The “Bofills båge” in Stockholm. Nordic Peculiarities of a Postmodern Crescent
The facts about the redevelopment of the area formerly occupied by the railway tracks and the train station in the centre of the island of Södermalm in Stockholm began in 1981 with the competition for a new residential area. From the 125 projects evaluated by the jury, no winner was found, so the “Project group” coordinated by architect Jan Inghe-Hagström, who led the Stockholm City Planning Department at the time, implemented the best ideas in the final master plan Områdseplan84 (Area Plan84). The large area was subdivided into 14 districts entrusted to cooperatives and construction companies, including HSB, which was assigned the area to which a crescent was to be built and included a park.
The start of construction in 1989 was followed by two years of building work, which resulted in Stockholm's first crescent characterised by an extremely reduced decorative apparatus compared to Bofill's similar residential complexes in France in particular. The demands of the client and the construction company, in view of the Nordic context historically reluctant to insert redundant decorative devices, led Bofill to make a number of changes to the first version of the project, leading to the final solution inaugurated in 1992. Although the subject of conflicting assessments, the ‘Bofill båge’ is today one of Stockholm's most emblematic and recognisable architectures, where it stands out for its elegance and essentiality, combining traits of classical architectural language and tradition with the functional requirements of the north
The Omega Project: Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni’s Last Lesson on Architecture and the City
The Omega Centre represents a remarkable yet largely overlooked achievement by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. Situated directly on Milan’s Piazza Duomo, the project distinguished itself amid the contemporary proliferation of shops and showrooms that emerged in the final years of Italy’s economic boom, thanks to the originality of its spatial and material solutions. In this sense, the Omega Centre stands as one of the Castiglioni brothers’ most refined architectural works–and, notably, the last they completed together.
Despite the attention it initially drew from critics both in Italy and abroad, the Omega Centre has since remained on the margins of scholarly interest, overshadowed by the Castiglionis’ celebrated contributions to industrial design. Its commercial nature and eventual dismantling in the 1980s may have further contributed to its neglect, limiting both critical and scholarly engagement with the project. Yet the significance of the Omega Centre lies precisely in its ability to reflect the urban context it inhabits. It embodies a combination of interpretation and innovation, where materials and form engage in an open and synergistic dialogue – becoming, in turn, a lens through which to read the city itself.
Drawing on extensive archival research and previously unpublished materials from collections in Italy, Switzerland, and Japan, this paper aims to address that historiographical gap by critically reconstructing both the Castiglioni brothers’ design process and the building’s relationship with the city of Milan. The analysis unfolds across multiple scales – from the urban setting of Piazza Duomo to the detailed design of interiors and objects, and back again – offering a coherent narrative that links object-scale innovation with urban meaning. Ultimately, the paper delivers a compelling lesson on the responsibility of commercial architecture – and of architecture as a whole – in shaping and interpreting the contemporary city, standing as the final statement to the Castiglioni brothers’ enduring legacy
Critical Notes on Mapping the Mobility of Agricultural Workers in the Province of Ferrara: the (Ethical) Importance of Opacity
This article presents an on-going research project developed by the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and AMI Ferrara regarding home-work mobility patterns in local agro-industrial production. By combining quantitative and qualitative research tools (i.e. literature review, surveys, interviews, GIS-mapping), this research originally aimed to research habits, needs, and propensity to change of agricultural workers in the area in relation to home-work mobility. The investigation therefore necessarily has to confront “caporalato”. Bearing in mind existing power relations and the inherent opacity of dynamics in agricultural work, we highlight the difficulties encountered by the mapping campaign, as well as the dangers of its instrumentalization when addressing such work relations. By emphasizing the tendency of agricultural day-labourers to defy localization, we aim at departing from this lack (or absence) of information to suggest the relevance of a critical approach to mapping in contemporary racial capitalism. The paper finally proposes substantial theoretical frameworks, extensive field research and investigative campaigns on-the-ground in contrast to the strictly vertical, top-down and technocratic approach of traditional mapping, in order to answer to mobility habits and needs of agricultural workers
A step towards a new redistribution model? Implementing an Adequate Minimum Wage Directive in Poland
This article aims to discuss the process of transposing Directive (EU) 2022/2041 of the European Parliament and of the Council on adequate minimum wages in the European Union (AMWD). The authors begin by presenting the broader context of implementation, which includes changes in the approach to worker protection in Poland and the evolution of the legal regulation of the minimum wage. They then discuss the legal framework for setting up the minimum wage and collective bargaining. This serves as a starting point for a detailed presentation of the current state of implementation of the AMWD in Poland. First, the authors discuss legislative work on the new law on the statutory minimum wage. Second, they analyze the newly enacted Law on collective agreements, which can be considered a key element in promoting collective bargaining. In summary, the authors assess the planned and implemented amendments, as well as their potential impact on the development of the minimum wage and collective relations in Poland
Innovations of Greek Law 5163/2024 Transposing Adequate Minimum Wage Directive (EU) 2022/2041
This article examines the main legal and institutional innovations introduced by Greek Law 5163/2024, which transposes Directive (EU) 2022/2041 on adequate minimum wages. Law 5163/2024 replaces the earlier, narrowly framed domestic regime with a comprehensive framework that establishes universal coverage and introduces new statutory definitions; extends minimum-wage protection to the public sector; mandates the development of an action plan to promote collective bargaining; strengthens the institutional architecture for evidence-based wage-setting; and institutes an automatic annual adjustment mechanism, subject to specific suspension grounds and safeguarded by a non-regression clause. The article analyses, interprets, and assesses each innovation, highlighting associated interpretative and governance challenges
La didattica in archivio. Esperienze dall’Archivio di Stato di Ravenna
This contribution presents the main educational laboratories of the State Archives of Ravenna available for middle and high schools. Educational activity is considered an essential mission of the Institute. The proposed topics were selected trough experience, balancing elements of immediate interest, for example the possibility of experiencing thousand-year-old objects such as parchments, with the right historical and social contextualization. The educational research laboratories, the so-called "learning through the archive" could be started later, when a bond of solid collaboration between the Archive and Schools has been established, especially if favored by a more effective structure of cultural promotion activities.
