This paper takes as its theme the delicate – and much under-investigated – transition phase to adulthood of unaccompanied foreign minors, broadening its gaze to the European context. After sketching the complexity of the phenomenon and outlining its essential pedagogical relevance, a systematic scoping review is presented to identify cross-cutting and recurring elements – such as labour market placement, legal status, educational pathways, and social support networks – found in the literature. What emerges, both in terms of quantity and research data, is quite modest and indicates the need for the development of this crucial area of inquiry.
This article presents some results of qualitative research involving unaccompanied foreign minors and educational staff employed in second reception facilities in the Bologna area and province in 2023. While in its broader purpose the research intended to investigate the plurality of aspects of the work implemented in the reception communities of the integration and reception system (SAI), from the point of view of coordinators and operators and of the minors, this paper focuses on the implementation of the individualized education plan (PEI) in the process of taking charge of the special educational needs of this particular group of minors. Through the words of the educational staff interviewed, we intend to investigate potential and critical issues in the use of this tool, emphasizing the importance of this area of reflection for pedagogical sciences, particularly from an intercultural perspective.
The essay focuses on the correspondence exchanged, from 1781 to 1788, between Girolamo Tiraboschi, librarian of the Duke of Modena, and Carlo Carlini, the first custodian of the Royal Library of Brera. The 51 preserved missives constitute a piece, still virtually unpublished, of the dense information network that connected the farthest outposts of the Respublica litteraria to Tiraboschi’s desk. What emerges from the correspondence is a relationship that was far from being purely and strictly work-related, having quickly become friendly: in the letters, indeed, one finds both erudite information, book exchange agreements, requests for bibliographic checks, and numerous notes relating to the more private sphere. The epistolary thus provides a vivid insight into the professional and intellectual activities of the two correspondents, as well as a more three-dimensional reconstruction of their personalities.

In Michele Mari’s work, self-narration takes shape through an oblique and implicit form of autobiographism, in which the authorial presence tends to remain elusive through various strategies of dissimulation. The essay examines how such procedures operate even in texts of stronger autobiographical intensity, such as Filologia dell’anfibio and Rondini sul filo. The study begins with a stylistic and rhetorical analysis with the aim of interpreting the hyper-literariness of Filologia dell’anfibio as a screen that filters the memorial substance. The discussion then moves on to Rondini sul filo, highlighting Mari’s ventriloquial appropriation of Céline’s style and the marked presence of the supernatural. Both features are interpreted as strategies of concealment, deliberately employed to obscure and displace the authorial self.
This article investigates on one hand the interrelationship between simplification, the need for comprehensibility and the communication goals pursued by the respective senders, and on the other, those between intralingual translation and (technical) writing. Special attention is paid to recipient-oriented linguistic design in relation to multimodal and textual aspects. The analysis focuses mainly on how, and for which target audiences, German energy discourse addresses the topic pertaining to the importance of hydrogen for energy transition – a topic which is both technically complex and socio-politically and economically relevant. For this purpose, I have collected a corpus that combines online texts of selected actors who are active in the energy sector or who are supposed to facilitate the energy transition. The focus is on the different linguistic, visual and textual strategies and means employed to simplify the given complexity in such a way that the relevant target groups, which range from citizens interested in the topic to active or potential customers and people with cognitive impairments, can understand the content according to the broadcaster's intentions. In this respect, a comparison between messages by the same actor in both standard language and easy language proves to be particularly illuminating. This article investigates on one hand the interrelationship between simplification, the need for comprehensibility and the communication goals pursued by the respective senders, and on the other, those between intralingual translation and (technical) writing. Interactions verbales en contexte numérique médical: ajustements discursifs
This contribution analyses verbal interactions between diabetic patients and between healthcare professionals and patients, in a context of written electronic communication. Our socio-discursive and pragmatic approach involves examining exchanges in social networks in which patients, relatives and carers share their peri-medical culture, as do healthcare workers engaged in therapeutic education. We focus here on the negotiation of meaning and the construction of reference between these different actors; more specifically, we analyse, on the one hand, cases of conversational misunderstanding and non-understanding and, on the other hand, the discursive strategies implemented with the aim of explaining some complex disciplinary content, most often conveyed by scientific or medical terms, sometimes in a foreign language. Certain socio-discursive practices are particularly relevant, such as the various forms of discursive ergonomics: reformulations, translations, reorganisation of content, and so on. These are situated between the two principles of approximation and explicitness. We emphasise that these exchanges constitute a dialogical appropriation of knowledge, in other words a form of peer learning. This contribution analyses verbal interactions between diabetic patients and between healthcare professionals and patients, in a context of written electronic communication. Let Us Talk About Sugar
This article explores the idea of simplicity from three different angles: translate-simplify, write-simplify and teach-simplify. It is a practice-based rather than desk-top research. One specific tutorial is chosen to illustrate the pedagogy adopted on the subject which blends translation studies and comparative literature. The title of this presentation has been borrowed from a popular brochure Your Health Your Pharmacy (2022). One of its articles advertises the replacement or reduction of sugar by maple syrup in people’s daily intakes. This text is used in my practical translation classes at UCL where I teach technical, scientific and medical translation modules to Master students who specialise in translation from English into Russian. The popular style of this publication is chosen to discuss the issues of simplicity and clarity in translation. For example, examining the idea of maple syrup as an attractive, all-natural sugar alternative is a good start for developing the students’ understanding of topics related to language for specific purposes and various readerships. Our closer look at the source text has provided unexpected results which lead to an unusual conclusion that “Perhaps the All-There-Is is not all there is” (Popova, 2014). This gives me an opportunity to talk about The Edge of the Sky: All You Need to Know About the All- There-Is (2014). The story is written by Roberto Trotta, my former colleague from Imperial College London. It exemplifies and highlights important issues in today’s popular semi-specialised writing, in particular the use of the 1,000 most common English words without compromising on clarity and depth of scientific descriptions related to astronomy and cosmology. Trotta’s methodology is further examined in the field of translation. The focus is on checking the students’ translation of Let’s Talk About Sugar (2022) in which the key role of popular terminology is underlined. This article explores the idea of simplicity from three different angles: translate-simplify, write-simplify and teach-simplify.
