    A Comparison of Four Types of Toothbrushes and Different Tooth Brushing Methods on Plaque Removal II. Examinations using first year dental hygiene students as subjects

    application/pdfIn a continuation of the first report, the authors hoped to clarify the relationship between toothbrush specifications and various brushing methods. For this purpose, we compared the effectiveness of plaque removal for 4 different types of brushes with 4 different brushing methods. The first year students of Matsumoto Dental College, School of Dental Hygiene, were selected as subjects. The results were as follows: 1. Brushing methods: No significant difference was observed with the roll, Bass, or modified Stillman methods when all surfaces were grouped together. Also, no significant difference was observed on the facial surfaces with the different methods. However, the Bass and roll methods tended to be slightly better. The results of this study did not correlate with the previous study or with the reports from Arai and Watanabe. The subjects' skill and control at the time of evaluation were taken into consideration. 2. Test brushed: Test brush S was the most effective when all surfaces were grouped together and test brush M was the least effective. This tendency was observed on both the facial and the proximo facial surfaces. 3. Interaction between test brushes and the amount of plaque prior to testing: It was observed that subjects who were divided into the "small" group prior to testing kept the amount of plaque at the same low level after testing. By comparing the results with the previous report, the authors concluded that there was more advancement in the skill of the second year students than the first year students.journal articl

    application/pdfOdontoma has been classified as having many kinds of forms or structures since it was first reported in 1821 by Oudet. Here we discuss those forms that have been observed from 1927 to 1984 in Japan. including one of our own recent cases. 1) The cases of compound odontoma, numbering 179, were more frequent than cases of complex odontoma, which numbered 149. 2) Odontoma was observed frequently in the age-group of 10 to 29 years, with no sexual differences. 3) Compound odontoma occurred frequently in the upper anterior teeth, while complex odontoma occurred in the lower molar tooth. 4) Dimensions measured less than 10mm^3 as a rule. (the complex type is usually larger than the compound type.) 5) The number of denticles found was 19 at most. 6) Impacted teeth existed in 45% of all odontoma cases. 7) Our own case was a woman, age 30, with odontoma, dimension 18mm^3 on the upper right anterior, 14 denticles of compound odontoma, and no impacted teeth.journal articl

    application/pdfIn order to review recent advances in the physiology of masticatory muscle in human beings and in other mammals, more than 50 scientific papers were collected and summar-ized. Enzyme histochemical studies carried out on human masticatory muscles showed that human masticatory muscles consist basically of three types of muscle fibers : fast-twitch-fatiguing (FF type), fast-twitch-fatigue-resistant (FF type), and slow-twitch-fatigue-resistant (S type) muscle fibers. It was also shown that the FF type muscle fiber have a smaller diameter than the S type muscle fibers, indicating the degeneration of masticatory muscles in human beings. Comparison of muscle fiber types of masseter muscles in variousmammals indicated that all the muscle fibers of ruminant masseter are S type and those of rodent masseter are F type, while omnivores and carnivores have all three types of muscle fibers. This indicates that human masticatory muscles have adapted as an omnivore. Recent electromyographic studies on masicatory muscles, especially caried out by the use of fine wire electrode, revealed that the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle contracts during jaw closing phase to regulate the position of the articular disc and that the balancing side of the medial pterygoid muscle contracts to regulate the position of the lower jaw.journal articl

    顎整形力による上顎骨後方移動時のCorticotomyの効果に関する研究

    application/pdfThe author performed corticotomy in combination with posterior transfer of the maxilla in 4 male Japanese monkeys and compared maxillary skeletal changes mor-phologically and histologically between the experimental group and 2 control animals. In addition, strain experiments were carried out on the dry skull using a strain gage. 1. Posterior transfer was negligible in the control group but marked in the experimental group. 2. At the site of suture, active remodelling of the bone was observed in the control group, but relatively slight changes were seen in the experimental group. This difference between the two groups was the most marked at the site of the tempozygomatic suture, followed in order by that of the zygomaticomaxillary suture and that of the frontozygomatic suture. 3. In the proper alveolar bone of the maxilla, resorption and addition of bone was marked in the control group, but no marked changes were observed in the experimental group. 4. Strain experiments on the dry skull using a strain gage confirmed that corticotomy decreased the load on each suture site. 5. Corticotomy combined with posterior transfer of the maxillar seemed to have exerted the following effects : in the control group, traction is diffused to the maxillofacial part via each suture site. However, in the experimental group, traction is difficult to diffuse since the compact bone is separated, resulting in favorable effects on posterior transfer of the alveolus between the maxilla and maxillary proper alveolar bone connected only by the cancellous tissue. These results show the usefulness of combing this procedure with posterior transfer of the maxilla.journal articl

    application/pdfIn this paper the biographies of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi, a world famous bacteriologist, were reviewed using a total of 141 books and journals which are in a collection in Matsumoto Dental College. A biographical sketch of Dr. Noguchi is as follows: He was born in Inawashiro, Fukushima Prefecture, on November 24, 1876. For the purpose of getting a license to practice medicine he went to Tokyo in September, 1896. Two months later he visited Takayama Dental School, now the Tokyo Dental College, and met Dr. Morinosuke Chiwaki, and their lifelong friendship began. After a short while Noguchi became lecturer in pathology and pharmacology at the school. In November, 1900, he went to the United States and studied snake toxin at Pennsylvania University under Professor Flexner. In October, 1904, when Professor Flexner became the First President of the newly-opened Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, Noguchi was able to get the position of first assistant, and studied mainly the spirochete of syphilis. In June, 1918, he went to Ecuador, South America, and did research on yellow fever. In the next year, he claimed that a species of "spirochete" causes yellow fever; however, this was a mistake. Now it has been proven by electron microscopy that the cause of yellow fever is not spirochete but virus. Unfortunately Noguchi died of yellow fever in Accra, Africa, on May 21, 1928.
