application/pdfCalcinosis universalis with dermatomyositis occurred in a 58-year-old woman. Tissues removed from the patient's sublingual region were studied mainly by analytical electron microscopic methods. According to an elemental analysis using a wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscope, most of the mineral deposits contained the elements sodium, phosphorus, calcium, rhenium, and some deposits also contained sulphur and magnesium. The elements sodium, sulphur, chlorine, and calcium were found in the stromal tissues of the material. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy demonstrated that the analysis-peaks of phosphorus and calcium were higher in the mineral deposits than in the stromal tissues. The mineral deposits throughout the specimen were mainly composed of hydroxyapatite, judging from field-limited area electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction examinations.journal articl

application/pdfA study was made of 1120 crowns which had been fabricated for patients at the Prosthodontic Clinic of Matsumoto Dental College during 1985. Some of the results were as follows: 1) 43.15% of the patients were males and 56.85% were females. 2) 87.70% of the patients were between 20 and 59 years old. 3) Crowns of the upper abutment teeth were more abuted than the lower abutment teeth. 4) 75.54% of the crowns were fabricated for nonvital teeth. 5) 50.27% of the crowns were fabricated as full cast crowns, 24.91% as facing crowns (22.14% as porcelain fused to metal crowns. 2.77% as resin facing crowns), 8.84% as jacket crowns (8.66% as resin jacket crowns and 0.18% as porcelain jacket crowns), 14.64% as partial coverage crowns and 1.34% as dowel crowns.journal articl

application/pdfDuring the process of enamel formation by ameloblasts the extracellular matrix that is secreted first is relatively high in protein (20%), but, this percentage decreases during the maturation phase to less than 1%. Enamel proteins may be divided into two classes designated amelogenins and enamelins based upon their solubility, affinity to hydroxyapatite, amino acid compositions, and apparent molecular weight. Neutral salt or guanidine-HCl soluble amelogenins gradually hydrolyzes into small peptides during hydroxyapatite crystal formation, while enamelins, which solubilize after EDTA decalcification, remain in apatite crystal after maturation. In this paper, biochemical studies on the amelogenins and the enamelins are described. This includes extraction from tissue preparation, purification procedure, primary and secondary structures of amelogenin, antibody production and their cross reactivity, amelogenin CDNA cloning and analysis of its nucleotides sequence, and the function of both proteins on crystal formation.journal articl

application/pdfAu-Ag-Pd casting alloys were heat treated in various atomospheres, and were exposed to air, a reducing agent, and or reduced pressure. We studied the relationship between hardness, bending strength, structure, and oxidation zone. 1). The oxidation zone was formed on the alloy by heat treatment, exposure to air, and reduced pressure. The oxidation zone, was not formed on the alloy by heat treatment in the reducing agent. 2). As the copper and zinc in the alloy were selectively oxidized, age hardening of the oxidation zone did not occur. Alloy heat treatment in the reducing agent appeared to age harden. 3). Bending strength was affected by oxidation zone. The more the oxidation zone was increased, the more bending strength was decreased. 4). The bending stength of the high gold and palladium content alloy was superior to that of the heat treatment.journal articl

application/pdfA tumor spontaneously appeared in the left shoulder joint of a 5.5-year-old male Japanese monkey being bred in the laboratory of Matsumoto Dental College, and it grew to be huge. The tumor was removed and examined by light and electron microscopy. The tumor measured up to 15×17×23cm in size and 1,870g in weight. Light microscopic examination indicated that the parenchyma consisted mainly of spindle cells and round cells and some multinucleated giant cells. These cells showed extreme atypia but no cell nests. Some of them had oil-red O positive granules. Electron microscopic observation revealed the granules without limiting membrane in the cytoplasm. Therefore, this case was diagnosed as a poorly differentiated pleomorphic liposarcoma.journal articl

application/pdfWe have investigated the transition of the third molar, or wisdom teeth, of undergraduates students at our college during the academic year, 1985-1986. These data were compaed to previous reports compiled from 1977 to 1984. 1) The four wisdom teeth were symbolically represented in sixteen combinations; Cases where all four teeth erupted ( ) or where no teeth erupted ( ) were common, while cases of only one tooth erupting in each jaw ( )were rare. 2) There appears to be no relationship between a tooth's eruption and its visibility on x-ray film. On the average, one tooth seen on the x-ray film will erupt. 3) According to the data from 1977-1984, 4.4% of all erupted teeth had incomplete root apices, compared with 3% for the 1985-1986 sample. However, of completely impacted teeth, the percentages increased from 24% to 46%, respectively. 4) The inclination of the wisdom teeth examined was mostly vertical in the maxilla, while it was mesial or horizontal in the madible. This inclination was similar to that in previous reports. 5) The percentage of the wisdom teeth restored was higher than that of the previous reports. The number of teeth restored by resin filling, were 16. In contrast, none were seen in previous reports. 6) The percentage of unerupted teeth other than wisdom teeth was 1.1% which is less than the 3.7% in previous reports. Completely impacted teeth other than wisdom teeth were 9 out of 266 people studied. This number in less than that in the previous reports, which was 21 in 1287 people, but the percentage is higher. 7) The percentage of extracted wisdom teeth was 22.0% (135 out of 613), which was almost similar to the percentage of 19.7% (613 out of 3110) shown in the previous reports, If is important to note that 130 wisdom teeth out of 135 were extracted without anti-inflammatory treatment during dental clinical training. 8) The percentage of extracted wisdom teeth with vertical inclination was 64.5% (404 out of 626). This percentage is similar to that of 63.7% (1981 out of 3110) shown in previous reports.journal articl
