A balancing act: financial and time constraints of students with a delayed transition to higher education
In general, European countries concur that the demographics of the student body should mirror the social structure of the population for higher education to be socially equitable (EHEA, 2020).
To promote diversity of students also in terms of age, framework conditions must be created that make starting studies at a later point in life possible. The necessity for flexible learning pathways to facilitate lifelong learning and equity is emphasised in the “Education 2030” agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 4 (OECD, 2018; United Nations, 2015).
Currently, only around one in six students is a so-called “student with a delayed transition” who starts studying for the first time more than two years after leaving the regular school system (i.e. excluding evening schools or schools for adults)1 (Schirmer, 2024). This raises the questions of the barriers and challenges those students might currently face. It has to be examined, whether the current support systems, which are often intended for students with direct transitions, are also suitable for students who start their studies later and thus for students who often have to juggle their time and financial resources between their studies and other commitments.
This intelligence brief provides insights into the financial situation and the time budget of students with a delayed transition to show the specific situation of this group and provide input for potential measures. The analysis builds on data of the EUROSTUDENT 8 database and includes students from 24 countries
Student well-being: The role of socio-demographic background, contextual conditions, and study demands and resources on the well-being of students in the European Higher Education Area
Voters’ feelings of exclusion and behavioral intentions after political elections: Replicating and extending findings on vicarious exclusion
Previous research from the United States suggests that having voted for a losing-side candidate in presidential elections is associated with individual feelings of exclusion and social pain, reactions usually observed in interpersonal or small-group instances of exclusion. The current research replicates these findings for voters of losing-side parties in a field study on a real election in a European country (Austria; Study 1), demonstrating that findings hold within a different political system. Moreover, we add experimental support for the causal effect of electoral loss on feelings of exclusion and social pain reactions in a two-party (Study 2) and a multiparty context (Study 3). We further extend previous research by demonstrating that postelectoral need-threat likely translates into behavioral intentions on a societal level (Studies 1–3). The current findings add to an emerging line of research on the importance of individual feelings of exclusion in politics by integrating small-group research with macropolitical behavior
Cointegrated portfolios and volatility modeling in the cryptocurrency market
We examine two major topics in the field of cryptocurrencies. On the one hand, we investigate possible long-run equilibrium relationships among ten major cryptocurrencies by applying two different cointegration tests. This analysis aims at constructing cointegrated portfolios that enable statistical arbitrage. Moreover, we find evidence for a connection between market volatility and the spread used for trading. The results of the trading strategies suggest that cointegrated portfolios based on the Johansen procedure generate the highest abnormal log-returns, both in-sample and out-of-sample. Five out of six trading strategies generate a positive overall profit and outperform a passive investment approach out-of-sample.
The second part of the econometric analysis explores Granger causality between volatility and the spread. For this analysis, we implement two types of forecasting models for Bitcoin volatility: the GARCH (generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity) family using daily price data and the HAR (Heterogeneous AutoRegressive) model family based on 5-min high-frequency data. In both categories, we also consider potential jumps in the price series, as we found that price jumps play an important role in Bitcoin volatility forecasts. The findings indicate that the realized GARCH model is the only GARCH model that can compete against the HAR-RV (Heterogeneous Autoregressive Realized Volatility) model in out-of-sample forecasting
Gender, inequality, and cleaning platforms
We dive into the world of gig economy-based domestic cleaning, where gender inequalities intersect with other axes of disadvantage. Laura Wiesböck (Institute for Advanced Studies Vienna, Austria) explores the experiences of female cleaners in private households, uncovering the challenges they face in this fragmented and informal sector. We examine how platform-based cleaning laborers face power imbalances, objectification, and information asymmetry
Gleichstellung durch Bildung? Was Höherqualifizierung von Frauen wirklich bewirkt
