ESP Textbook: What the Users' Need?
Abstract: This study was implemented in a private institution focusing on the ESP textbook employed in the class of management. There were 196 students, 9 ESP instructors, and one ESP expert who participated in this research. The aim was to know their perspectives toward the textbook used. It focused on five criteria applied. There were aims and approaches, skills and strategies, topics, practical considerations, and methodologies. The subjects agreed that from criteria of the aims and approaches, topics, and methodologies were good. In contrast, the other criteria, such as practical consideration and skills and strategies, slightly needed to be re-evaluated as some parts of them were inappropriate specifically to their level of comprehension.Keywords: ESP textbook, textbook evaluation, needs analysisAbstrak: Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada sebuah institusi swasta yang berfokus pada buku ESP yang digunakan pada kelas manajemen. Ada 196 mahasiswa, 9 instruktur dan seorang ahli ESP yang ikutserta dalam studi ini. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengetahui perspektif mereka terhadap buku yang digunakan. Penelitian ini berfokus pada lima kriteria. Kriteria tersebut yakni tujuan dan pendekatan, kemampuan dan strategi, topik, pertimbangan praktis, dan metodologi. Semua subjek setuju bahwa pada kriteria tujuan dan pendekatan, topik, dan metodologi, buku ini sudah baik. Sedangkan kriteria lain seperti pertimbangan praktis, dan keterampilan serta strategi sedikit perlu dievaluasi kembali karena beberapa bagian di antaranya tidak sesuai khususnya dengan tingkat pemahaman mereka. TEACHER’S BELIEFS AND PRACTICE TOWARD THE TEACHING READING STRATEGIES TO FOSTER STUDENTS’ CRITICAL THINKING
Abstract: This is a case study designed to investigate the Advanced Reading teacher’s beliefs in teaching reading and their practice, especially by involving critical thinking. It is obtained that the teacher believes in several strategies in teaching reading, which are case study, group discussion, and presentation of the text’s summary. While for the teaching practice the teacher implements several strategies which are group and classroom discussion, presentation and questioning, summarizing, and also storytelling. Some of the strategies are congruent with the teacher’s beliefs and some others are not in line with the teacher’s beliefs.Keywords: teacher’s belief, strategies, critical thinking Abstrak: Penelitian ini dilaksanakan melalui metode case study untuk mengetahui konsep guru dalam strategi pengajaran Reading serta tindakan praktikal yang dilakukan di kelas, terutama dalam mengintegrasikan pola berfikir kritis dalam kegiatan Reading. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa guru memiliki pandangan terhadap beberapa strategi mengaajr Reading yaitu studi kasus, diskusi dalam grup, dan presentasi dari hasil menyimpulkan bacaan. Sedangkan dalam kegiatan mengajar, guru menerapkan diskusi grup dan kelas, presentasi dan tanya jawab, membuat kesimpulan, dan juga menceritakan kembali. Beberapa strategi yang diterapkan di kelas sesuai dengan konsep yang dimiliki guru, dan beberapa strategi tidak sesuai dengan konsep yang dimiliki.Kata Kunci: keyakinan guru, strategi, berpikir kriti
TEACHER PERCEPTION ABOUT STUDENT BEHAVIOR, ENVIRONMENT CARE CULTURE ON THE CREATION OF HEALTHY SCHOOL
The environment is a key factor in improving healthy full-day school activities. It has a direct impact on the creation of children’s learning enjoyment. The purposes of this research are to explore students' perspectives on Student Friendly Behavior, Environment Care Culture and their effects on the creation of Clean and Healthy schools. This research involved 242 Elementary School teachers as participants in the City of Malang. Data were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed employing the Path analysis technique. Results indicated that both student-friendly behavior and environmental care culture influenced the creation of healthy and clean schools. School leaders need to be a concern on this factor in building effective schooling systems. The Influence of Taking Note on Listening Comprehension in The Pre-Intermediate EFL Students
Abstract: The study defined aboutaffecting taking note toward Pre-Intermediate EFL student’s listening comprehension. The study accomplishedquantitative method especially quasi experimental research. Test and questionnaire were parts of intruments in this study. Finding of this study showed that there isdisparity from the result of students’ listening comprehension between experimental and control group, there is affecting of taking note toward students’ listening comprehension and there are difficulties of implementation of taking note toward listening comprehension.Keywords: taking note, listening comprehension, Pre-Intermediate EFL students Abstrak: Penelitian ini menjelaskan tentang pengaruh strategi taking note terhadap pemahaman menyimak mahasiswa EFL Pre-Intermediate. Indonesian Passive Sentence Construction on Writing among Beginner Foreign Students
Abstract: This research aims to determine the form of Indonesian passive sentence in the essays of foreign students from America in beginner-level. The form of the passive sentence in the essay is analyzed based on the formation of the verb that fills the predicate function in the sentence. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach with the type of text analysis research. The data in this study are in the form of passive sentences contained in the essays of foreign students from America in beginner-level. The data analysis technique in this study was carried out in 3 (three) stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. From the results of this study, 62 data were obtained showing 4 (four) forms of passive sentences, namely (1) passive sentences predicated on verbs formed by di-, (2) passive sentences with predicated verbs formed by ter-, (3) passive sentences with predicated verbs formed by personal pronouns., and (4) passive sentences with predicated verbs formed by names.Keywords: passive sentence, passive verb form, BIPA for beginner, foreign studentsAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bentuk kalimat pasif bahasa Indonesia dalam karangan mahasiswa asing level pemula asal Amerika. Bentuk kalimat pasif dalam karangan dianalisis berdasarkan bentukan verba yang mengisi fungsi predikat dalam kalimat. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian analisis teks. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa kalimat pasif yang terdapat dalam karangan mahasiswa asing level pemula asal Amerika. Teknik analisis data pada penelitian ini dilakukan dalam 3 (tiga) tahap, yakni reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan simpulan. Dari hasil penelitian ini diperoleh 62 data yang menunjukkan 4 (empat) bentuk kalimat pasif, yakni (1) kalimat pasif berpredikat verba bentukan di-, (2) kalimat pasif berpredikat verba bentukan ter-, (3) kalimat pasif berpredikat verba bentukan pronomina persona, dan (4) kalimat pasif berpredikat verba bentukan nama.Keywords: kalimat pasif, verba pasif, BIPA level pemula, mahasiswa asin
The Effectiveness of Two Writing Portfolios on High School Students’ Writing Achievement
Abstract: Writing in English teaching and learning is perceived as a difficult skill due to internal and external factors. This study investigated the effectiveness of two writing portfolios (working writing portfolio and showcase writing portfolio) on high school students’ writing achievement utilizing quasi-experimental design. The effectiveness of the two writing portfolios was tested by comparing pre-treatment and post-treatment samples using Independent Samples t test between both treatments. Regarding to .05 significance of level, the p value was compared to .025 for each side of 2-tailed research. The result showed p value .028 which was higher than .025. It signified that there was not significant different effect between both writing portfolios.Keywords: writing portfolios, working writing portfolio, students’ writing achievementAbstrak: Menulis dalam belajar mengajar Bahasa Inggris dianggap sebagai keterampilan yang sulit karena faktor internal dan eksternal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keefektifan dua portofolio menulis (Working Writing Portfolio dan Showcase Writing Portfolio) terhadap prestasi menulis siswa menengah atas dengan menggunakan desain quasi-experimental. Keefektifan kedua portofolio menulis tersebut diuji dengan membandingkan sampel nilai Pre-treatment dan Post-treatment menggunakan uji Independent Samples t antara kedua perlakuan. Merujuk pada tingkat signifikansi .05, nilai p dibandingkan dengan .025 untuk masing-masing bagian dari penelitian 2 arah. Hasil uji menunjukkan nilai p .028 yang lebih tinggi dari .025. THE USE OF READING LOG TO BUILD LAO’S SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ENGLISH LITERACY
Abstract: This study aims to examine the use of Reading Log to build Lao’s junior student’s English literacy and related to the Reading Log as a useful literacy practice that can build the student’s English literacy that can promote parental involvement in student’ s English literacy, and the challenges in implementing Reading Log in SENGSAY school. The researcher used qualitative methodology to conduct this study by observation, interviews with teachers and some parents to find out how teachers conduct Reading Log to teach students and how Reading Log promote parental involvement
Beyond language deficiency: Students’ code-switching in International Program of Vocational Higher Education in Indonesia
Abstract: Code-switching (switching in-and-out from one language to another) has been an international debate whether it is a simply language avoidance or a communication strategy. It is thus crucial to see in what way and in what situations students made use code-switching in the classroom. The study was conducted in an English Medium Instruction at vocational tertiary level in East Java, Indonesia involving six students in the classroom observation and semi-structured interview in three content-subject classrooms. This study reported that students’ code-switching functioned for transmitting information to their peers, managing their interaction and building interpersonal relations. This study argues that code-switching is not merely done due to a language deficiency rather is an intentional strategy to make a meaningful communication. Students’ code-switching also showed a collectivist behaviour among the participants when their switching into a particular language for showing solidarity and concern to their peers. Key Words: students’ code-switching; international program; vocational higher education; Indonesia Abstrak: Alih kode atau yang disebut peralihan bahasa satu telah menjadi perdebatan untuk membuktikan apakah alih kode ini merupakan pengalihan karena ketidakpampuan dalam berbahasa ataukah strategi dalam berkomunikasi. Sangat penting untuk mengkaji dengan cara apa dan dalam situasi apa siswa menggunakan alih kode di dalam kelas. Penelitian ini dilakukan di kelas bilingual pada satu perguruan tinggi vokasi di Jawa Timur, Indonesia dengan melibatkan enam mahasiswa untuk observasi di kelas dan wawancara semi-terstruktur di tiga kelas bilingual. Studi ini melaporkan bahwa alih kode mahasiswa berfungsi untuk bertukar informasi dengan teman sebayanya, melakukan interaksi diantara mereka dan menjalin hubungan interpersonal. Temuan studi ini menunjukkan bahwa alih kode tidak semata-mata dilakukan karena keterbatasan dalam berbahasa, melainkan merupakan strategi dalam berkomunikasi. Penelitian ini melaporkan bahwa alih kode yang dilakukan mahasiswa juga menunjukkan perilaku kolektivis di antara mereka. The Influence of Traditional Games on The Motor Development of Students with Disabilities
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the application of traditional games on motor development in students with disabilities. The method used in this study is the experimental method. The sample that participated in this study in this study was 25 students with disabilities taken from three special needs kids schools with an average age of 12 years. The sampling technique used by the writer was purposive sampling. The data collected in this study used a preliminary test and a final test using a standing broad jump, long jump, and throwing test. The conclusion of the research shows that traditional games offer a significant difference in the motor development of children with disabilities.Key Words: traditional games, gross motor development, disabilities, physical educationAbstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji pengaruh penerapan dari permainan tradisional terhadap perkembangan motorik pada siswa penyandang disabilitas. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ialah metode eksperimen, sampel yang berpartisipasi dalam penelitian sebanyak 25 orang siswa disabilitas yang diambil dari tiga sekolah SLB dengan usia rata-rata siswa 12 tahun. Teknik pengambilan data yang digunakan ialah purposive sampling. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian menggunakan tes awal dan tes akhir dengan menggunakan tes standing broad jump, long jump, melempar. Simpulan penelitian menun-jukkan bahwa permainan tradisional memberikan perbedaan yang signifikan pada perkembangan motorik anak disabilitas.Kata kunci: permainan tradisional, perkembangan motorik kasar, disabilitas, pendidikan jasman
Cohesive Devices in Student’s Writing (A Discourse Analysis on Argumentative Text)
Abstract: This research aims to analyse a piece of argumentative writing produced by fifth semester of Darussunnah students in a term of cohesion issues of discourse analysis. The cohesive devices are viewed as a structure of analysis to investigate the grammatical and lexical cohesion in writing. Qualitative and quantitative (mixed method) were applied in analysing the data. The quantitative analysis investigates the frequency and percentage of errors committed in student’s writing. Qualitative analysis were employed to investigate linguistic description and the explanation of the cohesion produced by student’s writing. The result showed that students have performed the cohesive devices. However, students need to improve the use of cohesive device, especially in grammatical cohesion to result higher level of cohesion.Key Words: Argumentative writing, cohesive devices, grammatical and lexical cohesion Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis karya tulis argumentatif mahasiswa semester V Darussunnah dalam kerangka analisis permasalahan kohesi. Perangkat kohesif dipandang sebagai struktur analisis untuk menyelidiki kohesi gramatikal dan leksikal dalam menulis. Analisis data dilakukan secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif (metode campuran). Analisis kuantitatif penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki frekuensi dan persentase kesalahan yang dilakukan dalam kegiatan menulis siswa. Analisis kualitatif digunakan untuk menyelidiki deskripsi linguistik dan penjelasan tentang kohesi yang dihasilkan oleh tulisan siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa telah melaksanakan perangkat kohesif. Namun, siswa perlu meningkatkan penggunaan perangkat kohesif, terutama pada kohesi gramatikal untuk menghasilkan tingkat kohesi yang lebih tinggi.Kata kunci:Penulisan argumentatif, perangkat kohesif, kohesi gramatikal dan leksika
