    Maximizing the sustainable use of pomegranate, orange, and banana peel wastes as natural antioxidant resources

    One way to sustainably use environmental resources is the valorization of industry by-products. In the present study, seven phenolic compounds: p-coumaric acid, catechin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, punicalagin (A+B mixture), and gallic acid, were quantified using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) in extracts obtained from orange (OR), banana (BN) and pomegranate (PG) peels derived from juicing by-products. Additionally, the antioxidant capacity of the peel extracts and the total phenolic content (TPC) were determined. All samples were extracted with 50% aqueous ethanol using three different solid-to-solvent ratios: 1 g dry peel (DP)/40 mL solvent (OR-40, BN-40, PG-40), 1 g DP/50 mL solvent (OR-50, BN-50, PG-50), and 1 g DP/60 mL solvent (OR-60, BN-60, PG-60). According to the results, the highest antioxidant capacity was detected in PG-60, with a value of 0.62±0.060 mmol Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TAE)/g DP. Regarding TPC, the Folin–Ciocalteu assay revealed the highest values for OR peel in the OR-40 (42±2.9 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g DP), for BN peel in BN-40 (51±2.5 mg GAE/g DP), and for PG peel in the PG-60 (380±19 mg GAE/g DP). These findings highlight ways to optimize the potential of fruit peel waste as a promising, low-cost resource of bioactive compounds, supporting sustainable practices and contributing to the development of value-added products in the framework of a circular economy

    International consensus has not yet been reached on how to regulate digital platform work. Various solutions have been implemented, but Mexico’s 2024 reform to the labour law stands out for recognizing labour relations under this form of employment, however “flexibilized” to adapt to the conditions of new forms of working arrangements in the digital economy. This article explains the guiding principles of this relationship (effectively worked hours and an income equal to or higher than the national minimum wage), the particularities to regulate it, the employer’s organizational and disciplinary power, and worker rights. This work also notes legal contradictions and underlines certain issues to access labour-related benefits.Aún no se ha alcanzado un consenso internacional sobre cómo regular el trabajo en las plataformas digitales. Se han implementado diversas soluciones, pero la reforma de la legislación laboral mexicana de 2024 destaca por reconocer las relaciones laborales en esta forma de empleo, aunque «flexibilizadas», para adaptarse a las condiciones de las nuevas formas de trabajo de la economía digital. Este artículo explica los principios que rigen esta relación laboral (horas efectivamente trabajadas y un ingreso igual o superior al salario mínimo nacional), las particularidades para su regulación, el poder organizativo y disciplinario del empleador, y los derechos de los trabajadores. El trabajo también señala contradicciones legales y subraya ciertas cuestiones para acceder a los beneficios laborales.Non esiste un consenso internazionale su come regolamentare il lavoro sulle piattaforme digitali. L'articolo illustra i principi guida di questo rapporto di lavoro (ore effettivamente lavorate e un reddito pari o superiore al salario minimo nazionale), le particolarità della sua regolamentazione, il potere organizzativo e disciplinare del datore di lavoro e i diritti dei lavoratori.     In 1702 Florentine mathematician and engineer Vincenzo Viviani (1622-1703) signed the end of a 234-page manuscript that listed nearly 2000 titles of works in his library. The material spanned manuscripts, incunables, and print volumes published through 1702. Since Viviani had fashioned himself as the final student of Galileo Galilei (1564-1643), the manuscript was used in the late-nineteenth century as a source for re-identifying editions of books in Galileo’s library. Using the manuscript, the digital library of Viviani’s collection created by the Museo Galileo in 2021, and a tabularized edition of the manuscript, this article provides an overview of the library and explores the strengths of each type of source for learning more about Viviani’s books and for understanding him as both an intellectual and bibliophile. The authors argue that the comparative approach offers a way to access features of the collection that are not revealed by any representation in isolation, and we advocate for future web-based projects to integrate digital surrogates of the primary source material and make the underlying data available to facilitate this kind of research.Nel 1702 il matematico e ingegnere fiorentino Vincenzo Viviani (1622-1703) firmò le ultime righe di un manoscritto di 234 pagine nelle quali si elencavano i titoli di quasi 2.000 opere nella sua biblioteca personale. Il materiale comprendeva manoscritti, incunaboli e volumi a stampa pubblicati fino al 1702. Dato che Viviani si presentò come l’ultimo discepolo di Galileo Galilei (1564-1643), il suo manoscritto fu consultato successivamente come fonte per identificare le edizioni dei libri presenti nella biblioteca di Galileo. Attraverso l’analisi del mano scritto, della biblioteca digitale della collezione libraria di Viviani creata dal Museo Galileo nel 2021 e di un’edizione del manoscritto presentata in forma tabulare, questo articolo offre una sintesi della biblioteca del discente galileiano e, in modo comparativo, esplora i punti di forza di ciascun tipo di fonte per approfondire la conoscenza dei libri di Viviani e per comprendere meglio questa figura nel ruolo di intellettuale e bibliofilo. Da queste premesse si vuole mostrare come l’approccio comparativo permetta di cogliere attributi e aspetti della biblioteca di Viviani che, altrimenti, non emergerebbero dalle singole rappresentazioni della stessa prese isolatamente. Infine viene uspicata, per i futuri progetti analoghi a quello presentato, l’integrazione tra l’oggetto digitale della fonte primaria e i relativi dati costitutivi, i quali devono essere resi accessibili e disponibili

    Epidemiology and clinical aspects of edible mushroom-related paediatric poisonings in Italy: 10-year retrospective study

    Intoxications caused by mushrooms (mycetisms) account for only 2% of the total toxicological consultations that the Milan Poison Control Centre receives and manages every year, but they are certainly the most challenging, both because they are potentially very dangerous and for the simultaneous involvement of multiple subjects, especially when patients are of paediatric age. The present retrospective study aims to analyse epidemiological data and the clinical course of edible mushroom poisonings in Italy. Only intoxications caused by edible mushrooms in paediatric patients were selected. Age information was missing for patients involved in collective exposures, so it is noticeable that the collected data are only a minority of real cases. The average number of vitamins, proteins and mineral salts in mushrooms is negligible, from a nutritional point of view; therefore, the results of our study show that it is preferable to avoid their consumption in children. In order to have more accurate data on the extent of mushroom-related problems in children, a nationwide homogeneous statistical survey is needed

    Value Mapping as a Pedagogical Tool to Understand Complex Urban and Landscape Challenges

    The current work explores value mapping as a pedagogical tool to gain a better understanding of the role of values in addressing sustainability challenges and their implications across scales, disciplines, and time. First, we introduce a Master-level course where students use the city as a learning ecosystem and engage with situated creative practices tackling global sustainability challenges at a local scale. Then we discuss the developed value maps. It can be concluded that the value mapping process not only proved instrumental in offering valuable insights and contextual understanding into the intricate, and sometimes conflicting, values identified, but also fostered students’ critical thinking skills, allowing them to identify potential areas of discord among stakeholders. The collaborative mapping approach, guided by shared values and facilitated by design expertise, holds the potential to overcome challenges, create a thriving ecosystem, and ensure a future where ecological well-being, shared responsibility, and informed decision-making go hand in hand

    Nowadays, climate change shows irreversible consequences for the well-being of humanity, territories, and resources. The city of Bologna (Italy) is facing environmental, societal, and digital challenges that are currently featured in urban spaces worldwide: air pollution and intense urban mobility, due to anthropic activities and ever-increasing urbanization. To tackle these issues, the H2020 I-CHANGE project “Individual Change of HAbits Needed for Green European transition” aims to illustrate the possibility of collective behavioral change by engaging civil society in citizen science initiatives (Goudeseune et al., 2020; Vohland, 2021). Emphasizing climate change awareness and sustainable lifestyles, the research prioritizes openness, accessibility, and participatory knowledge production. Investigating cartographic maps’ role in citizen science, the study explores behavioral shifts towards sustainability. This contribution proposes the “Mani in Mappa!” (Hands on maps) initiative as a potential citizen science activity that involves maps as a dynamic tool for scientific research, education, and participation. The scientific component involves applying the concept of citizen science, engaging people in the shared collection and processing of data on Bologna’s mobility system. The educational dimension is expressed through serious games, transforming gaming into a tool for message transmission, information exchange, and training. Finally, participation is facilitated by using geographic information systems for public involvement. This multidimensional approach aims to enhance active citizen awareness in sustainable urban mobility and to promote behavioral change to sustainable mobility

    Counter-Mapping Spatial Footprint and Economic Activity of the Logistics Complex in the Netherlands

    The growing footprint and the economic importance of the logistics complex has become an urgent planning topic on policy agendas in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands and its neighboring countries. The rise of the XXL warehouse is an important element in this discourse. The discourse typically features many different growth figures and maps on a highly aggregated level, whereas the source data are often not made available. Policymakers and researchers, however, need a more detailed comprehensive overview to make adequate decisions, analyze developments over time, and communicate with the broader public. This paper presents the counter-mapping process of compiling, validating, and sharing such a cartographic overview, including different types and size classes of distribution centers (DCs). It discusses several methodological and practical obstacles, as well as the use of an interactive map and a dashboard to inform a broader public, and the representation of the time dimension. Furthermore, it discusses insights of the open-access cartography of the logistics complex that challenge the common narratives outlined by the market and government, and it provides recommendations for the updating and improvement of the dataset and visualization
