application/pdfIn a previous paper 142 books and journals containing biographies of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi were reviewed (Matsumoto Shigaku, Vol. 13, pp. 1-34, 1987). An additional 34 books and journals, and some old picture post cards, were subsequently added to the collection of the biographies of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi in Matsumoto Dental College. Joseph FoxのThe History and Treatment of the Diseases of the Teeth, the Gums and the Alveolar Processes(1806年刊)について
application/pdfPreviously, I reviewed "The Natural History of the Human Teeth," written in 1803 by the English surgeon Joseph Fox. He later published "The History and Treatment of the Diseases of the Teeeth, the Gums, and the Alveolar Processes," in 1806. It is, so to speak, a sequel to his first work. Accordingly, I here review his second work, whose contents are as follows. 1. Tooth-caries and their complications, exostosis of the roots, removal of the enamel by the denuding process, fractures of the teeth, and so on, under the heading of "The Diseases of the Teeth". 2. Periodontal diseases, the. effects of mercury upon the teeth, the diseases of the antrum maxillare, imperfections in the palate, artificial teeth, and so on, under the heading of "The Diseases of the Gums". 3. Filling and stopping the teeth, the mode of applying ligatures to the teeth, scaling the teeth, extraction of the teeth, luxation of the jaw, and so on, under the heading of "The manner of performing some operations upon the teeth", illustrated with nine copperplates.journal articl

application/pdfThe innervation of the facial nerve in the lower jaw of the frog was studied by recording afferent neural discharges from the submandibular branch of the facial nerve, and the effect of the nerve branch was then studied by comparing reflex discharges before and after dissection of the glossopharyngeal nerve. Receptive fields of the submandibular branch of the facial nerve were located in the mucosal part of the mandible and in the basal part of the tongue. By comparing the numbers of impulses between neural discharges in the glossopharyngeal and facial nerves, the magnitude of response in the submandibular branch of the facial nerve was found to be from 1/3 to 1/6 of that in the glossopharyngeal nerve. The effect of the submandibular branch of the facial nerve on nostril-closing reflex did not appear to be large.journal articl

application/pdfIt is well known that metallic materials in patients cause severe artifacts on CT scans, which can considerably impair the information contained in the image. As the CT scanner prepares the user's program, we used the soft Metal Pin Artifacts Reducer (MPAR) program, and attempted to apply the CT to the removal of artifacts which were brought about due to the use of dental materials or metals. Preceding the use of this program, image reconstruction functions (FC) of the CT scanner vary from FC1 to FC7, so we investigated the relation between each function from FC1 to FC5 and resultant images. CT images for FC1, FC2 and FC4 were considerably softer images, and artifacts originated in heavy metals were more intense at FC1 and FC2. However, among those tested, FC1 was harder and FC4 was softer than FC2. Images for FC3 and FC5, on the other hand, were vary hard. Results obtained by measuring CT values of dental materials indicated that the rates of function for FC1 to FC5 were approximately constituted by 1.0:0.9:0.3:0.8:0.3. Therefore, it seems that the softening of image from FC1 to FC2, and as far as FC4, is due to a lower rate of function; allowing for the production of a lower image contrast by decreasing the differences of CT value between an object and neighbors. FC3 and FC5 image hardness, on the other hand, was due to condensing CT values to 1/3 of FC1. Consequently, the images of FC3 and FC5 could not be clearly discerned and appeared rather flat and sharp. Finally, we examined the removal of artifacts by using MPAR soft. In most cases, artifacts were not successfully removed during the first procedure; barely visible white remnants were left in place of the artifacts. Regardless of whether remnants could be seen or not, a broad banded image always appeared in their place. Therefore, from these results, we currently feel that instead of immediately utilizing MPAR soft to reduce artifacts, it is better to select desirable window levels and widths which cannot be disturbed by artifacts, and can be made to fit to the diagnostic purpose. In order to more clearly understand the results of the removal of artifacts in the dental region, we feel that more time will be needed. It is our hope that serious consideration continues to be given to the development of soft programs.journal articl
Dimensional Accuracy of Acrylic Resin Denture Bases : Literature Review
application/pdfThe more contact there is between the denture base and the cast, the better the fit, resulting in a close adaptation of the denture surface to the oral mucosa and a more retentive denture. Many prosthodontists, however, feel that compression-molded dentures processed with acrylic resins become ill fitting in the mouth because they warp severely during processing and while in service. One of the reasons for this problem is shrinkage of the acrylic resin due to polymerization. This article reviews the studies on accuracy of denture bases using various activation methods for polymerization of acrylic resin.journal articl
