application/pdfThis study was made on documents that had been donated by the pioneer of modern Japanese dentistry, the late Dr. Shinzo Watanabe, to Matsumoto Dental College. The topic was "practitioners in the Meiji period". Although the material left by Dr. Watanabe contained many documents, we investigated only the letters of appointment, notifications, and other notes concerning the dental licensing examination from 1887 to 1909-the years in which Dr. Watanabe began to serve as an examiner until the year of his death. A detailed account of the dental licensing examination is given by the documents in "The History of Dental Hygienics" and in "The History of Medical Treatment in Modern Japan". In addition, there is a report on Dr. Watanabe as an examiner based on data supplied by the Watanabe family given by Mr. Seto. However, the investigators recognized a few points in the information that needed correction and revision. The results are as follows: 1) In the 2^ examination, that was held in 1904 for the first time, the dates of the written (theoretical) part of the exam and the practical part (lab) were changed. The latter was given 1 to 1 1/2 months after the former. 2) To pass the exam, a score higher than 50% on each part (written and practical) was required. 3) According to Dr. Watanabe's list of marks, the average score in one subject did not exceed 5 points out of 10. This reflects an average pass rate of 20%, as shown in the cumulative chronological table of examination results. It seems that in the practical exam, the number of examinees per examiner was limited to 10 or less in one day.journal articl

application/pdfIn order to accumulate the fundamental data for discussing the thermal distribution of shape memory blade implant by high frequency heating, three points on the implant body were measured by micro thermocouples. The results were as follows: 1. When the heating condition was 2.5A 30 sec, the temperature was too low for the shape memory effect, but when the heating condition was 3A 30 sec and 3.5A 30 sec, the temperature on the neck part of the implant rose too high. 2. When the temperature was 50.7℃ (mean) on the neck part and 40.0℃ (mean) on the end of the foot part of the implant with a heating condition of 2.5A 60 sec, the shape memory effect was obtained. 3. When we used high power-short time heating, only the surface of the neck part reached a high temperature. Because the thermal conductivity of NT alloy (Nitinol) was low, however, the end of foot part didn't heat. Satisfactory results were obtained when low power-long time heating was used.journal articl

application/pdfBasal view cephalometrics X-ray photos were taken of fifteen patients with unilateral posterior cross bite, using the Sectograph (Quint Co. LTD.) in order to study the relation between plagiocepaly and unilateral cross bite of orthodontic patients. Based on the classification of plagiocepaly, fifteen patients with cross-bite were examined, and put into the following categories: 1. C1 type 2. C2 type 3. C3 type A large number of samples may be needed to come to a conclusion.journal articl

application/pdfFor the purpose of searching the mechanism of salivary calculus formation, a salivary calculus obtained from the duct of the submandibular gland of a 65-year-old woman was examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopes and electron probe microanalysers from the point of view of the relationship between the calculus and microorganisms. The results were as follows: 1) Cocci and filamentous microorganisms were observed both on the surface and inside the salivary calculus. 2) Filamentous microorganisms on the surface had double membrane structures and a nucleus. 3) Needle-like deposits in the cytoplasm of the filamentous microorganisms showed an intracellular calcification. 4) The distribution of intracellular calcium salts differed each microorganisms. Some contained the elements of P and Ca among higher at the periphery, while in others they were higher in the center.journal articl

application/pdfNBD-phallacidin, a fluorescent probe, was used to stain F-actin in the taste bud cells of foliate and circumvallate papillae in rabbits. F-actin bundles were observed in the microvilli of the taste bud cells, as well as in those of the intestinal epithelial cells. The microsomal fraction of foliate papillae electrophoresed on SDS-polyacrylamide slab gel was shown to contain proteins corresponding to actin and myosin.journal articl

application/pdfA statistical observation was made of 912 cases receiving general anesthesia from February 1983 to September 1985, at the hospital of Kobe University, National Kobe Hospital and Kobe Children's Hospital. Some of the results were as follows: 1) The total of the high risks (the risk 2 to 5 group at physical status of ASA) was 218 cases, or 23.9%. Among the elderly, the risks were associated with complications of chronic circulatory diseases, and among infants, complex abnormalities. 2) Among the adult cases, the middle age group (30 to 50 years) comprised 40.9%. Cases of childeren under one year of age had predictably high incidence at the Childern's Hospital. 3) Concerning the induction technique of anesthesia in infants and children, the slow induction in which halothane was added, after inhalation for one minute of a high concentration of Nitrous Oxide (80%) in Oxygesn, has a more rapid and smooth effect than the usual induction technique. 4) A combination of Epidural Block and a light level of qeneral anesthesia appeared to result in clear and immediate recovery and good postoperative sedation in the elderly. 5) The micro drip method of Fentanyl with Pancronium was used in operations in the oral cavity. This method was proved effective as the means of maintaining circulatory stability during operation, with good recovery from anesthesia and no post-operative pain.journal articl

Scanning Electron Microscopic Investigations of the Shape of Toothbrush Filaments with Various Brushing Techniques I. The most effective case of plaque removal

application/pdfUsing 30 second-year students of the Matsumoto Dental College, School of Dental Hygiene as subjects, we performed investigations on toothbrush filament shape changes while using 4 test toothbrushes and 4 different brushing techniques over 2 week periods. Also, observation by scanning electron microscopy was done for the toothbrush which yielded the best plaque removal. The results were as follows: 1. The edge of the brush filament was worn almost rectangularly along the longitudinal axis after 2 weeks of using the Bass and scrub techniques. 2. The filament edge tended to become sharper with the rolling and modified Stillman techniques. The round-cut and moving area of the toothbrush body were worn significantly using the rolling and modified Stillman techniques. 3. The toothbrush filaments with every brushing technique were worn significantly. Deep ditches, scratches and peeling were frequently observed with the rolling and modified Stillman techniques.journal articl

A Clinical Examination and Electromyographic Evaluation in Edentulous Patient with MPD Syndrome

application/pdfIt is not easy to establish the proper maxillo-mandibular relations and occlusion in order to construct complete dentures for edentulous patients who have lost all their natural teeth and surrounding structures. For this reason, many practitioners have studied the accurate procedures for jaw measurement. However, if edentulous patients have an improper measurement of occlusal vertical dimension and/or maxillo-mandibular relations in prosthetic treatment, they often complain of functional disorder of the masticatory system and the interaction between the muscles, the joints and occlusion. In these patients the functional demand exceeds the adaptive capacity of the neuromusculature. As a result, these patients exhibit muscle pain, deviation of the mandible on opening, joint noises, limited opening of the jaws, or other symptoms associated with the syndrome. In complete denture wearers with myofascial pain-dysfunction (MPD) syndrome, symptoms disappeared after improvement of the occlusal vertical dimension with the lower treatment denture. There were clear differences between before and after prosthetic treatment with electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masseter muscles.journal articl

Isolation and Properties of Low Molecular Weight Antimicrobial Agents (Matrucin) from an Oral Bacterium Bacterionema matruchotii

application/pdfAntimicrobial agents, designated Matrucin-1 and Matrucin-2, were isolated from culture supernatants of Bacterionema matruchotii IBN6, obained from dental plaque. They seem to be peptides with molecular weights less than 1,000. Matrucin-1 and Matrucin-2 were hardly soluble in polar solvents. Both inhibited the growth of various oral bacteria.journal articl
