Jember Fashion Carnival: Konstruksi Identitas dalam Masyarakat Jaringan
This research focuses on the construction of Jember city identity in the network society era. This research revealed that the construction process of Jember city identity is complex. By using Manuel Castells’ theory about territorial identity especially in network society, this paper intends to interpret Jember Fashion Carnival (JFC) as a project identity in the discourse of network society. The findings show that JFC does not only negotiate Jember city identity but also practice logic of network society. It can be seen by the way that media can change JFC as a fashion carnival into a project of Jember city identity, and then transform it to financial capital as entertaining carnaval performed in various cities. Logic of networks have the ability to transform resources to be more profitable. But, how to internalize this idea to Jember cultural space that it recognized by all citizens is still a problem. Finally, how the end of this process is, and whether world city carnival will be a new identity of Jember, will be unveiled by time

This study discusses model of measurement to assess the effectiveness of programs of corporate social responsibility (CSR) held by corporation of mines, oil and gas, and geothermal in relation with poverty alleviation within the surrounding communities. The case study is conducted in a geothermal company in West Java. Results of study indicate that measurements of CSR should be developed in accordance with the scale of program, and should as well make use micro indicators which are relevant with elements of poverty. Also, the assessment should mainly be focused to the target group of beneficiaries. The role of corporation can be differentiated with the role of government in alleviating the poverty, and hence the effectiveness should be measured with micro indicators. In general, the significances of CSR program in poverty alleviation are high in the variables of effectivity and relevance, but low in variables of sustainability and empowerment. Dinamika Elit Lokal Madura
The priyayi played a vital role in leading the Indonesian community during the colonial era. The same applies to Madura society. During the colonial era, power wielded by the priyayi was constricted on the basis of Madura culture and was strengthened by the bureaucratic power structure at both the village and district/ city level. This was manifested in such ways as serving as a klébun or bupati. However, the pattern of priyayi power, which was underpinned by feudalism waned, being replaced by Islamic religious leaders known as kiai. During the New Order regime, kiai in Madura played a very dominant role which was not only limited to the realm of religion, but also all aspects of life ranging from social, politics, economic, to culture. Nevertheless, with the dawn of the reformation era, economic elites have catapulted themselves to prominence, and there are growing signs that they are replacing the role which religious leaders used to play in Madura society in general and in the political domain in particular through forming shadow state as a tool used to exert control over Madura Political dynamics. This concise paper presents as discussion of ‘political fights’ among cultural, religious, bureaucratic, and economic elites in Madura
Teori Ruang dalam Sosiologi Perkotaan: Sebuah Pendekatan Baru
When New Urban Sociology (NUS) appeared in urban sociology in early 1970s in Europe, by including state and class, it offered a macro view point, to answer the insuficiency of micro frame which had been the characteristic of urban sociology from the Chicago School. However, along with the weakening of welfare state, NUS also lost its significance, and it then chose to deconstruct itself through theory of space. This paper tries to elaborate the origin of NUS and its development, putting it in the present context, to explore the possibility of perspective of the urban as the hub that connects community, state, and the global world
Transformasi dalam Ranah Jazz Yogyakarta
This article tries to show the transformation of jazz music as a cultural product in Yogyakarta. This transformation is, according to Baumann, fluid, contradictory, and ambivalent. In the origin, this music became a symbol of resistance by the lower class, whereas in Indonesia jazz became the upper middle class consumption. However, in its development, some jazz musicians try to restore the original meaning by combining local elements and bring a hybrid genre of jazz, although this was not last long. The traditional elements can not survive to bring the spirit of resistance because this new genre of jazz eventually entered the music industry as a pop culture. Local elements in the end are commodified. The impact is then the reduction of the meaning of jazz and locality itself
Produksi Budaya dalam Seni Grafiti
In the midst of pro’s and con’s on the idea that creative economy (or production of culture) as the new engine of economic growth in a globalized world, what opportunity present for us in a developing country to be able to enter global market as a cultural producer. This paper draws from a case study of Darbotz, an Indonesian graffiti artist, whose works have been entered global market mainly through internet and gave him legitimacy as an influencer among his followers. Technology creates new space and lowers the entry barrier so that the division of sub-arena in the field of cultural production is diminishing. In the arena of cultural production there is a relation of collaboration, not only power relation that enabled actors to maximize their capital. Thus arena and sub-arena become fluid and open for any actors. This is because now eventhough arena of cultural production has its autonormativity rule, logic of capital and comodification also entering the arena. As a result, any actors who can produce distinction in their symbolic goods and exploit their social capital, can enter global market of symbolic goods
