Relationship between balance of upper and lower lip–closing forces during pursing–like lip–closing and lateral craniofacial morphology.

application/pdfThe aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between the balance of upper- and lower-lip-closing forces (LCF) during pursing-like lip-closing and lateral craniofacial morphology. Sixty-two females with malocclusion were subjected to lateral cephalography and divided into 3 groups (skeletal Classes I, II and III) by the value of ANB. The LCF was measured using a multidirectional LCF measurement system, which could assess eight directional LCF during pursing-like lip-closing. Statistical analysis by the comparison of values among the groups was performed by the Kruskal-Wallis test, and correlation coefficients were tested by Pearson’s product-moment correlation. Significance was set at P < 0.05. Total upper LCF, which was the sum of upper, right and left upper directional LCF, in Class II was significantly greater than that in Class I. The balance index of upper and lower LCF in group II was significantly higher than that in group III. There were weak positive correlations between upper LCF and FMA, and the balance index of upper and lower LCF and ANB or convexity, whereas there was a negative correlation between FMIA and the balance index of upper and lower LCF. These findings support the concept of dental compensation for anterior-posterior malposition of the maxillary and mandibular regions by inclination of the incisors.journal articl

Contribution of the amino acid residues located near the active site metal to the metal–specific activity of Porphyromonas gingivalis SOD induced by a double mutation of Leu 72 Trp and Leu 76 Phe

application/pdfThe role of superoxide dismutase (SOD) as a radical scavenger in Porphyromonas gingivalis is well documented. P. gingivalis SOD (Pg SOD), which is characterized by a metal–tolerant activity, can use either iron or manganese as a cofactor. Leu ₇2 and Leu ₇6, located near the active–site metal, are characteristic amino acid sequences of Pg SOD proteins, although they are substituted to Trp in the ₇2 position and Phe in the ₇6 position in most iron–containing SOD (Fe–SOD) proteins. In the present study, we constructed a mutant of the enzyme with changes from Leu ₇2 to Trp and Leu ₇6 to Phe. This mutant SOD was examined with respect to its metal–dependent activity and structural characterization. We herein conclude the integrity of Leu ₇2 and Leu ₇6 is a necessary requisite for the metal–tolerant activity of Pg SOD.journal articl

application/pdfObjective: The current accessibility of large volumes of clinical data has led to increasedlongevity of dental implants, and expectations surrounding prosthetic survival are rising. However, there are few case reports regarding the causes of defluxion of dental implants.Due to the significance of such cases in clinical practice, we report herein a survey investigatingthe causes of defluxion of dental implants in our clinic. Methods: Patients who had been fitted with a Brånemark or Replace implant in ourclinic between January 1997 and October 2012 and who were recalled between October 2011and October 2012 (1₅8 patients, 4₅8 implants) were investigated to determine the causes ofdefluxion of their implants and 10 potential related factors. Results: Defluxion occurred in a total of 19 of the 4₅8 implants (4.1%), ranging from asearly as 26 days post–insertion in an unloaded implant to as late as 4,269 days post–insertionin a case of implant fracture. Univariate and multivariate analysis revealed a greaterincidence of implant defluxion among men compared to women (P = 0.022), and a significantlygreater incidence for implant overdentures compared to simple prosthetic designs, such as crowns, linked crowns, and bridges (P=0.004). Conclusion: The present findings reaffirmed aspects of dental implant fitting that requireattention in clinical practice to ensure longevity, particularly prosthetic design andfitting method, as well as the effects of smoking. However, a multicenter survey is requiredto provide further evidence and support these findings.journal articl
