The relationship between attitudes toward suicide and willingness to pay for suicide prevention: A cross-sectional study in Japan
Get PDFapplication/pdfThere are gaps in our knowledge of the role attitudes toward suicide play in determining people's willingness to participate (WTP) for suicide prevention. We conducted a large-sized nation-wide cross-sectional study with the aim of clarifying the relationship between WTP for reducing suicide risk and attitudes toward suicide. Ordinal logistic regression analyses (n=1771) showed that There were significant associations of WTP for suicide prevention with 'Suicide as a right' (β=-0.15,95% CI:-0.25 to -0.04,P=0.006), 'Preventability/readiness to help' (β=0.81,95% CI:0.69 to 0.94, P<0.001) and 'Common occurrence' (β=0.32,95% CI:0.19 to 0.46,P<0.001).'Incomprehensibility/unpredictability' did not show an association with WTP.Promoting taxpayer acceptance for suicide prevention is more likely to be achieved through provision of information that increases endorsement of 'preventability/readiness to help' or 'common occurrence' factors, and decreases 'suicide as a right' score.journal articl

Dionysus in Classics, Archaeology, and Anthropology
Get PDFapplication/pdfThis treatise is divided in two sections: the first part deals with an historical review of previous Dionysian research in relation to my own work. It seems to me that Dionysus was given the role of a stranger god in the Greek pantheon. It was probably an intentional amalgam of antipolis elements (ecstasy, frenzy, savagery, feminine, animal, unconscious) incorporated into the public, official polis religion. In that sense, Dionysian elements are not confined to ancient Greece but could be present in every culture. After reviewing several cultures that employ effeminate priests and shamans, I came to a hypothesis that at the core of these Dionysian elements lies the existence of a similar class of people, i.e. asexual or transsexual priests. By this I mean a class of people who find themselves different from the majority in perception and choose to live as specialists dealing with the otherworld. In my opinion, the Dionysian experience could be grouped in the same category as the androgynous figures found in Gunnestrup Cauldron, Scythian enares, and North American berdache. If these asexual or transsexual religious figures of different areas share common traits, they might come from a genetic particularity, i.e. a GID (gender identity disorder). This surely is a wild and very speculative proposal, but if we do not wish to confine things Dionysian to the domain of Classics, we should also use materials from other branches of the humanities such as archaeology and anthropology. I am not sure if the issue of the possible relationship between a GID and the special kind of religious functionary in areas I discuss in this paper could be connected with the issue of eunuchs in general and gallus (pl. galli), a eunuch priest of the Pyrgian goddess Cybele and her consort Attis in particular. Get PDFapplication/pdfThis study is based on an accumulation of experimental teaching of practical English at the language laboratory or the Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) class at Wako University. This researcher has used personal computers to have students read and record their oral
reading in their computer at this CALL class on an experimental basis.
In this paper, this researcher has first expressed the background and the purpose of this study. Then, he has described the recording feature of Windows personal computer and the procedures for its use, along with directions to the students in the classroom. Next, this researcher has applied oral reading and phonics study in this language laboratory, and described effective teaching methods in this classroom. How to check and evaluate the students' oral recording was also explained. Lastly, he has reported the students' feedback and achievement.
Through these oral reading activities at the CALL class, the students have demonstrated positive attitudes toward English-study and later, they have expressed their strong intentions to study English further.departmental bulletin pape

Humanities is Dead as Rock is Dead : Death of an Experimental University
Get PDFapplication/pdfThis paper was the featured panel in the annual conference for Association for Japanese Literary Studies (AJLS) at Chicago University in 2013. The panel was organized by Michael Bourdaghs, the professor on Japanese literature and pop-cultures at University of Chicago. The focus was on two musicians: Hayakawa Yoshio（早川義夫）and Masahide Sakuma（佐久間正英）, their band, Ces Chiens, held a live concert after the panel. Both famous musicians were students of Wako University in the early days. Unfortunately Sakuma (one of my rock heroes in my teen years, the mid of 1970's) was struggling with the serious stage of cancer which showed in his performances at the gig (Sadly he passed away in January 2014). Side by side with two legendary musicians from Wako in the panel, my paper drew on a brief historical retrospection and some critical remarks of the recent situation of Wako University. The intention of this essay is not romanticizing or idealizing nostalgically some moments of Wako. Rather, indeed, the paper would explore critically why and how the interesting and radical attempts in the past has been smashed away or even repressed under the name of 'normalization', which is certainly a bi-lateral result of neo-liberal reformation of higher education system in Japan since the decade. The banalization of Wako can be posited along with the degradation and crisis of humanities in general. This essay doesn't contend to go back to customs and methods in the past, but rather engages with opening the new potentiality and imagination for the ruined Wako.departmental bulletin pape
