    No full text
This study focuses on a specific element in the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe: the bloodstained, torn veil that triggers the tragic misunderstanding, leading to the protagonists’ double suicide. Despite its central narrative role, this thematic object has remained largely unexplored among the numerous studies on the medieval tradition of the myth. The paper first analyses the narrative function of the veil, highlighting symbolic implications such as the motif of the double, false death, and the antinomy between love and death. It then examines various medieval adaptations of the myth, particularly their attempts to reinterpret Thisbe’s veil as a symbol of lust and sin. However, as many scholars have noted, the myth was often read through Christian and Christological lenses. This perspective allows for a comparison with two biblical passages – from the Gospel of Mark and Song of Songs – which offer intriguing and unexpected insights into the imagery of a torn veil, a unique object that does not appear elsewhere in the Bible.

We present some characterizations of the harmonic pseudospheres in terms of the so called Kuran's functions and of the single-layer potentials. Our characterizations apply to solid, harmonically stable domains.

It is enough to skim the very first pages of the volume Lumières de l’Utopie to touch upon the connections, profound even if not completely explicit, that link Bronislaw Baczko’s historiography to that great process of methodological renewal of historical studies that today we are accustomed to call the «linguistic turn». This paper aims precisely at delving into this specific aspect of the Polish historian’s work, dwelling in particular on the contribution that his view of the history of modern “utopian discourse” offered to a deeper and more conscious understanding of the conflicting events of European modernization.È sufficiente scorrere le primissime pagine del volume Lumières de l’Utopie per toccare con mano i nessi, profondi anche se non del tutto esplicitati, che legano la storiografia di Bronislaw Baczko a quel grande processo di rinnovamento metodologico degli studi storici che oggi siamo abituati a definire «linguistic turn».

    No full text
Despite the fact that the TV series "The Handmaid’s Tale" has been widely researched, most studies have addressed aspects like narrative, feminism, violence against women or visual and compositional elements, such as the use of light and the symbolism of colour. However, there is still a dearth of scholarly works focusing on the analysis of the series’ staging and art direction. Accordingly, a comprehensive enquiry is performed here into one such aspect, namely, the windows appearing in the first season of the series. The aim is to verify the aesthetic and staging resources used when windows appear on screen. Additionally, the intention is to determine the kind of windows that stand out because of their symbolism and which are also in keeping with the core concept of the first season of the series. A specially designed analytical tool is employed to examine three of the most relevant windows – those of June/Offred’s bedroom, Commander Fred’s study and Serena’s bedroom – arriving at the conclusion that they are interwoven in both the plot and the characters at a narrative and symbolic level.

Originalism and Non-Originalism as Legal Hermeneutics

    No full text
One of the hermeneutic elements that are decisive in the development of legislative acts and judicial decisions is the interpretation of the Constitution, the pillar of the legal system. In the United States, the debate on the interpretation of the Constitution by the Supreme Court has become a classic of constitutional law and, therefore, affects reflection on legal hermeneutics. This paper examines originalist and non-originalist approaches to constitutional interpretation and explores how political positions shape hermeneutic analysis, even in continental European legal systems, and specifically in the Spanish one

Selective Participation: Alvar and Elissa Aalto’s Sacred Architecture in Riola di Vergato

This paper interrogates the architecture of Santa Maria Assunta in Riola di Vergato (1965-1980) with respect to Bolognese twentieth-century religious discourse on urbanisation and the city. The paper discusses the key issues which framed the inception, development, construction and reception of Santa Maria Assunta, designed by Finnish modernists Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) and Elissa Aalto (1922-1994) and their associates. The practice’s only Catholic church, Santa Maria Assunta was a direct product of Cardinal Giacomo Lercaro’s (1891-1976) ambitious church-building program, implemented in response to the scarcity of religious space in rapidly urbanising Bologna. The paper argues that Alvar and Elissa Aalto selectively accepted, adapted and appropriated ideas promoted by the Bolognese church-building program in their design of Santa Maria Assunta. On the one hand, working under the guidance of local figures, especially Cardinal Lercaro, the Aaltos sought to ensure that their design adhered to contemporaneous urban and religious ideals. On the other hand, the Aaltos remained fundamentally sceptical of the ambitions set out by post-war programs of religious renewal, especially those rooted in the ideal of ‘participation’, which manifest in reformed liturgical guidelines and the integration of church buildings into urban and suburban parochial complexes. The realised design of Santa Maria Assunta embodies the tension inherent in the Aaltos’ selective adoption of Bolognese ideals: some elements of the design are products of the broader discourse on the city and the Church institution’s role therein, whereas others communicate an opposition to reformist ideals which the Aaltos viewed with disfavour

Giacomo Lercaro, an Architect among Architects? The Scientific Planning of the “Seconda Bologna” between the 1950s and 1960s.

    No full text
Giacomo Lercaro’s arrival in Bologna in the spring of 1952 and his appointment as cardinal the following year opened a 15-year period in which the Emilian city was at the center of important initiatives that gained notoriety both nationally and internationally. With regard to urban and architectural issues, Cardinal Lercaro was able to use method and planning to set up a meticulous plan that in about 15 years led to the construction of many parish centers and churches. These places of worship, characterized by a highly modern language that until that moment had only very few similar examples in Italy, became new points of reference for the neighborhoods in which they arose, helping to resolve some of the social and aggregative as well as ecumenical problems that characterized those suburbs. The design of those churches was entrusted not only to designers of great fame such as Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Pier Luigi Nervi but also to young architects such as Giuseppe Trebbi or Glauco Gresleri that Lercaro had the intuition to aggregate in a group (Ufficio Nuove Chiese) called to carry out other functions as well. Also important and not to be underestimated were the links created in other European contexts generating a dense network of exchanges and relationships that contributed to increasing the notoriety of Lercaro and the city of Bologna, the object of analysis and a debate that is still current today

Graphic Studies on the Built Heritage, a Critical Review. Technical Advances VS Traditional Studies

    No full text
Research on the built heritage should periodically review the good practices to be used in surveying theories and practices. Written and graphic precedents provide a valuable knowledge of historical buildings built over centuries. Previous surveys must be checked through an exhaustive fieldwork because of their lack of accuracy and reliability, that results from the fact that ancient methodologies are based on direct measuring. Therefore, old datasets must be compared with later outcomes obtained with modern photogrammetric or scanning techniques. Accordingly, our teaching strategies must promote a critical and responsible use of technologies. Moreover, graphic information sources such as perspectives, photographs, and ancient cartography can be used to supplement the information of the building provided by other methodologies. The Monastery of El Escorial is a paradigmatic case study because of the large amount of written and graphic information that is preserved, that includes the original 16th century traces and drawings, together with surveys dating back to the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries

    No full text
This article proposes to address the problem of risk and the consequent decisive response by referring to the deliberative genre in the opening of the Decameron, inspired by Aristotle, and more specifically to Pampinea’s speech. The emergency situation caused by the plague means that, in a given context, it is the word as an instrument of understanding and coexistence and the reference to unwritten but human laws that suggest the formation of the brigade and the deliberation regarding the course of action. Pampinea’s words outline the argumentative mechanisms underlying the creation of the Decameron and the possibility in being of facing risk by following the path of honest living. The Decameron itself is a means to ensure salvation in a context of enormous ethical crisis and total and immense risk.
