cultural legacies. The research illustrates how documentary fashion films archive creative processes and brand histories by unpacking a series of case studies. It highlights the role of fashion film festivals as platforms that amplify heritage narratives while fostering discussions on sustainability, diversity, and innovation. The study further proposes the development of a dedicated online database for fashion films, offering a participatory and accessible resource to preserve and disseminate fashion heritage. The article aims to add to the discussion surrounding fashion archival and preservation by providing an argument for fashion films — as aesthetic devices in representing culture and as integral storytelling and archiving tools that can preserve identity from one generation to another
Uncertainty, Fear and Action. A Critical Commentary on Patrik Aspers’ Book
In this critical commentary of Patrik Aspers’ book, I consider some of his assumptions that uncertainty is a universal human challenge that can be addressed through systems of mutual adjustments. I argue that a broad approach to risk that acknowledges both its rational knowledge and non-rational elements such as emotion, and combines future orientation with interrogation of the past, provides a way of understanding strategies for managing uncertainty. I consider the ways such an approach can be applied to a real-world case-study, the COVID-19 pandemic
On Uncertainty and Uncertainty Reduction
This essay introduces a Debate Section of Sociologica discussing Patrik Aspers’ book Uncertainty: Individual Problems and Public Solutions (Oxford University Press, 2024). It delineates the differences between risk and uncertainty as well as between individual means to reduce uncertainty and public ways of reducing uncertainty
‘Expanded’ Experiences of Knowledge of Cultural Heritage. The Castle of Roccarainola, a Case Study
This paper offers a detailed exploration of significant advances in the field of studies aimed at preserving and making accessible virtual experiences related to the Cultural Heritage of small urban centers.Through the use of the latest digital methodologies for virtual tours, the fundamental importance of the use of equirectangular imagery as a primary tool in the creation of virtual itineraries is highlighted, thus enabling an in-depth understanding and appreciation of the historical legacy represented by the majestic castle of Roccarainola. The evolution of visual recording techniques over time, from the earliest handpainted panoramas to monochrome panoramic photographs and, more recently, to high-resolution equirectangular images, illustrates the surprising path and increasing attention paid to digital preservation of Cultural Heritage. Analog panoramic images, although limited compared to the quality and accuracy of today's digital images, have considerable documentary value, offering a unique glimpse into the past and allowing interesting comparisons with contemporary representations. So, this study focuses on the implementation of innovative techniques for the documentation and enjoyment of cultural heritage, effectively demonstrating how high-quality visual representation plays a crucial role in making tangible, through immersive virtual environments, the cognitive and appreciative pathways related to this important historical record
During Lucrezia Borgia’s time in Ferrara, forms of princely justice emerged alongside the discretionary ones of “gracious” concessions. The institutionalization of ‘justice’ pronouncements was achieved through the establishment of a Consilium iustitiae by Duke Borso in 1453, following the example of other princedoms such as Milan and Mantua. This princely tribunal intertwined its functions with the judicial ones outlined in Ferrara’s municipal statute. At the same time, the practice of presenting and receiving petitions for ‘graces’ was codified, aimed at granting discretionary measures by the Duke, which Lucrezia also had the opportunity to exercise when her husband Alfonso was absent.
The dialogue between the lawyer and the client is not a mere construct of words, but a bridge between two often distant worlds: the legal one, an incoherent set of incoherently declined rules and that of the client, characterized by emotions and fears. In the context of this relationship, the communication of the risk of suffering prejudicial consequences from a personal and financial perspective cannot be limited to the sole transmission of legal notions to the client, but requires that the lawyer, in compliance with the principles of professional ethics, effectively knows how to communicate to the client the elements that allow him to make a considered and, hopefully, the best possible choice.
Environmental issues have been a significant part of public and private debate for years. In the production sectors, some companies adopt a series of sustainable practices in order to reconcile new ethical values with economic activities, communicating their CSR (« Corporate Social Responsibility ») which also involves an environmental dimension. It also aims to attract involving consumers who, in the wake of Neolocalism, are looking for local, authentic and traditional products. The concept of “sustainable gastronomy” fits into this context. Based on an analysis of digital and environmental discourse, this study explores sustainable communication on the Websites of French and Italian restaurants awarded with a Green Star and with another Michelin star such as 1 Star, Bib Gourmand or Selected Restaurants. Using a qualitative-quantitative and comparative French-Italian approach, we analyse linguistic choices and discursive strategies in order to understand where gastronomic restaurants stand between global and local, between tradition and innovation, dichotomies already existing in the culinary field but which have been relaunched in the age of globalisation.
This study intends to apply a pluridisciplinary approach crossing psycholinguistics and gender studies to the teaching/learning of FOS in a university setting, focusing in particular on the explicit and systematic teaching of the lexicon (Grossman 2011, Tremblay and Polguère 2014, Frassi 2018, Tremblay and Anctil 2020, Sardier 2021) of tourism and gastronomy, associated with the gender lexicon. The study also looks at the transcultural reflection or metaphorical gastronomic migrations from L2 to L1 and vice versa that the lexical/terminological units imply during the learning process. A teaching unit was designed for this purpose, entitled Tourism, gastronomy and gender: a dialogue, the content and activities of which were adapted to the dual need to prepare learners for entry into the professional sphere and to raise their awareness of the gender issues arising in the fields of tourism and gastronomy. The experiment was aimed at Italian-speaking students in the second year of a degree course in Turismo, Territori e Imprese at the University of Palermo. Noun juxtaposition for predication, possession, and conjunction: Beyond ambiguity avoidance
This paper asks whether ambiguity avoidance influences the use of certain linguistic forms, using noun juxtaposition as a case study. Noun juxtaposition is one of the strategies for expressing predication, possession, and conjunction, and is widely used across the world’s languages. Despite its extensive use, few studies have investigated noun juxtaposition cross-linguistically. One notable exception is Frajzyngier et al. (2002), who argue that the use of noun juxtaposition is constrained within a single language due to ambiguity avoidance. However, counterexamples to this hypothesis exist. This study points out that their sample is skewed towards African languages, and thus, their findings likely reflect African areal patterns. From this perspective, a comprehensive cross-linguistic examination of noun juxtaposition is still lacking. Therefore, based on a balanced 72-language sample, this paper explores which functions tend to be expressed by noun juxtaposition, whether there are any areal patterns concerning its use, and whether its use is constrained by ambiguity. Since noun juxtaposition is, by definition, the most efficient strategy for these three functions in terms of formal complexity, the research conducted in this study contributes to discussions on whether ambiguity or efficiency is more important for the use of certain linguistic forms. Based on the empirical findings, this study suggests that efficiency plays a more important role than ambiguity
