application/pdfThe purpose of the present study was to investigate the histologic responses to hydroxyapatite (HAP) ceramics particles. After the first and second premolar teeth in the mandibular ridges of adult dogs were surgically removed, HAP ceramics particles were placed in the fresh extraction sockets produced by extracting the first premolar teeth. The fresh extraction sockets of the second premolar teeth served as controls without implantation. Animals were sacrificed three months after implantation. The tissues on implant sites were examined by radiography and light microscopy. The results were summarized as follows. 1) Three months after implantation, a large number of HAP particles were surrounded by new bone. However, some HAP particles located in the central area of the implant sites were surrounded by connective tissues. 2) No detectable inflammation was observed in the tissues surrounding the implant, but osteoclastic cells and macrophages were occasionally found on the HAP ceramics surface. 3) Bone repairs on the implant sites were more delayed than those of contols. These results suggest that HAP ceramics particles have excellent tissue biocompatibility. However, further investigation is needed for clinical use.journal articl
application/pdfGingival fluid, sulcular fluid, gingival crevicular (crevice) fluid and gingival exdute are the substances which seep out of the gingival sulcus or periodontal pocket. Evidence has been accumulated that the amount and make-up of the fluid changes along the clinical situation. Therefore, the author made an overview of the latest studies relating to gingival fluid and its clinical significance in this paper. The clinical significance of gingival fluid can be summarized as follows. 1. Defense against periodontal tissues 1) Washes bacillus and remaining food material out of the gingival sulcus (flows them out); 2) Possesses antimicrobial properties (leukocytes, gamma globulin, lysozyme, etc.); 3) Improves adhesion of the epithelial attachment to the tooth; 2. Destruction of periodontal tissues 1) Supplies the medium (protein, calcium) which makes bacterial growth possible; 2) Contributes to the formation of dental plaque and calculus; Based on these facts, the measurement and analysis of gingival fluid appears to be useful in early and effective evaluation of the internal condition of tissues in periodontal disease. It would be extremely effective in motivating patients.journal articl
application/pdfIn order to reveal the role of the ATP hydrolyzing enzyme in the mucous membrane of the frog tongue test solutions containing ATP were applied to the tongue surface of intact frogs. The ATP of the solutions was found to be hydrolyzed proportionally to the number of application, indicating that the active sites of the ATP hydrolyzing enzyme is exposed in the oral cavity. Some properties of the ATP hydrolyzing enzyme were also studied.journal articl

application/pdfThe operative technique of shape memory implant is as easy as that of usual blade implant. In addition, the occlusal supporting force increases with shape memory effect. But, after the operation, impression-taking and the construction of the master cast containing the implant become difficult. When the master cast is removed from the impression and the superstructure is made up on the cast, the implant-head part is liable to break down due to thinness. We made up the constructon method of the master cast using a type of cold-curing pattern resins. In this method, as the implant-head part was made of acrylic resin, it does not break off. However, it is a serious problem that the cold-curing resin has about 0.67% of a line shrinkage after 24 hours. This problem was solved by combining the resin and resin post pins.journal articl

application/pdfSeveral dentists in our department visited eleven institutions for the handicapped including three nursing homes, two training institutions, four special schools for mentally retarded children, and two special hospitals for severely handicapped patients, and examined the oral condition of every person in each. Four of the institutions had been controlled by our dental health care system with circuit check-up every four months. Eight hundred and fifty eight handicapped people were examined. The number of non-caries teeth, decayed teeth, restrated teeth and extracted teeth were recorded, and the condition of prosthetics, gingivae and oral cleanliness were evaluated. The data in each institution were compared with the others. The following findings were obtained; 1. The condition of dental caries varied widely with institution. In some institutions, almost all caries except first degree had been treated and toothache or teeth-loss by caries was nonexistent. However, in other institutions, many severely decayed teeth were left untreated, and many persons suffered from pain or gingival inflammation. 2. The average number of untreated decayed teeth was only about two in four institutions where the teeth of the residents are controlled by our dental health care system with the circuit dental check-up. Even in severely handicapped people it was remarkably smaller than the average normal Japanese. On the other hand, in the institutions where the teeth had not been cantrolled the dental health of the residents was very poor. The average of untreated decayed teeth was eight or nine. 3. Comparison with two other similar institutions showed that these remarkable differences were associated with the presence of the dental health care system and an appropriate supply of dental treatment. 4. The condition of prosthetics also differed widely. In some institutions, many people were using fixed bridges or dentures. But in the remainder, even the handicapped with extensive tooth-loss were left untreated. Their skillfulness with a removable denture appeared to depend upon the nature and degree of their disability, and it seemed essential to have an understanding dentist for them. 5. On the condition of gingiva and oral cleanliness, there were definite gaps among the institutions. In the controlled institutions even the severely handicapped who could not handle a tooth brush could maintain a clean oral cavity and good oral health by the help and assistance of understanding personnel in the institution. The abnormal growth of the gingiva due to the anti-convulsion agent had been checked in those institutions. 6. To recover and maintain the good oral health of the handicapped, we consider our dental health care system with circuit dental check-up to be one of the most useful measures.journal articl
Brushing in handicapped children. 1: Relation between tooth brushing and developmental level
journal articl
A Comparative Study on Histopathological Aspects of Benign and Malignant Smooth Muscle Tumors appeared in Oral Regions
application/pdfHistopathological aspects of two cases of smooth muscle tumors appeared in oral regions (case 1: angiomyoma; case 2: leiomyosarcoma) have been described. Histopathological features of both cases showed a similarity in terms of relationship with blood vessels. In spite of the changes of cell structure and the destructive pattern of cell proliferation, the results as determined by special staining techniques were the same in the benign and malignant tumors. The histopathological features, origin, and differential diagnosis of the two types of tumors were also discussed.journal articl
application/pdfA case of naso-alveolar cyst in a 43-year-old woman was reported and, subsequently, 152 identical cases reported in 107 Japanese articles were organized and discussed. 1) The most instructional theory was the fissural theory, which was presented in 23 reports. 2) The size of many cysts was 10-20mm. 3) Many cysts adhered to the cavum nasi and the naso-vestibular, and absorbed bone outside of the maxilla. 4) Many epithelial patterns were of the columnar type. The contents were of the mucoid type and were tinged with yellow. 5) It was concluded that the following factors are inportant in the diagnosis of nasoalveolar cysts; 1. Relation between cyst and tooth. 2. Absorbed pattern of the maxilla. 3. Relation of adherence between cyst and the cavum nasi. 4. Detailed pathological examination. 5. Quality of content fluid.journal articl
