The re-actualization of Makidhipuh Wayang movement as immaterial culture in Garin Nugroho’s film “Setan Jawa”
“Setan Jawa” (2016) by Garin Nugroho is a silent black and white film with orchestral cinematic arrangements by Rahayu Supanggah. Taking up the story of Java in the early 20th century, this film blends several artistic mediums. "Movement" takes on significance as a communication tool in this film, which incorporates dance and shadow puppets to convey Javanese cultural meaning through the movement's visual code. One type of semiosis that is transferred from the movement of shadow puppets is the visual code of movement. Applying a case study methodology bolstered by visual data analysis through “Setan Jawa” documentation and making reference to the movement classification system for shadow puppets derived from Roger Long’s research (1979), the results of this study show a semiosis of movement that imaginatively transposes the movements of puppets, including makidhipuh, in the film “Setan Jawa”. The way that the actors in this film incorporate makidhipuh movements into their body language highlights how crucial it is for different signs to work together as a medium to promote visual cultural literacy in the global age.
Comparative study of the digital design status of cultural heritage on China’s Grand Canal and Europe’s Danube river
This paper conducts a comparative analysis of the digital design status of cultural heritage in two historically significant waterways: the Grand Canal in China and the Danube River in Central Europe. It investigates the current state of digitalization, the technological methods employed in digital design, and the forms of revitalization. Through a comprehensive comparative analysis, the study emphasizes key distinctions in sustainable concepts, technological applications, experience design, and social management service design. Furthermore, it identifies common features and shared challenges faced in both waterway regions. This research offers valuable insights into the digital preservation and activation of cultural heritage in these vital waterways, promoting cultural exchange between China and Europe and enhancing the global renewal of cultural heritage in ancient river basins.
HBIM reconstruction in cultural heritage: the case study of the Casina Cenci Giustiniani, Rome
This paper explores the application of Heritage/Historical Building Information Modelling (HBIM) as a transformative tool for the restoration and management of historical structures focusing on the case study of Casina Cenci Giustiniani in Rome. HBIM is an extension of Building Information Modelling (BIM) specifically designed for the documentation, management, and conservation of historic and heritage buildings, utilizing parametric 3D models enriched with both geometric and historical data. HBIM enables the integration of detailed survey data and archival research to create intelligent digital representations that support restoration, maintenance, and analysis of existing architectural heritage. The HBIM methodology is especially pertinent for architectural heritage, where a thorough and multifaceted understanding of the asset is indispensable for any restoration and conservation strategy. The implementation of HBIM facilitates the systematic organization of relevant data, supporting both the documentation phase and subsequent inspection and diagnostic tasks. The methodological process used in this paper involved a scan-to-BIM strategy to reconstruct the three-dimensional model of the building from oriented images, minimizing labour-intensive and error-prone manual operations. This has enabled the creation of an accurate as-built model that preserves critical information regarding external dimensions, material compositions, deformations, and structural conditions. The resulting digital model serves as a comprehensive repository, hosting and embedding multiple data sets that collectively constitute a robust informational framework for future conservation efforts.

The transformation of house orientation following islamization and independence in Soppeng Regency: a study of culture and local identity
This study aims to analyse the transformation of the orientation of traditional Bugis houses in Soppeng Regency in the context of Islamization and modernization after independence. Traditional Bugis houses reflect deep cultural values, religion, and local identity. However, the influence of Islamization in the 16th century and modernization policies after Indonesian independence caused significant changes in the orientation of the houses. The research method used is a qualitative approach, including literature studies, field observations in four settlement locations (two old settlements and two new settlements), in-depth interviews, architectural analysis, and a thematic analysis of the data. The old settlements analysed are Jampuserenge Village and Madello Village, while the new settlements include Bulue Village and Laringgi Village. Data were collected on the orientation of houses towards the Qibla spatial patterns, and adjustments to government policies. The results of the study show that old settlements still maintain the orientation of houses towards the Qibla as a reflection of religious values, although there are adaptations to modernization through the addition of facades to make them appear to face the road. In contrast, new settlements prioritize the orientation of houses facing the road according to the spatial planning policy implemented in the 1970s. These changes reflect the Bugis people’s ability to balance traditional values and the demands of modernity. Modifications such as the addition of facades are a creative strategy in maintaining cultural and religious identity amidst social change. This study provides insight into how the Bugis people adapt to external influences while maintaining their cultural heritage, which is relevant in understanding the dynamics of traditional culture and architecture in a modern context.
The Possibility of an Island: Cold War Berlin as Charged Void, Landscape, and Mirage
This paper is an attempt to provide an alternative and enriched genealogy of the utopian masterplan for Cold War era Berlin titled “The City in the City: Berlin, the Green Archipelago,” which the German architect Oswald Mathias Ungers developed in the latter half of the 1970s. This highly speculative project concerned with Berlin’s charged voids is dissected through a series of micro-histo[1]ries relative to the precedents that inform its fragmentary nature. Rather than a singularity or the product of a mastermind aided by disciples, as it has thus far been approached in the historiography of architecture, I shall position it as a centerpiece in a series of projects that unveil a shared repertory of formal operations and intellectual concerns. In tandem, the paper provides a lexicon for the term fragment as it has been perceived, theorized, and deployed in this sociopolitical and historical context, namely six distinct definitions, effects, and states of the fragment - fractures, ruins, debris, lacunae, elements, and the notion of the unfinished. Through this scope, I consider the preoccupation with formal disjunction between parts and whole in architectural discourse during the second half of the twentieth century, particularly as it relates to the experience and design of the city. The latter, I argue, is informed by a critical stance to the technophiliac and abstrac[1]tionist tendencies of Modern architecture and a swerve towards a renewed interest in history and the palimpsestic quality of the urban tissue in the aftermath of World War II
Diversità architettonica nelle chiese cattoliche della Lituania post-sovietica (1988–91)
This paper examines the architectural diversity in Catholic churches in Lithuania during the postSoviet transition period following five decades of occupations that disrupted the church-building tradition: the first Soviet occupation (1940-41), the Nazi German occupation (1941-44), and the second Soviet occupation (1944-90). For five decades, the construction of Catholic churches was forbidden under the totalitarian regime, and the attempts by the faithful to organise were impossible until Perestroika. Changing political dynamics after 1988 facilitated the emergence of new churches (including chapels and monasteries), with over one hundred constructed in the subsequent three decades of Lithuania’s independence. This research, based on different types of sources — archival material from the Archive of the Curia of the Vilnius Archdiocese and Soviet governmental agencies, empirical data, and oral histories with architects and priests — delves into the efforts to establish new churches within religious communities and the development of new ecclesiastical architecture during the transitional period in post-Soviet Lithuania. Key areas of investigation include the origins of innovative architectural styles, the diverse inspirations of architects, and preferences in architectural language. Through analysing three case studies, the paper sheds light on the specific challenges and provides valuable insights into Lithuanian ecclesiastical architecture.
In a context of global disenchantment, ecological crisis, and neoliberal exhaustion, contemporary narratives must rethink ways of inhabiting the world beyond environmental catastrophe. This essay offers a preliminary and speculative approach to Mónica Ojeda’s Chamanes eléctricos en la fiesta del sol(2024), raising questions and associations derived from the reading. The central hypothesis posits that the novel, by evoking Amerindian cosmologies and experimenting with the shamanic and the psychedelic, articulates symbolic resistance to capitalist realism and imagines alternative communities from the Andes, where collective singing reconfigures bonds and possible futures.
This study analyses how children switch between varieties of Italian during classroom interaction, based on video recordings from third-grade classes in four Lazio schools (Colleferro, Pomezia, Valmontone, Frosinone). It examines the role and communicative functions of these shifts in relation to children’s sociolinguistic competence. By observing how students use different forms depending on context, interlocutor, and activity, the research explores intentional variation to achieve interactional goals. The theoretical framework combines sociolinguistic and conversational approaches, focusing on style-shifting within the broader concept of code choice and comparing it with code-switching. The second part presents the data by variation type and classroom setting, classified by activity, topic, interlocutor, direction and scope of style-shifting, and communicative intention.
During an uprising against organised crime in Cherán (Michoacán, México), the village’s women took the streets and set up hundreds of collective kitchens called “fogatas”. According to the specialised literature, these women would have taken as a model the home kitchen, breaking with the separation between the domestic and the public space. In this paper I defend an alternative reading, based on fourteen months of fieldwork. Far from constituting a break, these women organized at that time in the same way they do usually during their traditional fiestas.
