The History of People's Lives as Interpreted from the Choshu Domain Family Register in the Early 19th Century : The Formation of a Port Town,Families, and Children

application/pdfIn Tokugawa Japan, the Setouchi region became an economically advanced area due to the development of salt fields that produced salt by boiling seawater. In this study, the author analyzed the family register (1827-1872) of a small port town in the Seto Inland Sea using a family reconstruction method. It reveals how even common people took on the challenge of forming new families based on husband and wife units, and how the stem-family system of Tokugawa Japan and the discriminatory conditions for children between heirs and non-heirs were disappearing. When parents had come from outside and died, orphans were sent back to the parents’ original villages and entrusted to the chiefs there. When parents were native and died, people found a family which could accept the child. When parents were alive but could not raise their child, other family promised to adopt the baby before it was born.departmental bulletin pape

Words and Images : The Ideal of ‘Paideia’ in late Prof. MATSUEDA Itaru

application/pdfThis article focuses on the writings of late Prof. MATSUEDA Itaru to examine his worldview and thought. The result of analysing the frequency of references to the literature mentioned in his seven books shows that the highest rate of reference was to China-related sources. The root of his interest in ‘Asia’ can be traced to his father, a Chinese literature scholar, whose books he came to know in everyday life. In the process of studying Western art, he came across the German-Jewish art historian Aby Warburg and was inspired by his method. During his master’s studies, Prof. Matsueda’s interest moved from the West to the past, and then to the East. In addition, the story of his family name, which he was told repeatedly by his father as a child, formed an image of his ancestors as Korean potters, and had a significant impact on his worldview which he linked his own blood to the continent. The name of Wako University’s Open College ‘Paideia’, which Prof. Matsueda named, is thought to be inspired by the Greek philosopher Plato’s idea of education, παιδεια, as the construction of new knowledge through dialogue with others, and he also followed this. His achievements were to develop academic studies and education at Wako University through a strong curiosity that was not bound by existing academic fields and a spirit of inquiry that transcended specialisation.departmental bulletin pape

A Study on the Relationship between General Purpose Financial Reporting

application/pdfIn Japan, medical corporations are defined as non-profit corporations. Under the Medical Care Act, two criteria distinguish medical corporations from for-profit corporations:(1)the prohibition of the distribution of surplus, and (2)the prohibition of the distribution of surplus plus the denial of the right to claim equity interests of the members. However, the Report on General Purpose Financial Reporting for Non-profit Corporations issued by the Japanese Institute of Certified Public Accountants(JICPA) in 2019 states that the non-profit status of a non-profit corporation should be judged based on the public or common benefit nature of the business operated by the corporation. The decision as to whether a JICPA report includes medical corporation accounting depends on whether the requirement for public benefit is satisfied by the establishment and operation of medical institutions by a medical corporation.departmental bulletin pape
