application/pdfThe physical properties (the coefficient of elasticity, the yield point and the compression strength) of dental alloys (20K gold alloy, Ag-Au-Pd alloy, Ag-In alloy, Ni-Cr alloys) and dental investments (phosphate-bonded investments and gypsum bonded investments) were measured by the compression-test at high temperature. The result of the measurements were as follows. 1. As shown in Table 1, the physical properties of alloys (the coefficient of elasticity and the yield point) dropped severely at high temperature. 2. As shown in Table 2, properties of investments did not drop at high temperature. 3. The elastic coefficient of comprisied investments rose several times more than did that of noncomprisied investments at high temperature. This rise of the elastic coefficient is due to the sintering of investments.journal articl

application/pdfOne hundred aged people who live in the nursing home 'Kikyo-so" were investigated as to their life condition and their demand for dental treatment. The following findings were obtained; 1. They consisted of twenty-two men and seventy-eight women, aged 65~94 (average: 78.5). Although the Kikyo-so opened fifteen years ago, about sixty percent of them had lived there for less than three years. 2. Seventy-five percent of them were suffering from brain disorders including sequelae of cerebral apoplexy (61.0%), cerebral arteriosclerosis (10.0%) and softening of the brain (4.0%). The others had systemic diseases such as chronic heart diseases (6.0%). 3. Most of them were suffering from mental and/or physical disabilities. Only twenty percent of them could walk on their own. About sixty percent of them could not see well, and about forty percent had hearing disorders. Mental impairment was found in more than half. 4. Most of them required help and assistance in their daily life. Without assistance, only twenty-six percent of them could walk, forty-four percent could eat, five percent could bathe, sixteen percent could dress and undress and thirty-two percent could excrete their body wastes. 5. With only one exception, all of them were insured by the social security system. Eighty-nine percent were covered by medical insurance for the aged. 6. Most of them required special foods such as gruel. Only sixteen percest of them could take an ordinary meal. 7. As many as twelve percent of them complained of acute symptoms in their oral cavities. Half of these complaints were about toothaches. Immediate dental treatment should be performed for these people. 8. Twenty-nine percent of them had impairment in their chewing ability. 9. Forty-five percent of them were using removable dentures. This ratio seemed extremely low in comparison with the average for that age group. 10. As the greatest difficulty in receiving dental care, seventy-three percent of them stated the difficulty of visiting a dental clinic. 11. Twenty-seven percent of them expressed a desire to receive dental treatment.journal articl

application/pdfIn radiographic diagnosis of salivary gland disease, superimposition of bone and contrast materials often poses problems for investigators. We attempted photographic subtraction on sialograms, and attained the following results. 1. As a fundamental experiment, we measured the density of original Alminum step X-ray films, masking films, and printing films at several exposures to determine optimum exposure time. 2. By subtracting superimpositions, sialograms were interpreted more clearly on subtraction films than on original X-ray films. The best subtracting effect was obtained in P-A projection of parotis. The second one was found in mandibular oblique projection and in pantomograms of the mandibular glands. Subtracted pantomograms and the mandibular oblique projection of parotis were somewhat difficult to interpret. 3. In this study, we succeeded in obtaining exact fixings of the head and mandible similar to roentgenometry in fundamental experiments. But in clinical cases, involuntary movements of the hyoid bone and its surrounding soft tissues often caused unwanted shadows on the subtracted films. We hope to solve these problems at a later date.journal articl

Measurement of Pocket Depths Using a New Automatic Constant-Force Probe

    Get PDF
application/pdfUsing a new automatic constant-force probe, the author measured the pocket depth for all surfaces in both arches in patients with periodontal disease and clinically healthy students, a total of 27 subjects. The results were as follows: 1. The time required for probing of all surfaces in both arches in the subjects was on the average 6 minutes 39 seconds ± 56 seconds. 2. The variation in measurements with the automatic probe was not different from that with the calibrated periodontal probe. 3. This new probe provided automatic digital display, print out, and a graph of the pocket depth by simply inserting the tip into the periodontal pocket. It was concluded that it was not necessary to read and record the measurement scale. In addition, It was easy to operate and could measure more accurately and faster than any other probe. This new probe is appropriate for routine clinical use.journal articl

application/pdfWe investigated the periodontal disease of 267 patients (174 males and 93 females) who visited the periodontics department in the Matsumoto Dental College Hospital, from January 1978 to December 1979. The records of the periodontal patients showed the chief complaint, plaque control score, location of the complaint, Gingival Index (GI), Plaque Index(PI), Calculus Index (CI), mobility, pocket depth, width of attached gingiva, degree of bone loss, the progress of the disease, the initial preparation and other clinical findings from the first visit. 1. In February there were many 30-40 year-old patients of both sexes, and in most cases the chief complaint was mobility. 2. The location of the chief complaint was generally the anterior teeth of both arches, and there were many cases in which the Gingival Index was 3, the Plaque Index was 1, the Calculus Index was 2, and mobility was 2. 3. The plaque control score at the first visit was 66-70% and the state of oral hygiene was bad. 4. Case in which the pocket depth was 4.0mm and the width of the attached gingiva was 3.6-4.0mm were numerous. 5. Almost all of the patients visited the clinic with diseases in the moderate stage. 6. Besides scaling and brushing instruction, temporary splint by wire and resin ligature were the most frequetly used periodontal treatment.journal articl

application/pdfA study was made to evaluate the adaptability of full cast crowns in preclinical practice of the fifth year students at Matsumoto Dental College in 1984. Gap space between the inner surface of the full cast crown and the surface of the abutment tooth was investigated with silicon material. The results were as follows: 1) The adaptability of crowns was better at the mesial surface than at the distal surface, and better at the lingual surface than at the buccal surface. 2) The adaptability of crowns was better at the axial walls, especialy in the middle, than in the cervical margin. 3) At the occulusal surface, the adaptability of crowns was worst.journal articl

application/pdfQuantitative analysis of the composition of dental alloys was attempted by means of inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. Small amounts of the alloys were sampled as specimens, which weighed 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 120 and 240 mg. Each specimens was dissolved in nitric acid or aqua regia solution. The specimens examined were 20 carat gold alloy, 12 percent content gold-palladium-silver-copper system alloy, indium-silver system alloy, chromium-nickel system alloy, and chromium-cobalt system alloy. Results are as follows 1. In the solutions, in which more than 64mg of the alloys were dissolved, the total weight of detectable elements was equal to the original weight of the specimen, while in the solutions dissolving less than 32mg of the alloys, it was less than the original weight. 2. In the solutions dissolving more than 8mg of the alloys, the content of each element calculated from the detected values was the same with that obtained in the solution dissolving more 64mg of the specimen. It is concluded that more than 64mg of samples was necessitated to obtain the same accuracy for infinitesimal elements of the alloys.journal articl
